Not recognized after first time
This drive was recognized by my computer the first time I plugged it into a USB port -- after that, the drive was not recognized by that computer, or any other computer I tried it on. After the problems I had, I read about this issue with other people who have this external hard drive.

Thankfully, I purchased through Amazon and the return process was painless and no cost to me. I had a refund to my account within two days of the receipt of my return. Love shopping through Amazon!

I have replaced the non-functioning Seagate with a Western Digital that has been working like a champ every time I plug it in.

Single USB not enough
I bought this drive for three reasons:
1. Large capacity in a small form factor,
2. The ability to power/access it from a single USB port,
3. It was on sale at Amazon for under $70.

I started using it on my laptop when it arrived yesterday and was impressed: small, and it worked well with the short standard mini-USB cable. Then last night I plugged it in to my desktop and went to transfer over my 400 GB movie directory. It kept failing after about 10 seconds, at which time Windows 7 would report that I had just attached it. My first thought was it was due to the "sleep" utility, so I downloaded and installed the Free Agent tool from Seagate and set the timeout to Never. Never made no difference. I then used the test tool in the utility software and the it reported a drive failure at about 8%, and said I should contact Seagate for an RMA. All my other small external drives (except for an ancient 30 GB) need a splitter USB cable: one end connects to the drive and the two other ends connect to the PC, using the extra USB port for power. As I had nothing to loose, I gave one of those cables a try - it works fine. So, it appears that the drive needs more power than my PC can provide on a single USB cable.

I'm tempted to send it back, but I'm off on vacation tomorrow and it is a perfect drive for that. I may contact Seagate when I get back - maybe my drive is bad?

CRAP!
Ok so I formatted the disk before i offically "used" it because I kept reading complaints about sleep mode,
ok It was taking forever, so i opted for "quick format"
tried switching documents and was writing at about 18 mb/sec which if it is manufacturing speed would be one of the slowests speeds ever recorded.
Right now I am completely frustrated with Seagate customer service, its horrible and they take their time to respond
I'm currently in the second hour of re-formating my disk
any help would be greatly appreciated

Fast, Reliable, & Sleek External HD
Dear Amazon,

I was looking for a basic external HD that was fast, reliable and sleek.
The Seagate Expansion 500GB was exactly what I was looking for.

Took it out of the box, hooked it up to my computer, and I was good to go.
I encountered the widely mentioned power-standby problem, but it was easily fixed through the format method discussed in previous reviews.

The ONLY thing I would change about the HD is the material of the exterior shell. Perhaps an aluminum or metal casing would provide a more durable feel to the HD, compared to the plastic exterior it currently has.

Oh and it would have been nice if Seagate included a case, or at least a sleeve, with the product.

All in all, if you're looking for an external HD, the Seagate Expansion 500GB will satisfy most of your needs.

Disappointing......
I've been a big fan of the prior WD portable drives, so I was amazed at how far off base they were on this implementation. The bloatware is awful, and if I'd wanted that crap on my drive I'd install it myself. What a big-brother implementation with it already installed and causing problems. Also, what's with the terrible tenuous micro-usb connection? WD, how could you be so wrong???

Great drive - no major problems for me
I bought mine from a local store and started reading the reviews on Amazon before I opened it. I actually delayed opening the package for like two weeks because I thought I might want to take it back due to the bad reviews. However, now that I've been using it for several weeks, I'm pleased as punch. As everyone who has reviewed this drive has noted, there are/were two major flaws: the USB connection and Smartware.

1) USB connection: Western Digital must have started replacing those cables before mine was packaged, because I honestly have never had such a tenacious USB cable. In fact, it's so secure I have to yank pretty hard on the plug to get it out at both ends. I beleive all the frustrated people who complained about theirs, but mine is rock solid.

2) Smartware: Annoying? Yes. A major problem? Not at all. Apparently there are many fixes, but the one I used took all of 15 seconds. It worked on my Vista machine as well as my Windows 7 laptop. It probably works on XP, too.

Right-click on WD Virtual CD 1110 USB Device.
Click Disable.

