Not all Garmins are Good
I've learned that, just because it is a Garmin, it does not necessarily mean that it is a good GPS unit.
My very first Garmin was a handheld Garmin Vista bought way back in 2002. It was HORRIBLE with bad reception, slow processing, a difficult to read screen, etc. I used it for many years for mountain biking but was anxious to replace it with something better.
My next GPS unit was an X-Road (Japanese brand) GPS for my car. This GPS was excellent, with good routing and many useful features. Unfortunately, X-Road is no longer sold or supported in North America.
After some research in 2009, I bought a Garmin 60CSx handheld for mountain biking. This is a wonderful unit and it restored my faith in Garmin. It is everything that the Garmin Vista wasn't; It has excellent reception, fast processing, an easy to read screen, reliable operation, etc.
So when it was time to buy another GPS for my SUV, I did my research and decided on the Garmin Nuvi 255W. You already know all the good features from other reviews but I HATED this unit and eventually returned it to the store because its routing and directions were TERRIBLE. Here are some examples:
1. First day of use. In Portland, Oregon, I listened carefully to the voice directions as I approached a major freeway exchange. I couldn't understand what it wanted me to do. Go right or left? I went right and went on a 10 mile wild goose chase to get back on track.
2. The next day, my wife was in the car as I approached the same exchange and asked her, "Listen carefully to the directions. Which way do you think it is telling us to go?" My wife said, "To the right." I said, "Wrong. We need to go to the left. The directions are totally ambiguous."
3. On the Oregon coast pulling a trailer on the way to Fort Stevens State Park, the unit took us through a residential area with narrow lanes instead of keeping us on the main road which ran parallel. Eventually, it reconnected us to the main road. What was it doing?? My wife and I were laughing at its terrible routing.
4. Later that week in Oregon, the unit wanted us to climb up a narrow, single lane mountain trail instead of taking us on the main road just a mile down the highway. Another crazy suggestion. There were two more similar incidents in Oregon. We tried to play with the routing settings and preferences, but we could not prevent the bad routing and bad directions.
5. In Washington State, three examples of terrible directions that got us totally off track. Then it took us to a restaurant that didn't exist. My wife and I bought a paper map because we no longer trusted the thing.
6. In Vancouver, BC last week, yet another major freeway intersection with ambiguous direction. I had seconds to decide which way the unit wanted me to go. Right, center, or left? It was clearly saying and indicating center, but it didn't feel correct to me. I decided to trust the Garmin. It took me onto the wrong highway and I went on another 10 mile round trip detour to get back on track. I was so mad I was ready to throw the Garmin out the window.
7. One hour later, I was late for an appointment and wanted to quickly stop at a Subway deli before continuing on. It had me turn right, then right again, then right again, then right again. I was going in circles. What was it doing?? It turns out the Subway was on the left side of the main road. The Garmin messed up again. I missed my lunch and just kept going.
That's when I pulled it off the dash and threw it in the glove box. I took it back to the store for a refund the next day after one month of use. I bought the Nuvi 255W to help find my way and to keep me from getting lost. Instead, it got me lost practically every time I used it. I HATE this product.
In its place I bought a Tom Tom XL335SE, which I've now been using for only a week. I bought it because some reviewers claim that it has superior routing relative to the Garmin units. So far I've found no problems with the Tomtom directions and routing. It's everything the Garmin was PLUS it actually seems to come up with sensible routing and easy to understand directions. I'm much happier with the Tomtom.
Great unit for the price
This Nuvi 255w is a great unit at the refurbished price of $89.99, but the first one I received kept freezing up so I returned it for a new one. This 2nd one works good with no problems after 2 weeks. Amazon made it very easy to return the defective one.
The free 2011 map update that it came with took a few hours to download, but wasn't difficult to do. This was a much better alternative to purchasing a $60 map update for my old nuvi 200 that I've had for 5 years. For just $30 more I got the new maps plus a new unit with the better designed display and I will keep the old Nuvi 200 as an extra unit for emergencies.
I definitely recommend this model at such a great price.
