Corell draw
Once I got past all te tutorials, & took some time to figure the program out,if you are not advanced with computers, this program will make you advanced. A little complicated, but, patience worked great,

It's a great program, I highly reccomend it.
Good functionality for the $$
I am a long time Photoshop user but I am getting tired of the high prices. I thought I would give Corel a try and I found it works well for the project I am working on. Good value
CorelDraw X4 Home and Student
This is a great product for less than 1/3 the cost of the full version. Especially since you can put it on three computers. It doesn't have all the graphics and clip art of the full version, but has enough to learn with. Great product and a great price. Highly recommended.

Excellent video tutorials.
I used CorelDRAW years ago (version 3), so knew the basics and was able to lay out my new minicomic fairly easily. I found the video tutorials on the DVD to be very well done, and I highly recommend them. I am still learning the PhotoPaint application that came bundled with CorelDRAW, but so far I like it and anticipate it replacing the current program (that came with my scanner) I am using.

Good Basic Recorder, Poor ID3 Tag Editing
I just purchased and installed Audio Recorder 2.0 and got the update patch from their website. It appears to be a well-considered application for dubbing cassette and LP recordings to MP3. I haven't ripped a cassette yet, but even if everything works perfectly as described in the manual, I can only award a maximum of 3 stars because of the weak ID3 tag editing provided. You can only control Album Name, Track Name, and Year.

The ID3 tag is crucial to archiving audio programs in MP3 format. I will have to use a separate application to properly set the ID3 information for MP3 recordings made with Audio Recorder 2.0.

The maximum MP3 bitrate is 224 Kbps. I usually use 256 Kbps when I rip CD's with Windows Media Player.

I would value the rca-to-usb box at $25, and the software at $20.
Great package for transferring cassettes
Advanced operations could use a few more controllable parameters, but this is solid, workhouse transfer suite.
Great product for the price
I found this product very easy to hook up and use. This is great even for the techno-challenged. The only problem I have found with it is with the track numbers on the CD. They do not match up with the songs from the cassette tape. That makes looking for a specific song difficult. I am still working out the kinks, but otherwise am very happy with my purchase.
Audio Recorder 2.0
I have a lot of old cassettes that I wanted to convert to CD. Audio Recorder 2.0 allows to do just that. It's simple to use and the output sounds great!
Great Product!
I bought this a couple of weeks ago. Like the other reviewer, I was most interested in transferring cassettes. Let's face it, generally we can replace most of our LPs with CDs, but tapes that we have mixed ourselves, etc. are another story. I am not particularly technical or patient, but this device is easy enough for anyone to use. It is small and the connections couldn't be easier. Plug the USB into your computer and the other end can plug into any device that has a headphone jack. This is really cool when you think about it because almost anything has a headphone jack. There is a particular song from an old movie I really want but it does not exist anywhere. Now I can rent the DVD and plug this device in the headphone jack of the TV and record it! Just on the Wizard setting, it is very adequate, and of course you can go into advanced and easily edit there. I really love this thing and it is reasonably priced for the service it provides to you. The only way it could be easier is if someone else would do it for me! If you have cassettes you were thinking were obsolete, think again and buy this. It does a great job (and the quality is pretty darn good, considering how bad tapes can sometimes be.)

Bach CD
This is an excellent CD. It has good volume and works well at home or in a vehicle.
lovely music, but . . . . .
No one doubts that Bach's music is beautiful, and so many of the pieces in this album, favorites of his second wife, are lovely. Here are my objection. First of all, nowhere on the outside of this CD does this indicate that these are only *highlights* of the Anna Magdelena notebook. Furthermore, many of the tracks (from French Suites #1 & #2, from the Well-Tempered Clavier, from the Goldberg Variations) are pieces I already own in high quality recording by virtuosi. This CD does not limit itself, say, to pieces that Bach composed originally for this collection; in other words, there is nothing scholarly about the pieces that were chosen for these highlights. Rather, it is essentially selling a "Bach's Greatest Hits" kind of CD under a more respectable name. For those whose classical collections consist primarily of "Greatest Hits" collections of various composers, you might as well toss in this CD. For the discriminating collector, though, interested in collecting serious works by Bach, this CD is entirely unworthy.
Anna Magdalena Notebook-- a treasure trove of Baroque music
This is music for contemplating number and time and not realize you are doing that. These pieces from Anna Magdalena Bach's notebook are a significant part of the history of western culture, and the music is brilliant, lucid, and passionate. Just as, I suppose, Bach's wife was. Played on harpsichord and clavichord, the work-- not all by Bach-- seems rigourously, mysteriously modern, and the anonymous "Musette in A Major" one could even say had in it the roots of ragtime piano. Last but not least, it's quite possible that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson can never be less than sublime.
Music for Bach's Katy
Luther had his Katy who supported him and the Reformation magnificently and faithfully. Bach who was real student and follower of Luther's, had his second wife, Anna Magdalena who was so much for him and his family and music.