That's it. It hasn't bothered me since and it takes up almost no space on the drive. (Thanks to Moeman32 on the WD community forums for the fix.)

I only gave this drive four stars because it took me a while to find that simple fix, but if you're reading this you won't have the same problem. I can't think of any reason not to get this drive. Enjoy!

special program is very bad..choose another brand...

ive had it less than a month and it no longer works! it freezes my computer and I'm in a remote deployed location with little chance to contact any customer support

Works good
Using this as a backup drive for primary system, copied all data with no problem.

very pleased
Bought this to back up three computers and copy several large files from work. The drive works very well, but be prepared to wait several minutes for large files (10 GB and larger). I do not like the proprietary software that comes installed for backing up files. I prefer to use my own compression software or just back up files directly to the drive. The drive fits in a shirt pocket and is easily carried. Would recommend without hesitation.

Earlier 500GB drive did not last
Amazon sent me a sales pitch about this drive and I figured I'd better inform users of my experience with the earlier 500GB version of this drive. A drive after all needs to last a couple of years and your immediate five star experience right after plugging in is of little value.
I faced a number of issues -
1) The earlier version of this drive did not last - in a few months died the click of death.
2) Accessing Toshiba storage division support web site and entering serial numbers and so on let me know that my drive was no longer under warranty.
3) When I called up their service dept, they said that the web site was only for bare drives and not for packaged drives. At the minimum, their web site should explain this fact. Many people would simply read what the web site says and assume that their warranty has expired.
4) The service guys (a third party incidentally), sent me an email with a form, I filled that out, emailed it back and they emailed me back an RMA. I had to ship the drive at my own cost back to them and they shipped a replacement back to me within two days.
5) When I asked them over email if I could drop off the drive at their location, (they are close to me), they did not answer the email. Found out after calling them that they do no accept drop offs.
6) This is the best part - The drive I shipped to them was black and in spanking new condition (I take very good care of my stuff). The replacement shipped back to me looked like it had been dragged over a dirt road - highly scratched up exterior and the two halves of the plastic have a slight gap to them. The internal drive is also not that quiet. The drive was packaged very well and I'm saving this package since I'd probably have to ship it back to them when it dies again!

In the past 2 - 3 years, I've had good luck with Western Digital drives (both portable and desktop). I'd get one of these instead

AWESOME deal
I've been pricing these for at least 18 months and I pounced on this at $65 (or close to that). Smaller than my 120 GB drive - easier to carry in my purse. I love it.

As a backup drive is very good. The backup software needs some help. But the drive is what you are buying and I think you can not go wrong with the Toshiba Canvio Plus on price or workmanship.

So Far so good
This is my third Lacie drive and I recently ordered two more. I have been buying Lacie drives for about five years now, I continue to buy them because so far I have never had a problem with any of them. But let me state now that I always power the drives down when they are not in use which is by far most of the time, I can't speak for how long they would last if they were constantly spinning. The drives are easy to daisy chain if you need that, but for me the connection flexibility is key. I have Macbooks and use the Firewire most of the time but I can switch to USB2.0 if I need to have several connected at once. During certain projects I have ran the drives for a week or more at a time and they never get hot, at most they may get slightly warm to the touch with the back of the hand so heat build up is not a problem.
I have yet to find a use for their software so I can't speak to that.
I don't know why but their drives do seem to cost a bit more than other makes, but if they continue to work I wont complain over spending an extra $20 or so.

Works well, but ...
I installed this drive via eSATA cable to a new Dell Optiplex 980 running Windows 7 Enterprise. When I run a file backup (using Second Copy) from the C:\ root drive to the Lacie, the eSATA connection always gets dropped after a few minutes of backing up, and the computer no longer "sees" the LaCie. The Lacie has to be powered off and the eSATA plug detached and reconnected before it can be recognised again. The solution was to disable write caching on the disk, but you can leave Windows caching on. Might slow down backups a bit.
FWIW: sometimes the cheap cables supplied by manufacturer are poor quality. Trying a better Tripp cable may help too. Also, connecting the SATA cable directly to the MB, rather than via an external eSATA, could also help.

high performance
This hard drive is great! It's not noisy and doesn't really heat up that much. I'm surprised at the stability and performance of this hard drive. There's only one thing - the shortcut button software is not compatible with Windows 7 so I can't use that feature. Also, they could use a better backup assistant software. But I could always use the Windows 7 built-in backup system anyway so I don't mind. What matters to me is its performance and stability which works superb!