Great product
I have never owned a GPS and bought it based on the reviews on Amazon. And I am thrilled that most everyone was right on. It's so easy to use and it made my trip much more relaxing, because I never got lost! This is a great product at a great price.
GPS review
great device I use it every day , although I would have loved to have real time traffic included
Idiot Proof GPS
I give this product 5 stars. This Garmin GPS is just great. Unbelievably easy to use and an incredible bargain around $100. I`ve never used GPS before and had no problem getting this unit up and running in a couple of minutes. Mine is refurbished and no problems. I highly recommend this unit.

Garmin good purchase, fine product
I Have a Garmin GPS already and needed a second one for my wife. This model has the features needed such as lifetime traffic and voiced directions and street names. There are commercials with the free live traffic feature, but they are small and onobtrusive. The screen size and graphics are great and directions are on point. Bluetooth synching works great with my IPhone 4 and older phones too. Free Upgrading of map to 2011 was easy as Garmin has an option to order a CD with a one time new map upgrade for a low shipping charge. The volume is not as loud as on my old Garmin, But loud enough if radio volume is lowered in your car. That's the only con I have so far. Still learning how to use some of the other new features such as loading routes from other sources. Maps on your phone can't compare to a specialized live unit like this. Buy it.
Garmin 265 in real world
Bought this Garmin a month ago mainly on the good reviews it had received and the reasonable price. Took it on a trip to the Bay area, CA. Overall, it performed well. The initial satellite acquisition in a new area takes longer than normal but that's to be expected. Subsequent acquisitions were fast. As far as the routes, except for one hiccup where it kept trying to exit on a non-existent exit on the highway, it performed OK. I noticed though occasionally it went "crazy" going around loops and so forth. Best to re-start the route calculations in those situations. The maps are fairly up to date. The traffic worked OK in one situation but for the most part, it's not the feature I would base my purchase on. For people who rely on reviews, having read dozens of them on various GPS devices, you will not find one with a perfect score. There's no such thing as a perfect GPS at any price with the current state of technology. Even with the "best" one purchased, one should not blindly follow the instructions. Commonsense should be exercised as to where the GPS is sending you. For the money, Garmin 265WT is an adequate unit.
Love it cant drive without it!
Best Gps,nice widescreen so that u can view the street details, never looses signal, calls street by name, accurate, good features to find shopping ,gas, food etc nearby.dont forget to install the free update u get with this gps it expires after a month or so.
Overall Satisfied
Overall I think this is great for the tech challenged, however I really would have liked a REAL manual to be included. I had to ask my friend to find it on-line. Since there isn't a manual provided I'm not really sure all that the device can do...but for getting places it's pretty straight forward. For the price I'm satisfied with what I got.
Garmin GPS 265WT
What a great upgrade from my old Garmin 330, this thing is awesome, handsfree phone use with the bluetooth, and the directions to new places is priceless
Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Great product
I love this GPS. It is very user friendly and it works well. My only complaint is that it sometimes takes forever to search for points of interest that I look up by name. otherwise it is great!
Good GPS
I had a Garmin from my rental car when I was on vacation in California. It was amazing. My only issue is that the speaker is too small on the 260W. If you drive with the windows open you can't hear it and the speaker is pretty much useless. Otherwise it's great.
Garmin GPS
This is an awesome product, I like the fact that I downloaded the Garmin updater and am able to connect GPS and update the software to the latest version available.
false details
The Garmin nuvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator does not have Bluetooth support as stated and it does not have MP3 Player feature as stated and battery life was less than 2 hrs. So, we bought this item thinking it had all the features Amazon stated and we find out from Garmin themselves that this model does not have the features I mentioned above. I assume the letter 'Y' beside a feature means yes, right?
Very disappointed.
lousy product support
Technical support is the pits!!! No matter what time of the day one calls, you receive "due to a high call volume all product support specialists are busy; minimum wait time is 30 minutes; please call back another time; best in the morning."
