Apple Mac mini MC408LL/A Snow Leopard Server
Mac mini is made from sleek, anodized aluminum with refined, rounded corners and a pearly white cover. But the power of its design is on the inside: the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, advanced graphics, and more, faster memory. And there?s plenty of storage space - for just about anything. Who knew something so small could be so huge?

A disappointment
I love all 7 of my Macs that I use regularly, from portables to 8 cores. I even like the MacMini very much. If you have a spare monitor, keyboard, and mouse, it is a most capable machine to have for the kitchen, basement, or for the kids. With 4GB RAM, the performance is good, and of course, you get all the benefits of OS X, its software, stability, ease of use, etc. The MacMini hardware is worth the money, given the performance. (The server version has no CD/DVD. I bought an ASUS USB external, which works, but not reliably, especially if all the USB ports are in use, and they fill quickly. The power supply for the MacMini USB ports is not over-engineered.)
But this review is for the SERVER edition of the Mini, which basically means I'm commenting on the software. I have been hosting my own domain (web, mail, DNS, file server, firewall, DHCP, etc.) on a standard Mac for about 8 years very successfully, and on a Mac running some sort of Linux before that. I bought OS X 10.4 Server (Tiger) a number of years ago, but it was unusable. With 10.6 out, I hoped that improvements would make server management easier - analogous to OS X (desktop) versus Windows. Though 10.6 Server is substantially improved over 10.4 Server, it still is a royal pain. The server edition of OS X contains a user interface (GUI) intended to simplify the configuration of unix software - pretty much the same software is installed for both desktop and server versions of OS X, hidden in the unix directories. Almost any unix programs on the server but missing from the desktop can be downloaded and installed for free. (There may be exceptions for particular features, like pod-cast production, that you'd need to investigate specifically.)
Ordinary folks who want to host a vanity site at home or share a file server among a few desktops in a small office will find OS X Server daunting and frustrating. If you do not already know how to configure DNS/BIND, you will struggle from the outset - I have a pretty good sense, and still had a hard time. Many of the "aids" that OS X Server provides are just different enough from standard unix/linux conventions that you can't easily get under the hood to tweak it - the documentation may be clearly written, but is woefully incomplete regarding details and sometimes inaccurate.
OS X Server may support all the features described in their promotional literature, but in no way is it intuitive to configure or manage (in the same way OS X desktop is). For example, the "Internet Sharing" feature of OS X automatically rolls together DHCP, NAT, IP routing, firewall functions and the like. The Server edition requires configuration of each. True, it is MUCH more flexible, but you need to be a unix/network wizard to get it to work in all but the simplest configurations. Before purchasing this product, I advise downloading and reading all the manuals; there are 7 or 8 of them, available at Apple for free. You can decide for yourself your comfort level based on them. Start with a detailed list of requirements for your needs (e.g., hosting more than one web or email domain), then look through the manuals for the information you need to configure it. Plan on needing to reinstall and start from scratch several times before getting it close. Take notes by hand so you remember what you need to do and not do.
If you only need basic services (web site, email, file sharing), I'd recommend a standard OS X machine, MacMini or otherwise, plus a few very affordable utilities from CutEdge Software, which require minimal user sophistication. If you need some of the fancy features of OS X Server, you will need considerable expertise in server and network administration, so much that free alternatives, running on Macs or cheaper hardware, begin to look attractive. In fact, if you are at that level, you may be frustrated by the idiosyncratic and inconsistent use of Apple (e.g., /System/Library or /Network) versus unix (/etc or /usr/bin/) file location conventions. Sometimes they're integrated or compatible, sometimes not. You could be looking at a big investment of time to figure it out for any given issue.
You should also be aware that, unlike the desktop OS, anytime there is a major OS Server revision (e.g., Leopard to Snow Leopard), you have to buy a new license at full price. There is no upgrade path.
