Good scanner, so-so software
I own CanoScan LiDe200. This newer 210 model is essentially the same, but now with Windows 7 driver. Good scanner for personal use. Good image quality. I am not a picture-quality expert, so no complaints in that area. Also, the features that I like are the Z-Lid and the USB connection (no additional power plug required). However, the software is so-so for both models. Confusing to navigate between screens, in my opinion. The software that comes with the 210 model offers no improvement over the older version, at least from what I can see. Also, the 210 model comes in black, which I don't like (but others may dig).

If you are using Windows 7 and are choosing between 200 or 210, I would suggest just getting the newer model, even though you have to pay a few bucks more. Canon has the Windows 7 driver for the 200 model available on its website, but I still cannot get it to work on my Windows 7 computer. The 210 model obviously did not have that issue.
Amazingly small, low power, good results, and LED based!
I'm not an expert when it comes to judging image quality-so while I'm giving the LiDE210 a great score, I'm not 100% sure if it's image results are as good, worse, or better than comparable relatively high end consumer scanners. I can say the results look good, and so far look the same (to me) as a high end HP model from a few years ago that I use at work.

I was shocked by how small the scanner's box is-in fact I thought maybe I'd accidentally ordered something that would only scan photos. Amazed again when I pulled the scanner out of the box...although it accepts full size papers (and it looks like legal sized too, although I haven't tested any yet) it's easily less than half the size of my HP from work. While it still takes up a decent amount of space on a desk (since it has to be big enough for the scanner bed to accept full size papers), it still somehow feels like it fits in better than older scanners.

Also amazing...it doesn't use a power supply. It pulls all its power over the USB bus from the computer it's connected to...it apparently only draws 2.5 watts while in use, which to me is amazing. Not having a power brick helps make the unit feel smaller too (and means it isn't using power when the computer is off).

The small size and low power use are presumably the result of using LEDs (apparently tri-color) instead of florescent tubes like older scanners use. Another benefit-no mercury or UV radiation.

I was also pleased to discover that even on XP, I was able to use it out of the box without installing the included software. Windows Update found the driver for it, and it was working with Windows' built-in software within a few seconds. (Though I think it's probably better to install the included software to get access to all it's features.)

It's small, seems to give good results, and hardly uses any power...so far seems like a great choice!

It works
Push a button it scans, sends to printer, or saves as pdf. Price is right.
What scanners should be or do
I have a ton of old papers I'd like to get rid of without losing the information they contain. That might be a slight exaggeration. There are sixteen crates about twelve inches by eighteen inches, ten inches high, and a couple of larger boxes, all down in my basement. There are many boxes full of papers upstairs in my computer room. I need to get them scanned, shredded and out of my life. I also have a hope chest full of photos, left by my mother. I don't know all of the people in the pictures but my wife and kids don't know any of them. I need to save them in digital form.

I don't use Windows. Most scanners expect you to install their driver software because you are probably using some version of the Windows operating system. I don't think scanners should concern themselves with my choice of operating systems. You should be able to place a paper or photo in the machine and produce a digital image file without having to use a computer. If I have a document several pages long, I should be able to save it as a PDF file without tying up my computer. If I have a photo or a slide (my dog ate about a third of my slide collection one afternoon), I should be able to save it in my choice of format without involving a computer. The scanner shouldn't worry about whether I use a desktop, laptop, netbook or cellular phone (I use an Apple iPod Touch most of the time).

I want a high quality duplex scanner I can feed piles of documents that will write the images to a memory stick or memory chip. No such machine is currently available at a reasonable price.

Failing that, I wanted something inexpensive but of reasonable quality that would work with my aging Apple Mac Mini with no fuss about installation. I wanted something that Just Works.

The Canon scanner comes close. It does what I want it to do without a lot of fuss. So far, this machine works well.

Oh, it has some features I'm not too happy about. There are some buttons on the end of the machine that, when accidentally hit, do strange things, never what I expect or want. I could live without the buttons. I try hard to ignore the buttons. That's about the only thing wrong with the machine, apart from the computer connection thing.

