Great for self-massage but...
Eventually you get tired of it. I used it like mad for about 2 weeks and then it became one more item cluttering my home. Get it only if you are disciplined enough.

I learned about this from a physician and it is very helpful.
I have fibromyalgia and some times the muscles get so tight and this Body Back Buddy can come in real handy. I actually was told about another more simple version of this made by another manufacturer but the more I researched this on Amazon.com I discovered this more versatile Body Back Buddy.
I went to a specialist and she told me about this type of thing and I had never even heard of such a thing before.
It really does help you reach areas that are hard to get at by yourself and allows you to use different ways to apply pressure to muscles. With this you can more easily leverage more pressure by hooking the unit over your shoulder and then pushing the other end away from your body. I think it is pretty ingenious really.
Well worth investing in to help your DIY message or deep tissue massage in hard to reach areas without wearing yourself out. It was designed with the help of chiropractors who wanted more ways to utilize these plastic S bars.
They give you some ideas how to use this effectively. But really the more you experiment with it the more ways you will figure out how to use it for your specific problem muscle areas.
Great for Trigger Point Pain
I have knots in my neck, upper back and scapula area that I just can't get rid off and bought this after reading an article about trigger points...muscles that have been in spasm so long they form knots. I've been diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome and use this every evening or morning after taking a hot bath and it helps to relive the pain temporarily. I have just begun medical treatment and I need other care to deal with the knots, but the Back Buddy has been a great adjunct.
EXCELLENT PRODUCT
This looks like an instrument of torture BUT it's an instrument of well being. Last year, I purchased a book on Acupressure Points. It suggests laying on tennis balls to reach important points in the back. HA HA HA!! RIGHT!

I got more pain from it
I am one of those who got hurt by this product. It happened during the second use. I was very careful and tried to follow the instructions exactly. Also, I am a massage therapist, so I am not ignorant about the spine and the muscles around. Yet, during the first use I found it difficult to get into and out of the device. I thought I just need some time to get used to it. During the second use, intended to intercept a starting low-back problem, I managed to "pop" into much more pain. I barely got off the device and the pain took many days to subside. So, instead of alignment, I got "disaligned". I never dared use the device again. So, even though I see that a lot of people found this product helpful, it is likely dangerous for some. In addition, it's been more than a year since my second, unfortunate try, and I recently noticed that the yellow rubber parts in the middle are cracked all over, even though I have not used the device at all (or could this happen because of lack of use?).
Back ache reliever
This spine-worx really does work. I was extremely frustrated and tired of being in pain. Along with the Back2Life Motion Massager, Lumbar back stretcher and the neck stretcher I have had increasingly help in finally relieving decades of living in pain.
Spine Worx fixed my lower back
This is my best investment to fix my lower back pain. I can feel everything popped back in place just after the first 2 minutes of use. I highly recommend this for people who has lower back pain due to misalignment.
Before you use this, make sure you understand the mechanics of compression and tension, and where you want to apply tension and where you want compression on your spine.

Like a deep massage
Agree with all the positive reviewers. A few minutes laying on the Spine Worx will massage and relax tight muscles. 10 minutes on this and 10 on my inversion table and I feel an inch or 2 taller without the sore back list to one side. Nice before bedtime, makes it easy to get comfortable for a good nights sleep.
Mileage will vary; for me this is the best thing i've ever owned.
I have a subluxation between vertebrae T5 and T6. Also my spine twists very slightly. The muscles between my shoulders become very stiff and unbearably sore whenever I do something to aggravate it... this can be sitting at a desk too long, or sleeping in an awkward position. It's an involuntary response from the muscles that tries to recompensate for something being out of place. I used to have to go to a chiropractor every week because I couldn't deal with the pain.
I decided to give Spine Worx a shot, as if it didn't work for me, the worst case scenario was that I'd be set back half the cost of a chiro visit.
I now no longer ever go to a chiropractor. Every few days when my muscles begin to ache, I spend about 15 minutes on this contraption and I'm completely good to live the next few days of my life with only mild discomfort. What I perceive to be happening is that my spine is reset to ideal position and those muscles that hurt are given their only real chance to truly relax.