Garmin nüvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic
Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portableGPS navigators with its nüvi 755T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio--including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks--from the device to your car radio.New to the nüvi 7x5 lineup is Garmin's HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 755T includes free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver. The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Garmin novi 755 GPS, best investment I ever made
I had an upcoming 5 week trip to western and eastern Europe and needed a new GPS. Picked the Novi 755, and got the European chip. Played with it for a month or so to get used to it then on to Germany. In Europe, in town, frequently, you're doing something every 20 or 30 seconds, turning, getting ready to turn, changing lanes, going down some side street, etc. So having audible directions to listen to and a moving map display is a real asset. In the upper left corner is an image with the road lanes in it, indicating which lane you should be in. Traffic being what it is, you can't always be where you need to be, and the non accusatory voice just says recalculating and gives you another route. If you see a quick way to turn around and go back to the original route, she just says recalculating again and gives you the original directions.
With all the side streets and little roads that make up highways and byways in Europe, I can't imagine trying to make the trip we made thought 11 countries just using a map, rather countless maps. Like any map, we found the occasional dead end, or place we were supposed to go that was closed by construction. Default programming is for the fastest as opposed to the shortest routes. You can adjust that if you wish.
The ability to punch up the closest gas station, grocery store or bank is really handy. We used it to find our hotels, restaurants and sightseeing destinations. If the name of the place wasn't listed, then just put in the address.
If I ever go to Europe again, I'll buy another updated chip. That chip slot is available for whatever my needs might be in the future.
A good investment indeed.
Nice upgrade from Nuvi 660
I just received a new Nuvi 755T and have used it for one day. So far, the differences between this unit and my Nuvi 660 that it replaces have been very good.
The biggest differences:
Speed limit indication, automatic scaling based on road speed.
I bought this unit for the traffic feature and the speed limit indication - I have not used the traffic feature extensively yet, but did look at a map of the Twin Cities this morning and it indicated a weekend closure of I-94 through St. Paul - just like it should have.
So far, the only thing that I have not liked is the fact that you can't replace the voice prompt with an alert beep when navigating.
Garmin has units with more features, but I chose this one because I think there is going to be a dramatic increase in features as more and more of them are connected to a central information system and I'm not ready to spend $400 on something that is an interim step.
Power supply / power failures
I have used the Garmin 755T sparingly over the last year and a half. It has numerous problems with failing to retain power. Yes, it is plugged in the vehicle and plugged in via usb port to my computer. The unit dies quickly with battery power and with automotive power. Other times it will not recharge. All connections are firm. My brother has the same unit I bought for him a couple weeks after my purchase. He drives around to construction sites. It also dies, but it appears to be the result of heat in the vehicle. The interior is hot for an hour in the sun, then cooled when he returns with the A/C on. But it fails to work for a half to one day later. I would not recommend this poor quality GPS.
Never owned a GPS before-
I purchased this item for a recent road trip to the Pacific Northwest, San Francisco to Seattle. I did quite a bit of research and found this GPS got wonderful reviews all around.
The Good: worked pretty great on the trip, decent recalculation times and POI's (although it did fail to find a large strip mall close to my home that was built 3-4 years ago, so I'm not sure how recently the maps in this software have been updated). At first I thought that the calculation times were really slow, but it definitely helps if you use the "Near" button at the bottom of the screen to narrow your searches. Using this feature is highly recommended. One feature I definitely appreciated was that one confusing highways, the view switches to snapshot of the highway signs and lanes to better direct you where to go. This only happened twice on the trip, but the switches were well timed and very helpful.
The Bad: There are more than a few places not included in the pre-programmed POI's. Sometimes searches take 3 or more minutes (which doesn't sound like a lot- until you're in a hurry.
The Ugly: I hate the keyboard! The buttons are hard to press and it feels like it takes forever, especially for place names longer than 12 or so letters. Often I press a letter and a completely different letter appears on the screen, necessitating use of the erase button, which is inconveniently placed and hard to press, even though my fingers are small even for a woman's.
Overall, I am satisfied with this product, although if I could go back and choose again, I might make a different choice.
Gets me to the church on time
This product works pretty good. The driving directions are clear and fairly accurate. The directions of use and how to use the features are poor. I like the display showing time of arrival and speed limits, speed signs are a little sparse in this area, but cops and their tickets are not. I have noticed a lag in responce time. Several times it will tell me I have 500 ft before the turn when in reality I'm right at the turn. It seems to be a few seconds behind me, with my driving style a few seconds behind can be too late. If you drive more reasonably there should be no problem. I am a little disappointed with the lack of additional voices and images that are available for Garmin users looks like the others have snatched up most of the voice-overs.