It takes about half a minute to scan a sheet, twice as long if I have to scan both sides. It is small enough that I can pack it away when I'm not using it. It has a stand that allows it to work standing up instead of lying down; I tested it, it works, but I have little use for such a feature. My shredder is getting lots of use, papers are no longer accumulating, and I'm happy with the few photos I've scanned so far.

Some day they'll come out with a full duplex automatic feed scanner that doesn't require a computer. I'll get one when they come out. Until then, this scanner will do.
Canon Scanner

The Canon LiDE200 Color Image Scanner was quick to set up and start using. The scanning results are great! One of the best things about this scanner is you are able to place many photos on the scanner and it will seperate each one on your computer to save. This saves time when scanning lots of photos. Just remember, you need to select color photo when doing color photos and black & white when doing black & white.
Canon scanners--always the best
I really like the Canon scanners and this one is no exception. I had to buy another scanner, just for the laptop and decided to look at the new versions of the one I liked so much for the desktop. This makes very good images, is lightweight and has a small footprint. Easy to install and use. I am pleased with my purchase and recommend it.
Portable Scanner
A portable scanner that works well on documents and photographs. It is ideal to have on hand to scan paperwork that needs to be emailed to clients, the office, etc. No problems were encountered with the installation of the scanner software or the operation of the unit itself.

EPSON V500 PHOTO SCANNER
I was in need of scanning numerous slides from my photo files. I wanted something that was simple and of high quality and something that would allow me to get more technical if I wished to. I have scanned over 200 slides and the results have been consitently excellent. I am now doing old photos as well. For the price, you can't beat the product.
Works Great on Snow Leopard
Purchased this item for use on my Core 2 Duo iMac running Snow Leopard. Didn't bother with the included disk and just downloaded new program right off Epson's web page. Spent the weekend scanning hundreds of color slides and photographs. Works without a problem and does amazing scans. Well worth the money. I am very happy with my purchase.
Fast, Easy Scanner capable of multiple scans
This is my 3rd flatbed scanner and by far the fastest and easiest to use. My previous scanners had to warm up and often wouldn't communicate with the driver. This scanner is ready from the moment it's turned on due to the LED technology. It will also scan multiple photos if they're spaced correctly. I've had as many as 6 different photos and documents on the glass and it scanned them all with the press of one button. My only criticism would be the software because it seems you have to click through some eroneous menus to get where you wanted to be in the program. To make it slightly harder, the help button isn't very helpful and the manual is electronic. Despite that though I'd recommend this product to someone wanting to scan a large volume of photos for archival and recreational purposes.
works great for photo negatives
we use this to make all of my parents old photo negatives into digital images, it works great
Good products deserve Reviews
I didn't expect very professional results with this scanner, all I wanted was a good enough scanner. The Epson Perfection V500 provided me more than adequate manual set-up, a whole range of monitoring capabilities and great speed for multiple project scans.
All these is enough to label this scanner as a professional model.

