Canon LiDE Color Flatbed Scanner
Surprisingly versatile software functions are provided, especially for the price. I found the color reproduction to be very good, and copy features such as producing copies of different sizes than the original are very handy. The direct scan to an e-mail attachment is very useful. I use it also in conjunction with fax software on my PC, so scan to fax is seamless. Overall a very good value product.
Windows compatability
Bottom line: The scanner does not work with Windows 7. There is no indication on the amazon page that it is not compatible with windows 7. I contacted Canon tech service and they said, "sorry, we can't help you". Don't buy this scanner if you are looking at upgrading your computer at any time in the future.
Color Scan
This scannner worked exactly for the purpose I needed it to. I needed to scan some statistical sheets for bowling and email them to members of my league and it was so simple. Just put the sheet on the glass, scan and save. SO SIMPLE and portable and lightweight and the best part is the fact that it connects to my laptop with just the USB cord.
Good Sleek Design
It makes goog copies. You have to go a little further into the software in order to get good cropped results when scanning and copying.
Great for photos
I bought this scanner to copy dozens of old photos that are fading or are odd sizes; and this scanner lets me do that very easily, and the price seemed like a bargain. I especially like that I can scan up to four photos at once, and I get four separate pdf files. I use Picasa to retouch and resize the scanned photos.
I still use my HP inkjet for for daily printing and copying because ... I keep a 750GB Western Digital MyBook external drive attached to a USB port on the back of my 6-year-old desktop. When I connect the scanner to the USB port on the front of my desktop, it disables the MyBook external drive. Flash drives don't do that, and neither does a 500GB external drive. So, I have to restart my computer after using the scanner in order to use the external drive again.

Epson V300 Color Scanner
This V300 works very well with OCR program (included). It recognizes almost text document (with or without images). I like it.
EpsonV300 scanner met my expectation
bought it to digitize my family photo albums. No problem to set up and hook up to my XP PC. Very easy to use. The scanning software allows to scan a few photos at one time, which greatly improved work efficiency. Also the software feature allows me to adjust the histogram and color before it scans in; saving my time to adjust afterward. The quality of scanned photo at least the same as the original by naked eyes. Have not tried to scan negatives yet.
Great quality to price ratio, bad lifespan.
I bought this for Christmas last year & it died a mere 3 weeks into its service life. Something in the motor / sensor assembly wouldn't calibrate to zero when you power it on. It would just sit there with the LED lit up & stuck near the bottom of the device. Additional fidgeting with its buttons would cause all usb devices plugged in near the scanner to seize. I took it apart & the electronics are very simple & elegant inside. The part that failed does not seem to be replaceable or adjustable. There are very few parts inside.
Its a shame, because for the 3 weeks that it worked, it was my favorite scanner hardware. The LED was very high powered and well matched to the CCD, so the resulting images didn't require much tweaking in photoshop to make them 100% accurate.
The native resolution of the devices was VERY high compared to others in the price range. You don't need to interpolate the data coming in to get a large, printworthy size. Unscratched 35mm negatives often scanned better than dirty old prints, a testament to the adequacy & density of the device's ccd.
Epson seems to have the imaging formula down very well for doing LED scans with their first couple generations of LED based scanners. I'll give Epson another shot, but probably with next year's model instead of this one again.
High quality but inexpensive flatbed and film scanner
I bought the V300 for use at home to replace an older flatbed and a dedicated film and slide scanner. Both devices are no longer supported by their manufacturers and Windows 7 drivers were not available.
The Epson V300 fulfills both roles very adequately for me at an attractive price. Scan quality is just fine for my purposes, allowing full-screen enlarements for my 35mm negatives and slides and reproducing very well on a color printer. The reasonable price is just icing on the cake.
I would recommend the Epson V300 to anyone looking for a dual-purpose scanner for everyday use.
Good product for good price
I have had this scanner for about three weeks now, and use it to scan 35mm negatives and prints. I've owned many HP printers and scanners over the years. This is the first time that I've bought Epson. I have to say this is a very very good product for the money. The ease of setup and usage would definitely make me recommend this to a non-computer type person. I will definitely look at Epson products first from now on when looking at any future purchases. Goodbye HP.

FUJITSU BUMMER
Hi.
My old Fujitsu scansnap worked just fine until upgrading to a Windows 7 machine. The following is my tech support inquiry and subsequent reply:
I've been through the Fujitsu website and I cannot determine how to run my older Fujitsu Scansnap model # fi-5110EOX2 on a new machine.
