Easy & effective

Great Projector for the Money$
I own and operate a professional audio, DJ, video and multimedia services company and we were looking to add projection and presentation to our inventory of offered products and services. After looking at this item through Amazon and other online retailers we decided to buy from Amazon and see how this inexpensive projector stacked up. For the money, I could not be happier. It is not a native XGA projector, nor does it offer 1080p or HDMI inputs. But, all that aside, it really provides a nice sharp pictures at Hi Definition 1080i very well.

We bought some additional adapters to get RGB component to VGA so that we could hook up our XBOX 360 to the unit via HiDEFINITION and the picture was amazing. Similar paces hooking the unit up to a laptop also produced great results. For the most part, this little projector will be everything we need it to be for small to medium sized events and presentations and in medium to short-throw situations. A much more expensive unit would be needed for high-output or long-throw projection presentation situations or for larger audiences, but this little unit did exactly what we wanted in breaking into the projection arena for our business.

We have already used this projector as an add-on to birthday parties for a mobile game-room application, as well as at wedding receptions to broadcast a monogram onto a blank wall and to show a picture slide-show on a screen at a wedding reception. We also purchased a 70" x 70" screen for around $90, a hard-shell roller carrying case for $100 and the various vga and rca adapters for around $20 to make sure we have any and all accessories needed for our various clients. All in all, a small investment for a big return.

I expect our future purchases in the projection arena will be higher end and more expensive but only to accommodate larger audiences and to achieve higher light output for monogram displays.

First Projector SUUUUUUPER!
I just got my projector in a bout 90 minutes ago. I do not like to read instructions and will set up most things without reading it. I just put it together with my laptop and turned it on. I was not sure how much projector I am going to get out of this, because the price is really deceiving.I used to work and give classes where there were projectors more than twice the price of this one I just bought.
The picture is so much better and clearer, there is barely any noise, it is much more quiet and barely audible.You can say, if someone lets a silent fart go, it is more quiet than that sound...Great Resolution.
It is an awesome projector, useful for more than work, also for family, movies, all that the mind and eyes can use this for.I really recommend this item. It is also not too heavy and has a nice size. It came with a bag, even though it is thin, it is good that it has a bag to put in all the rest of the cables and stuff. This is a good investment, and the picture is so clear, it is worthe the money I have spent.And it is nice and bright too, even if it is switched to the eco mode. You cannot go wrong with this projector!!

Great projector
I needed a projector for doing a variety of public presentations. This one has lived up to its reviews. It is easy to use and the quality of the projected image is excellent. I finally have a projector that does justice to the quality of the photos I use with powerpoint.

Durable, easy to use, perfect TV replacement
I bought this to replace my parents' old cathode-ray TV. Both I and they are very satisfied. This serves as an excellent projection TV, makes no noise to speak of, provides a very clear picture, and has survived at least one 4' drop without incident. It is, in short, everything a home projector should be, and fully lives up to the many glowing reviews here. I have used much more expensive projectors that gave much less value.

Some minor issues: a relatively limited selection of jacks, relatively long warmup time (couple of minutes).

This projector isn't just for nerds and geeks. I got it for a Christmas present. Worried about the set up. It was so simple, even an adult can do it. (Kids always have the answers for technology.) Plugged it in to the powerbook and off we go. Really user friendly.

great for classroom...and at home
I bought this almost two years ago, primarily to use in my school classroom. I was tired of trying to reserve the single projector available for the entire department--it could never be found. Like most teachers, I spend a lot of my own money on school supplies. This was a great bargain, and has made life much easier. I can now prepare wonderful presentations for my students, and project an image large enough for everyone in the class to easily see. It has really enhanced my ability to teach complex topics in biology. I can supplement with animation, short video clips, powerpoint, and assign student presentations with audio and video.

During breaks, I use this at home to make photo slide shows on the wall during parties, and to watch movies.

Not a high end projector, but then since I am hauling it around a lot and there is a risk of theft at our school, I don't want to invest a ton of money. It has been reliable and easy to use with both my mac and pc laptops. While I have used many projectors, this is the first projector that I have owned as my own personal property and I am very happy with it.