Practical
The scanner is very reasonably priced. Its portability is excellent. After a few minutes you can get the hang of it on how fast to move it over the scanned surface to be able to get a good image. In less than one minute of evaluating the scanned images one is able to learn how to move the scanner. I have obtained great results scanning both color and b/w images. It has proved invaluable when the sources of information scanned cannot be removed from a particular area. Images obtained from 3 d surfaces like books have been good and legible. The included software x ocr is fairly good. The fact that the equipment does not need to be attached to a computer to be able to scan is an advantage as one can travel lighter. It doesn't work if the microsd is not inserted so be sure to buy one along with the scanner if u dont have one already. Controls are toggle switches very easy to use; included instructions straight to the point. LCD is tiny so if you're above 40 you'll need eyeglasses to see well for the first few scans. You'll memorize the location of the icons for the next scans. I liked it so much that I have bought some to give away as gifts for friends and family.
Pictures, documents, and more!
I purchased this item to take with me to an out of state family reunion. I scanned over 500 photos and documents. It is incredible! The quality is astonishing! The old 1800's photos came out very clear, even zooming in on them. The colors are great. On the documents the lettering is crisp and clear.
You can either plug in the USB cord, or put the card in your computer. Comes up very fast.
I would recommend this to anyone who needs a scanner. It's the size of a curling iron. I can't say enough about it!
Worth every penny.
Took me 20 minutes to get used to the scanner after that it works like a breeze. Saves me hours at the photocopier doing research for school. I highly recommend this scanner for college people you will be glad you bought it. Great quality great picture great price.
Cannot imagine my life without it
I can scan all the research articles in the library in a few minutes. It has some trouble reaching the text close to the bindings but it is still worth every penny I paid for it. It has saved tons of paper waste I would otherwise accumulate while writing my thesis. Super easy to use and the battery life is actually better than promised on the packaging. I am using rechargeable batteries and I easily scan 1000 pages in low quality mono mode (which works fine for black and white text). I would recommend this scanner to all students who need to work with printed literature because in a few months the price of the scanner is returned by not having to pay for each page copied in the library (and you saved a bunch a trees as well).
So far, so good....
I just ordered this from HSN to do documents and contracts. Got it going right out of the box, calibrated and scanned my wife's placemat from the table. Surprisingly good and in color. Tried my daughters picture, very good image. Also does b&w pix, not bad. I'm still going to take this on the road to see how it does business documents, but so far a nice device. Came with micro SD 2gb card and carrying sleeve. I see the Iris on for almost half, but not good reviews. The proof is in the quality. I figured it was worth the try.....hope this helps with your decision.

Decent quality, but only for FLAT NON-reflective surface
Scan quality on this machine is not bad, but ONLY if the object you are scanning is totally flat and non-reflective. Objects that are even 1/5th of an inch off the surface will appear rather blurry, and anything reflective will leave streaks in the scan due to the CIS scan head. Otherwise, scanning speed was quick at 300 dpi, but 600 was another story.

Only buy this scanner if all you scan are totally flat objects with no recess (like documents or photos), otherwise get a CCD scanner with cold cathode light source or else you'll be disappointed.
Great for the price
I'm sure it could be faster and have more bells and whistles, but I was looking for a basic cheap scanner that would scan things, and that's what I got.

Windows 7 installation was pretty straightforward. Note that I had to actually follow the directions it came with, and install the driver from the CD, and not use the driver Windows found for me.
Great scanner for the value!
Bought this scanner as a gift for my husband. He loves it! It's easy to use, compact and a great scanner for the price!
awesome stuff
This stuff is very light so that I can just put it in bag together with my laptop,
I do it every time I go o the library.
excellent price, great performance - Canon LiDE 100 Scanner
I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 which forced me to replace my 5 year old scanner (no Windows 7 drivers). Shopped several different models and makes - the Cannon LiDE 100 was an excellent price - comes with all the scanning software for getting up and running in minutes. The speed is great - even when scanning full-size color images. The scanner can handle up to 8.5 x 11 documents. I highly recommend this scanner for everyday home/small business applications. epson 300 photo scanner
I bought this to scan a great deal of slides. I use this scanner nonstop, from morning to night. It is the best scanner I have ever bought. It works with both xp and vista. It is quiet, a lot of times I don't hear it when it gets done so I have to keep tabs on the screen. I am very happy that it scans like it should, I have had no problems with it. I haven't done negatives yet but I have done pictures and the quality of both the slides and pic's turned out great. It does take longer with higher dpi but I organize in between. I have scanned well over 1500 slides and still going. It doesn't come with a physical direction book, that is on the disk when you load it. I would rather have a book. All in all this is a great scanner and I would recommend it to friends.
Espon ships it broken - then forces you to go to a repair shop
Massive delays. The scanner didn't work when it came (long vertical bar down the center of each scan - with wrinkling effect around the edges). Tech support identified it as a broken scanner, but instead of sending me a new one, the forced me to drive 15 minutes to a repair center. The repair center said it would take 4 days. But after 4 days they couldn't fix it because EPSON wouldn't send them the part.
Everything I had hoped for
I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews, especially since I have an Apple laptop. I am so glad that I didn't listen to them. I recieved this item yesterday and I couldn't wait to get started on scanning some of my old pictures. I got it out of the box, installed the software and it was off and running. The install was really easy. I put the pictures on the scanner, pressed the scan button and they popped up on the computer screen. It took me a couple of tries to figure out how close or how far the pictures could be for the scanner to detect that they were different pictures. That is the feature that sold me the scanner. I love that I can put 3-4 regular sized photos on their and it automatically creates seperate files for them. This scanner is honestly worth double the cost, but I am so glad that I didn't have to pay it to get all of the amazing things this scanner has to offer. If you are on the fence about buying this, just do it, you will be so glad that you did!
Great for scanning film!!
Basically, im rating/reviewing based on the film scanning feature. I've used other Epson scanners for film and the results were not always great. I've used a Plustek scanner, and ofcourse the results are top professional quality. However, after using the Epson V300, I'd say this scanner works just as good as a Plustek scanner. It scans negatives in under a minute, using the professional mode, your able to get accurate color results. Even though the images dont come out as sharp like the Plustek does, I was still very impressed with results. I'll be using this scanner for a very long time. I'm a very happy customer! :)
very good consumer grade scanner
Very high quality output for the money. Construction is only consumer grade, however, so don't plan to bang it around or frequently move it from place to place without consequences. Not the type of scanner you would want in a busy office or other high traffic operation. Perfect though for personal use, and very economical. High quality scans of 35mm negatives, photos, drawings, and objects. Have not tried it with slides yet, but I assume the results will be similar to film. Software is light and useful.