Win7 64 bit shortfall
I received this 1.5TB Lacie drive this week and installed it on my system which is a Win7 Pro 64 Bit with a ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard and i-Core 7/930 CPU. I chose the Firewire connection as it looked like it would be the fastest. Drive was found and proceded to do a Win7 backup. Twenty four hours later it still was not done. I than did some checking and found you needed to install a legacy Firewire driver. I did then than ran a simple drag and drop copy of a folder with 18GB. Sustained copy rate for the new Firewire connection was no more than 9 MB/sec. I switched over to a standard USB 2.0 port and the same drag and drop transfer rate went to 20-25 MB/sec. Another issue is that unless you buy the $69 upgraded version of their Genie backup software, there is not backup SW included that is Win7, 64bit compliant. I get the impression that Lacie though well made might not be up to date on the technology side (more issues with type of eSATA connection it will accept too). For now it works fine but it was disappointing to uncover these issues.

external storage
This is my second LaCie external hard drive. The first one was full, so I needed another. I use it as a place to keep duplicate digital images, which have been getting larger with technical advances. So, having a 1.5 TB storage drive was necessary. So far, it has met my expectations. It is faster than the last one I had and I suspect it will be quite a while before I fill it.

An easy way to backup data
review of the backup drive
there is several things I like about this backup drive. One thing is quite small and is easy to hook up. Have it sitting on top of my computer with a double-sided sticky tape holding it in place. I like the size of it it is very small. The software seems to be very well matched with the unit and I was able to use it without any instructions. At this point I have found back to my computer and my wife's computer on the drive. I am very happy with it

Does not mount reliably, leading to strange errors
The drive does not mount reliably, and when tested, it seems to show boot sector errors that cannot be fixed. However, if I simply reconnect the drive or restart the computer and then test again, it shows no errors at all and runs as expected. The upshot is that I can limp along for now (it's just one drive in a rotating backup), but I expect the drive to fail in the near future and I cannot recommend it to anyone else.

EDIT: My drive is about seven months old, but since it's part of a rotating backup, it wasn't used for the entire seven months. Other reviewers say their drives failed around the same time. Defect?

Everything is great about this hard drive
I really have nothing to complain about and this product has worked flawlessly for me for the past several months. Definitely a good purchase. Will be buying again from Seagate soon.

Backup software very poor.
I purchased this a month ago it use to backup my two computers. AfterI had to reformat my hard disk today I found out that I cannot just restore my files. All I can do is click and drag the files. A Google search will turn up many people unhappy about this. This was the response of a Seagate forum moderator to a similar complaint.

"I asked one of our techs, and he said that the Manager restore function isn't that strong anyway, really. Bottom line - this drive is not marketed as nor was it conceived of as a product with a high-tech, super-strong backup program. It's a storage facility, and that's it.
So, to restore, drag and drop, copy and paste, etc...

I hope that helps. For full, disaster-recovery backups of your system, ie, your entire C: drive, programs, operating system, settings, registry, all that stuff, use DiscWizard's image backup. It is also free. I know that doesn't help at this precise moment, but I mean for future reference."

Backup for a laptop
I purchased this drive mainly to backup my laptop and it is a good buy for the price and the amount of storage offered. Its compact size makes it easy to take along wherever my laptop goes. I've had good luck with Toshiba and buy most of my electronics with that brand.

usefull
When I sow this hard drive, I liked a lot. However I had some problems installing the setup.exe icon that comes in it. Once I installed, I wanted to make a buck up using the software but did not work, I also installed it in another computer and did not work either. So I just started to transfer data from my computer making copy paste, and it took quite a while!! The software makes computers become very slow.

