Excellent
Great book. It takes the most interesting stuff about Linux device drivers. There are not a single book that can cover all topics, nevertheless this one is a great companion when programming at linux box no matter whether you are either newbie or experienced developer. Highly recomended.

hands on way to learn LDD
This books gives you hands on experience with LDD. All that you need is a linux box and latest 2.6 linux kernel with little or no real experience with kernel development. Also I like pointers to linux source code, which gives you chance to browse linux source code without feeling overwhelmed.

Invaluable
If you have to write a linux kernel module, this book is a lifesaver. The source-code for the samples is available online and saved me a ton of time getting the basics of a device file / ioctls / etc going so I could communicate with my module and focus on value add instead of boilerplate.

A good balance of "How" and "Why"
I have read both this book and Sreekrishnan Venkateswaran's Essential Linux Device Drivers, both are excellent, I prefer this one on generic topics such as:

Chapter 5. Concurrency and race conditions
Chapter 8. Allocating memory
Chapter 10. Interrupt Handling
Chapter 14. The Linux Device Model

How ever Sreekrishnan's book covers video and audio driver which are useful for my work.

As for styles, both keep a good balance of "how" and "why", I think the "why" parts are more important, the whole s/w is all about concepts.

Possibly still the best book on the subject
Even though the third edition is showing its age - it covers kernel version 2.6.10, which is terribly old - in my opinion this is still the best book on the subject.

Generally, it is not possible to create an up to date tutorial for programming the Linux kernel, since it changes constantly. SO, the key is to introduce the reader to the way of thinking necessary in order to understand and develop for the kernel. I think this book succeeds marvelously.

I just wanted to thank you for your excellent book (and lab solutions manual/code) "Writing Linux Device Drivers." I'm in the process of writing multiple kernel modules as part of my thesis, and I've been having a pretty rough time trying to use existing examples or other research given the significant changes in kernel code. Most of the other books I've found either skirt around the issues that seem clearly presented in your book...or they explain them only as clearly as the source code itself.

Other books that do explain things well often present code that will not work with current linux kernels, and it is very tough for someone trying to learn the concepts to adapt obsolete source code...if I knew how to update the code, I wouldn't need to book in the first place. I think I can say this confidently, as I own just about every book about the linux kernel or linux kernel drivers from O'Reilly, Wrox, Novell, Prentice Hall, Addison Wesley, Osborne, and probably a couple I can't think of right now.

Your book is not only well written (and timely for me), but both its content and sample code are directly usable in current linux kernels (version 2.6.30 in my own personal experience). I greatly appreciate the simple fact that all the driver code compiles cleanly; that is truly a unique feature at this time...and one that means a lot to someone trying to figure it out. If the online source code continues to be kept to-date with current kernels, your books will be an enduring asset!

Not for small nuts
Unfortunately, the online description does not say what size nuts this starter will handle. Turns out it grips from inside the threads and, on the package, says from sizes 4-40 to 5/16. I needed one for 2-56, so it does not work for me. The ones I have used in the past have always gripped from the outside and have been for the tiniest nuts, since they are hard to grip, independently of how difficult they are to position.

I was also disappointed that although I ordered two at the same time and they were shipped together in the same envelope, that I was charged 2x the $3.99 overnight fee. Somehow, I doubt FedEx received more for 1 than for 2.
