No backup software included...
This external hard drive is very easy to hook up. For an inexperienced user, it may not be the type to buy unless...you have some type of backup software all ready installed on your computer. I was a little unsure how the unit backed up information so I called customer support. They were pleasant and walked me through the process of how to transfer files to the external hard drive but he said you had to transfer everything manually (ie..drag and drop files) unless you had some type of backup software. At first I thought I'd have to manually transfer all my important files but them I figured out how to backup my system with the security software I have installed. (Norton 360) So...if you purchase this be prepared to manually transfer files or purchase some type of backup software if you want to backup your whole system. I have not had any problems with the unit and it operates very quietly.

affordable large space disk
I've been using the product for a month or so. It works fine. It is very quiet, you'll never know whether its running or not. The only disappointment is the 2 TB is actually 1.81 TB

Effortless transfer of media
After running disk utility and formatting the WD for OSX it took little over 2.5 hours to move 230 GB of iTunes media, along with the iTunes program so I could free up my hard drive. Opens fast, no issues.

Excellent service from Amazon
The first drive was a complete dud, and what it was able to do before it died completely... was slow. The good news is Amazon's replacement policy is EXCELLENT. Amazon sent a replacement drive by next day and so far it is working great! Two tips for increased speed of the drive for copy/backup use... 1) when you get the drive, perform a "quick" reformat in Windows to give it an 8k allocation unit, 2) disable Windows search indexing on this drive. I have tested it with these changes under both Windows Vista 64 and Windows 7 64... and it works quite well with either the standard Windows copy function or with Teracopy (a 3rd party copy replacement).

Not recognized after first time
This drive was recognized by my computer the first time I plugged it into a USB port -- after that, the drive was not recognized by that computer, or any other computer I tried it on. After the problems I had, I read about this issue with other people who have this external hard drive.

Thankfully, I purchased through Amazon and the return process was painless and no cost to me. I had a refund to my account within two days of the receipt of my return. Love shopping through Amazon!

I have replaced the non-functioning Seagate with a Western Digital that has been working like a champ every time I plug it in.

Single USB not enough
I bought this drive for three reasons:
1. Large capacity in a small form factor,
2. The ability to power/access it from a single USB port,
3. It was on sale at Amazon for under $70.

I started using it on my laptop when it arrived yesterday and was impressed: small, and it worked well with the short standard mini-USB cable. Then last night I plugged it in to my desktop and went to transfer over my 400 GB movie directory. It kept failing after about 10 seconds, at which time Windows 7 would report that I had just attached it. My first thought was it was due to the "sleep" utility, so I downloaded and installed the Free Agent tool from Seagate and set the timeout to Never. Never made no difference. I then used the test tool in the utility software and the it reported a drive failure at about 8%, and said I should contact Seagate for an RMA. All my other small external drives (except for an ancient 30 GB) need a splitter USB cable: one end connects to the drive and the two other ends connect to the PC, using the extra USB port for power. As I had nothing to loose, I gave one of those cables a try - it works fine. So, it appears that the drive needs more power than my PC can provide on a single USB cable.

I'm tempted to send it back, but I'm off on vacation tomorrow and it is a perfect drive for that. I may contact Seagate when I get back - maybe my drive is bad?

CRAP!
Ok so I formatted the disk before i offically "used" it because I kept reading complaints about sleep mode,
ok It was taking forever, so i opted for "quick format"
tried switching documents and was writing at about 18 mb/sec which if it is manufacturing speed would be one of the slowests speeds ever recorded.
Right now I am completely frustrated with Seagate customer service, its horrible and they take their time to respond
I'm currently in the second hour of re-formating my disk
any help would be greatly appreciated

Fast, Reliable, & Sleek External HD
Dear Amazon,

I was looking for a basic external HD that was fast, reliable and sleek.
The Seagate Expansion 500GB was exactly what I was looking for.

Took it out of the box, hooked it up to my computer, and I was good to go.
I encountered the widely mentioned power-standby problem, but it was easily fixed through the format method discussed in previous reviews.

The ONLY thing I would change about the HD is the material of the exterior shell. Perhaps an aluminum or metal casing would provide a more durable feel to the HD, compared to the plastic exterior it currently has.