Here great notebook of the music she enjoyed immensely so we can as well.

Especially fond of harpsichord music, this has marvelous selection of that, but fond of Rondeau in B-flat major. Minuet in G major is one of my favorites. New to me are the Arias, especially "Bist du bei mir" and ""Ich habe genug". If you're not conversant in German, do go on the website the liner notes provides and get the translation in English for these are marvelous testimonies of their faith in words and song.

Charming and beautiful
This CD is a collection of music from the notebook of Bach's wife, who was a singer. It includes dances, arias and other favorite songs. Most of the pieces range from peppy little dance tunes(like Musette in A Major) to delicate baroque airs (like Prelude no.1), all played on the harpsichord, clavichord or cello. The pieces that really stand out are the arias, sung beautifully by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in German. Most are religious, but there is one that is a nice love song "Willst du mein Herz mir schenken." The website on the back of the liner notes has the lyrics for the arias and they are worth reading. Besides the fact that this is good music, it also provides interesting insight into Bach's life and family and the liner notes have some interesting information about Anna and her notebook. This is a charming collection of music that is a great and cheap addition to any classical music collection.

book received as promised
The book was as new but came without the CD as indicated in the ad. Very satisfied but disappointed that the CD wasn't with it.
Good, solid foundation for SolidWorks
I'm a PhD phycisist that has just started a new start-up. We need to prototype parts and make assembly and test fixtures. While the new class of CNC machines can make parts much better and faster than when I first learned how to mill, going to a machine shop with hand drawn sketches turns out to be an expensive proposition indeed! So I decided to learn the design tools used by the CNC shop we use for machined parts, and this was the text book for a class at a local Jr College. The book doesn't always teach you the fastest way to get any task done, but that's OK, it does a very good job of showing you all the different ways to get a specific job done. The instructions are very detailed, and every time I thought there was a problem with the instructions, it was me screwing up.

The book covers all the basics of making parts and assemblies, and passable drawings as well. One of the chapters works through the creation of a plastic part and it's injection mold, and this level of training has allowed me to create items for submission to rapid prototype houses like ProtoMold. This is really, really good. It shows the basics of what FEA can do, but the exposure isn't sufficient to really do meaningful FEA, these parts are more of a tease. Because it's an introductory book, it only gives a small exposure to the sheet metal tools and doesn't go into surfacing much at all. If you are careful as you work through the tasks and excersizes, you will learn lots of ways to use the software in a fast and efficient manner. If you're looking for advanced concepts, other books may be better. For me, I found it a very good introduction to the power of solidworks, and I'm happy reccomending this book to anyone who wants to learn the basics.

If your a begginer this books is for you
This is a great starter book which has step by step instructions. Also this book came witha CD to show how to do the different excercises if you cannot figure from the book.
Great book for all new SolidWorks users
I passed my CSWA Certification process partly due to the Planchards. I had a SolidWorks issue a few weeks ago, I contacted David Planchard, and he helped me out to resolve the problem, and it turned out that it was a design issue, not even a SolidWorks issue.

The Planchards have been writing great SolidWorks books for over 10 years. The books are targeted for the beginner to intermediate user using a large bold command structure format and a simple but effect step-by-step procedure.

I hired three new designers in the past two weeks. They are relatively new to SolidWorks. I purchase this book and arranged SolidWorks VAR classes to bring them up to speed quickly.

The book provides an excellent foundation of the user interface, menus, toolbars and Feature and Sketch tools. The Multi-media CD does a great job in providing a visual presentation of the first five chapters. The step-by-step procedure moves at a good pace, while each new section reflex's on the previous section. There are great design tips and notes thought-out the book.

