External hard drive:Linux Thin Client Networks Design and Deployment: A quick guide for System Administrators
Linux Thin Client Networks Design and Deployment: A quick guide for System Administrators
A quick guide for System Administrators Learn to implement the right Linux thin client network for your requirements Evaluate and choose the right hardware and software for your deployment Techniques to intelligently design and set up your thin client network Practical advice on educating users, convincing management, and intelligent use of legacy systems In Detail A thin client network is a client-server architecture where client computers depend primarily on a central server for processing activities. The client machines (thin clients) mainly focus on passing user input to remote services and receiving and displaying the output; thin clients aren't as much about the hardware or software as about the design. This book has all the information you need to easily set up your own Linux thin client network. It will help you evaluate how a thin client network fits into your organization and make informed choices on the hardware and software needed for your deployment, discusses design issues, and guides you with building, configuring, and supporting the network. The author has given thought to the book to create something that is well rounded, and meets the needs of small and large organizations. What you will learn from this book? Chapter 1 gives you a overview of exactly what is a thin client, and the different types that are available. Chapter 2 gives you a sample of multiple types of thin clients. This chapter will help you decide the hardware to deploy. Chapter 3 identifies key areas to review when considering the financial impact of your thin client plan and also discusses hardware acquisition and staffing costs. Chapter 4 addresses what might be the hardest part of your deployment: People. Some people are passionate about their software and others are challenged with any workflow changes. It's important to address them as much as possible before, during, and after deployment. Chapter 5 reviews the network required to run thin clients. Because of the simplicity of the computing deployment, your network too is simplified. Chapter 6 covers the steps necessary to design a server for the number of users in your deployment and the steps to allow thin clients to log into and run a desktop environment. Chapter 7 explores software packages that run on Linux, along with their suitability to run over the network to thin clients. Chapter 8 reviews the process of considering the operating system to deploy on the devices and also covers interaction with USB devices and speakers. Chapter 9 covers three aspects of support: supporting your users, support within your IT staff, and support from software vendors. Approach The book consists of HOW-TOs for all elements of setting up a thin client network, as well as expert advice on decision making, based on the author's experience creating a thin client network for the city of Largo, Florida. Who this book is written for? The book is for System Administrators interested in designing and setting up a Linux thin client network and provides enough knowledge to understand how the technology works, make decisions about deployment, and then implement a stable work environment.

Glosses over the subject
I bought the book b/c I find David Richards' blog fascinating. If you work with thin clients, or even work as any kind of sysadmin, check out his blog:
[...]

But I was really disappointed by the book. I was hoping to get some sort of new insight or at least some tricks to make my ltsp thin client system work better.
Light reading on Thin Clients
The book is an easy read on Thin Client technology, and at times read more like a promotional brochure than a technical book. Despite the book title and the relatively high price tag, there are minimal design and deployment material, mostly guesstimate of how much RAM or disk space is required. If I pick up a book on Thin Client Network Design I expect discussions on the different network topologies, how best to integrate it in a Windows (or Solaris/Unix/Mac) environment. Very few useful recommendations except to say "use a fast gigabyte switch". Using a fast switch isn't network design.

The advice to run scripts to propagate passwords across multiple Linux servers sounds strange, even for a small network. One mistake and you'll spend a week cleaning up NFS permission issues. The only place where the Linux Terminal Server Project was mentioned came at the end of the book - a single link in the Appendix.

The book does provide a good overview of possibilities, and they are interesting possibilities. Unfortunately not enough depth for anyone who is serious about getting their hands dirty.
Must read for someone implementing a Linux thin client network
If you are thinking of implementing a thin client network, you have to read this book. It does not matter your role, either a manager or a technician. It covers pretty much everything. From theory to implementation. Chapter 3 (Analysis of costs) and Chapter 4 (The People Issues) are quite interesting and I did not expect these issues to be covered in this book. So it was quite a nice surprise. Most of the chapters are really good, so I highly recommend this book.
Must read book if you are into Linux Thin Clients
The content that is stored within this book can be described as being highly relevant. I highly recommend this book for those who are new with "thin clients" and the use of open source tools. However, this book can also be an excellent read even for System Administrators who are experienced. Anyone who needs to construct a network of thin clients can benefit greatly from this book. The book offers an overview which is highly detailed when it comes to explaining the components which make up the architecture for the thin client.

In addition to this, Richards spends a lot of time talking about the choices that you have for configuration. The thing that I like about this book is that it offers pointers when it comes to trade offs that you can made for every component choice, as well as providing the explanations in a language that business unit owners can understand. The author of this book also tries hard to bypass the technical jargon that has become so prevalent in most contemporary books on this subject. I should also note that this is very challenging given the nature of this book.

Overall, this book is fairly pleasant to read. It can be a great reference for undergraduates since it provides good hints when it comes to the costs of implementation, especially when compared to the standard architecture which is often PC based. Overall, I would personally recommend this book to those who are highly experienced with thin client networks. The book is written quite well, and the author works hard to explain concepts in detail which are ver difficult to learn.