Good Product
We purchased the projector for a homeowner presentation for over 100 people and it worked very well. Easy to travel with- Focus was excellent- Easy to set-up. Would highly recommend this projector.

Projector
I needed a projector to use with a computer for an all day meeting and little time to find out what was available. We took a chance and ordered this projector from Amazon since it was actually the same cost or less as renting one. It came in time to try it out and practice using it, and everything worked fine. I couldn't believe how smoothly everything went, especially since I had no idea what I was doing! I knew nothing about projectors, how to use, how to connect, etc., and had to totallly rely on my equally novice assistant and the instructions provided. The instructions were very simple to follow.

The image was fine, everything was provided, and we had no problem with several people connecting their computers and using it. The image was really quite good in spite of too much light in the room and less than adequate conference facilities. The image is tilted when the projector is at an angle to the wall, and this could only be adjusted by propping up one edge of the device. There is no adjustment on the InFocus for this. This minor drawback did not detract from the other features. Overall, we were very impressed with the service and the InFocus projector, thus prompting me to provide my first ever comments on a product purchase!

This thing is crap.
I got my mini av projector in the mail and 2 days later it broke. That is not the reason I'm giving it 2 stars. No matter how I adjusted this thing there were these round dots that I guess were the pixels in the picture and every dark seen in a movie is impossible to see and just turns out completely black. Plus there is no way to adjust this on the projector. Picture way to dark and pixels way to big. Just not worth it to me.

Worth the price...
I purchased this projector when it was on sale for $99.00. As others have noted, the projected image does have a "dot look" to it, but for the price, I was not expecting much. The room does need to be dark for best results--we just keep a night light on to see to switch video games, etc. We use the projector for TV, DVDs and video games. It has decent sound, but we hooked it up to our surround sound instead. The text on television and most video games (such as Wii Animal Crossing) shows up fine, but we have noticed that Wii Guitar Hero is a little fuzzy to read, and Wii EA Sports Active is very hard to read. The better the graphics, the clearer the text. Something to aware of, though, if you were wanting to use a ceiling mount, is the fact that you cannot flip the projector upside down and screw bolts into the bottom of it like you can with other projectors. There are no bolt holes in the bottom, and you can't flip the image on the projector. You can basically only adjust the focus and volume, so it doesn't have a lot of features, but for us, it has been so much fun and worth the price we paid.

its good for people who are on night shift and do alot of gaming wouldn't recomend it for days use unless u have a really dark room. there are no ajustments so u have to settle with it long bulb life leds are aperently good but u can see little dots like in a magezine if u get to close to the screne (recomended screne size 60 - 75 anything else is either to dark or to faded

Not recommended
I bought exactly the same projector directly from where they are made: in Taiwan (so it is NOT from Amazon). You cannot connect this to computers since it only has audio/video connection (yellow video + audio red and white; typical RCA). Also, you clearly see the beehive pattern on the wall or screen (very average quality but it is cheap, so..) I used to watch 4 movies then the problem occurred: when I switch it on, it is alright (LEDS are bright) then after 1 second or 2, the lamp goes very low (to an extent that no projection is possible!). Since it was still covered by the warranty, I contacted the seller (plumbargains, some say he's back in business with another name: beware!) but he refused to fix it or give me another one. I thought the small fan in it had stopped to run, but it still works. I don't know where I can find someone able to fix the device. Mini-Projector
The mini-projector was not suited for what we needed. It appeared that it would be suitable to function with a laptop. This was not the case. The image wavered and was not very clear. Fortunately, the seller allowed us to return it but we still lost 40.00 due to a restocking fee despite the fact that we attempted to contact the vendor within 24 hours of receiving the product. We will probably not use Amazon for anymore electronic purchases.

Can be used with your PC
If you bought this projector to work with your PC, you can still do it, with a S-video to TV out converter, connect the S-video to your computer and the TV out to the projector, you will have the image only, the audio will still go out from your speakers.
Also I should mention that this is a very good projector, very decent quality for a projector of this size.