Cheaply made
I gave it 2.5 stars only as "benefit of the doubt" since I didn't actually go as far as trying it on myself and so many people have liked it. I deducted the other 2.5 stars because the manual is confusing and when I tried setting it up the unit felt and looked like a rough, cheaply made gadget. The left rotary knob didn't function properly compared to the right one and the push button control didn't work consistently either. This item didn't inspire me with any confidence and I sent it back without trying it further.

Best money I've ever spent. Feels the same as the unit used at physical therapy. Great if your back problem is muscular.
Great Tens Unit
This unit works great. The only problem is that you have to replace the 9 volt battery everyday if you use it on a constant basis.
Unacceptable
The unit came with a scratched screen, and I sent it right back. Case closed.
Where have you been all my life?
I have struggled with back pain for 20 years. I'm not talking a little pain here and there, but pain that has brought me to my knees. I ordered this based upon a friend's recommendation. I must say, it is one of the best things I have ever purchased for myself. I felt immediate relief when I placed the pads on my lower back. The best thing about this is I am a 50+ year old weightlifter who really hits the gym 5 - 6 days a week. The muscle stimulator is also an added bonus when I want to massage some muscle groups after a long workout. I am so very happy I purchased this product. I will order the larger pads in the near future.

Amazing! No, really!
I just recently got zapped by unexpected and excruciating lower back pain. I couldn't figure out what caused it (still haven't). It sat at the base of my spine and seemed to emanate from my hip joint...I was popping Advil like candy, I made a Doctor's appointment--and I thought I'd try these.
I may cancel my doctor's appointment.
The package guarantees immediate relief. I read that & said "Yeah, right" then I put them in my Converse (yes, I know you're saying, "Wearing those all the time are your whole problem!" and you're probably right). And I walked around the house...and my back felt better.

Big Ripoff!
These soles are nearly double the price of Profoot's, but unlike Dr. Scholl's Profoot actually works. Dr. Scholls puts all its money into fancy advertising and making the soles look colorful. Don't be fooled by the gimmicks. There product is little better than insoles that come with your shoes. In fact, these soles are a podiatrist's best friend, because that is where you will end up after wearing these shody soles!
A nothing Insert. GET THE GEL!
I tried a pair of these In my running shoes which are not as comfortable as all trainers. The are light and flat shoes and Uncomfortable as a walking shoe.
SO I tried these because they were the number 1 seller on Amazon. Boy was that a mistake.
THEY ONLY HAVE A TINY CUSHION IN JUST THE HEEL! Which does not help my back or much of anything.
I had to replace them with the gel Inserts and now I can tolerate my running shoes. The gel are the entire length of your foot and so comfortable!
They are worth It for running shoes!
I threw away this set of back pain relief.

These really work!
I "sprained" my lower back really bad about a month ago. I went to the dr. and got the usual round of muscle relaxers and pain pills which were helping a lot but every time I would have to do some yard work it would hurt again. I saw a commercial for these and thought I'd try them. I can't believe the difference it makes. Less than a week after the original injury I could mow my yard without any pain at all. I have tested it by doing things with and without them in my shoes and it is really working to emliminate the pain. I'm not an expert on back pain or remedies for it but these have really helped me.
Convert Your Fashion Sneakers into Walkers!
I walk 6-8 miles per day with my little dog. Since I have extremely narrow heels, I have a terrible time finding shoes that fit.
The only ones I've found that fit me without slipping in the heel are Nike 'fashion' sneakers. The problem is that there is basically no support or cushioning in them and after a couple of miles, my feet and back would ache.
I discovered these insoles at Target and bought more here because the price is better & there's no sales tax.
I like the fact that they are 'cut to fit'. The orthotics that can't be cut don't extend all the way to the end of the shoe and I end up with blisters on the balls of my feet from them.
These last about 4 months if walking daily in them.