The Linux Thin Client Networks Design and Deployment show that the thin clients don't involve just hardware and software, but focuses more on the design of infrastructure through the use of the TCO reduction. It deals with the types of thinclients that are used, as well as the financial analysis, the network consideration for the implementation of the server, and the thin client software support and the implementation. Chapter one gives the reader an overview of thin clients, explaining what they are, where they come from, and how the resources can be optimized.
Good start point for managers
Written by David Richards, Linux thin client networks
is a good start point for managers looking for an
info on how to implement thinclient based
architecture in the company's infra-structure.

It shows that thinclients are not about hardware and software but
infrastructure design focusing on TCO reduction.
It goes from overview/types of thinclients, financial analysis,
network considerations to server implementation,
thinclient/user software implementation and support.

Chapter 1 is basically an overview of thinclients
explaining what is a thinclients, a quick 'where did it come from',
how resources/features are optimised and
some misconceptions that are usually asked.

Chapter 2 describes types of thincliens
going from which operating systems are used
and which hardware are used showing options
when deploying thinclients.

Chapter 3 focuses on costs, showing that
adopting thinclients and also using linux,
lower significantly the costs not only on
implementation phase but also on maintenance phase.
ie: a thinclient life cycle is about 10 years; a pc instead
has about 3 years of life cycle.

Chapter 4 covers 'the people issues'.
It's about common issues that people has when using
a thinclient based solution, it goes from an implementation schedule
to the deployment. This chapter also shows the importance
of training if the platform is changing (from windows to linux).

Chapter 5 covers the network,
showing that network is fundamental part of thinclient based
solutions and the author argues that as more bandwidth the company
has more pleasant experience the users will have.

Chapter 6 covers the server side of implementation
with things like, how to choose the server and how to setup a xdmcp connection.

Chapter 7 covers the software deployment
so, how to choose softwares that will work over network,
separated in categories like office, web (browser, im, email),
image, multimedia, databases, software development, and also
shows a bit of how to access other systems like unix consoles,
and windows servers with rdesktop.

Chapter 8 covers the deployment of thiclients;
some key-factors are shown that will allow you
to choose which kind of thinclient, connection methods and
peripheral can be used/fit your needs.

Chapter 9 covers the support platform you have to build;
it is related to chapter 4 and shows that users should be trained;
support trough vnc, preparing the staff and working together with
open source and vendors to improve support.

In conclusion, it is a pleasant reading which was a useful
reference for my undergraduated final course project because it shows
interesting hints regarding implementation costs compared
with a 'tradicional' architecture which is pc based.

This review was written in conjuction with a student mine, Geraldo Netto, who is a System Information undergraduate student.

NComputing L130 Nstation Ultra Thin Client
Like all NComputing access terminals, the new L130 dramatically cuts computing costs by sharing the untapped power of standard PCs. Best of all, IT staff and end users do not need special training because our solutions are easy to manage, eco-friendly and compatible with standard PC applications. And like all of L series, the L130 can use standard Ethernet infrastructure, so that your users can be located as far away from your shared PCs as you need them to be.The new L130 brings enhanced graphics performance (with improved color depth and widescreen support) and a microphone port in a stylish new smaller chassis (just 1 inch tall and 4.5 inches square) that takes absolutely no desktop space at all when mounted to the back of a monitor.Of course, L130 includes VGA support (resolutions up to 1280x1024 or 1440x900 for widescreen), an Ethernet connection, PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, audio output, and power cable connections.

Good so far
Only used it a few times for a temp worker but it seems to work fine. It's erie having such a small device in place of a PC on your desk but it's nice. Had to call support a couple of times during install but they were very helpful.
Great device
This is a great device that we use instead of a second computer. I like it because it is quiet(no fans or moving parts), uses little electricity, and generates little heat. We also only have only one computer to update and scan. You can use both the host and thin client and neither seems to impact performance. I have used this device about 3 years now. The first one got destroyed by a lightning strike (along with our router & cable modem), so we ordered one from Amazon. It is easy to install and the customer support is great. The only downside is that some videos can be a bit choppy. You also need to be careful about MS updates, but nComputing warns you if they will cause a problem. If you have a small business, this would be great for saving money and networking headaches.
Good for basic software
I wasn't expecting miracles with this product, and I didn't get any. However, for our office, we were looking to reduce the amount of PCs that we have to manage, and this seemed like a good idea.

There were some initial installation problems with NComputing's software and XP Service Pack 3. After some uninstalling and reinstalling a few times, I finally got it working.

This device allows you to run many office applications. Your basic word processor, spreadsheet, web browser, etc. work just fine. However, if you have specialized software that was written for the days for Windows 98, you may have some problems.

We weren't able to reduce the amount of PCs and support work as we had initially thought. But we ended up having a handful of users share a PC for their basic applications. That equates to maybe a 5% reduction of hardware and time saved upgrading specific PCs. May not be worth it to some.

The L230 version adds a USB port. It's said to work with thumb drives only. We tried connecting a card reader and a compact flash card. Our files came across corrupted some times. We hooked up an externally powered page scanner, and it works, albeit much more slowly than when hooked up to the PC directly (as expected). The L230 may be a better choice if you might need to have people use external devices.
Easy to Setup
Very nice device,
So far I like it very much.
Easy to setup.

I see it will reduce my HD and CPU fan failures, or any moving part failures in a PC