One reviewer wrote that the book from Scott Hanson is a better book for the beginner. Scott does not write a book for 2007! You can not believe all reviews...

This is a very respectable application...
Having used Adobe products, and now being comfortable with X3 and now X4, I can say that this is an excellent application for the money. It is bit clunky and sometimes limited when trying to manipulate existing photos to use in new artwork. (I would recommend purchasing their photo studio if that is more your need.) But I have to say it is equal, if not superior, to its competitors which are in the many hundreds of dollars. Like any piece of complex software, this one takes some time to get to know. If you know how to take advantage of layers an overlays, it will allow you to do some amazing things.
A lot for the $$$
I am surprised by the reviews above. I found this program to have a lot of bang for the buck and very easy to learn. I would recommend it anyone who wants to draw on the PC without spending a lot of money for the software.
"Graphics" Studio... but don't expect to edit any graphics
Rather than continue to respond to the ridiculous comments this review keeps getting, I will simply edit it. My original review is below. I have been told in the comments that I didn't "understand" how this program works when I bought it. With that I agree. I expected to be able to edit graphics. Apparently I'm too stupid to understand that a program called a "graphics studio" will not allow me to do that.

Let me quote from the box the installation CD came in:

"A complete graphics package and a value for the money."

"The all-in-one studio for professional quality creative design."

So, from this, I was supposed to infer that editing existing gifs, jpgs, etc, was not going to be possible?

I suggest to anyone thinking of buying this "graphics studio", and seeing all the unhelpful votes I got, that you consider it was the employees of the company that makes this software who gave me those negative votes.

I agree with the previous reviewer about everything.

I bought the program because of some of the cool shape options it had, which I needed to create some new images for a website. Fine.

Since it's a graphics program, you might expect that you could, for example, open a GIF or JPG file with it for editing, right? -- grab part of the image so you could move it a few pixels, that kind of thing? Nope. I even went to the Serif DrawPlus users forum when I couldn't figure out what I was "doing wrong", and was told "No, you can't. It opens everything as a bitmap."

Truly, I could not believe what I was hearing. A graphics program that doesn't let you edit graphics.
At first, this got on my nerves
I bought this product about a week ago, and at first I was a bit disappointed.
I thought it was a program that would enhance my artwork, boy was I wrong. I'm not an idiot, but learning how to operate this program's features, made me feel like one.
I went into the "Start new drawing" feature. This frustrated me the most, because the program was just as difficult as the others.
Each time I'd click the pencil, paint brush, or choose color feature to draw, a zillion tiny box-shaped graphic covered my drawing. When I finally figured out how to create a work of art without those tiny kill picture graphics covering it, the save feature wouldn't save it to my local file. :(
"The design template" feature was difficult in the beginning, yet great to play around with once figured out. I don't think your finished creation can be uploaded to your webpage. On the other hand, maybe it can, I'm still learning.
The online introduction is nothing more than a short commercial. The quick video doesn't show you the features to click, in order to create the effects they're allowing you to see.

I do like the animation feature though. However, it is a stop frame animation, and can be difficult if you're not familiar with it. Once you get the hang of it, it can be fun. I only recommend this software for those who are familiar with programs like it, for comparison.

The other books
Unfortunatly I arrived at Virginia Commonwealth University's graphic design program after Phil Meggs had passed away. His legacy still lives on. Rob Carter on the other hand has been my professor. He is a great man who pushes his students into experimenting and becoming comfortable with their own styles of design. He is by no means a "stuffy" guy. I have some of their books and I don't have one problem with them at all.

By the way, this book is a good one!
A Very Useful Book
The Digital Designer is a quality publication , plus it covers enough ground to be useful in all of the classes we teach, so students going through the program will probably keep it and use it in several classes.

Your text is written in a friendly, accessible tone, and is a relief from some of the stuffy "Design is the Center of the Universe" books out there. As an example stuffy books are anything by Stephen Heller, Phil Meggs, or Rob Carter.

Their books are really good, of course, but frankly too focused on defining design as an official profession. Their books to me always seem like they are stiffly trying to define design as a formal, codified, yet creative event.

You seem to have achieved that friendly informative tone with ease. Kudos to you on your well resolved text. Frankly, this book is more useful to our program than any Rob Carter book, because of its accessibility.
