Get what you pay for.
The printer is lacking network ports & other important features. Price looks great until you open the box & see everything it is missing. The company I ordered from has not called me back to exchange "Global Express' Does not have an operator or a live person you can talk too. Bad Deal!

Nice laser printer for home use
We've had this printer for about three years now and are currently on our third toner cartridge. In that time, we haven't had any problems at all with it.

Most of the use actually comes from our three kids who tend to do a lot of printing for both school and personal use. For example, our youngest often prints out pages from the Internet that she uses to color. For this kind of use an inkjet is way too expensive and this laser does a great job at keeping the cost per page down. All I have to do is watch for good sales on paper:).

As far as performance goes, this printer is fast and the output has always looked great. Although inkjets do great with photos, I've never liked the way text looks compared to a laser - and the text on this laser is as smooth as I could ever want. I also like that this printer is small enough to literally fit inside a cabinet where it is completely out of sight unless it is being used.

The only thing to keep in mind with these has to do with toner usage. When the printer says it is out of toner - it really isn't. I just put a bit of masking tape over the sensor windows on both ends of the toner cartridge and then the toner will last for several hundred more pages.

A lot of people have mentioned there are issues printing envelopes; and I will admit that they do come out just a bit crinkled on the bottom. So, if you are planning on printing lots of envelopes you should keep that in mind. For my purposes it isn't an issue since I'm not printing them for business use. The crinkling is minor enough that I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't read it was a problem first.

I tend to be an early adopter and kind of like to have the latest tech stuff (it's an addiction:)), but I still haven't really seen any newer printers that are enough better than this model to justify switching. Because of that, I still recommend this printer for home or small business use.

Not for envelopes
Excellent printer for everything but envelopes. Mangles envelopes no matter what(see 1 and 2 star reviews). So, if you need to do envelopes, buy a different printer. Everything else including labels, duplexing, etc have worked perfectly. I have had one paper jam in 4400 copies. First copy comes in a few seconds. To be fair, since I seldom do envelopes, I have not tried Brother service to fix the envelope problem.

Software is pretty good and tech support about as good as any these days. For tech support if you get an idiot or someone you can't understand, just hang up and start over. Put the phone on speaker and do something else while you wait on hold. Owner's manual(CD only) is ok.

In summary, 5 stars for paper, 1 star for envelopes.

creases paper - drum easily damaged
Had this printer for under a month - it creases paper and now the drum unit creates spots on the printed paper. have used the recommended paper. Should have bought the HP printer but instead bought the cheaper of the two. Now I am sitting with a useless printer. NOT recommended!

when you already have full cartridges- a new printer is a buy
Our old HL-5240 worked great for three years and then died suddenly and completely. Plenty of newer more capable printers & printer combo's out there but adding up the sunk cost of three brand new HL-5240 cartridges waiting in our cabinet to be used makes the decision easy. Plus the HL-5240 price point dropped to $169 from the $260 range. All we do is print black & white real estate documents so this unit works for us.

Seven Years Strong
I've had my Canon i560 for just over seven years now. It's been through six moves. It's been dropped. It's been stepped on. It's been spilled on. I got mad at it once for not responding (this only happened once btw) and I pulled the ink cartridge along it's track in a manner that I was convinced I broke it by the sound it made. Nope. It just dusted itself off, reset and did whatever it needed to do.

I purchased this printer because of the black ink PPM speed and I've never regreted it. I'm sure there are faster ones out there now but I don't care. Sure, some of the pieces have snapped off but I really don't take care of my things very well and the fact that it's lasted this long is amazing to me. I've gone through two laptops and three computers with this thing and it lives to tell about it.

Used printer in excellent condition. Great printer that allows cartridge refill or use of non-Canon cartridges. Most printers these days will not allow that. I have one in second home in Seoul, Korea and was glad to find this one for use in the US. Extremely satisfied and more so because I can save money on cartridges.

