A Great Scanner for OCR
I bought the CanoScan 8800F as an upgrade from my trusty CanoScan 4400F which I used for several years as part of a system that converts text to speech, as a reading aid for my low vision. I often scan a hundred or more pages at a time, and the procedure is highly repetitive; I hoped the 8800F would make the process go faster. As soon as I connected the scanner and made the first few scans, I knew I had made a good choice.

The 8800F has two advantages over the 4400F that I noticed immediately. First, there is no warm-up time for the light source in the 8800F. The 4400F has a cold fluorescent bulb that takes about 30 seconds to warm up when it is cold, and if it sits for a few minutes it does another short warm up before it will scan. The 8800F, on the other hand, has an LED light source that requires no warm up at all. The 4400F leaves its light source on for 12 minutes after a scan (this time is adjustable) to shorten the warm up time, whereas the 8800F shuts its light source off after each scan. Second, the 8800F scans faster than the 4400F. It seems to be about twice as fast, though I have not measured the scan times. These two advantages enable me to be about 50% more productive with the 8800F than with the 4400F, which makes the 8800F worth the higher price.

The two scanners have the same size platen (scanning surface) that takes document sizes up to A4. Most of my scanning is of books, and most of the time I can lay the book flat and scan two pages at once, though for larger books I am only able to scan a single page at a time. It would be nice to find a scanner that can accommodate larger formats, but I did not find one among the consumer scanners that I examined.

The 8800F has a power button, which the 4400F does not. Both scanners have the same buttons that you can use to initiate various scan operations. I never use these, as I always control scans through the software. On the 8800F the buttons are on the top rather than on the front, as for the 4400F, where I would often bump them with my arm, causing a flurry of dialogs to open on the screen.

The basic software user interface is the same for both scanners and consists of two applications that work together: ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5 and Canon Scan Gear. PhotoStudio is a combination image editing and scanner control program. It calls Scan Gear to do each scan and accumulates scanned images which you can edit and save. The 8800F comes with several utilities which I haven't used, and also comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and 5.0.

If you do a lot of OCRing, as I do, avoid the ScanSoft OmniPage SE application that comes with the scanner. It is old and extremely buggy. I used it after I bought the 4400F and was in OCR hell for a year until I wised up and bought the latest version of OmniPage Professional, which seemed like magic after that. OmniPage can integrate with Scan Gear, which improves scanning efficiency for OCR operations. I also tried ReadIris 11, but it had a peculiar bug that duplicated letters in OCR'd text. ReadIris technical support never responded to my query about that.

The 8800F has lots of other capabilities that I have not tried yet. I understand that it shines as a photo, slide and negative scanner. I don't know if there is a better scanner out there, but the 8800F suits me very well.

Awesome customer support from Canon
I purchased the CanoScan 8800F to digitize over 2000 slides and am very satisfied with my purchase. Being able to preview each slide and adjust the different setttings to improve the quality was great, but it was also easy to establish settings that seemed to work well for most slides. I am not a computer expert, so when I ran into difficulties with the software, I simply called Canon and received outstanding customer service. He walked me through the entire scanning process (including waiting while I went to the closet to find actual slides). He also explained that all the software provided in the box was not necessary (just offered for free from other companies). The Canon software works great, and thanks to customer service, was easy to understand and use. I would highly recommend this scanner along with the customer support from Canon.

35 slide digitizing
No technical details here. I bought it to digitize 35 mm slides and it takes about 5 minutes to do 4 slides at 300 dpi. Quality is good enough that they are fine on a 35 in. TV.

A great disappointment
This is a printer, scanner, faxer and copier. You don't need to have it attached to a PC for it to work. The menus are wonderful, and it's very easy to use, print, copy or fax! To top it off, this is a cheap product, but of course you get what you pay for.

Without realizing it, this is my second of three Brother all in one printers. I may sound like a satisfied customer with loyalty like mine to have three brother printers in three years, but that is because each one has broken within a year. My Brother MFC-3240C always had constant paper jams. Serious paper jams, it would take a normal sized piece of paper and crumple it up down to a centimeter in size. Then I'd have to open it and figure out a way to get the paper out.