It ran fine on 32 bit Win XP. I am unable to run it with existing software on a new machine (64 bit - WIN 7).
Following some webpage instructions, I downloaded a Vista upgrade prior to trying to install the WIN 7 upgrade, but the Vista software wouldn't run on the 64 bit platform.
Is this older scansnap machine incompatible with WIN 7?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
We do not have Windows 7 drivers for the fi-5110EOX2 and do not have plans on releasing drivers for this model. We support our scanners for 5 years after they have been discontinued and this model has been discontinued for more then this period of time. Please look into upgrading to the S1500
Thank you
Fujitsu Computer Products of America
How is that for B.S.? The recommended "upgrade" is well over $400.
Small business not requiring high speed scanning? Try a 1200 dpi flatbed for < $75.
Works just fine.
Anyone like to buy a quite functional fi-5110EOX2 scansnap?
Fantastic Scanner
We started out with one of these fantastic little scanners and have now added 3 more. We use them to scan documents and nothing that we have ever used works better. Recently we added one to scan photographs of homes that we insure and although the type and quality of the photographs varies from good to poor, this scanner allows us to scan them into an electronic file and the result is a scanned photo that is just as good as the original. Due to the differing size and type of pictures we do them one at a time. For documents, however we are able to put a small stack into the scanner and the automatic feed pulls them though with the press of a button. The software that comes with the scanner enables duplex scanning of documents into file storage or conversion into MS Office programs with ease. The OCR works well also This is one of the best, easy to use and inexpensive (for the work it does) small desktop scanners on the market. We love them and will be buying more as the need arises.
ScanSnap is a Snap to use!
I purchased the ScanSnap to make scanning business documents easier for my customers to read and reduce the hassle of faxing. I had an "All In One Printer" and was scanning each sheet individually; it was slow and cumbersome to use. The ScanSnap is so much better it is hard to describe: faster scanning, saves to the computer faster and does both sides of a page automatically. In addition, it takes up a small foot print, it was simple to set up and has good customization software for scanning typical documents (invoices, bills, business licenses, etc.) and , did I mention, it does all of this fast! I plan on purchasing another to begin archiving old documents that we are required to keep for 10 years. I highly recommend this product.
Businessmen, this is the best...
I have held off from buying scanners for years. I knew I had a big case coming up wherein I would be scanning literally 100's of sheets of paper...applications, approvals, proofs and so forth...
I began looking for a scanner that would do this effortlessly and began reading all about scanners...canons, HP's, epsons and on and on. I saw a very expensive Fujitsu in a friends office that was scanning about as quick as he could shove stuff through it. I knew that was the feature I needed...so I began reading about Fujitsu. Well, the scanner he had cost about 1800 bucks, but the S1500 cost 400 bucks and seemed to do most of the same things the more expensive one did. In any event, it sure beat the pants off the one-page-at-a-time desktops that I automatically have with my HP printers. So, I ordered the Scansnap 1500. It arrived from Amazon in about 3 days. I plugged it in, stuck in the software and bingo, it was ready to go. It is about the size of one of those specialty bread loafs sold at the grocery store...you know, the 12 multi-grain stuff. It opens with the lifting of 2 flaps...the lifting turns it on (shuts it off when you close the flaps). Instant on. will scan 50 sheets... when done, it gives you a screen that says "save to folder" or "email". Click on it. If the scanned material is too big for its email memory..you have to save it to a folder, go into your word documents, and send it from there. I have high speed phone lines. All 50 pages zip right through...and saves the sent email in your Outlook so you have a nice proof. In the past 25 days (which is about as long as I have had it) I have scanned maybe 500 to 600 pages. some as big as 50 pages, and some as small as 2. It has not failed once. For the average small Businessman (real estate, insurance, accounting, mfg. rep.), I can't see that 400 bucks is too large of an investment into something that demonstrates this much quality. And it does color too. I did try a couple of photos.. Not being a bit photo buff, they looked fine to me, but I could tell that they were not 100% quality reproductions, so I think that a slower scanner might be better for photos...
but, if you were scanning some pix to send to grandma or a photo of a building that you were working on for a client, it would be just fine. I give this a 100% satisfaction rating.
Great Little Scanner -- How Do You Turn Off "Doc-Auto-Open"?
Our office needs a second scanner so this is what we bought. This unit is surprisingly small (which is a good thing).