One thing I wish Garmin would do is let you edit the maps. I drive out to Reservations where the maps do not cover, I would like to program in the roads so I can find my way out or back in again. I know another GPS provider allows you to edit.

Flawed basic functionality
I have had this GPS for several years now. Although it comes in handy when traveling to new areas, it is not as useful at home as I had hoped. I mainly got it for the traffic features.
Pros:
Good touch screen response.
Lane assist is good and has been useful.
Cons:
FM transmitter is a complete failure, just don't get this for that feature. The static is so bad, it drove me nuts. Your results may vary.
About 50% of the time, the route does not get built. I do the same thing every morning. Turn this on, pull out of garage, click the series of buttons needed to route it to work, then watch as it just says "Driving on..." and doesn't give directions (actually I don't care about directions, but it doesn't retrieve traffic info). So I repeat (minus pulling out of the garage of course).
On several occasions, the thing just flipped out and rerouted me to an entirely different city, I don't mean made me go out of my way, I mean my destination popped up to a different city. I thought the thing was getting me off the high way to avoid traffic at 5:00 am in the morning, but then it wanted me to go North instead of South toward my dest. Found out it wasn't my dest anymore.
Time remaining to destination is abysmal. Any software engineer could figure out an algorithm to account for side streets. No, this one just stops decrementing when you sit at a light and slows down when you aren't going the speed limit. It doesn't have any kind of forward filtering and prediction to estimate number of stops along the way or anything like that.
The traffic situation is almost ALWAYS like this: Set up the route (twice) when leaving work, drive for 30 minutes on the route while the traffic icon shows green the entire time, hit a dead stop, traffic icon turns red and says 15 minute delay. It never fails. I think 30 minutes is PLENTY of time to download traffic info. My route doesn't change the entire way... I will give them this one if it is NavTeq's traffic system causing the delay (the system is so terrible, it wouldn't surprise me).
The delay due to traffic is always wrong. 1 minute delay can be assumed to be 10. 5 Minutes is assumed to be 25. That's my calculation on average anyway so far.
Now if I weren't using this system for driving, it would be great. I'd give it 5 stars for its touch screen, media player, games, and even for using while walking. I do like the feature of finding your car in a large downtown area if you park somewhere and forget where (has happened to me in Seattle).
Could be good if Power cable and charging craddle aren't broken
We've purchased several GPS Navigators for the last few years and this Garmin brand-new nuvi supposed to be an upgrade after several months of research on Amazon.com.
I got this for my husband's Christmas present, it turns out to be so disappointed...We live in a small town and usually don't use GPS for driving around but for out of town long trips or vacations. After reading several reviews I also ordered a Garmin Friction Car mount to go with the GPS. We received them 1st week of December, 2009. We used this GPS a handfull of times... It always puzzle us why it seems lose battery power so quickly it took us a while to realize the charging cradle as well as power supply cable for the car charger are the problems. It has lose wires somewhere we needed to twit the cord around to make it works and if the road is not smooth it will lose connection again. We are very disappointed as we only have this GPS for few months. We just got back from our 4 weeks summer driving trip, the entire charging system gave up on the 1st day left us cold! This has never happend to any of other GPS we purchased in the past. As the navigation, it seems easy to use but it has been taking us to business or restaurant that were out of bussiness on many occasions!
Garmin or Amazon needs to replace thes defected Garmin parts including car charger and the charging cradle under the warranty. Without power source to charge up this GPS is just piece of junk to us now. Any one have similar experience that offer help or advise to help us would be really appreciated.
No maps for Saudi Arabia :(
No maps for Saudi Arabia ... Very bad because I have to buy map of S.A which will cost the same price as I bought it from here
Great GPS
Great GPS. Arrived in a speaking Spanish mode and had problems changing it to English. Otherwise, awesome unit.