Finally, the last straw was the permanent paper jam. A mysterious one. The printer tells me there is a paper jam, and I go nuts trying to find the jam. I went so far as to take it apart and put it back together only to discover there was no paper in it at all. Not a sliver of paper, nothing at all! It says there is a jam still.

I've looked online for support, because Brother technical support was no help at all. Forums have told me that paper jams are quite common with this model of Brother printer. I am greatly disappointed.

Avoid at all costs!!
Like another reviewer stated, this thing becomes no more than a paperweight after the ink runs out. It does not print unless ALL cartridges are full, even if you are ok with black and white only!! I recently bought a new set of ink cartridges, and in less than a month the printer will not function since the yellow is empty. This is absurd. Brother should be issuing out refunds for this thing. I also own a 7 year old HP Deskjet, which, even with its age, is my only reliable printer in the house.

Goodwill bound
I used this model as a scanner. Mechanically, it was fine and delivered image quality consistent with resolution specs. There is no reason to believe that it would not have worked equally well as a fax machine.

But the driver used to force my OS to crash (XP Professional) and perform a defensive memory dump about once every week or 10 days. I understand that no one is perfect, and tried a couple of times to locate driver updates but there were none available. Unacceptable. If you buy this machine, throw the the driver disk out so it can't interact with your operating system. I really shouldn't have waited this long. Buy one used, at best, obviously.

I switched to an HP Officejet J4550 for feeder-scanner purposes, and have experienced no problems with the driver.

Garbage
Do not buy this printer unless you really feel the need to waste money. If I could give it zero stars, I would. I have had this printer for less than a year. If any of the cartridges goes out it will not allow you to print at all. Tonight, I went out and bought replacement cartridges at the sum of $40. Came home and installed them. The printer will only tell me that there are no cartridges installed. Won't even let me use the cleaning utility. I recommend that you think twice before buying any Brother product.

Do Not Buy
Any money you save on the cheap price you will more than make up for paying for ink. I get 5+/- one to two page faxes a week and go through a black ink cartridge every 2 months and have to replace the color catridges every 3-4 months. The machine virtually disables itself if any ink cartridge runs low. You can't even use the scan functions. In addtion the machine forces you to change them when ther is ink clearly visible in the cartridges they are not empty.

terrible gimmic
The device is totally worthless. Unless your trying to get out of carbon emissions it is total junk.
You actually get advertising as your trying to do an analysis of your car. It ask you on several
screens do you want to buy this for $15. Do you want to buy this for $10. Yet I was like I paid
$80 for what? I get no diagnostics other then it can read my ID of my car so what theirs a damn
plate next to my windshield I don't need this. So I used the software went to website it was like a form that you can submit that does nothing other then if you plug in the USB cable to device upload it. You don't get anything other then more advertising. This whole device is worthless. I test my mother's SUV . I tried testing my BLAZER. I tried my sisters DODGE. No information. I was like at least tell me what's OK. No, it suppose to give me back information well to get that you says you need to pay $15 to view this in the Digital Display.

Equus 3100 Innova CanOBD2 Diagnostic Tool
This check engine light reader is one of the nicest home mechanic readers I have ever used. I used to be a service manager at a Ford dealership and miss the ability to use the actual computers that the mechanics use, but am very satisfied with this replacement. Most auto parts stores will scan your vehicle for you and some will clear the light for you and some wont. You don't have to worry about that with this scanner.

I believe this is the best scanner for the money. The higher dollar scanners that are offered have features that the average person will never use. If you are that caliber of a mechanic you are probably not looking at this unit anyway. It is nice to have a reader that gives you the problem in english right then and not have to take a number to the computer or other book and look up whats wrong. Of course the reader does not always diagnose the problem but atleast it gives you a starting point. If you want to use the advertised additional online help that is advertised with this be prepared to pay for a membership (nothing in life is free).

I like it
Does exactly what I needed. Gives a full definition, no need to look up codes. More expensive ones had more features, cheaper ones had less, this was a great balance for the price.

Is it worth it
I am thrilled with the proformance of this scanner. Initally I was concerned if it would perform and be understandable. It does super well, and is capable to a lot more than I was aware of. Yep, good buy. Service was outstanding. Arrived on time and ready to go. Good communications, and service.