Bottom line: This is a fine computer (5 stars), but the extra ~$300-400 for the software is not worth it (a half-star). For basic domain hosting on Macs, easier, cheaper alternatives exist. If you require OS X Server's more advanced features, you probably should be using more robust hardware than a MacMini ... and you are looking at a big investment of time to learn how to configure/manage them, equivalent to the effort required to learn other server software which is available for free.
Just what I was looking for!
Couldn't have been easier to set up! In very little time I had this little wonder serving media to the entire house. I hooked up a WD 4TB Firewire 800 drive locally and then connected it to my 6TB Network Attached Storage device. The Mac Mini Server acts as the central iTunes server, photo library, Time Machine backup repository, and file storage for the whole family. It also has enough CPU Power to encode and upload videos. I rarely hear the fan kick on and it is uses very little electricity which was a huge selling point! You can either drive two 24 inch LCD displays at 1900x1200 using both the mini-DVI and mini display port connections or just use Apple Remote Desktop to run it headless in a closet.
Lastly, the iChat server is pretty cool if you have lots of kids like I do. I could see it also working great for a small office.
I would purchase this again if I had it to do all over and would recommend this to any of my friends.
Great value for money
This is a great little machine. I am replacing a cluster of old G4 and G5 XServes that were used as web-application servers with these little guys and I am very happy with these. Even though OS X server is included, I generally replace it with OS X Client for servers dedicated to Apache-WebObjects-MySQL application hosting since I find remote command line administration of OS X Client is more familiar and convenient to me. However if using some of the many other server services, I will leave OS X Server operating system on there.
Before Mac Mini Server arrived on the scene, many were using regular Mac Minis as servers for small sites and small business. Now Apple has endorsed the use of the Mac Mini as an economical server by selling it in this great sub-$1000 package with two 500GB drives. The extra drive is far more useful than the built-in DVD drive in a server usage scenario. You can use software mirroring, or simply use Carbon Copy Cloner to perform automatic nightly backups to the second drive.
And this little machine consumes a fraction of the power of an XServe and provides near silent operation when compared to a noisy whining G5 XServe.
Mac Mini with Leopard Server
Bought this from Amazon with great expectation of an Apple product, having used an iphone and lately an airport extreme wireless router w/c so far is performing rather well. After initial boot and editing the requested server serial # and other wireless data, user name, password and all, i was able to start work on the File Sharing tasks. I am a long-time windows O/S user, not a windows server user, but rather confident that this should be much simpler to use given Apple's adverts in their website. My observation are below:
Day 1:
- Speed is not "Lightning Speed" as claimed in their adverts.
- Pages/windows become unresponsive while tweaking some options i.e. users/groups, sharing and permissions, and displays a colored wheel, not the gray colored progress wheel
- Colored wheel goes on and on w/o any messages letting you know what its all about! and there is not much you can do about it
- did a hard reboot as recommended by pressing on the power button until the system shuts down.
- Push the power button again to turn this damn thing ON again.
- had to reboot at least three times now until, at this point, it refuses to boot up and is now just displaying apple's logo and a gray-colored progress wheel on a white background.
- plans to call Apple tech support tomorrow as tonight is beyond their working schedule.
Day 2
- two apple techs were not able to make this thing boot up. we did a file system check and repair but to no avail.
- This server on a mac is quite very new and this could be a curse for all version 1.0's
- am on hold for about 20 minutes for a senior tech support guy...
- finally the prognosis: they are sending me(with this :) to a nearby Apple Store for analysis and repair, if necessary. I am getting worried now.
- Their Apple Time Capsule also did not satisfy the expectation for an apple product and now this!
- this could just be a unique lemon mac mini server but since they are prestige-pricing their products, i can not be forgiving and patient.
- I am now thinking of returning this "beauty"! that's all it is now :(
Incredibly Powerful and Deceptively Small
The new Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server has just been wonderful. We already have about 100 of them running here at Macminicolo as production servers and they've performed great.