Garmin nuvi 765 is good
Right out of the box the nuvi works well. The large screen is very nice. GO-TO functions are user friendly, more so than our Magellan, and "Points of Interest" are numerous to choose from. We like the ability to set way-points as well. The on-screen keys are a bit close together, but that could just be my fat fingers.
One out of 20 or 30 times that I have asked it to direct me to a destination it was very accurate. Once it wanted to take me down a dirt track.
All-in-all a very good GPS and should serve you well.
Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Amazon.com Product Description This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.Garmin's nüvi 255W improvesupon its 200-series predecessors by adding top-of-the-line features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry-level line. But Garmin is also introducing some significant improvements with this new series, like a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). The 255W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you. The nüvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate. This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information. Old Interface New Interface New -- HotFix™ – aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi. Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services. A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription. FM Traffic With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website. Widescreen -- See More of What's Around The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen Where Am I? On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection.

Garmin GPS
I purchased the Garmin nuvi 205W after reviewing the results of testing by the Good Housekeeping Institute. Purchased it just 2 days before a trip to Seattle. It's one of the very best items I've bought for myself in a long time! It was easy to learn to use, very clear picture, easy to follow. The only slight problem I had is a matter of language, when it says "bear left" & the road goes more straight, I was a little confused. But you know immediately when you've made a wrong turn - the device immediately says "re-calculating" & then gives you instructions on where to turn to get back on track.
It works great! I would recommend it to anyone.
Garmin nuvi 205W Portable GPS Navigator
My first GPS navigator turned out to be perfection. Display is clear, even in direct sunlight through the windshield. Audio is clear - no mistaking what "she" says. We became quite attached to "her" during an extended 15-day road trip, so much so that we named her "Marsha". Her routes were flawless, as were her directions and time calculations. I particularly appreciated that she kept me apprised of currently posted speed limits as well as my own speed. How did I ever travel a highway without her!!
So easy
When our old Garmin quit working, I wasn't looking forward to learning to program another gaget! However, this one is much easier to navigate, has so many more features than the last one, and was about 1/3 the cost. Great little "gaget"!
GSP FOR OTHER COUNTRIES
Do you know if i can upload to this GPS other maps for countries such as Venezuela?. Also i want to know if this equipment comes with spanish language softwares.
Works just fine.
Works just fine as advertised. Seems to be quite accurate too. No issues at all.
Garmin Portable Friction Mount
Keep your nüvi in place with this portable friction mount. It'll keep everything in plain sight when you need it and out of the way when you don't. Place the mount on any stable surface, and adjust the position of your GPS to your liking. The friction mount weighs enough to keep your device put on the dash, even when sudden maneuvers are necessary. It's ideal for states in which the use of windshield suction mounts is illegal. In addition to its convenience, you can quickly place your GPS out of sight, and without leaving any residue on the windshield, both handy for any potential prying eyes. Compatible Garmin Models aera 500, 510, 550, 560 nüvi 1200, 1250, 1260T, 1300, 1350, 1350T, 1370T, 1390T, 1450, 1490T, 1690, 200, 200W, 205, 205W, 250, 250W, 255, 255W, 260, 260W, 265T, 265WT, 270, 275T, 285WT, 350, 360, 370, 465T, 500, 5000, 550, 600, 610, 650, 660, 670, 680, 750, 755T, 760, 765T, 770, 775T, 780, 785T, 850, 855, 880, 885T StreetPilot c510, c530, c550, c580, i2, i3, i5 zūmo 660 What's in the Box Garmin Portable Friction Mount

It's more than I expected.
I read enough reviews about the Garmin Portable Friction Mount to know the general consesus of owners highly approved of it. So I gladly ordered from Amazon.com to replace my windshield mount. It is everything it promised to be, and exceeded my expectations. I fully expected some slippage across the dashboard around tight corners. I even went so far as to hang onto my Garmin 855 on aggressive turns. But then I got courageous enough to just let the Friction Mount do it's job (hold my GPS in place without slipping/tipping)... and it did! So to my surprise I didn't have a single problem or worry anymore. And the dashboard mount is far better than the windshield mount.
