OFFICIAL GUIDE TO ANCESTRY .COM
tHIS IS A REFERENCE BOOK TO KEEP RIGHT BESIDWE YOU WHEN YOU ARE WORKING WITH [...]. tHEY HAVE SO MUCH INFO AND YOU NEED HELP TO FOLOOW THE TRAILS. tHIS IS AN EXCELLENT MAP.
A good guide
I have been using Ancestry for a couple of years, but needed some help figuring out how to accomplish certain tasks. This book had the relevant information. I would recommend it to both new and old users of Ancestry.com
Excellent guide to an increasingly useful service
I am of two minds when it comes to an "official guide" to any site on the World Wide Web. First, a website can consist of as many pages as necessary to cover the subject, and there can be as many interconnections between pages as necessary to guide the user. Second, the nature of hyperlinking is such that any properly designed website shouldn't need a guide. It should be so logically organized that navigation is obvious, and it should include its own internal "help" system. At least, that's the theory. In practice, even a site as generally well designed as Ancestry (and it is well designed) can eventually become so large, with so many layers, that it can be daunting even to an experienced genealogical web surfer.

George Morgan, a well-known Florida genealogist, book author, and columnist, began doing research back in the 1960s, when "research" meant many trips to the courthouse and the library and waiting for replies to correspondence. Recent, younger converts to the hobby may find it difficult to imagine such a thing, but that's how it was. Ancestry was one of the earliest multi-database resources to appear online and is now part of the Generations Network, a huge conglomerate (in genealogical terms) that includes nearly a dozen previously separate database sites, plus Family Tree Maker and Ancestry Publishing. The Ancestry site itself includes more than 23,000 databases and transcribed books, with many more being constantly added, and the company has done the online researcher the service of making the templates nearly identical that give access to them. This book follows the obvious logical structure of devoting a chapter to each broad category: Census records, birth/marriage/death, immigration, directories and membership lists, newspaper and periodicals, court records, land, military, PERSI. maps, and local and family histories. Other chapters give advice on starting your first family tree on the site itself (something I don't recommend for reasons of access and lack of backup), on how to work with the many kinds of digitized records at Ancestry (much improved over the early days), using the Learning Center (lots of freebies here), and how to most efficiently spend your money at the Ancestry Store. The text of the book is generally well thought out and the sales pitch (Ancestry itself is the publisher, don't forget) is reasonably subtle.

One thing: Don't forget that Ancestry is not a free research service, it's a business. If you live in a small town far away from large research libraries -- and especially if you need to do research in a far corner of the country -- a subscription is going to be far cheaper than gasoline. Plus, you can work online at any time of the day or night. But also don't forget that in many states the state library makes available a subscription to Ancestry to city and county libraries all around the state, and that anyone with a library card can therefore access any database at Ancestry for free by visiting their local library. (But no, you generally can't logon to the library's access point from home.)

I can recommend this volume to anyone new to the websites it describes, although most of what is available on the site can be discovered simply by "walking around." It would especially make a good auxiliary gift if you're planning on giving someone in your family a gift subscription to Ancestry for Christmas.
Good reference
The book is a good reference to have on hand to clarify a point or search a question.

Deep Ancestry: Inside The Genographic Project
Travel backward through time from today's scattered billions to the handful of early humans who lived in Africa 60,000 years ago and are ancestors to us all. In Deep Ancestry, scientist and National Geographic explorer Spencer Wells shows how tiny genetic changes add up over time into a fascinating story. Using scores of real-life examples, helpful analogies, and detailed diagrams and illustrations, he explains exactly how each and every individual's DNA contributes another piece to the jigsaw puzzle of human history. The book takes readers inside the Genographic Project—the landmark study now assembling the world's largest collection of DNA samples and employing the latest in testing technology and computer analysis to examine hundreds of thousand of genetic profiles from all over the globe—and invites us all to take part.

fascinating book
I read this book the same weekend I read Matthew Hedman's book "The Age of Everything" and Brian Sykes's book "Saxons Vikings, and Celts" on the genetic ancestry of the British Isles. All are interesting reads, but this book was head and shoulders above Sykes's work covering a nearly identical topic. Dr. Wells writes in an engaging manner (he is a good speaker, too) about a complex subject. The book is still a bit too "popular" (read: dumbed down) for my taste but that undoubtedly increases its accessibility to a wider range of readers.
Understanding the Evolution of Mankind
Having joined the Genographic Project I wanted to know more about why it was set up. This book provides those answers in a clear and concise manner. I thoroughly recommend it to anybody who is intested in the movements of mankind and the evolutionof the human species.
Nice book, wish it were a little longer though
"Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project" as the name suggests takes us inside the genographic project in a quest to solve who we are and where we came from. It gives a nice history of the project proving examples of individuals who donated DNA to the project and what scientists were able to learn from them.