A few comments on hardware:
- In this machine you have two 500GB drives. By default, they are two separate drives. When you configure on startup, the default prompt is to have your services running on the drive called "Server HD" and the backups go to the drive "Macintosh HD2." Of course you can change this to however you want, but that is the default.
- You can also put the two drives in RAID 1 or RAID 0. To do this, you'll need to boot from the restore disc that comes with the machine. Since there is no optical drive on the Macmini, you'll either need to use the Remote Disk feature and take advantage of a Mac or PC drive on the network. (This works wonderful) Or you can purchase the SuperDrive for MacBook Air which plugs into the USB drive of the Mac mini and works fine. Personally, I'm not a fan of RAID, but I know others are.
- This machine comes with 4GB of RAM, which is more than enough for most things. You can also upgrade to 8GB of RAM if you'd like to crack it open. This isn't "officially" supported by Apple, but works well.
- Like all other Mac minis before it, this machine is nearly silent. It's wonderful in that sense. It also runs cooler since the optical drive is what produced most of the heat in the last ones.
- For connectivity, you have a FW800 and 5 USB. For a display, you can use mini DisplayPort or mini DVI. (There is a mini-DVI to DVI converter that comes in the box.) And of course, the machine will also run headless without any problem at all.
And now a couple mentions of software info:
- This machine comes with a license of Unlimited Client Snow Leopard Server. That's a wonderful deal since it's $499 if purchased on it's own. This is a full copy with no limitation. You'll have the blue card with the serial in your packet.
-The machine will also run Snow Leopard just fine if you'd rather install it on this machine and use your Snow Leopard Server license somewhere else.
- For the first time on these Mac minis, Applecare also covers basic setup of Snow Leopard Server. (This is a separate, expensive option when buying an Xserve.) You can call AppleCare and they'll help you configure your server. Very useful.
Overall, these new machines are just fantastic. Our customers love them.

Awesome rack!
I looked high and low, east and west, north and south, and I couldn't find any decent rack for my home lab environment. This unit fit the bill perfectly!
It includes everything you need, as well as screws to mount your equipment. It's very sturdy, and I don't worry at all about this rack failing on me. I didn't get the casters. I devised my own mobil solution. I bolted on two pieces of 6x4 hardwood to the bottom, and attached 4 heavy-duty casters (up to 1000 pounds).
Initially I bought a server rack from ITS Enclosures ([...]), but it wasn't a server rack at all. They ended up keeping my money and sticking me with a hunk of metal that will be difficult for me to even dispose of. Do not buy a "server rack" from ITS Enclosures, because they do not know the first thing about what a server rack is, even know they advertised this as a server rack.
Startech Rack is a good value
This rack takes about an hour to assemble using a phillips screwdriver. Once it is assembled; it is rock solid. I suggest that you order the wheels kit if you want wheels, the wheels are good quality and attach quickly.

HP EX490 Worthless Media Functions (Twonky and HP Software)
Absolutely worthless media functions!!!! Great as a NAS storage device! In fact, this is the only reason you should buy this product. Even with the 3.2.1.34990 release in Mar 2010, streaming of media via Web or other compatible device is pointless, extremely painful and next to impossible. Appears no research was done prior to the release. Media collections over 50,000 can take up to 20 minutes to begin streaming. HP should be embarrassed. Customers are better off buying the Acer model for 1/2 the price or build your own from scratch and dump all the pointless HP software and load something that plays well with the hardware.
Hardware is slick, but having some buggy issues, and more of a challenge than a synology
I am coming to the EX490 from a Synology DS207+
Basically I made this move primarily to add more storage, but also because I wanted the ability to remote desktop into the server and have access to more advanced apps/features that way.
On some level that choice is biting back. Getting all of the basic functionality working that is enabled on a Synology by default is a much bigger undertaking. Also it seems like their is always a multitude of ways to implement a single piece of functionality, whether it is enabled from the WHS console or whatnot.