Sceptic becomes convinced
Half way through I seriously doubted the book would help, by the end I wondered if it might. The next day the pain was gone. In the last two weeks occasional twinges which I have 'thought through' and they have gone away. Money well spent and what a relief!
read this if you want the CURE to chronic back pain
I wish I could give this book ZERO stars. I want to be as fair as I can be here. I don't like it when people carelessly lambaste someone's work, but the premise of this book is just plain bull. Sarno wants to diagnose just about ever agreed upon condition as the mysterious TMS. Tension Myositis Syndrome is whereby your guilt and/or anger leads your brain to "punish" you via lack of oxygen to certain muscles causing chronic pain. During an exhaustive bout with my own chronic low back pain, I read the book and I searched my own past and tried to convince myself that anger towards my family was causing my pain. The truth is, I really look forward to seeing my family...sure I have some issues with parents and siblings (who doesn't), but my literal addiction to playing sports could never be overpowered by some mysterious guilt or anger or both. I wasted a whole summer on this B.S.
Anyway, I tried several other methods to get back my back. Chiros, prolotherapy, Physical Therapy, Osteopaths, Cortisone shots, Acupuncture and Acupressure. None of them really worked. After "re injuring" my back for about the 25th time in 2 years, I started to lose hope, but that little injury was exactly what I needed. You see, I was basically living with the disability. My world kept getting smaller and smaller as I could do fewer and fewer things. I had accepted it. Before, I was an avid athlete...it was literally a part of everyday for me. My chiro had sort of convinced me that I would not ever be the same. Even though he got me to where I could play golf, I was limited...I had to take a cart, I couldn't hit the ball as far and I was in pain 3 days after playing. He was always saying, "Hey, everybody's got something wrong." This is another way of saying "You are limited".
Somehow, I knew that was wrong...if I got myself into this, why couldn't I get myself out? I refused to accept any limitations. Quite luckily, I stumbled across the cure while searching for a book on golf flexibility. The book is called "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue. He was wounded in Vietnam and told that he'd have hip pain forever...he refused to accept that and found a method that will cure any pain ailment that is musculoskeletal related. The whole concept is that chronic pain comes from posture issues that arise from a lack of proper movement. I was skeptical at first as I have been promised cures about 20 times. The proof for me began about 4 days after beginning the program. I had been unable to walk long distances due to a hip pain for about 3 months. After the first 4 days, I noticed a difference in my gait and in how I stood so I walked 1 mile...no pain. The next day I tried 2 miles...no pain. Then, I noticed that suddenly, I could bend forward without guarding. I hadn't been able to do that in 3 years...I knew I'd found the cure!
A word of warning about the Egoscue method...it's not for excuse makers or pill takers or people that want the easy way out. The exercises are about as simple as can be, however, it takes a commitment and a lifestyle change. You can't do the exercises and then return to your sedentary lifestyle. You gotta move which for me means limiting my TV watching and waking up early to do the exercises. Now, don't get the wrong idea...I work on a computer all day long, however, I make sure I get up and walk and stretch ect. I don't just sit there for hours on end staring at the monitor.
You don't have to be limited anymore...it's up to you!
It works!
I was really skeptic when I first read the book once the approach was radical and did not include any physical therapy. It seemed crazy to me that it could work. It took me sometime to embrace the concept but it worked. After 10 years of daily back pain, I rarely have pain these days. It did for me what several doctors, therapies and medicine could not. Simply incredible.
good book
Healed my chronic low back pain. All in the mind, just amazing how many folks are having surgeries when they should have tried this first. Stress is terrible on the body.
Don't waste your money.
A waste of time and money. The author attributes most pain to a psychological basis.

I must agree with all the other commenters (we can't all be wrong!)....this is a simple, solid approach that is truly making a difference in my life. Esther's book has become a kind of body-bible for me, I refer to it constantly and am incorporating the techniques into every facet of my movement. Coming from a sway back, bad posture and mis-alignment over the course of my life, this is like waking up my body and giving it new life. Especially when I am 'stretch-sitting' I can feel new energy in my lower back.
I will also add that past misalignment - pronated foot etc has lead to a recent bout with chondromalacia (misaligned kneecap) and Esther's glide-walking technique in conjunction with orthotics in my shoe, and some wonderful naturopathic treatment is clearing this up completely. Am I grateful? you bet!
Let me also highly recommend Esther's free online internet class - she is simply a joy, very giving of her knowledge, kind and patient. I am very happy to highly recommend this wonderful book. ....Patricia

When I read of this book in a recent magazine, I immediately thought of my cousin and her chronic back pain. She refuses to have surgery as an alternative for her back pain, and this book sounded like a good approach to a no-nonsense approach to back pain. So I sent it to her as a gift, which earned me "cousin points," and she reports that she's trying the steps and is actually finding some relief. A miracle? Maybe not, but for the price of a paperback, some much needed relief!