Took less than 10 minutes from opening the box to scanning. Very easy and intuitive to set up and use. I'm scanning only documents into the pdf format, mostly black and white, nothing fancy. Fast scanning!
The only annoyance is -- the scanned pdf file is automatically open on the computer screen. This remains the case even after de-selecting "show scan result." Does anyone know how to turn off this function?
Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner
The Epson Perfection V500 Photo offers extraordinary quality and versatility with 6400 dpi resolution and an earth-friendly LED light source for greater productivity -- all at an amazing value. Remove dust and scratches from slides, negatives and film. Or, restore faded color photos with one touch. Then, take your photos further with the included Adobe® Photoshop® Elements. When it's time to archive important documents, you can scan multiple documents fast with the optional automatic document feeder. It's all at your fingertips with this powerful performer. Best of all, the energy-efficient LED means you can work smarter with faster scans and lower power consumption. Plus, with no warmup time, it's easier than ever to get started.

V500Scanner
Item was shipped when said, arrived in great shape, Easy to setup and output was fantastic. Used to scan slides and output was fantastic and so easy to use.
On film
Before purchasing an Epson Perfection V500 Scanner I read only the one star (bad) reviews. As I needed a way to scan 120/220 films, I took the plunge and bought one anyway. Most of the negative reviews seemed to revolve around software issues, particularly the supplied Photoshop Elements program. I have had no problems in this area, although, I already had Photoshop Elements 2.0 in my PC and did not use the supplied program. I have Photoshop Elements 6 in my MacBook Pro, but have not tried using the Epson V500 with that computer and program, yet.
I do, however, have issues with what appears to be the V500's inability to manually crop while scanning films. I am scanning film sizes from ViewMaster chips to 6x9 and everything between. The scanner is very hit-or-miss when scanning the ViewMaster reels, even set to scan 6x9 films. It cuts my reels into segments sometimes through the middle of an image. If I isolated a single film chip, the scanner says it can't find it and won't scan.
The scanner also seems to lack any method for manual focusing, creating problems when laying ViewMaster-style reels directly on the glass and when scanning glass mounted slides. If the scanner is capable of manual cropping when scanning film, and/or can be manually focused, I have not found instructions on how to do these things. The Users Guide is disappointingly limited.
Also, scans fail when scanning at extremely high resolution setting, but I don't know if this is an issue with the scanner or my computer.
Great scanner - lousy software
The scanner itself is sleek and quiet. It fits in a small space which is great. It comes with a couple of 'templates' that allow you to load various size photos and slides for scanning.
But the software is awful, at least on the Mac. It took my MacBook Pro a long time to load the installation app, and then the install hung. I finally got it to work, and the resulting application is very clunky and not very intuitive, even for a guy who has a computer engineering degree.
The ultimate bait and switch was the Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 software that came with it. The disk wouldn't even load on my Mac. When I went to the Adobe website, I discovered that they don't even sell 6 any more - they are on Elements 8 now and barely support 6. The online rep basically told me that I was out of luck. So, I ended up buying 8 for $100 because you need photo editing software if you are going to be scanning a lot of shots with your new scanner.
ezrider review
Great machine. Excellant transfers and great for reproducing old odd size black and white negatives. As usual, the instructions are worthless. A lot of trial and error to figure it out.
Incredible Negative Scanning
I purchased this scanner specifically for scnaning of medium format negatives 2.25 x 2.25. I am totally blown away by the quality of the scans. I had previously purchase an HP Scanner for the same negatives, and was severly disappointed in the quality. The Digital ICE technology seemed too good to be true, thus I was skeptical of it, but be assured it does exactly was it says, and it does deliver. I have only scanned a few printed pictures with the scanner, and found the results to be only average.

Light and fast
The scanner is lighter and no bulkier than many laptop computers; it is nearly "portable" in my opinion. Scan qualities are great, and the photo-enhancement tools are very good. Only the interface feels pretentious, which is true for all scanner software I have ever used.