ScanSnap 1500
The ScanSnap does everything very well, it is fast and easy to set up and use.
So happy with my empty file cabinet!
I've scanned my whole file cabinet, in my spare time, in a matter of hours. Anything that couldn't be scanned and shredded should have been in a safe deposit box, and now is. I feel better knowing that if the house burns down, I won't lose any information (since I couple this with automatic online backup!). I like knowing that if my house is burglarized, I won't be an easy victim of identity theft (since my hard drive is encrypted). This was one project I should not have put off as long as I did, but I delayed because of the relatively high price for the item. Glad I bought it!
Help.... I've run out of stuff to scan!
Subject pretty much says it all... This is a JOY of a scanner to work with and I've scanned E_V_E_R_Y_T_H_I_N_G we had cluttering the file cabinets, kitchen table, dining table, living room, dressers, etc etc etc... Yea we have a bit of a problem when it comes to clutter and knowing what to junk and what to hold on to. SO I finally had enough and snapped this badboy up. Well, it scanned EVERYTHING I could throw at it... It even scanned cardboard CD sleeves that had game serial numbers on them. Why? Because I could! Then with assistance of a paper shredder... Our 'clutter problem' was greatly reduced.

Okay the device comes just as advertised and includes everything you need to use it.

It scans all sorts of ODD sized paper... Business cards, small scraps of paper with indistinguishable words or numbers scribbled on them, yea just about anything. Oh it doesn't like 'super thin' paper all that much (especially if its been folded or is old)... but it comes with a clear plastic carrier sheet that will get the paper to scan. It'll handle 'US Letter' and 'US Legal' sized pages (and smaller down to a very small scrap of paper) or just about anything that's under 9" wide (give or take) it'll scan pretty long documents (longer than legal) provided they are under that 9" give or take in width.

Oh and as for speed? It's very very fast and it holds quite a large number of pages at one time... 50+ if I remember correctly. For kicks I had a magazine that had a stapled binding so I pulled out the 3 stables and then divided the pages in half (at the fold where the staples were) and proceeded to scan the entire magazine and that had to be a easy 50+ pages. I'm actually contemplating getting a professional paper cutter and cut the bindings off my wife's paperback collection and scan them in so she can have them all on her iPad. This scanner was such a joy to work with it wouldn't be to tough...

