Linux Device Drivers, 3rd Edition
Device drivers literally drive everything you're interested in--disks, monitors, keyboards, modems--everything outside the computer chip and memory. And writing device drivers is one of the few areas of programming for the Linux operating system that calls for unique, Linux-specific knowledge. For years now, programmers have relied on the classic Linux Device Drivers from O'Reilly to master this critical subject. Now in its third edition, this bestselling guide provides all the information you'll need to write drivers for a wide range of devices. Over the years the book has helped countless programmers learn: how to support computer peripherals under the Linux operating system how to develop and write software for new hardware under Linux the basics of Linux operation even if they are not expecting to write a driver The new edition of Linux Device Drivers is better than ever. The book covers all the significant changes to Version 2.6 of the Linux kernel, which simplifies many activities, and contains subtle new features that can make a driver both more efficient and more flexible. Readers will find new chapters on important types of drivers not covered previously, such as consoles, USB drivers, and more. Best of all, you don't have to be a kernel hacker to understand and enjoy this book. All you need is an understanding of the C programming language and some background in Unix system calls. And for maximum ease-of-use, the book uses full-featured examples that you can compile and run without special hardware. Today Linux holds fast as the most rapidly growing segment of the computer market and continues to win over enthusiastic adherents in many application areas. With this increasing support, Linux is now absolutely mainstream, and viewed as a solid platform for embedded systems. If you're writing device drivers, you'll want this book. In fact, you'll wonder how drivers are ever written without it.

Highly Overrated, but the only text on the market.
Honestly, I really don't understand how anyone can give this book 5 stars. To start off on a positive tone, I'll say what I liked about it.

1) Lots of information. There is no denying this, it is very informitive. However, this is a double edged swords (will discuss later)

2) The basic drivers are described pretty well. The scull driver is a good way to ease into driver development, imo. Simple enough that it's not too overwhelming and ununderstandable, but not overly simple so that you actually get an idea of what's going on.

3) It's free.

That's it for the positives. Now for a huge list of negatives.

1) Most of the information is irrelevent. I feel like the authors lost focus as the book went on, and forgot they were not writing a general "Linux Kernel" book but a specific book for drivers. Many a time do they spend pages upon pages going on about something, only to mention "but this is never used by read driver developers" at the end. You end up in a really unpleasant situation where you have to sift through a bunch of useless info to get to the useful stuff. Most of the time I ended up just searching google, and got better results.

2) Lack of more complex examples. Let's face it, no one needs to write an extremely simple char driver. However, that's as complex as the examples get. Beyond the scull driver, it's just code fragments. I sincerely hope you don't have to write a serial tty device. Which leads me to my next point.

3) Outdated. Many kernel API changes have been made to the point where the code is no longer compilable (especially on the tty front). Methods used in the book have been done away with in the newer kernel API's.

Honestly, you're much better off just resorting to Google. If you want to write your own driver and you read through this book, you'll still have no idea where to start. The functions in the scull driver are well-described, but that's it. The authors use too much space writing about useless crap you really don't care about, and this comes at the expense of useful info
that will actually help you write drivers.

This book will probably come up on your google searches, and it might be worth it to skim the regular chapters. Honestly though, it's not going to tell you anything your other search results won't. This is most definitely not the "end all, be all" of writing linux drivers, it just happens to be the only one.
Excellent
Great book. It takes the most interesting stuff about Linux device drivers. There are not a single book that can cover all topics, nevertheless this one is a great companion when programming at linux box no matter whether you are either newbie or experienced developer. Highly recomended.
hands on way to learn LDD
This books gives you hands on experience with LDD. All that you need is a linux box and latest 2.6 linux kernel with little or no real experience with kernel development. Also I like pointers to linux source code, which gives you chance to browse linux source code without feeling overwhelmed.
Invaluable
If you have to write a linux kernel module, this book is a lifesaver. The source-code for the samples is available online and saved me a ton of time getting the basics of a device file / ioctls / etc going so I could communicate with my module and focus on value add instead of boilerplate.
A good balance of "How" and "Why"
I have read both this book and Sreekrishnan Venkateswaran's Essential Linux Device Drivers, both are excellent, I prefer this one on generic topics such as:

Chapter 5. Concurrency and race conditions
Chapter 8. Allocating memory
Chapter 10. Interrupt Handling
Chapter 14. The Linux Device Model

How ever Sreekrishnan's book covers video and audio driver which are useful for my work.

As for styles, both keep a good balance of "how" and "why", I think the "why" parts are more important, the whole s/w is all about concepts.

essential for device drivers and other NT internals
This is an amazing book. It's not a tutorial for a building device driver. For device driver developers, it is an essential reference for understanding NT's kernel system. This book is also great for those who are not building device drivers but want to understand the NT kernel. The chapters on virtual memory, I/O architecture and I/O managers are totally worth the price of the book.
Must have
If you are writing Windows Device Drivers, this is one of 3 books you absolutely must have. Buy it.
Cool book, I found it very useful
I think its a good book and well organized, my only black poing is that I missed a toolkit section like WinDriver-www.jungo.com- or numega that enable easy and quick development.
Excellent
This book is VERY well written and VERY readable. I needed other sources to get an actual driver written (see Chris Cant's book) but only because this book gives a much more complete picture and I needed something more specific. That's my point...if you want a good, solid understanding of the system and an excellent reference, get this book. It's not often one finds technical-minded people with such writing skill.