I would be fine with figuring out the learning curve, however I am also getting some hardware bugs. After adding two additional drives to the storage share, the disks are not configuring themselves properly. The disk status light for one of the disks is not lighting up / registering, no matter what slot the disk is placed in. The server is also mistakenly detecting one of the additional drives as external (E-SATA) when it is mounted internally.
People on one of the MediaSmart community forums are being helpful in aiding my diagnosis of the issue, but it is still unresolved.
Also - the Mac client has been giving me some issues. It has been locking up and often I have to force-quit the client in order to shut off the mac. It seems to be working, but not without issues.
It is a very nice looking piece of hardware though...
The Way of the Future of Home Networking
Windows Home Server is an overlay for the Windows 2003 Server. In addition HP has added several other software applications that provide media collection and streaming. With several add-ons, this server is the single best product for home networking that I have ever encountered.
Not as easy as advertised
I am pretty good at this stuff - but still have not gotten this unit installed after many many hours of work. To start, when I got it, I saw it did not support WIndows 7. I just bought a high end HP touchsmart computer with Windows 7. When I called support they had no idea what an HP Touchsmart was (even though they are HP) - and first said the server supports Windows 7. Then they said it would work after I applied an update that was available. When I followed their instructions, I then got messages that my client PCdid not have compatible software. I also got messages about router errors - but when I investigated error message I was sent to BLOG with lots of people asking the same question. I am assuming I will get it installed eventually, but HP support is friendly but not much help.
Almost perfect
I will try and describe my experience with EX495 rather than just review the product and its features.
We are all MAC Household running Windows XP Professional using VMware Fusion. Our Link station NAS from Buffalo, Inc was nearing its end and we needed a Server that can grow with our needs. We did research over a period of three to four months and our choices came down to EX495 and ReadyNAS NV+. We decided to try EX495 based on some wonderful reviews and support we had from mediasmartserver forums.
Initial Configuration - This requires windows and we attempted at this using Windows XP Pro running virtualized over VMware. Initially I had issues trying to install, as XP was not able to see the server to connect. Once I switched the Network Adapter settings in VMware from NAT to bridged mode everything went well and I had the server installed.
Now my next step was to install the server software on the MAC side and it went without a hitch. I then installed McAfee Virus Scanner add on and installed Squeezebox server as well. At this point I opened up ports on my Airport Extreme Base Station to allow remote access and set up the personalized domain we got from [...]
I then configured and enabled Time Machine backups for my MAC running Snow leopard. Initial backup took a while even though my machine was hardwired. At this point I tweaked my Squeezebox server and added some music and everything worked as intended. I have been running this for a week now without any issues.
I also enabled Media Collector option on my MAC. This worked fine for a day and next day when I went to the Media Collector Tab, I was not able to see my machines. It was a Sunday night and I was not sure whether I would get any support from HP. I quickly scrolled through mediasmartserver site and they provided not just the number to call and exact options to select so that you are directed to the correct tech support guys. I called HP and to my surprise the gentlemen who picked up my call knew exactly what the issue was and fixed it. Unfortunately to troubleshoot they still had to use Windows side to install the tool kit. Once this call ended my problem was fixed and now it's been 5 days and its working fine.
Next day I had an issue with doing remote desktop from outside home and a posting on the mediasmartserver site got me an answer. I also had issues copying videos from my old NAS to HP and a solution by mediasmartserver site forum founder member had that issue resolved as well.
I just started playing around media streaming capabilities to my Apple TV running XBMC and Mac running Plex. I am running wired connection and Apple TV works well when there is no other activity happening on the network. So when I watch Apple TV, we make sure not to run backups or any other writing to or reading from server.
We also created a user id for a friend of ours and he was able to upload/download documents to our server and so far everything looks peachy.
I am also waiting to get Prime Dune, once they come out with Netflix support. I will keep updating my review, if anything comes up in the near future.