Not like earlier CanoScan Copiers
We have used Canon scanners for 20 years in our business. All worked more or less the same. "Improvements" in this model have about driven us crazy: you cannot set the scanner to 'multi-crop' permanently....you have to preview and rescan every time to make this work. finding the correct output program for the images, in order to edit and save, has also proved problematic. We bought this because we did not want to learn an entirely new system, but in effect we have had to anyway. Maybe this is perfect for you, depending on your needs but for us it has turned into a nightmare.
question
I am about to get a scanner. for me the main use will be related to copy books of visual arts that are colourful and of irregular sizes, so I can have picture and texts trelated each other and show them in my classes. Could some one enlight me regarding what should I buy...thans!Epson Perfection V300 Photo Color Scanner (Black)
Excellent Scanner
I am belong to old school folks and like to save articles from newspaper/magazines or paper documents that I may need to dig into later. Two major things I was looking for when I was researching a scanner: The scanned documents must be easily searchable, and the scanner should have a relatively fast speed. This scanner has very well served my needs. The scanned documents can easily saved as PDF file and I can simply use my Vista Window Explorer's search feature to quickly locate the information that I look for, and the scanning process is fast and quiet. This scanner only uses one cable to hook up to computer, which makes it very easy to use. It also allows thick book scanning.
Canon Scanner
For the price, this scanner works very well for my needs. I basically needed it to scan catalog images and it does a very good job of doing this, with nice details.

Canon LiDE200 Scanner
I purchased this scanner for work to scan documents and invoice price quotes to email. It works great. Scans direct into PDF format for easy emailing. I am also using it to cut down on paper filing. Installation was simple and easy to use. For the price this is a great product.
Great product
This is a great product. Installation was a snap, does an excellent job of scanning and is light weight. In short, just what I was looking for. ONE WORD OF CAUTION, a USB cable comes with the scanner so there is no need to purchase the 10' cable that Amazon indicates "others who purchased this product also purchased" especially since it DOES NOT FIT THIS SCANNER!
Canon Lide 200 vs Umax 3500
I put 3 stars for Mac and Windows 7 compatible due to not being able to evaluate either one of them as I have windows xp home edition. Install went well. It took maybe 15 minutes with a restart and the scanner was up and running. Software was much different than Umax's, but it is still very straight forward. I scanned a few black n white word documents and the front cover of a magazine. The scanned magazine picture looked identical to the original. The black n white documents looked great, just like a photo copy would look like. Best feature I like is the scanner turns itself on/off automatically when in use. The light bulb should last significantly longer than the Umax because of this.
I am very pleased with this scanner. Nothing is perfect, but this scanner is pretty close to perfect.
easy!
I'm only using this for the most basic of tasks...scanning old pictures...and I find it totally easy to use and the pictures come out great! you simply plug it into your computer via USB - no A/C cords! - and its ready to go. great purchase, especially for the price.
Flawed software, unusable
I wanted a simple scanner for light duty jobs. The description of the CanoScan LiDE 200 seemed to fit the bill. The quality of the scan is fine - if you can coax it to operate. There are four buttons on the front for quick copy, scan, pdf, or email. They don't seem to do anything. The software is in the needlessly complex category. Way overdone. The company assumes you have hours to learn something you only use for a couple of minutes. I never could make the scan-to-print (copy) function work. The email function only works with Outlook. One would think a <$100 scanner would feature simplicity. But that concept does not apply. Fortunately, Amazon has a good returns policy. After many frustrating hours, this one is a return.
Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Film/Negative/Photo Scanner (2168B002)
Sleek and fast, this powerful scanner will impress you the very first time you push power. With high-luminance white LED lamps - it's ready to scan immediately, with no warm-up time needed. You'll quickly produce spectacular results, with max. color dpi resolution of 4800 x 9600. Seven easy buttons automate the scanning process, so it's simple to scan, copy and create e-mails and multi-page PDFs. Built-in FARE 3.0 retouching technology helps to enhance your final images. And to save time, you can batch-scan up to twelve 35mm frames or up to four slides - either positives or negatives.

For the price it's terific
Only had it a couple weeks but so far its terrific. Had alot of 35mm slides to scan. Did a great job. Scanned regular photos also and it seems to give the result I wanted.
Takes some time at high very resolution (2400 and up) for the slides but considering what I paid it is well worth the wait. It's very fast at a resolution of 300. Have not been able to start working on the scanned photos in photoshop which will give me much more info on the details of the scan.
The software is pretty good but nothing to write home about. Not as intuitive as it could be.
I would definitely recommend this scanner from what I have seen so far.
Maybe a good scanner, but wasn't what I wanted
Well, I had wanted a scanner that scanned 8x11 negative films, and I thought I had found one, but it only scans a strip about 4 inches wide. It would have been easier if they would post a picture of the top scanning area. So the only one I can find that does this is 600 bux. Ugh.
