I give it an okay for it's cheaper than most other vendors.

However, software-wise, the L130 L230 etc series of this Ncomputing company lags behind quite much.

The system can not boot with a PXE or Etherboot thinclientOS server. You are pretty much tied up to buy their software to be connected to XP, win7 or win2000 2003 20008 etc. They have relatively poor corporation with MS company so a single patch update from MS might disconnect the product and you will have to hack a lot to get it back on.

Overall, I think it is more a zero-client with no software choice flexibility than a true thin-client like wyse V30 which you can use many softwares to boot it.

Plus, you can get this thing dirty cheap from a Chinese vendor like NetStation, without software support though

Good so far
Only used it a few times for a temp worker but it seems to work fine. It's erie having such a small device in place of a PC on your desk but it's nice. Had to call support a couple of times during install but they were very helpful.
Great device
This is a great device that we use instead of a second computer. I like it because it is quiet(no fans or moving parts), uses little electricity, and generates little heat. We also only have only one computer to update and scan. You can use both the host and thin client and neither seems to impact performance. I have used this device about 3 years now. The first one got destroyed by a lightning strike (along with our router & cable modem), so we ordered one from Amazon. It is easy to install and the customer support is great. The only downside is that some videos can be a bit choppy. You also need to be careful about MS updates, but nComputing warns you if they will cause a problem. If you have a small business, this would be great for saving money and networking headaches.
Good for basic software
I wasn't expecting miracles with this product, and I didn't get any. However, for our office, we were looking to reduce the amount of PCs that we have to manage, and this seemed like a good idea.

There were some initial installation problems with NComputing's software and XP Service Pack 3. After some uninstalling and reinstalling a few times, I finally got it working.

This device allows you to run many office applications. Your basic word processor, spreadsheet, web browser, etc. work just fine. However, if you have specialized software that was written for the days for Windows 98, you may have some problems.

We weren't able to reduce the amount of PCs and support work as we had initially thought. But we ended up having a handful of users share a PC for their basic applications. That equates to maybe a 5% reduction of hardware and time saved upgrading specific PCs. May not be worth it to some.

The L230 version adds a USB port. It's said to work with thumb drives only. We tried connecting a card reader and a compact flash card. Our files came across corrupted some times. We hooked up an externally powered page scanner, and it works, albeit much more slowly than when hooked up to the PC directly (as expected). The L230 may be a better choice if you might need to have people use external devices.

Very nice device,
So far I like it very much.

I see it will reduce my HD and CPU fan failures, or any moving part failures in a PC

Absolute Drivel
To label this book as useless would be complimenting it. This is because it is badly written that it will actually hold you back from learning Java.

I wanted to write an application that was a thin client. However if I followed the books definition of a thin client I would not have gotten very far. The book defines an application that is a thin client as: "An application that is faster than a normal application because it is not fat and ugly."

I found countless typos and logical errors. At one point in the book the page numbers actually start counting backwards.

My advice: If you have to read this book make sure you have a punching bag handy because you're going to want to punch something!

Shouldn't advertisement material be free?
For one of the leading company in thin-client programming with Java this is a really bad book. The only thing that is described good enough are the IBM products. This book was a real waste of a lot of money!
It tells you what you already have to know to understand it
The book starts at a level where you already have to know what is coming. Every topic is presented with technical details, but so brief that you can only guess how to use it in a project. I wonder who the book is written for: It is too technical for a manager and not technical enough for a developer.

Baloney! Citrix's turn-key solution
Working at a top 5 technology consulting firm, and seeing the everyday hassels of PC's, Citrix's turn-key solution in the next big thing. I was highly anticpating this book and it did not dissapoint. It came complete with references for other companies that use WinFrame and did a pretty good job of describing the technology at work. (even a novice could understand this technology) Good book!

Forget TURN-KEY! Citrix and Microsoft constantly point the finger at each other when an error occurs.

Metaframe is a neat IDEA, but it just does NOT work!

Good, but influenced by Microsoft
My context is as a student researching Thin Client computing. This book provides excellent coverage of Winframe. However, it is very Microsoft-centric with comments on migrating from "legacy" Unix systems to NT. YMMV.
Excellent reference on Citrix WinFrame technology
As a VAR that implements financial software on NT systems this book served as a real insight and guide into the Citrix methodology for implementing an effective method of accessing centralized data. The book also brought out what it takes to maintain the system for an end user in terms that they can understand - dollars and hours.
Super explanation of how and why one should use WinFrame
Because of this book we were able to make the decision to implement the system easier. After implementation in our college we have used this book as our instructional text both for students and systems operators.