Does NOT work with IPhone
The promotional photos show that it works with an iphone but it does Not. Another reviewer says that it works only with the ipod functions of the iphone but I have not checked that out. The photographs on my iphone do not display, nor anything else I have tried.

The instructions are pretty pathetic. I am returning this device.

Not for everyone
The unit is very easy to use and is extremely small and light weight. The unit I received was defective and had to be returned as the picture would flicker, however for what I was able to tell about the picture quality, it is just not there. The primary use would have been to have something so portable to connect to my iPhone and even with the focus adjustments, the picture quality was just okay. Too dark and hard to see unless the room is extremely dark. I would have probably keep the unit and tried it out some more in different settings had mine not had the issues it had.

Set some realistic expectations with yourself on how this will perform. The price at Amazon is amazing at over 33% under MSRP and for the right use (traveling business professional for instance) that is just doing presentations, this would probably be just fine.

Not what I needed, but Amazon to the rescue!
The Projector is as advertised, very compact, weighs 4 oz. However, anyone considering this unit should be aware that there is NO support for a VGA output! The ONLY video output for this unit is a RCA type plug. Since I needed it for a presentation using the VGA output on my computer, it was useless to me. I e-mailed Amazon, received a RA number, and Amazon set up a pickup at the motel by an overnight shipping service.

Amazon paid for the return freight, and credited the entire purchase price, including freight, back to my card.

Thanks Amazon! I am a completely satisfied customer, and will be back for many more purchases in the future!

Professional quality projector at a budget-friendly price
I am an independent consultant who makes six or seven projector presentations a year to my clients. I needed something that would be bright enough for a well-lit conference room and would project an image large enough for groups of 10 to 20 people. I also didn't want to spend the $800 to $1000 that many of the projectors geared for the professional market cost. After pricing rental equipment, I realized I could buy this projector for less than it would cost to rent similar equipment twice. I've been very satisfied with its brightness and ease of use. I use a Mac Powerbook for running my presentations, and it was extremely simple-- you need a Mac mini display port to VGA cable adapter, but after that you just plug it in and it works. It might have been nice if it came with a carrying case, but I feel that's a small quibble at this price point.

not what i expected
this thing is great the video play on it is amazingly bright ,crisp and awesome and i use it for my business also and the pictures are just as good, over all its sooo worth the money you'll love it

Great for home movie theater
We love the unit -- use it mainly for movies at night. I especially love the fast auto poweroff, the auto-signal detect, and the ability to turn down the brightness to conserve bulb life (It is still bright enough to use during the day in a semi-darkened room). The colors and contrast is great (when set to movie mode).

I have not noticed any of the "rainbow" effects during movies that can happen with dlp projectors -- though it is easy to create the effect by rapidly waving your hand in front of the projector while on, I have yet to see the effect during movies and video games.

I'd definitely recommend it. Note that we don't use blueray yet, so the 720p resolution is far more than needed for DVD quality movies, and I couldn't justify spending 4 times the amount for a good 1080p projector.

BTW, we use composite video via VGA to get the best video picture. So I'd also recommend ordering an inexpensive composite to vga cable. As ours is ceiling mounted, I ordered:
1. 25ft SVGA cable (about $11)
2. 6ft VGA Male to 3RCA (Component Video) Male Cable (about $4)
3. VGA Coupler / Gender Changer Female-Female (to connect the above cables together) ($1.50)

Absolutely no need to waste money on expensive cables...

All round performer
I was skeptical at first but decided to try the product out. I have to say I don't regret my purchase and am very glad I bought it. I've hooked it up to my computer, my DVD player, my Xbox 360, and my Wii all work extremely well. It's made my viewing and playing experience much more enjoyable that clarity is amazing as is the brightness I have it set up against a 70 inch Screen just perfect. I did get special cables to hook up the 360 and Wii, and different audio speakers but all together that was no more than 15 dollars. If you know what your doing the product will work well.