This is a beautiful book! I design and deliver training for a living, and am very impressed with the clear and methodical layout of the book. It is filled with clear techniques and valuable information. In addition, the photos are just stunning. They really inspire me to improve my posture. I took the class with Esther and while the techniques are simple, they are not easy. It's a challenge to change the way we move and hold our bodies. However, with persistence, I am starting to see and feel a real difference. Recently a friend told me that I have great posture!
Stretching your posture!
I don't have back pain, but Esther Gokhale's 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back has been transformative for me. And the photos alone turn the book into a work of art ~ worth getting for that alone.
The first time I 'read' Esther Gokhale's book, I just looked at all the pictures, one by one, from the back forwards and from the front through to the end ~ and learned a huge amount about posture and stretching compressed spine & neck vertebrae in the process. Then I started at the beginning, reading the text and hearing about the discoveries Esther Gokhale has made during the years she has spent photographing, describing, analysing, modeling and teaching good posture.
You know what I like best? That you don't have to create special extra time in your life for the Gokhale Method ~ you just incorporate it every time you sit down, stand up, stretch, pick something up, reach for something in a closet, lie down, go to sleep... I've got a long way to go, but even the small amount I've implemented so far has had a profound effect on my posture and on how I feel about myself. Just after I first read through the Gokhale book, an air attendant said to me spontaneously, "Wow, you walk like royalty!" and a friend said "Of course you always look tall, but now you are somehow standing tall in a whole different way..."

This book will change your life
Many of us have chronic body pain of some type or other. I had alway assumed this was normal and just part of living (stress), growing older (more stress), and being in a sedentary occupation. This book challenged these assumptions in my life and presented clear and compelling evidence that just because body muscular-skeletal dysfunction in our culture are common, doesn't mean it's normal. We have, as a culture, forgotten how to use our bodies in our everyday lives. This book has posture concepts that I have never seen anywhere else such as kidney bean shaped feet, J shaped spine (not S shaped), anteverted pelvis, that are clearly illustrated by photos of people in modern traditional cultures, photos of people in western cultures a hundred years ago, and our own pre-school age children. Reading this book is an awakening to how far our culture has strayed and provides hope that we can return to using our bodies in the way they were designed to be so that we can feel better, look better, and live better.

Clear and doable program for back pain
This book was recommended to me by my physical therapist. It is clear and easy to follow, but one must do exactly as it prescribes. It is an every day program, but can, at first increase back pain as it involves the surrounding muscle groups. Taking a day off every once in a while is a good idea if you are elderly (I'm 69).

It seems to work but you have to follow the author's instructions to the "T".
Relief of backpain
I recently discovered I have a bulging disc; my doctor recommends using the McKenzie method exercises for relief. They really work!
Very helpful book for us
We have used this book on several occasions. It has helped us so much that we often recommend it to others.
I bought several copies of this book so that we can lend it to friends and extended family and still have a copy
at home for us in case of a back or neck "emergency". It gives instruction on helpful supplies, exercises and posture pointers to
keep from getting neck and back pain. There are many pictures to help you visualize what to do. We highly recommend this book. Chiropractors have never been helpful to me, but this book certainly has!