Good printer for many years
First of all, since when does a $100 printer become $230 5 years after is was released.
Ok, now the review. When I got this printer with my Dell Dimension in 2003 it was top of the line. It was my family printer until 2007 when I decided I needed a scanner printer combo with networking compatibility. While I was waiting for a good deal on such a printer this printer when crazy. First it printed in only purple, then blue, then blue and black. After going through $40 worth of Cyan ink cartridges I shoveled out money for a new printer.
All in all this was an excellent printer for many years but they're are now better things on the market.
I am now selling my old Canon i550 for a reasonable $25 dollars. If you can fix it please buy.

Exceptional value.
I purchased this item on June 15 2004 for 85. After almost exactly four years the guy I sold it to called me to complain it wasn't working. I was totally expecting it would have to be replaced, but after cleaning the print head with a wet tissue and replacing and priming the ink cartridges, (the black was empty) the thing started printing as if it was a brand new printer.
I have never seen an inkjet double in price before. I wish I had bought one for myself back then.

Great Printer
Why review a 5 year old printer? Why not? If you have the chance to pick up one of these used in good condition go ahead and buy it. It prints good text documents and excellent photos. I've printed many photos as gifts for friends and family and the photos all came out great. Oh and ink for this printer is dirt cheap.

The only downfall is that this printer was made before non-fade ink formulations were common. So if you put photos printed from this printer in direct sunlight everyday, the photos will fade over time. Personally I've had little problem with this but you should be aware of that possiblitiy.

Best labeler for home use
This is the second Brother labeler that I have used, and I find the 2700 is everything I want in a home use labeler. It is easy to use and can even be connected to a pc or mac to create more kinds of unusual labels. Brother labelers are the best.

good label printer
So far, I've used this to label a bunch of coax cables that carry our Cable TV to various rooms in the house. It works fine, but you have to use the right kind of label stock to make sure it sticks to the surface you are labeling. It has lots of options for font size, styles, and formats. Light weight, easy to move from room to room for on-the-spot labeling. It will tie into you computer as another printer, but I haven't used this feature yet. Lots of available label stock sizes and colors, but don't buy them direct from Brother - too expensive. There are several 3rd party sites that offer the same thing for 10-20% less. I read several reviews and one common complaint was how much tape was wasted each time you printed a single label. This seems to be a common complaint. If you are printing many labels at once, you can get around this problem by not auto-cutting the labels after each one. Just print them all in a string and cut them yourself.

Labels and options galore!
Very nice brother product with a lot of versatility (maybe too much for the typical user). I would not get this unit again for casual use, but a more simplified version. I upgraded from that simple version and may be having trouble adjusting. It has many options, but I find it a little difficult to do very simple tasks. I do like that the keys are similar to a regular keyboard and the versatility in the types and various width tapes that the unit accomodates. I would get this again if I had a personal business but not for typical home use.

Fantastic Device - Extremely Useful for Organizing & Gardening
This is a fantastic device - extremely easy to use, and excellent for labelling and organizing.

I use it mainly for gardening - plant labels will fade, even with Sharpie ink, within a month or so. So far, none of my Brother labels have faded - after 3 months in bright sun.

Highly recommended.

Excellent Label Printer, Good Software for Mac
I received my Brother PT-9500PC Label Printer just over a week ago. Setup was very easy on my Macintosh. Rather than using the software on the provided disk, I downloaded the latest software and drivers from the Brother website and was up and running in minutes. I did have problems getting it to work when attached to a USB hub, but that could have been a problem with the hub rather than the printer. Once I plugged it directly into the computer, all was well. [edit: That hub has since been found to be defective]

Full version info, for those interested:
* Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Build 9G55)
* P-touch Editor 5.0 (Version 5.0.017)
* PT-9500PC Driver (Version 2.0.1)

The print quality of the labels is excellent. This is a 360 DPI printer, so it has a resolution similar to the early laser printers. Curves and edges appear rounded and smooth. You can see the pixels if you look really close, but print quality looks fine for most purposes. This means that you can use interesting fonts, including fonts with fairly thin lines if you want. Print speed is very good, and the printer can cut the tape completely between each label, or just score the label and leave the backing paper connected - this makes it easy to peel off the next sticker when printing a string of labels.