External hard drive:Essential Linux Device Drivers
Essential Linux Device Drivers
“Probably the most wide ranging and complete Linux device driver book I’ve read.” --Alan Cox, Linux Guru and Key Kernel Developer   “Very comprehensive and detailed, covering almost every single Linux device driver type.” --Theodore Ts’o, First Linux Kernel Developer in North America and Chief Platform Strategist of the Linux Foundation   The Most Practical Guide to Writing Linux Device Drivers Linux now offers an exceptionally robust environment for driver development: with today’s kernels, what once required years of development time can be accomplished in days. In this practical, example-driven book, one of the world’s most experienced Linux driver developers systematically demonstrates how to develop reliable Linux drivers for virtually any device. Essential Linux Device Drivers is for any programmer with a working knowledge of operating systems and C, including programmers who have never written drivers before. Sreekrishnan Venkateswaran focuses on the essentials, bringing together all the concepts and techniques you need, while avoiding topics that only matter in highly specialized situations. Venkateswaran begins by reviewing the Linux 2.6 kernel capabilities that are most relevant to driver developers. He introduces simple device classes; then turns to serial buses such as I2C and SPI; external buses such as PCMCIA, PCI, and USB; video, audio, block, network, and wireless device drivers; user-space drivers; and drivers for embedded Linux–one of today’s fastest growing areas of Linux development. For each, Venkateswaran explains the technology, inspects relevant kernel source files, and walks through developing a complete example.   • Addresses drivers discussed in no other book, including drivers for I2C, video, sound, PCMCIA, and different types of flash memory • Demystifies essential kernel services and facilities, including kernel threads and helper interfaces • Teaches polling, asynchronous notification, and I/O control • Introduces the Inter-Integrated Circuit Protocol for embedded Linux drivers • Covers multimedia device drivers using the Linux-Video subsystem and Linux-Audio framework • Shows how Linux implements support for wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Infrared, WiFi, and cellular networking • Describes the entire driver development lifecycle, through debugging and maintenance • Includes reference appendixes covering Linux assembly, BIOS calls, and Seq files

Up to date and Comprehensive
This book deals with the modern 2.6.23/24 kernel and aspects of all types of drivers. The Explanations are clear and to the point and the code examples are well documented. It does a very good job of explaining the structures from the kernel you use in driver writing. By having a chapter for each type of driver, often with a working sample, the book serves both as a reference and good read.
Excellent
Great book. It takes the most interesting stuff about Linux device drivers. There are not a single book that can cover all topics, nevertheless this one is a great companion when programming at linux box no matter whether you are either newbie or experienced developer. Highly recomended.
Copy and paste of device drivers
If you really want to understand how linux device drivers works, do not buy this book. If you just want to take a look what kind of device drivers are there and how it roughly looks like, you may take a look at this book. (But, do not expect more from those driver chapters. it is not for you to understand how it work. it is merely for what devices are there) I purchased this book by just reading the reviews here, and got disappointed a lot. I can not believe how people gave more than 2 stars to this book. I believe that if you are real software engineer from linux related field, you can not give more than 2 stars. This book looks like just a collection of "copy and paste" from many device drivers source code, and explanation is very superficial (I felt that this book is just like his jot downs from his work plus some copy and paste from linux driver codes). If you are real device driver developer, this book will not help at all. I would recommend linux device drivers 3rd edition from oreily even though it does not cover latest kernel.
Missing info
I tried to find docomentation about Module.symvers, linking at runtime, symbol issues, etc... No luck. At least the o'reilly book touches on these topics.
The best book yet on Linux kernel programming
I keep "Essential Linux Device Drivers" on my desk, next to a bunch of other Linux kernel programming books: "Linux Device Drivers" by Rubini, "Linux Kernel Internals" by Beck et. al. (which is a bit outdated), "Embedded Linux" by Hollabaugh, "Building Embedded Linux Systems" by Yaghmour, "Understanding Linux Network Internals" by Benvenuti.

"Essential Linux Device Drivers" is the best one yet, followed by Rubini's as a closed second. Between these two books alone, you can learn how to write any device driver from scratch - if handed the hardware manual. But "Essential Linux Device Drivers" goes deeper, and has more real life code examples.

The code in "Essential Linux Device Drivers" has obviously been copied from real development projects, and I found no errors in it. I've looked carefully at the networking driver code, serial driver code, i2c driver code, and kernel thread/interlocking/timer primitives.

There are some suggestions I have (and this applies to all Linux books I've read). One is to make clear that the spin_lock_irqsave() API should be used instead of spin_lock() whenever it may be called from interrupt context. Second is to explain how the interrupt routine stack space is created at the bottom of the regular (thread) stack space.