Oh also single pass scans BOTH sides of a paper so no messing around with trying to figure out if you scanned everything properly. There is a setting in the scanner preferences that says "Scan Both Sides" that I think I had to check... but once set, the scanner is now scanning both sides as needed. If the 'back' is blank it doesn't create an empty page which, I guess is the way most people would want it to work like. However even the slightest smudge on the back of a page usually got detected and I'd just remove those as I found em.

The only other comment I could make is make sure if you want the Mac OS X version of Adobe Acrobat v8 (old) software you MAKE SURE you buy the S-1500M version... If you don't care then either one has a CD with OS X drivers but I messed up and got the non-M version and it came with Acrobat v9 for Windows. I'm not all that disappointed and I'm certainly not gonna send it back just for Acrobat but Mac users be extra careful if you're expecting to get Acrobat for OS X.

Now I just gonna get more ink for my printer so I can printout more stuff to scan... Waiting on the mailman takes far too long! lol lol lol :)

Oh before I forget: To anyone looking for a great photo scanner... As I stated above, I did scan a color magazine and it looked 'just fine' to me... but if you saw thru my eyes that might not be a ringing endorsement you're looking for. :) However, as others may have already posted.. this product is really built from the ground up as a document scanner and it does that task extremely well. It'll scan photos, sure! However, if you're expressly looking for an exceptional __photo scanner__ you might want to keep looking, I'm certain you'll find other scanner more suited to that task.

For people seeking a good document scanner... In my eyes you can stop looking... THIS is the scanner you've been looking for.
Some of the software still seems a bit buggy
I have ordered several of these. After a while, some of the scanned pages still clump together, but its still a pretty invaluable tool for any office. Main gripe is with the software itself, its a bit more confusing than the last generation of these products, they have you go through an extra step in saving the projects, makes multiple scanning away from the PC a bit of a hassle to be honest. Maybe I'm missing the option to automatically dump the scanned PDFs into a folder.
A, not A+ or A-
Lightning fast. No problem with sheet feeding but I don't put more than 20 pages in it at a time. Software seems to cause a few extra clicks if you are going from PDF to JPG for example. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. 200+ pages scanned so far.

Epson Scanner
Works fine. Works with Windows 7 and Paperport 7. I have this working with Windows 7 32 bit though. I don't think this will Paperport 7 will work with W7 64 bit. W7 64 bit is a waste of time and rediculous if you are only running 3 gig of memory and all your programs are 32 bit.
EXCELLENT SCANNER FOR THE MONEY
Received scanner from Amazon in perfect condition. Set up was easy on my Macbook and everything worked as advertised. Auto feature is great. Would recommend this scanner for home use.
Scanner tainted by bad software implementation
(OSX Review - but PC owners should also be aware this could be applicable to them as well)

On the scanning side, it's a solid choice - there are really only a couple of caveats to be aware of before jumping in and buying one.

1. The software installation for Mac OSX is a nightmare. (Also see: #3) Not only does it take an extremely long time - but you cannot just start the install, leave and expect it to run. It has multiple components that each require license agreements to approve and multiple stages of permissions and selections - repeated checking of tick boxes - OK, Approve, Yes, Install etc. on and on and on. This is really annoying and could be consolidated into one global install if they were so inclined - but instead they put the burden directly on the customer. We didn't time it but it seemed like 30 minutes of babysitting to install everything! (Probably more like 15)

2. Sneaky unwanted passenger aboard! (STAY TUNED - SOLUTION BELOW!) This one took a very long time to track down - with a team of experts... Along with the software install in OSX, one is going to receive a new, constant, unwanted, and unknown flow of CONSTANT outgoing data activity on one's network. Most people will not be watching their network data activity - but should for sake of security. This behaves just like a trojan or a hacker on your network taking something off of your computer in tiny bits - bit by bit. Epson will probably tell everyone it's harmless, and needed for some of their functions to stay "active". But anytime there is unknown data streaming out of your computer 24/7 without your knowledge or permission, it's just a huge red flag in our opinions.