Worst product ever.
This little hard drive waited until I had transferred all my data onto it (and the amazon return window closed) before promptly failing (after less than 20 uses). I then got to find out that not only does Toshiba make a crappy product, but they have customer service to match. Totally unhelpful (if you can stand to stay on hold for hours at a time), they will allow you the pleasure of paying to ship it to them so they can replace it with the SAME drive within 30-90 days...thanks for being so prompt! I will go out of my way never to use or buy a Toshiba product ever again, and if you're smart you'll do the same.

drive looks and works great - for a while. then the flakey little USB plug bombs out on you, and the drive no longer works. Still under warranty, but you get an online chat utility to some sub asian outsource sweatshop who try and palm you off on a SEPERATE COMPANY ALTOGETHER who want to charge $900 USD to recover your data!!! IOMEGA is a joke - dont touch them with a bargepole.

Small yet solid
What I have noticed about eGo 34616 is that neither design nor the operation is compromised. It does all that it is expected of. The red one was out of stock so I got the silver one. Based on how this one continues, I will soon get a red eGo as well. Anyways I will need two more.

Added attraction is the Drop guard. Wish all hard drives and disks had this feature. A lot of repair-spend caused from fall can be avoided...

Dead slow!!!
Good capacity for the money but too slow. I had to abort time machine because it would take hours to copy 160Gb.

Mine Failed in less than 30 days
I read the reviews and took my chances because I have 3 other DESKTOP Iomega Hard Drives that have performed for me for over a year each. I trusted Iomega. It is small beautiful lightweight and portable - all the things I was looking for in a PORTABLE external hard drive. I bought this item a month ago and it has already failed me. I had first loaded it with my music and pictures - maybe 150 Gig was used, and it seemed to perform just fine. Luckily I hadn't erased the source material. The minute I backed up my work laptop to it (another 10 gig) and erased my laptop hard drive - the drive started making that horrible clicking noise. NOTHING could get the drive to work, not even breaking it free of the casing and attaching it to a SATA drive PC to try reading directly from the drive itself - also - because I broke it out of the casing to try and save the data, I can't even return the stupid thing! I also ended up paying $50 for recovery software to try and recover the missing data from the laptop hard drive! I am now in the market for another one and it wont be this item - I am very disappointed- Caveat emptor!! Buyer beware.

Silent, reliable, easy
I waited 2 years and i finally decided to buy a portable hard drive. I bought Iomega because of the name, i know the brand and i trust it. The price was really good for 320 GB and i'm happy with it now (i bought it few months ago).

Really easy to install, silent, it does not get too hot and it's pretty quick.

Wonderful product
Who hasn't worried about losing precious documents and art from our computer? At last comes a small (smaller than a clutch purse) product that solves our problems, by storing all our work in one backup. Portable. Wonderful. I love this passport. To freedom!

Lots of storage but features are Disappointing to say the least
While yes this is a nice product and has a lot of storage capacity it's lacking in a few areas.

Speed of transfer: wow, could it be any slower... It took almost a couple hours just to transfer 500GB of into to this drive. While yes it's a low RPM drive in the device there is no reason it should take as long as it did for that amount of information.

Storage space: 1TB is a lot of room but... it's not all yours to use as you please. They have a virtual CD partition (650mb) on this particular model and sever other models that they sell and you can't remove it at all... I tried a few different things to get it to come off of the device with no success at all. I tried putting different firmware on it as well as several programs to remove the partition. None have worked. I looked online for similar products of theirs to see if anyone had found a solution, no one has. It seems that there is a hardware feature of this device that wont allow you to remove the partition.

While yes it's a small partition and shouldn't effect you all that much, it's just the simple fact that I have a product that has a feature on it that is worthless to me as I don't use it or need it. Also, why is Western Digital so much of an ass about allowing me access to be able to remove it?

Deactivating the partition: Yes you can deactivate the partition so that it isn't an annoyance every time you plug the drive into your computer and it can be reactivated just by downloading the tool from their website and opening it when the drive is plugged in and just telling it to reactivate the virtual drive. That's all fine and good and all but still it's there none the less.

It's just the simple fact that it's my hard drive now and I should be the one that makes the decision as to whether or not I want to have that memory for storage purposes or for a virtual CD drive...