Overall, good job, Mr. Venkateswaran! You've helped me a lot with my driver code. The $44.99 I paid was well spent on your book.

Still useful today
The concepts of this book are still useful for
Vista and XP.

It also explains the fundamentals well.

I read newer books first, and they were too confusing.

Oney's book gives too much information, and jumps from
topic to topic.

Orwick's book is too high level, and not enough detail.

easy to read
This book is easy to follow and very informative. A must have for the amateur driver developer.
Excellent book.
I am pasting this review that i had originally posted in 2001 at other websites.

This is one of the best books i have read. I have several years of experience in C/C++ and some experience in windows programming however I am a 'absolute beginner' with Windows device drivers and kernel mode programming and i was able to grasp almost everything the book spoke about with relative ease and with NO confusions. I would recommend this book to anyone who has absolutely no background in device driver programming but wants to make a career doing just that. I must admit that the books assumes that you are versed with C/C++ and some understanding of programming paradigm for windows, but it is pretty obvious since this is NOT a book to teach a programming language nor it is aimed at teaching regular windows programming. It is a complete 'NO NONSENSE' book that deals with topics right upto the point. The contents of the book flow gracefully explaining each and every step with precise detail. The author seems to have made the best possible effort to explain the basics before jumping directly into details. And that does help an absolute beginner. This book does NOT cover details about device specific drivers but it does help you reach a point where you are confident that 'you will understand' whatever you research on your own. A very good book... have seen very few of these types lately.
This book SUCKS!!!
Don't waste your money on it like I did.
The author just bores you with terminology and never gets to where you want to go. AVOID.... YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!
An Organized Introduction
This book is a more concise, better organized version of the DDK documentation, minus the reference material. It does a good job of painting a picture of driver architecture and gets you familier with the terminology involved. However, it does not provide much insight or real-world tips, and in fact the regurgitation of Microsoft definitions and propoganda gets a little tiresome. This book does not go into much detail and is not a reference book. After you've read most of this book you can easily rely on the DDK documentation and never flip through these pages again.

A couple specific gripes: 1) If the reader has never written a driver before, they've probably never worked in kernel mode before, so more general information on kernel-mode programming issues would have been appreciated. 2) Though this book does not go into much detail, the forward did promise a chapter on USB and IEEE 1394 available on the book's website. I was not able to find any such chapter on the website, and haven't received a response to my email requesting the information (to be fair I've only given him a couple days).

Writing Linux Device Drivers: a guide with exercises (Volume 3)
Writing Linux Device Drivers is designed to show experienced programmers how to develop device drivers for Linux systems, and give them a basic understanding and familiarity with the Linux kernel. Upon mastering this material, you will be familiar with the different kinds of device drivers used under Linux, and know the appropriate API's through which devices (both hard and soft) interface with the kernel. The purpose is to get you into coding as quickly as possible. Thus we'll tell you early on how to dynamically allocate memory in the simplest way, so you can actually write code, and then later cover the subject more thoroughly. Each section has exercises, most of which involve writing code, designed to help you gain familiarity with programming for the Linux kernel. Solutions are provided. We are not aiming for an expert audience, but instead for a competent and motivated one.

Reads like a course overview
This book reads like a course outline used to teach a course. There are 35 chapters, most about 5 - 10 pages each. It begins by discussing driver issues, and devotes one long chapter (18 pages!) to character drivers. Then the book launches into virtually every kernel programming issue such as interrupts, timers, scheduling, ioctls, etc. Yes, these are useful topics for a device driver developer, but I have already seen most of these topics. The author seems to completely lose sight of the goal of this book: Writing Linux Device Drivers. Finally, in Chapter 24 the author gets back to device drivers and does provide 4 chapters on Network Drivers, and one on USB drivers. Block drivers aren't discussed until the very last chapter (9 pages including exercises).

This book can be useful as an outline, a guide to direct your online research (read, Google). But I very much doubt that anyone could write a meaningful device driver using just this book. If you have access to this book, use it as a study guide. But I wouldn't recommend buying it.
Touches on everything, master's nothing
This book was required for one of my Computer Science classes. It does a good job at introducing all the kernel parts, but doesn't go into great detail about any one. It's good for people that are just getting into kernel programming, but I got though the class by using Google and other references that are already out there.
Many topics but few details. Almost repeats another book.
It's a pity i have bought this book. It almost duplicates "Linux Device Drivers, Third Edition" book, which you can get for free from it's author's site. It proposes itself to mirror 2.6.31 kernel changes, but it is not so. Some topics a covered very bad. Read Linux Device Drivers first, and then look at this book - may be you'll find 1 or 2 usefull chapters here. 23$ stupidly lost.

I've also came across "Essential Linux Device Drivers" by Sreekrishnan Venkateswaran which I can recomend.
Really what I was looking for
Just a few words. This book is great... it combines theory and practice. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises and labs to practice what has been explained. The solutions to the labs can be downloaded from the author's website... and they are even updated for new kernels!
It's worth to buy!
It gives me the newest feature of Linux, with labs to help me to understand. That's what I am looking for!