Easy scan of negatives
I purchased this scanner to fulfil my New Years' resolution to digitalize all my photographs & negatives. This scanner serves both purposes well. I unpacked the equipment and loaded the software on my computer. Within 30 minutes I was loading negative strips into the cartridge and scanning them. Viola. It was that easy. I like that I can load as many as 12 negatives at a time. I also like that I get a preview of the negatives and can select which ones I actually want to scan and save. This saves time because it takes about one minute(ish) per negative to scan. After scanning I have the opportunity to modify, adjust, or change the digital picture file or save it. Saving the files is easy too. You can use the generic name the program provides or change the name. With two labradors supervising my project, I have discovered that a soft cloth and a can of air is helpful to keep hair out of the negative cartridge. I have only scanned one photo (am concentrating on the negatives right now) but it seems very easy too. For someone like me who has multimedia and wants to organize it in digital files, this piece of equipment is the answer.
An Excellent Choice
I made my decision to purchase this scanner based on Consumer Report magazines' recommendation. I have a good 3 in 1 , but this CanoScan outpreforms it by a mile!!! I don't think anyone will regret this purchase.
great scanner!!!!!
A fine scanner for the money, does a great job with positive and negative film, pictures too!!!
scanning speed is slower than desired, but what can You expect from a 200 dollar scanner.

Great Scanner for the Average User
I bought the Epson V30 to scan, restore and save old family photos. We're talking OLD (as far back as 1880's). The Epson V30 has done an excellent job. You can easily play around with different settings involving restoration, lighting and sharpness. Or you can let the scanner do it all with the Auto setting. Personally, I like comparing before and after in one of the manual modes. Sometimes, too much adjustment actually takes away from the photo.
Installation was easy. I selected not to install the optional software that was on the CD and am using just the Epson photo software. It installed quickly and I was soon scanning my first photo. I'm running XP Home SP3.
I'm no photo professional, but for me, the Epson V30 is doing exactly what I wanted at a very reasonable price.
V30 Very Nice
This is an excellent scanner and well worth the money. I am getting very nice results with photos. I'd be surprised if anyone was disappointed with the V30's Images or scan time. Its Very easy to install in Windows 7 64-bit if you just get the latest driver at the Epson site, so don't worry about that. The power and usb are in an odd spot, but that's not really a big deal. I can't rate any of the software that comes with it cause Ive been importing images directly from Photoshop CS2. The results I'm getting are excellent.
Compact and efficient
It would be best to study the different modes of operation before using it as well as getting familiar with the various functions. If you just plow in, you will find it be a little tricky to handle. Also, when scanning pictures, it appears that it automatically saves to a "Pictures" folder. Otherwise, be sure you are familiar with the "SAVE" option to know where to store your scans.
Good quality scanner
I bought this scanner in Singapore 2 wks back based on the recommendations here and elsewhere. It's great - easy to install, scans quickly and reproduces images well (good enough for my needs at least). The only thing I didn't like was that the cover hinges on the long-side of the frame (rather than from the end - the norm for all the other scanners I've ever had). I had to re-arrange my entire desk to fit it in. No problems afterwards.
Just What I Expected!
Inexpensive, very quiet, no warm up time... it's what I've always wanted in a scanner. I've used many Epson scanners before but I needed something that could scan larger paper. It's so easy for me to use and very sleek and beautiful. I cannot get over how great a deal the price is, for something that works just as well as all the other high-end home scanners I've used. I use it for professional work because of the high quality image and the familiar, easy to use interface for manually importing into Photoshop. I'm sure importing with full auto settings works just as well because I didn't need to change much, and I can't wait to use the multiple paper detection capabilities. Also, I will definitely make good use of having a lid that can open flat!

Fujitsu Scan Snap
The Fujitsu S1500 ScanSnap is a terrific pdf scanner. It is easy to set up, has a great feed, and is very fast. Its utility was worth the cost in the first week of ownership.
Small, fast, efficient, quiet...perfect!
I purchased this scanner based on the multiple positive reviews it had. And I fully agree with them!. In a couple of months I managed to transform all my documents, recipes, letters, photos and everything else into digital-easy-to-search files. The single problem I had was a curious moire pattern when scanning glossy photos, that I solved scanning face up rather than face down. Great product!