Basically a crippled NAS
Am hugely disappointed with this unit.
Bought it for 2 reasons:
1. To stream video to my PS3 (only music and photos seem to work which I don't care about).
2. To access my shared folder from outside my home.
It does neither. It is essentially an overpriced, crippled NAS. If someone has figured out what the problem is please advise. I am not a technical novice and have tried various configurations. Sony is no help as they just refer to the manual (which I have followed to no avail).

Good, but needs more examples!
I learned alot about SQL Server from going through this book. It really leaves out all the clutter in other books. However, you don't get enough practice with this book because the author already assumes you can create the stuff he's talking about without giving you the opportunity to try it out yourself. The first 200 pages uses examples with databases that you don't have enough knowledge to create until page 160. If the author had a page where you could download all the sample databases that he uses or if he took the time to walk you through creating some of the sample databases, then this could have been a much better book. Overall, it's still a great book, but I had to use another book to really get the practice missing in this book.
Quick response.
I received this item very quickly. The book is in very good condition. I will buy from this person again.
Nicely written but not enough there there
The author is a good writer, he's well organized, he get's his point across well - the problem is that he doesn't do it enough. This is a nice introduction to MS SQL but its simply too short and ultimately too lightweight for the subject. There are other good beginners manuals out there that, if they aren't as entertaining, are more useful. Dummies cut the legs out from under this text by keeping it so compact - too bad, if he'd had more room he undoubtedly could have created a excellent manual.
Good, solid admin guide
First, I have to come clean. I am a content developer by trade, have worked on a few of Mike's books in the past, and have contracted with him several times to develop some online courses for my clients. Even so, I'll try to be as unbiased as possible, but it'll be hard because Mike is *such* a good author.
"Microsoft SQL Server 2008 for Dummies" is a solid, well-organized guide for using SQL Server. It's not geared for developers or programmers (unless they want to pick up administration skills), but you can learn how to create and manipulate databases in addition to installing and maintaining a database server. The writing is easy to follow and describes concepts consisely and clearly, which is Mike's classic style. Mike also uses a lot of examples and imagery, which helps immensely to guide you through some of the more difficult techniques.
The book is chockful of practical information about running and using SQL Server, but lacks the humor and clever headings found in many of the For Dummies books. If you're a "just the facts" kind of person who wants to learn how to use SQL Server and doesn't care much about novel headings, grab this book. At about $30 (USD) retail, it's a great value considering the breadth of topics covered. The only thing I would've liked to see expanded is the Troubleshooting chapter. Even though I was an IT book project editor for several years, and even worked on a handful of For Dummies books, I generally don't use IT books until something goes wrong. Then I pore through them, usually on Safari Books Online, beginning with the troubleshooting information. For the next version of Microsoft SQL Server for Dummies, I suggest adding at least two or three examples of log file entries that indicate a medium to serious problem, or some real-world situations or database meltdowns, and what to do about them.
Overall, thanks for another great book Mike!

Not for an real administrator
Show me the pages wich describe how to replace a primary domain controller. Or how to set up RIS the right way with all kind of differend hardware. The info the book gives is not inside out information thats why the 1 star. If you want to get an overview of server 2003 this book could work for you. But dont expect to learn daily stuff work.
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Inside Out
I found that this book contained information and detail that exceeded what would turn up in a typical web search. The book devotes around 200 pages just to AD. I have several books and this one actually gets used!
Excellent writing style, comprehensive coverage
As a comprehensive Windows Server 2003 reference, there is no comparison as far as I'm concerned. Quality shines throughout the book and it is obviously the product of extensive research and lots of realworld experience. Stanek takes some pretty bland subject matter like DNS, Active Directory, and optimization and makes it understandable. This book made many things clearer for me, and I actually enjoyed reading it. Explanations are so much detailed that you can actually configure your system step by step by following the book. Also discusses the underlying technology in a detailed conceptual way, that gave me the overall understanding and insight of what really is going on. If you are trying to learn or working with Windows networks, this book is a must. The book never makes you confused, and virtually all aspects of networking are covered. You really cannot go wrong with this book it is well worth the money.