Fell short on clarity
Reading the spec for this projector, it sounded great with excellent brightness, ease of use and low noise. However, it was very disappointing when it came to clarity.

Love my new projector (my first one)
I have used friends projectors in the past but this is the first one I have owned. I love it! The picture quality is great even though I havent recieved my screen yet. so far I have just been using a white wall and it looks really good. I should be getting my screen next week then it will look amazing. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because I have noticed some minor flicker. Its not on the whole screen, just a few small white logos like the name of the tv channel or whatever. It is so minor that It took me like 2 weeks of using it to notice it. But It doesnt really bother me because it is rarely seen. other than that it is a great projector for a great price. I was surprised with how small it is, it is freakin tiney. I mean I wasnt expecting it to be huge, but i didnt realize it would be this small. Great for traveling with. I am happy with my purchase. If I would have had like $1300 or so I would have gotten a better model, but for the price this one cant be beat.

Worth every penny
This projector gives off a beautiful picture, is compact, and is really not all that noisy. I have watched blu rays, the super bowl, and a standard dvd upscaled to 720P. All have looked phenomenal. Even during the day light hours it gives off a good picture. I painted my theatre room a deep grey and it helps tremendously with keeping light from bouncing around. I have it shining on a 106 inc screen and it looks great. For 720P at this price you will not be dissapointed. It looks better than my 1080P Sony 120Z.

Lots of research - This is the one!
I did lots of research on HD projectors under $1000. At the time I purchased this from Amazon, they were offering a $350 projector screen for free, so I just couldn't pass that up! Otherwise, I would have opted for the HD66 for the added lumens.

I watch blu-ray movies at 1080P with this projector. It runs 1080P just fine. the 720P in the title is just the "native" resolution.

As for others' review comments regarding:

Remote back-light - It is bright, but how much do you use the remote?
Zoom really small - Yep, this is true. You'd better know how far away from your screen you need to put it. The zoom feature is almost non-existent. It also has a feature that will allow you to crop the edges a little bit - this helped me fit to the screen perfectly.
Rainbow effect - I haven't had this issue at all.

Only one month old, but we love it
Great 720i picture for $650!
The only difficultly we had was installing it. The ceiling mount we already own came with three different-sized bolts, but all were too big.
I had to go to a hardware store and purchase new bolts.
I cannot rate the reliability after only one month, will comment again after one year.

Fan Locked error
I bought this projector about a month ago. The price was incredible. Within a week after roughly watching 5 movies when pressed on button to turn the projector on the blue screen came on and the next thing it said "Warning Fan Locked" and turned off automatically. Apparantely the HD65 does this a lot. I found on some forums that people had the same problem. I've emailed optoma with the issue and still no word back. It hasn't been more than a week and my brand new item does not work. Apparently everytime i turn it on i can hear the fan, i don't think there is anything wrong with it, i think maybe with the sensor. Well i pray that i get a new one or they will fix this one for me.

Inexpensive, but great quality
On a dollar for quality basis, I doubt this projector can be beat. Image quality is fantastic, brightness is good and the device itself is reasonably quiet.

The only complaint I have is that the remote control. The remote is backlit, which in and of itself is a good thing, but the backlighting rivals the projector bulb for lumen output. When the lights are off, as they will be when you use a projector, the backlighting of the remote will blind you.

Not a big deal though, since you'll only use the remote to setup the projector once. After that it is only used to turn the projector on and off.

Very Good Projector
I used to watch movies using my friends Sharp XR-40X - DLP projector and when I decided to buy my own, I went for Optoma HD20 based on the reviews on Internet. All I can say is what a difference from any other projector that I have seen. The image clarity is good, sharp and contrasty. For my budget and requirements, this projector is more than enough for me. Till now, I did not see any rainbow effect that others are saying ..