Oh and it would have been nice if Seagate included a case, or at least a sleeve, with the product.

All in all, if you're looking for an external HD, the Seagate Expansion 500GB will satisfy most of your needs.

Works just fine with my mac. I did not use the installed software. Could be used with a standard micro-USB cable (e.g. http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-Cable-Micro-1-0m-Black/dp/B001QATRCA). Very compact and quite.

Disappointing......
I've been a big fan of the prior WD portable drives, so I was amazed at how far off base they were on this implementation. The bloatware is awful, and if I'd wanted that crap on my drive I'd install it myself. What a big-brother implementation with it already installed and causing problems. Also, what's with the terrible tenuous micro-usb connection? WD, how could you be so wrong???

Great drive - no major problems for me
I bought mine from a local store and started reading the reviews on Amazon before I opened it. I actually delayed opening the package for like two weeks because I thought I might want to take it back due to the bad reviews. However, now that I've been using it for several weeks, I'm pleased as punch. As everyone who has reviewed this drive has noted, there are/were two major flaws: the USB connection and Smartware.

1) USB connection: Western Digital must have started replacing those cables before mine was packaged, because I honestly have never had such a tenacious USB cable. In fact, it's so secure I have to yank pretty hard on the plug to get it out at both ends. I beleive all the frustrated people who complained about theirs, but mine is rock solid.

2) Smartware: Annoying? Yes. A major problem? Not at all. Apparently there are many fixes, but the one I used took all of 15 seconds. It worked on my Vista machine as well as my Windows 7 laptop. It probably works on XP, too.

Control Panel -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM drives
Right-click on WD Virtual CD 1110 USB Device.
Click Disable.

That's it. It hasn't bothered me since and it takes up almost no space on the drive. (Thanks to Moeman32 on the WD community forums for the fix.)

I only gave this drive four stars because it took me a while to find that simple fix, but if you're reading this you won't have the same problem. I can't think of any reason not to get this drive. Enjoy!

special program is very bad..choose another brand...

Great Drive, Great Price
This is a great external hard drive, and I got it at a great price ($85 on a one-day sale from Amazon). I have had no problems with it, and it is solidly built. Also, the drive is very attractive, and I don't mind having it on my desk for people to see.

heavy, bulky, needs external power
I didn't know this needed the external AC power, so I returned it. I also didn't expect it to be so heavy! I exchanged it for a 500 GB hard drive, which seems to be the largest size available in the smaller, more convenient size. The 500 GB didn't need the power cord.

Good speed, best cost
Compatible with Mac and PC which means my professional data (@ office) and personal data can be stored using this desktop hard drive. USB 2.0 has a fairly good speed. Needed one with a 1.5 TB and I am happy I got it at the best price.

Great storage for the price
The unit is small and compact and works well as a backup storage device. It comes with downloadable software for backup management.

Good External Drive
The drive couldn't be easier to install. You plug it into your USB connection and it is immediately ready. I like the fact that the device does not require you to use any particular software. This is especially good since I did not like the backup software you can download from Iomega with this purchase. I installed the software. It worked once and then would not restart. I would have tried harder to make it work, but the features are no better than the Vista backup program so I just use that. The speed is what you would expect through a USB connection, which is alright for my need since I run backups overnight. I did a full system backup of about 100 GB in less than 3 hours. I would have given the device 5 stars if the backup software provided had been better.

Works good
Using this as a backup drive for primary system, copied all data with no problem.

very pleased
Bought this to back up three computers and copy several large files from work. The drive works very well, but be prepared to wait several minutes for large files (10 GB and larger). I do not like the proprietary software that comes installed for backing up files. I prefer to use my own compression software or just back up files directly to the drive. The drive fits in a shirt pocket and is easily carried. Would recommend without hesitation.