Very Good Book
I recently bought a copy of this book. I saw it on the desk of a colleague at work and decided to have a look. It is really great and I also like the writing style of Stanek. My only regret is that I didn't purchase it earlier. This would have saved me considerably time and effort in researching several administration problems that may crop up from time to time.
THE BEST ONE STOP RESOURCE
I needed a comprehensive book on Windows Server 2003 and this is the one I picked after reading through all the others at the bookstore. Stanek has the most comprehensive coverage I've ever seen in a single book on security, filesystems/availability, Active Directory, and most anything else you'd want to know about Windows Server. I've been an admin for 12 years and there's things I learned that I'll admit I didn't even know Windows Server could do. As an example, this book has TWO performance monitoring and tuning chapters. These chapters cover remote monitoring, command-line monitoring, performance logging, etc. Chapter 19 covers both MBR and GPT disks as well as SANs, RAIDs. Chapter 20 covers everything you'd ever want to know about NTFS including hard links, data streams, journaling, reparse points, sparse files, disk quotas, etc. Chapter 22 is covers shadow copy from its internals to everything about how it works. Chapter 24 covers everything you need to know about IP addressing and subnetting. There are two chapters on DNS with everything from setup to troubleshooting. Some of the best coverage is on Active Directory. There's eight chapters and the 300 pages covers more than some other entire books on the subject. Get this book jump straight to Chapter 12 and keep reading until you get to Chapter 41. You'll learn a lifetime's worth of knowledge and get more expert advice than in any other book. Thank you Mr. Stanek for such an excellent book.

I recommand this router
I used linksys and dlink in past. The linksys is dead after 6 months and the dlink just drop connection every 5 minutes.
Most of new linksys users say the connection drop every 5 minutes so I guess it's a firmware problem since I had no problem with the old one.
No more dropping packets with 3COM. This router is stable and faster than any dlink/linksys. The problem about dlink/linksys routers is the firmware, they don't want to fix it, last upgrade was in 2007 ..
I recommand this router to any small buisiness and home users. I'm not a wireless user but I tested it. Short range (like normal routers) but you have an option "protected mode" to reduce interference and to get better wireless performance for people that don't live in a house. If you live in a house then just keep it off to get best performance. It's to avoid interference with other wireless routers.
Cons : There is some bug with firefox ONLY to configure the router. Exemple, you can't set WPA2/AES (only TKIP) with firefox but you can do it with explorer. This router is not plug-n-play but you only have to type 192.168.1.1 in your browser (I recommand Internet Explorer only to configure it) then you get an user friendly wizard to configure it.
Paper Weight
This 3com Wireless 11n Cable/DSL Firewall Router makes a pretty paperweight, but in 4 days of trying to get it to function I have not been able to find another use for it. The unit is NOT Plug-N-Play, the software is useless, and the documentation should be an embarrassment to 3com. Note: The CD with the additional files add nothing to the installation information, and the 3com website is of no help. My machine is a 3 month old HP Desktop running Vista Home Premium, connected to the internet through a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. Nothing special, nothing esoteric. I bought my first computer (Apple II with 16K of memory) in 1980 and have owned both Apple and IBM type machines constantly over the years. I know what I am doing with a computer, this is not a case of "DOES NOT WORK IN THE OFF POSITION". I have used 3com products trouble free over the years but this experience has soured me. I will be returning this for something that works.
Rock solid great performance.
This is a replacement for D-Link DIR-655 which is not stable under heavy load and will hang up from time to time. This router performs very well under the same circumstances. Straightforward web page which I think is a plus. 3COM provides networking products to business users and their home products are in same high quality in my opinion.
UPDATE: If you are using bittorrent, set firewall to medium security level to avoid over zealously dropping p2p packets.