A little Beast
We do a lot of scanning at my office - mostly black and white full sized architectural drawings on the Savin large format printer/scanner - now we are doing lots of small format color scans and the Savin won't do color so I was using 5 year old technology to scan about 40 pages using the old flatbed scanner and laboriously converting the color images into PDF's. In the middle of this task I said out loud, "there has to be a better way to do this!". A little research on the web and up popped this Fujitsu unit, we ordered it and soon (as in immediately) found it to be a great addition to our electronic office. It works as advertised, it is fast and very easy to set up and use.
Worth every penny!
I recently purchased the ScanSnap S1500 for my law practice. It was a wise investment. After using an HP All-In-One printer/scanner/copier for a few months, and suffering through the slow and unreliable scan function, I decided that it was worth investing in a better machine. The ScanSnap has not disappointed me. It is easy, fast, and really compact. I wish that I had made this purchase months ago!
Short product life cycle
I'm sure this is a fine product, but I would reconsider a purchase. My ScanSnap 5100oex, purchased only 4 years ago to operate under Windows XP, no longer will operate under Windows 7. Fujitsu has indicated its plans not to upgrade its drive software, and this product is not TWAIN compatible.

upgraded from epson 4180 to 4990
We have had an Epson scanner since 2006, recently it just didn't perform like it should, so we bought the equivalent Epson 4990. The scanner is great, but the software that came with it is much to be desired.
It has Presto bizcard which we cannot use on ANY of our computers. We have a Windows 7 PC and 3 Mac's(bizcard only works with windows, only not 7). Also it came with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2, which there is a current version 8.
This is truly an insult. Just beware if you just want to use the scanner it's a great tool, otherwise the software is antiquated.
Perfection realized-4490 Photo
It took less then 10 minutes to get set up with Windows Vista and test this out. My number one reason for buying was for the 35 MM slide archive I have and want to convert my favorites to digital images. I had heard stories about scanners trying to capture the 35MM slide image and my dad who is a photo buff had an HP sometime back and got so dissatisfied he went to an outfit to get slides converted for more then I paid for the EPSON. The result, it blew away all expectations. I was able to digitize easily at 8Meg and pop it onto my plasma 50" screen with amazing results of the Virgin Islands taken 25 years ago. (I actually had to throttle back from 1200 DPI because it produced an 18Meg file.) Colors were rich and detail was crisp. I haven't had a chance to test it with old photos yet but for converting the slides it was worth every dime and more.
Outstanding!
This scanner is outstanding! Quiet operation, incredible quality! I've been scanning negatives that have been lying around for over 20 years. They are scratched and dusty and I really didn't think they would come out well. I was very surprised! The end quality of the scanned negatives is incredible. It is slow - about 15 min for 2 strips of 4 35mm negatives. I would much rather have quality than speed - and this scanner delivers!
It's very easy to use as long as you read the directions. I like the software program - lots of places to make adjustments to customize the results to exactly what you want.
The only complaint I have is that there is no place on the negative strip adapter to accomodate the old 110 narrow negative strips. I will figure a way around that though.
This scanner is well worth the money!!
Disappointed With This Scanner
Pros: Decent document scanning in color or b&w. Glass hasn't fallen into the scanner.
Cons: Poor quality construction. I also get the screeching during scanning as reported by others. Recently it has started making a ratcheting sound as if the belt is slipping on the gears & doesn't scan. A quick "dope slap" frees it and it will then scan.
The software leaves a lot to be desired and is clunky to work with.
I have had a scanner for nearly 20 years, and past (Visioneer) scanners have operated flawlessly. They only got replaced as technology improved or when driver support vanished on an OS upgrade. This one replaced a non-photo scanner as I was planning to scan those old negatives I have laying around. This has only had a little over 3 yrs. of fairly light use and it is trash. I could live with the lousy software, but the poor construction makes it unusable. I expected better quality from Epson, especially in light of its then-$200+ price tag. I am now searching for new scanner...and it won't be an Epson.
Excellent for film users!
After scanning through reviews for the right scanner for me, I finally purchased the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo about six months ago. I use it frequently to scan both 35mm format and medium format. I absolutely love the quality it gives. I scan usually at 1200 dpi in professional mode which takes a bit of extra time but it does not feel unbearably slow. It took me some time to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, scanning is a breeze and even enjoyable. Digital Ice Technology is amazing when your film has scratches or dust from the lens on it. Also, I love the post-processing capability for simple things like contrast, hue, and brightness which saves me steps in Photoshop. This scanner is great for those who would like to experiment in film. Sometimes I will get film developed only for cheap at a local drugstore and then just scan them in, saving me money on having to buy a cd or prints each time.