I withheld one star simply because I think the unit is slightly overpriced. It is still worth every penny if it helps prevent GPS theft, but for what is essentially a non-slip sandbag with a plastic mount on top... I would like to have paid a little less. No complaints about overall quality whatsoever.
Does not fit all listed devices, had to discard
I bought this mount for my old Garmin Street Pilot, and it was wonderful, far superior to the original vacuum thingy that hung on the windshield. After only a couple of trips, the touch screen on my GPS went crazy and Garmin said there was nothing to do about it --- so I purchased a Nuvi 265WT. It is listed as a device that this works with, but there was no way whatever I could fit it onto the ball mount. The ball is too large. Since this is listed for that device, I don't know what to do to replace it. The way the Nuvi hangs on my windshield is very distracting, as the cord is much closer to me than it was with the Street Pilot. I have a curved dash, so I can't just use anything that sits on a normal dash. Too bad it doesn't fit all the advertised devices, as it is great when it fits.
If you're thinking of buying one, I'd suggest taking your GPS to the store and making sure it fits rather than ordering online.
Definitely not small...
This mount is huge. It will definitely hold any GPS unit (we are using the Garmin Nuvi 1350 4.3") without tipping or sliding.
Garmin Portable Friction Mount
This friction mount works great. No more messing with that stupid windshield suction cup. This thing stays put and holds your garmin in place. Should have bought it sooner.
great
we got this to use in our minivan and it has been great. it doesn't move once on the dash and makes it much more convenient to remove and set up the gps when getting in and out of the vehicle.

Useless Junk
What a disappointment. Useless is the only description I can give it. Base map is useless and hardly any internal storage. No SD slot. It is already on its way back for a refund. This is nothing more than the ultimate Garmin con job to buy maps.
For the Price? Amazing Geocaching Unit
This gps, for the price, is incredible. I bought this unit for less than $100 new on Amazon. The signal strength and satellite acquisition time is awesome and light years ahead of the unit I was using.
While I am very pleased with this purchase please be aware of it's limitations:
It does not have a Electronic Compass or barometric altimeter
It only has 24MB of space, 22MB for TOPO maps, and does not have a SD card slot.
It only comes with a base map which is not as detailed as the picture here may suggest.
This unit is also not considered "Paperless" for Geocaching, and it's on board geocaching feature is rudimentary. This feature does not provide hints and basically only allows you to mark points as 'found' and put them on a calendar. The geocaching feature also holds to the units 500 waypoint max.
However, this can be worked around. Using Custom POI Loader and GSAK with a Garmin POI Maco, you can load about 2-4 thousand geocaching waypoints on this device including the hint, hide type, size, and last found.
Since this device is a Garmin, there are quite a few free topo maps floating around the internet. A quick google search of gpsfiledepo will lend you a topo of almost every state.
While this unit only has 22MB for TOPO maps, I find that for my use that is fine. I live in Oklahoma and geocache mainly in OKC, Tulsa, and Stillwater. This unit can hold the TOPO for all of those cities and the highways between them. When I Geocache somewhere else, I can simply load a new TOPO set from mapsend. It really isn't that much of a hassle.
Overall, this is a great unit. With a little searching around the internet, you can get this unit ready to go with zero cost to you after purchase.
But be aware of it's limitations. Don't buy this unit expecting a detailed basemap or turn by turn directions. If it's what you need, then it's a great buy.
Lot of GPS for the money
Even though lacking some features of more expensive units this is a great device. I use mine for off road exploring and fishing and it functions perfectly for those uses. If you need one for the road try a nuvi series or buy the map software for this one.
Great starter or family GPS
I like this unit as a very nice low cost GPS for nearly all uses a family might have for one. I use it to teach GPS use and geocaching to all ages. It is replacing the eTrex Legends that I bought several years ago. The groups I have used this with is K-12 though older adults. We use these units to do some community mapping.
Garmin eTrex Venture HC
The GPS and base map is pretty lousy... We compare this unit with a Bushnell GPS and was astounded at how innacurate the Garmin was...
Of course this may be corrected with the purchase of the mapset (which cost more then the unit) but this thing is useless with the basemap...