3. In the hunt to track down the offending data transmitting problem mentioned above - we ran the UnInstaller. Thankfully this was a simple one step process - or so we thought. At first - it seemed like Epson was off the hook for causing the problem - since their software was now UnInstalled... but that would be WRONG! It seems the UnInstaller only removes *some* of the the software the Installers added - NOT ALL OF IT. Upon further inspection - there were two Epson folders remaining with 2 applications still installed and running... including the offending one which was causing all the problems - Epson Event Manager. Since the UnInstaller couldn't remove it - we had to use a 3rd party uninstaller utility (App Zapper) to clean it off of the system, and then trash the remaining folders. UnInstalling Event Manager solved the problems.

Resolution - Upon further inspection and research, Epson Event Manager by default, installs with a live "Network Scan" parameter switched ON.
Turning OFF "Enable Network Scan" stops this unwanted flow of outbound data from happening.
Knowing this - Our advice is to install the software and immediately turn OFF "Enable Network Scan" in Event Manager. Turn it ON only when you need to use it, and your network traffic will be otherwise normal.

We would still buy this scanner again - just wish this information were clearly disclosed up front, as it took days of detective work to deduce where the installed network leak was coming from. Even Epson's own Tech Support were baffled.
Shipping it with ONE Installer for everything, a FULL Uninstaller, and Network Scan OFF by default, would fix everything.

NOTE - This issue is applicable to MANY Epson products - not just this one scanner. Many owners of Epson printers also have reported this concern. Anything that installs Epson Event Manager for OSX is likely to exhibit the identical behaviors. (PC owners should also be aware this could be applicable to them as well)
I LOVE this scanner.
This is the best 70 bucks I've ever spent.

I've only been using it for pencil drawings and a couple of colored ones but overall this scanner does a GREAT job because of its high dpi. You can see the drawings so clearly it's as if you're holding it in your hand~. All the detail is there and there is no blur or weird coloring.

Scanning just takes seconds and then I'm good to go. I also like the 180 degree lid.

I was afraid if I was going to choose a scanner that wasn't going to do it's job because this is the first one I ever bought. But I absolutely LOVE this scanner to bits and very happy that I picked the right one for a decent price.
Epson Perfection Scanner V30
If you scan and copy a lot, this is not for you as it is very slow and takes several actions before printing. I for one do not copy and scan several things at a time so it works for me. The price is resonable. I had a HP Scanner that cratered after 5 years. You could copy and it would go straight to the printer, where the Epson does not. It goes to computer where you choose what application you want before going to printer

Probably Okay
For 120/220 film negatives you might want to think about something else. Although I'm not sure what if you are on a budget. And that's how I wound up with this product. Decent price, and the scans look good off of negatives and transparencies. Now, here's the problem: The scanning mask for negatives is not sufficiently large to handle 6x6 cm negatives ("two and a quarter square")in strips of four. A fairly common way of filing these back in the old days that fit a 12-shot roll on to an 8x10 inch contact sheet.

Looks like 6x7 cm will fit okay in threes. A few scans of these look good although the default scanner settings breaks them up into oddly chopped image pieces. One day soon I'll have a look at the rest of the software controls and settings to see if there's a way to make what I'm doing the default.

Scans from slides and prints look good. Didn't scan any transparency film (Fujichrome, Kodachrome, and the like)in uncut strips.