Thank you Dr., this changed my life
Quite simply this book has dramatically changed my life for the better. I thought I knew it all so it took me 15 years to actually buy a book about back pain.
There is lots and lots of very helpful advice. The things that made the most difference for me were Deep Relaxation, jogging to get glute muscles, and proper hamstring stretching.
My back is better than it has been in years and my fear is much lower. I learned a lot about my cycles of fear and stress and how that made things worse for me. When my back went out on me a few months ago, just before i bought this book, I basically hit rock bottom mentally. Due to what I have learned, even if my back goes out on me again, it will never be that bad because I have taken control of my emotions. This book filled me with hope and my belief in it has truly helped me.
Lastly, I believe that this book could only be written by someone who had gone through it himself. To the Dr. in case he ever reads this, thank you so much for writing this book.
Saved my life
I was suffering from years of lower back pain. My solution was self medication and rest whenever the pain was too severe to do anything else. Surgery was an option that I was finally seriously considering.
And then my daughter-in-law sent me this book. She said her boss though it was the best book he had ever read on helping people suffering from back pain. Obviously I was very motivated to read it because my pain had lead to a very depressing existence.
It was very refreshing to learn that the author was not just a doctor prescribing his/her remedy. This "story" was by someone who was suffering very much like me. The difference was that he had resources to investigate the actual cause of his problem, medically and mentally and the skills to write about it.
The first half of the book tells his story and what he learned. There are many great anatomical (spelling?) images that made it much more clear what was happening and which muscles influenced that area.
The story and information is so accurate that it would have been stupid to not attempt his methods. It is much like yoga (not that I have any experience) but I can now say that 4 years later, after lots of hard work, I've only had one recurrence of minor back spasms. It requires daily work to make sure I stay stretched and strong in certain areas but NO MORE BACK PAIN.
Sorry for the poor grammar but this book was so helpful I had to write a review.
Practical solution
Excellent book. Just what I needed. The author is a doctor and past back pain sufferer so he is very qualified to write on this subject. The book is very practical.It is a true self help book. I used it in conjunction with weekly physiotherapy ( after seeing a doctor) over a 4 week period to reduce my sciatic pain and difficulty in walking. I could hardly sit. The pain woke me up several times a night. Not any more. It may take me weeks or a month or more to get back to normal. If you follow the wise and compassionate advice in this book -physical emotional nutritional spiritual- and listen, really listen, to your body -all on a daily basis and also seek medical help to diagnose the problem, I believe you stand a good chance of a cure. Small regular progress and patience and trust over weeks or months may be all that is needed to heal this marvellous machine that is our body.

Outstanding, very helpful and lacking in the hubris of certain other health gurus. This is an easy read and a workable program of exercise that leads up to ( in my case ) a better quality of life without scars on my back.

Really Works!
I don't have severe back pain - or even chronic back pain - but I wake up with a kink every now in then that won't go away or I sit funny at work for hours and then have a headache/neckache by the end of the day that spreads. This book has saved me a trip to the chiropractor twice. I don't use it everyday - just when I'm having achy back problems - I flip through it to find the exercises that seem to work the spots that are bothering me and I gently stretch for 15 to 20 minutes - every time I have tried this - I felt better by the next morning - if I still have some aches I work through the routine again that night - and by the second day- totally gone.

Simple, Effective and Sensible Routines - Physiology Teaching Fellow Review
I'm an ex-Physiology Teaching Fellow with a strong background in yoga. I own and have reviewed many books and this particular volume has much to offer. One of the things I most like about it is that it is broken down into 10-25 minute routines that anyone can do. Also, the author who has excellent credentials has simplified routines and covers the use of props which can make it possible for older people or others with limitations to safely practice yoga.
This book is attractively illustrated, concise and can be something you implement right away. While I would have liked to see more detail on the correct performance of some of the poses, there is certainly enough to get you started. The routines are also complementary even though they are listed by body area. This makes sense because the whole body is one unit or system.
It can be very intimidating to start yoga on your own and to put together routines that make sense. It is also fairly easy to get hurt doing things wrong, but this book presents a sane and easy to follow approach. If you have a back problem, I would also pick up Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief. This is THE book on the subject as far as I'm concerned, but the level of detail is higher with less of a broad scope.
Also, if you are serious about doing all the poses correctly and want to get the most benefit from this book, then [[ASIN:1930485042 30 Essential Yoga Poses: For Beginning Students and Their Teachers] would give you more routines beyond this book and more importantly detailed instructions for all the poses including the ones that are used in the book that I am reviewing.
Although I am a fairly advanced yoga practitioner, I use this book regularly. If I had to reduce my review to two words it would be SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE. It has all meat, no fluff and no hype. In addition, the author has excellent credentials. She is the editor-and-chief of FIT and FIT YOGA magazines and has been studying yoga for over 20 years in a variety of traditions. She also studied with some of the top yoga masters and taught in a variety of settings including hospitals.
You can't go wrong with this book and it is reasonably priced. I believe it will also be helpful to those with back problems, but if that is your situation then I think the other book above that I mention is important to own as well. You can't afford to make mistakes with a delicate back. If you are reasonably healthy in this regard, then or are already familiar with yoga then maybe you can get away with just this ONE book.