So all in all if you do and know you will use such a feature this drive is for you. If not... Don't bother with it and get a different model drive that doesn't have this annoying feature.

Sexy little drive
This is my fourth Western Digital external hard drive, and the first one I have had that was ready-made for my Mac. I have had formatting problems with getting the drives to work with my older Mac, but with the help of Western Digital's tech support I got the Western Digital My Book Elite 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive running just fine and have used that for about a year.

When this little silver bullet showed up, however, it was love at first sight. This is a 1 TB like the "My Book Elite," but is easily half the size and makes the Elite look like a clunky old dinosaur. About the same size of a paperback book, this "My Passport SE" is highly portable and convenient.

The fact that this is Mac-formatted was a dream. Plug and play. Out of the box and hooked up to my computer in seconds. Time Machine is no problem. Everything works as advertised.

As far as speed, drive-size and such, there is no real advantage over the "My Book Elite," but as far as engineering goes this "My Passport SE" blows my old drive out of the water. It is powered from the USB, so I don't need to find a plug-in in my already over-loaded outlets. Sleek. Portable. Shiny. This drive is every good thing.

So small, yet so big in storage
Upon arrival, it came in such a small box that I thought it was something else. How can 1 TB be in such a small devise? I'm not sure, but it's there. And it's great that it runs off of USB power, it doesn't require a separate power source like other external hard-drives. Plugged it in to my Mac, started loading it up with pictures, movies and songs and performance was great. This is what plug and play was meant to be.

We have a winner!
So far, so good for 4 weeks. Was never impressed with WD HD's for Mac, and used a Lacie Little Disk for mobile storage away from main desktop TM back up-- another Lacie. If this little guy holds up, I can definitely see a conversion happening.

Pros:
Quiet, efficient back up that is roughly the size of iPhone 3G! A TB more than handles the back up, plus other items I may want down the road.

Con:
The cable! Seriously WD...why introduce this complexity (the only mini-USB device I own)? Take a note from the Little Disk and just build it in. I'd rather have the bulk added in the form of 'built-in,' than bundled loosely in my pocket or bag. Better yet, add a Firewire 8 connection, and convert all Mac mobile storage users.

Solid !!
I am a truck driver, so I am very hard on electronics. I have only had it for a few weeks but it is perfect for backing up my 17" Macbook Pro. I simply plug it in and it does the rest! I just bought another for my mother and her IMac.

I prefer the Western Digital Passport.
I have the 500gb firewire version. The connection on mine isn't very good. If I am working on the table and someone bumps the table, it becomes disconnected and I get that "device removal" warning. Also, it takes a long time to show up on my desktop, once I plug it into the computer. For what I paid, this isn't such a great device. Although it's super fast (why I gave it 2 stars and not one) when it's actually working, I'd stick with the Western Digital Passports.

Very pleased with this product
I am very pleased with this product. It's simple to use and provides me with a wonderful backup disk as well as extra space.

Lacie No terrain review
I bought this HD because I have used Lacie before.
LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800 Portable External Hard Drive 301371Unfortunately I have had a lot of trouble with it.
It locks up my computer. I have a Mac and I have never had anything lock it up.
When I call Amazon they said I was a few days out of the 30 day return.
I then called lacie......Good luck.
I went back to using my toshiba I bought from sams and it works great. Its just not firewire

Wish Amazon had negative stars for LaCie customer support
After 6 months of acceptable performance, the drive failed. I'm now on month 2 working with LaCie customer support "Mark H." who always promptly replies within 24 hours with one of three answers: 1. the cable I'm using is broken, not the drive; 2. the USB connection on my computer is broken, not the drive; 3. my computer is broken, not the drive.

Clearly, there's a pattern here.

I've tested all three of these possibilities many times and none of them are true. I've asked LaCie to replace the drive, and they (again, promptly and courteously) tell me I must have done something wrong when testing one of their theories. It's amazing.

So based on the number of negative reviews on Amazon, let's say there's a 25% chance the drive will fail. And based on my experience, you've got a 100% chance of never getting the drive replaced if it does fail.

So buying one of these means you've got a 1 in 4 chance of throwing your money down the toilet.