The software is much better than I was expecting - labeling software is often fairly lame. P-touch Editor 5.0 is a well put-together and professional looking software package. I haven't yet used all the features, such as auto-increment and bar-codes, but just from experimentation, those features appear to be easy to get to and use. One random note, though: I haven't found a way to rotate text to arbitrary angles (I was trying to place text diagonally). I assume I could do this in another software package and just import it as a picture, but I haven't tried.

The only reason I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5: The maximum print width is 27.1mm (just over 1"). This means that on the 1.5" labels, you get about 0.2" margins at the edges of the tape whether you want them or not. With smaller tape sizes, you can print to within 0.04" of the edge. This may or may not be an issue for you, but it is a fact that is buried in the tech specs. While it is true that it can print on all the listed tape sizes up to 1.5", it can't print near the edges of the 1.5" tape like it can on the narrower tapes.

All in all, I'm very happy with this product and I expect it to provide a long useful life just like my hand-held Brother P-touch labeler.

Wonderful Printer
I have had this printer for over 5 years. I love it.
It is really high quality and I haven't had any problems with it.
It makes a high quality label that looks profession.
I would totally recommend this printer to anyone who has a small business, because you can cut your printing costs down, because you don't have to hire a separate printing company to make your labels and you can print labels as you need them.

Great printer, but BEWARE OF SOFTWARE INSTALLATION!
I've had numerous P-Touch models over the years, and I think the output they produce is superb. The software for the Mac, on the other hand, has lagged far behind its Windows counterpart. Older versions of the software, in particular, had problems with anything except TrueType fonts.

Now I see that Brother finally released version 5 of the software for OS X. I downloaded it and was pleasantly surprised to see that it had an entirely different, more Mac-like interface, and it handled all of my fonts just fine. I was quite pleased until I tried to use some of my OTHER programs.

It seems that if you uninstall the older version of the software before installing this one--something Brother tells you to do in the instructions--IT WILL WIPE OUT FILES USED BY OTHER PROGRAMS! So far the uninstaller has trashed Office 2008, Acrobat Pro, Adobe Reader, iWork '08, Adobe Creative Suite CS3 and OmniOutliner. It's hard to tell what others might be affected as well. I ended up having to do a clean reinstall of my system, which was NOT a small task.

So, buy the printer if you like, but BEWARE the uninstaller!

Well engineered product with a reasonable price tag
This label printer produces professional quality labels with ease. I was printing great looking lables for electronic equipment within 30 min of receiving the box. I use the the black on silver, 0.75" double strength tape and the black on white, 0.25", double-strength tape.
I did buy a Zebra 300 series before for twice the price of the PT9500PC but it took weeks until I was able to print labels due to mis-alignment issues and ribbon peeling off or not sticking to the labels.
Great product, highly recommended.

The Best For Your Mac But Waiting For Drivers For The New OSX
Running a small business you depend on your labeler and this one is the best of the best! I dumped all our Dynmo units as they just fail/jam too much. Unfortunately, the only drawback with this unit is the new Mac Leopard drivers are not out yet. But dont let that stop you as ANY P-touch on the Mac is in the same boat if your running OSX 10.5.1. They will probably have it released by the time your reading this anyway:)

Very nice, a little pricey
This is perfect for printing cards to various kids' birthday parties - the kids appreciate getting their name and customized pictures/messages on the cards, and it's cheaper for you. That being said, it could be cheaper, since you could just download the free software from Avery.com for card printing, and print on regular white paper. The colors won't be as vivid (this paper does bring out the images beautifully), but really I don't think your audience cares all that much, especially since the card is folded in a quarter-fold anyway so they can see it's printed at home. I probably won't buy any more unless the price drops to about $5-6 (with free Amazon Prime shipping), and instead will just print with the software on regular printer paper. Envelopes are included for the 20 card papers.

The pleasure of your own creation
I do not have the bucks to spend $3-5.00 on a single greeting card. I feel that store purchased cards do not reflect me. I would rather spend the time and create my own greetings card. Shopping for card stock, for the most part does not provide me with the quarter fold cards at stores like Staples, etc. If I do find them, they are much more expensive than purchasing through Amazon. I do most of my online shopping through these guys, and do love it.