Earlier 500GB drive did not last
Amazon sent me a sales pitch about this drive and I figured I'd better inform users of my experience with the earlier 500GB version of this drive. A drive after all needs to last a couple of years and your immediate five star experience right after plugging in is of little value.
I faced a number of issues -
1) The earlier version of this drive did not last - in a few months died the click of death.
2) Accessing Toshiba storage division support web site and entering serial numbers and so on let me know that my drive was no longer under warranty.
3) When I called up their service dept, they said that the web site was only for bare drives and not for packaged drives. At the minimum, their web site should explain this fact. Many people would simply read what the web site says and assume that their warranty has expired.
4) The service guys (a third party incidentally), sent me an email with a form, I filled that out, emailed it back and they emailed me back an RMA. I had to ship the drive at my own cost back to them and they shipped a replacement back to me within two days.
5) When I asked them over email if I could drop off the drive at their location, (they are close to me), they did not answer the email. Found out after calling them that they do no accept drop offs.
6) This is the best part - The drive I shipped to them was black and in spanking new condition (I take very good care of my stuff). The replacement shipped back to me looked like it had been dragged over a dirt road - highly scratched up exterior and the two halves of the plastic have a slight gap to them. The internal drive is also not that quiet. The drive was packaged very well and I'm saving this package since I'd probably have to ship it back to them when it dies again!

In the past 2 - 3 years, I've had good luck with Western Digital drives (both portable and desktop). I'd get one of these instead

Backup for a laptop
I purchased this drive mainly to backup my laptop and it is a good buy for the price and the amount of storage offered. Its compact size makes it easy to take along wherever my laptop goes. I've had good luck with Toshiba and buy most of my electronics with that brand.

usefull
When I sow this hard drive, I liked a lot. However I had some problems installing the setup.exe icon that comes in it. Once I installed, I wanted to make a buck up using the software but did not work, I also installed it in another computer and did not work either. So I just started to transfer data from my computer making copy paste, and it took quite a while!! The software makes computers become very slow.

Worst product ever.
This little hard drive waited until I had transferred all my data onto it (and the amazon return window closed) before promptly failing (after less than 20 uses). I then got to find out that not only does Toshiba make a crappy product, but they have customer service to match. Totally unhelpful (if you can stand to stay on hold for hours at a time), they will allow you the pleasure of paying to ship it to them so they can replace it with the SAME drive within 30-90 days...thanks for being so prompt! I will go out of my way never to use or buy a Toshiba product ever again, and if you're smart you'll do the same.

Great value for money
I am very pleased with this external hard drive. It is compact, easy to use and relatively cheap. Several years ago I bought an Iomega external hard drive (250 MB) and have been very pleased with that one. The new 1 TB version is much smaller and quieter than the old one. Interestinglly, they both cost the same amount; prices of electronics always come down. Great value for the money.

Works great, except for the fatal flaw...
This drive seems to either get five star ratings saying it works great or one star ratings saying it dies and takes all its data with it.

I can vouch for both.

The drive works great; its quiet, fast, plugs in and works as advertised with no fuss.

Mine worked for about a year before it died.

The heart of these external drives is a Seagate Barracuda hard drive (at least mine, a 500gb, was. Iomega could well switch suppliers). Seagate is usually a good brand, but this particular drive shipped with an error in the firmware on the little circuit board that controls the drive. When certain conditions are randomly met it just stops working. Could be after a week, like some people here, or after a year, like me.

Fortunately there is a DIY solution out there on the internet for these drives. Since the controller board just needed to be reset, I was able to get my drive and files back for $9 worth of electronics parts. However, it is pretty technical and not for amateurs or the faint of heart.

I gave it three stars because when it works, it works great at a great price. But Iomega should have released a firmware update when Seagate announced the problem with their drives (Seagate offers an update for its own branded drives). They should also offer to fix bricked drives for free, since faulty manufacturing is responsible.

Lots of storage at a convenient price

Failed After 15 months!!
This drive was great while it worked. I had no problems using it across multiple platforms. This morning the unit stopped working. I took it apart and tested the components, and discovered that it is the Seagate HD inside that failed. Just three months after the warranty expired.

Fortunately I have several layers of redundancy in my backup storage system, so I have all the data on another drive. But a hard drive should definitely last longer than 15 months.

I am never buying a product from Iomega or Seagate again.

Piece of Junk
Had the drive for a month. Put all my stuff on it off of my computer so I could reinstall my entire computer. All files transferred successfully. Used it a couple more time. When I got my PC fixed.....plugged drive in and it was fried. No excuse for this. All of my data, songs, pictures from the last 2 years....gone. $250-$1600 to get the data off of the drive. IOmega will replace it for free since its under warranty.....but they will not help getting the data off.