Great for my first projector
The Optoma HD20 is the first projector I have purchased. It looks fantastic shooting onto my homemade 100" screen. I have it hooked to my PS3 and HTPC. The picture is smooth playing video games or watching tv or movies, with no blur or trails. I am very happy with the results for the price. Two problems with this projector. First, you need a fairly dark room in order for it to look its best. With the sun out and the shades open the picture gets washed out pretty easy, which I expected for the price. Also, the black is mediocre, especially in night scenes. The second problem is that it does not have an audio output jack. I had to purchase an AV receiver so I could get sound output since everything is connected via HDMI. All in all for the price I love what the Optoma brings and would recommend to anyone looking for a low budget projector home theater projector

Optoma HD20 Home Theater
I bought the HD20 to use as my main TV. I mounted it on the ceiling and our chairs are 14 feet back. I made a 80" diag screen out of smooth particle board and painted it with flat white paint, and a black boarder made out of milled 2x4's. I set it up in the basement, in a room the was designed as a home theater. I have a Dish-HD receiver. I'm very happy with the projector. All I can do is compare (by memory) it with the plasma sets at Best Buy. The picture is super sharp and colors are great (with a HD signal). I don't see any motion blur/artifacts that I see on LCD sets. I run it at the "low" lamp setting and it is very bright with one 13w CFL lamp in the back of the room by us. My wife can easily read if she wants to. The pixels (screen door effect) are first noticeable at about 1.5-2 feet from the screen. Bottom line is the money. The biggest TV at Best Buy is a 65" plasma at $2700. The HD20 was $1000 at Amazon with free shipping and my screen is bigger at 80". I think I made the right move.

Great Value, Good Picture
The Family loves it, the picture is very good, no real problems setting it up if you plan before you install. We had to install a dedicted HDMI cable to the unit because the contractor that ran CAT5 screwed up and the baluns would not work on his cables; they did work on factory cables run outside the walls, but what good is that, might as well run new HDMI if you have to open up walls and ceiling. Black levals and contrast not as good as 51" plasma, but at 104" the picture size more than makes up for that. Sharpness and detail are excellent. No noticable RBE and noise is not a factor when viewing actual content at eco lamp settings; it does pick up quite a bit at shutdown, but only briefly. Sources are DMA2100 (1080P, 60hz), HD-A30 (1080P, 24hz) and WII (component input) passing through TX-SR606; no problem syncing with any source once the dedicated HDMI cable was installed. Ceiling mounted using Dayton PM105.

Very good projector
This is a good projector, especially for the money. It is bright (I had to turn the brightness down considerably even in a bright room to get the best color), has good contrast, good connectivity, is very quiet, and is easy to use. It has a keystone correction to adjust for distortion caused by aiming the projector up toward the screen. The remote is not especially sensitive - it pretty much has to be aimed right at the projector (front or back). It does include a laser pointer, and with a USB cable (not supplied), it can be used to control a computer as a mouse. Just to add a few notes to previous reviews: this particular model does not have a manual zoom control to fit the picture to the screen/wall. The zoom control is on the remote, which I did not find to be a problem. In fact, it can also be used to zoom in on a picture to show greater detail. The bad thing is that it will not quickly "un-zoom" (return to a preset position). In fact, the zoom is slow. Sharpness is very good, but it is not "High Definition." Therefore, if you use the video input, expect it to be like a very large TV with standard definition - a bit fuzzy. If you use it as a monitor with a computer, it is quite sharp. Also, if you use the video input for still pictures, you can get some annoying flickering. (Some devices only output a video signal.) I use it as a monitor with a netbook computer, and it works fine.

Affordable Projection with Quality~
The Optoma DS317 DLP Multimedia Projector lives up to its marketing materials. It is simple and easy to use, projects a clear image in small or medium-sized rooms and has the lumens to be seen in a moderately bright room. (I haven't tried it in a large hall yet). The price is fantastic for small business owners, teachers and others who have to operate on a tight budget, yet you still get more than you paid for. People who travel light may find that its 11"l x 8"w x 3.5"h size is a little large for them, however I found that it fits very well in a wheeled backpack-style carrier, fitting nicely right along with my laptop. A small downside, the projector relies on an "on-screen command" to adjust the size of the image on the wall rather than an easy to use slide or roller wheel. That is a small matter and not a big detractor. The lense cap has very small pronged clips and I wonder how long they're going to last. Let's end on a positive: the fan system is excellent and cools the projector quickly after power off.