I got more or less what I expected because my selection was limited by price.
great scanner
Bought this for my wife and daughter to use. My wife is saving and repairing old family photos My daughter is a professional photographer with a home studio. I set it up and scanned the first photos. The first time I used it I took 3 or 4 try's messing around with the settings to see what they did to get a scan that I wanted. After that it was very easy. It works with windows xp and vista with out problems. It creates great scans and is faster than other photo scanners I have used. The ICE software works better than I expected, which can save considerable time when working with old photos. My only complaint is, why ship with last years photo shop elements when any one that uses elements regularly probably has upgraded any way.
Nice Scanner
I was forced to buy a new scanner because the Hewlett-Packard 5590 I was using self-destructed right after the warranty expired, and I received absolutely no consideration from HP. They charged me to do an online diagnostic, and told me the 5590 was not fixable. I had only given it very light use, too. So, I swore never to buy anything from HP again, and after checking everything out there, I bought the Epson Perfection V600, and I am pleased with it. My only complaint is that the documentation is rather limited, and you have to figure out certain functions intuitively. I have used scanners for many years, so that wasn't a problem for me. (I still have a perfectly good HP 2CX scanner which I updated when I connected it to an at the time new, but now old Windows 98 computer. It works fine but HP stopped updating the software for it to work with newer computers and newer versions of Windows). The setup for the Epson Perfection V600 is very simple--just plug it in, after first installing the software. I can't comment on its durability because it is new, and after my Hewlett-Packard experience, you can imagine my reluctance to commit to a durability rating on any product that is new.
Sweet Machine
I was using an old Microtek scanner attached to a Mac OS 9 machine. The old scanner was dying and I had upgraded to OS X throughout the house. So, I thought it was time to upgrade the scanner as well. I bought this Epson scanner for the primary purpose of scanning text documents although the idea of scanning some of my photographs from years gone by was attactive as well. SO far, I've only used the scanner for text documents; it has worked flawlessly - super fast and nearly automatic. A push of a button on the scanner and a click of teh mouse and I have a document that is immediately useful. At this point, I give this machine the highest rating. Can't comment about photos yet.
Very good photo scanner
I ordered the Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner because I was trying to scan 60 years worth of family photos (negative film, slides and prints) using a Epson V500. The V500 was doing a really great job on the film and slides but a lot of the prints were in poor condition. The V600 claimed to have Digital Ice for Prints capability. The V500's Digital Ice for film worked very well at cleaning up scans from film and slides and I had hoped that the DI for prints would be just as good.

The DI for prints was the only disappointment about this scanner. All it does is smudge any tears or blemishes on the prints. In my opinion it just doesn't work.

The rest of the claims for this scanner are true. Scans are sharp and well exposed. Color restoration works amazingly well on faded originals. It also does a good job on old prints that have developed a yellow or magenta color cast. I am very happy with the image quality and the controls available with the Epson software.

Hardware and software installation was super simple. Run the software off the CD, download the upgrade from the Epson website and plug the scanner into the Mac (iMac 27" running Snow Leopard OSX) - the setup is complete. could not be simpler.

Operation is also very simple and easy. The Epson Scan software has 4 levels of complexity. All 4 levels are easily accessible at all times. Full Auto Mode is the 'Point and Shoot' level. Professional Mode would be more for the D-SLR type of person. If you like to complicate your life there are third party drivers that allow you to tweak and manage every aspect of the scan.

Scans without Digital Ice are really quick compared to scanners I've used in the past. Digital Ice really slows things down. Scanning 4 - 35mm slides @ 3,200dpi without DI takes 2 minutes with DI it takes 10 minutes. The software for the Mac runs in the background and does not seem to slow down either my iMac or my Powerbook. I can scan while I work on other things. Very convenient.

Despite the time it adds to the scans, Digital Ice is definitely worth using. The scans are instantly usable without and post-scan touch up in PhotoShop. The end result is a huge time saving.

Output

Spectacular! Scans from 35mm color negatives scanned at 3,200 dpi with Digital Ice can be printed at 11X13 and look as good or better then the same size print produced by the photo store without any additional work. If your a PhotoShop or Elements wiz the results only get better. Scans from prints are also very good but will probably require clean-up in PhotoShop or Elements before you print them.

The Bad

As I mentioned earlier Digital Ice for Prints does nothing useful. Digital Ice for Film works very well on color negative film and non-Kodachrome slides. If you have lot of B&W film or Kodachrome slides, you are going to have to clean them up manually. I understand there is a Kodachrome friendly version of Digital Ice but Epson does not include it with their software.

I recommend this scanner to anyone who wants to make quality scans with a minimum of fuss. The value for the money is very high. If you have a scanner that is 4 or 5 years old or older the upgrade is worth it. If you have an Epson V500, the V600 is not that big an improvement.