Comparative Results
Recently I needed to convert a magazine article to Microsoft Word. I used 4 programs, Adobe 9, OmniPage 17, PaperPort 12, and Read I.R.I.S. Pro 12. Read I.R.I.S. did the most accurate conversion. Adobe 9 did a good job converting to PDF but the MS Word rendering was not a good as Read I.R.I.S. When converting other material I test with these four programs and the best performer is not always the same. It depends upon the nature and the quality of the source.

Just trying to help
I am 70 and not very fast at learning complex things. All I wanted was a way of scanning text files, like Tables of Contents of music books, in order to put them into an Excel file for searching. I can scan them into Word, but I get the editable text in a frame that I can not transfer to Excel. The clue must be in the manual. I will keep looking.
Such a project used to be simple, but today's software programs are too complex.

can't get it to work.
I e-mailed Iris to get help and have not heard back from them. When the scaned copy goes to word I can't read or edit it. I have Iris 7, Iris 9, now Iris 11 and I had trouble with them all. (Help) Thank you, Frank

Mediocre in all respects
Delivery was tediously slow (approx 10 days). Control formats are functionally simplistic and almost misleading as to their impact on the scanned image text content. Product might have a value equivalent to the reduced price but most certainly not that of the original retail pricetag.

Late 60s to early 70s revival
I bought this to convert my dads old slides into something that is now useful. If you are in need of something that is cheap and that can go through a bunch of slides quickly this product will do. Unfortunately, it tends to oversaturate brighter photos and you can't improve such images in picture editing software. That being said some of the darker indoor slides converted quite nicely and I now have some nice images of my siblings from age 0 to 6 years old.

If you do buy one, I'd suggest buying a can of air too because the dust on the slides not only effects that image but gets stuck in the unit. The brush provided just won't do.

White balance
The white balance is incorrect and cannot be changed. I got this scanner to digitize the old photos my father and father-in-laaw had taken when we were children. Almost all of them come out over exposed even though the exposure and colors on the slide are perfect. This is a terrible disappointment.

Works for me & great fun
I think I might have a newer model of this - the sticker on the bottom says it is a SLIDES2PCMK2 & it looks different than the one shown here. But it seems to have all the same features and accessories. The box said it works with Windows 7 - which is why I think it might be a newer version. Anyway.

To start off let me explain why I'm giving this four stars and not five. The box says it should work with Windows 7, but I could not get it to. Course, that might be more of a problem with my running Win 7 Pro 64-bit. There is a 64-bit driver, but I think it's for Vista. I did however get this scanner to work on my older Win XP machine, which is fine with me. I did not install the photo editing software that comes with the scanner - ArcSoft PhotoImpressions 6.1.56.147. Instead, I'm using Adobe Photoshop 7 and that seems to work just fine. I did have a bit of a problem when I hooked up the scanner for the first time. While the driver showed up in Photoshop's list of import devices - it locked up when I tried to open it. Rebooting the machine cleared that up. I guess Photoshop needed to be restarted after the new device driver was installed.

So far I've just played with this scanner for a couple hours tonight. Scanning in a few slides and negatives to get a feel of how this scanner works. I'm pretty happy with the results - course that is keeping in mind that this is a $60+/- device. Most of what I'm going to be scanning with this device are old slides and old negatives - stuff from back in the early 60's (maybe even late 50's) and some stuff from the 70's / 80's too. A lot of stuff which ain't in the best of shape - stuff that was kept in a hot attic. Which is one of the reasons that I want to use Photoshop, so that I can at least do some repair after scanning the images. The quality of the scan depends on the quality of the slide/negative. The stuff that is in pretty great shape scans great, the stuff that is faded and the colors have shifted scan pretty poorly. The scans are 5MP, which makes them 2592x1680. Not exactly high quality these days, but adequate for my needs. Yeah there are probably scanners that do higher resolutions, but those cost more than what I was willing to spend.

I may come back later and write about how this scanner works - what sets you go through to scan something.

incomplete shipment
The package did not contain the following
1 .slide tray holder
2.negative tray holder
3.optic cleaning toolbrush.
I did not open the package immediately on receiving as it was to be given as a gift.
I am unable to rate its performance as I dont have the trays to load
Hope the trader will be kind enough to send the missing items at the ealiest.

This, like other Ion products, is a complete waste of money. I gave it 1 star because zero isn't an option.