This is a great multimedia projector and I recommend it for anyone with basic business and education projection needs. It may be great for entertainment and home theater, however I haven't put it through those paces. I suspect it would do quite well.

Good projector
This projector is very good.
Especially, if you want to use this project in your room, it's perfect.
Recent trends in projector is reducing the size ans weight.
But due to the reduced size the contrast ratio and brightness is decreasing even though they are portable.

But this projector provides best quality brightness and contrast ratio, which means the resolution is great!!! Now, I connected this projector with my computer and home theater.

I highly recommend this item!!!!

Ok projector for the money
The good: Side vent, very bright, quite fan, easy menus, rapid shutoff. The bad: Can't adjust the size of the image, picture does not appear as crisp as my old HP VP6111. For the money, this is a nice projector. I don't believe the picture is as clear for TV and movie viewing. I compared it to my older HP projector and I thought my HP was clearer. I will check it again tonight. It should be good for powerpoint presentations.

Surprising and disappointing Price....
Amazon is generally watchful over vendors who charge wildy unrealistic prices for merchandise. This current offering for $350 is way over the top. I just paid $59.99 at Marshall's. Thoroughly not in the Christmas spirit of things, but in looking at the vendor's name, perhaps they are not familiar with American fair trade, and should be forgiven. In any case, do not be fooled. This item is worth about $50. It is a toy. The fan IS rather loud, and it requires total darkness for a decent image, and I define decent as generally as I would the character of said vendor.

Save your money
I would advise saving your money and putting it toward a better projector. We bought this primarily for watching outdoor movies. It works better with animated films that regular movies. The resolution is poor, you can see a honeycomb pattern, I knew this projector wouldn't have great resolution. However, the biggest problem isn't the lack of clarity, but in the lack of brightness of the bulb. Certain scenes will not display due to the lack of brightness. This projector doesn't make for an enjoyable viewing experience. I wish I had never purchased it, but had put the money toward a better unit. I will be upgrading to a real projector this Christmas. I just wish I hadn't thrown my money away on this one.

Very surprised to see so many GOOD reviews
I bought this projector, which is actually a Sharper Image Wonderwall Projector, I'm not sure why they don't state that here.

I had pretty low expectations for it, I really did. I didn't expect much at all. But this was just garbage. I bought this at [...] for only [...]. I really don't think I got a dud, I think this is just how it is. Projected very close to the wall (like 3 feet) the picture is acceptable - but why would you buy a projector to end up with a 2 foot image? If you want an image any bigger - its just unacceptable. I would say "its a toy" - but its not, because if you made your 5 year old watch a movie on this he'd be complaining the whole hour and a half "Why do I have to watch this blurry picture". I tried this with regular movies as well as cartoons. Someone said cartoons were crisp. They were more clear than regular movies... but NOT crisp. Every image was blurry and glowing, kinda dream-like - in a bad way. The picture never gets fully in focus, if one part is in focus than another part is not. But no part is ever crisp or clear. I quickly realized how much I'd rather watch my 27 inch tv, its not worth the novelty at all.

And here is the absolute worst part of this product - the fan! Oh my, this was loud. I would say its about as loud as my 9" table fan. Given that you cant adjust the throw of the projector - it could be sitting right next to you - but it really doesn't matter because even at the other side of the room the fan is too loud.

I sound like a complainer, but honestly - I knew I was buying a cheap projector and didn't expect much. But I'm very surprised that they manufactured this and decided to actually put it to market in this condition. Save your $59, $100, $300 or whatever and put it towards a real projector for a few hundred bucks - frankly money in your pocket is much better than this junk in your living room.

well i ordered it used, got it home hooked it up
and nothing.
took out old bulb and shined a flashlight through it, seems that the display is working fine, just no light
will be picking up another bulb in the morning and if it works out ill post another review,
so far not impressed, could be the manufactures or the sellers fault.