Although some of the topics can be a little complex to those who might not have a significant biology background or even those whose last biology class was several years ago, it is perfectly understandable to the layperson and Dr. Wells is able to translate between the technical jargon used by scientists and the common language of the layperson. A glossary in the back of the book, just in case something is not explained fully in the text, is also present. For those of us who might like a little more detail other than that which is provided in the main text, there is a fairly decent sized appendix in the back, which offers details about all the various "families" that scientists can trace via their mutations on the mitochondrial DNA (provided from the mother to all children) as well as the mutations on the Y marker which is passed down from father to son.

It's a nice little book although I wish it was longer.
Have to Agree With Others - Mostly Rehash
Good basic read on DNA tracing, but nothing much new here if you've read other Wells books or have watched the National Geographic programs on the Genome Project.
"Our Roots: Where We Originated" "Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project" by Spencer Wells. National Geographic, Washingt
"Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project" by Spencer Wells. National Geographic, Washington, DC. 2006. ISBN 10: 0-7922-6215-8, HC 248 pgs., Index 6 pgs., Illustrations.

A well-written, largely original dissertation on discovering and documenting the origin and migrations of earliest Man (Homo sapiens) utilizing mutation points in the genome as relative, fixed-time events and categorized as haplogroups (ancestral clans).

A previously published researcher, Wells obtained Ph.D. (Harvard) & studied under Luca Cavalli-Sforza (Stanford), population geneticist. Wells' genetic studies used Y chromosomal DNA for paternal and mt DNA (Mitochrondrial) for maternal linkages. For exposition in this book, Wells performed computational analyses of c. 10,000 participants from diverse parts of the world. Based on assumption that mutations are rare, he and co-workers studied both mt DNA and Y chromosomes for evidence of mutation sites, frequencies, and they were, thereby, able to develop maps of earliest haplogroups (ancestral clans). Illustrations show his mapped and inferred migratory paths for ancestral "Eve" and "Adam" using mt-DNA and Y-Chromosome respectively. Improved data necessitates use of more subjects, i.e. 100,000.

This book is written for a large general audience in mind and fortunately is not overly stuffed with scientific jargon. The many illustrations and maps are invaluable. This study is part of the 5-year, 40-million-dollar research Genographic Project launched in April 2005 (completing in 2010), using cheek swab specimens contributed by voluntary public participants who purchase kits to obtain cheek swab samples (cost c. $100) and each will be provided haplogroup ID. Works with Windows 7
This item does work with Windows 7. Here is the issue....people think it doesn't work with windows 7 because when you are installing, it looks like the program freezes but it doesn't. Leave it alone and it takes up to 10 minutes or more to install. While it is installing, it will look like it froze but it doesn't. I have been using it on my Windows 7 computer for a few months now and I love this family tree program. It has made my searches so much easier.
So far....NO good.
I ordered this product directly from [...] about 6 months ago. I have tried a number of times to install it, but each time I get the "blue screen of death". I am terrified I am going to have something terrible happen to my computer or my FTM files...both of which are backed up...but still. If I can ever get this program installed, I will let you know how it works out for me. But so far....NO GOOD!
Does the Job
I am brand new to genealogy and Family Tree Maker makes it simple. It is very user friendly except I don't like the way it saves. It saves a new file every time instead of overwriting the old. Without using "help" or a tutorial I figured out how to use it. I also like the way it links up with [...] (don't like paying for that of course). Although I haven't begun to tap into what the program can do, I love it so far.
Some Good, Some Bad, expensive
I have been using Family Tree Maker for many years and six different versions. I think I started with version 4. My old version did not work when I got a new computer with Windows 7. I had to configure the program for 32 bit access on Windows 7 because it is unusable on 64 bit.

This version is constantly on line while you are working, and rapidly makes connections to documents and family trees. I like the documents, especially the census records, but most of the family trees are poorly documented and contain a lot of bad information, often names added by guesswork or wishful thinking. Web access is very expensive. Ancestry wants $20 to $25 a month for domestic membership and $25 to $30 for worldwide membership, depending on whether you purchase by the month or by the year.

If you are going to do any publications, it is almost impossible to get more than one page at a time in any format except the default format. I gave up after many attempts to create a 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 book instead of the default 8 1/2 by 11. It would just change my documents back.

Most family trees have cousin marriages. I had a great deal of difficulty linking a person who had two paths from my ancestry. I finally got it to more or less work after about twenty attempts. Only one of the relationships is reported, and not necessarily the one I wanted. I wanted umpteenth great grandmother, got umpteenth great aunt.

I will probably switch to my iMac and buy Reunion.
Love it
I have used Family Tree Family for 14 years and have just upgrade to this version. It's wonderful!

Don't expect to date photos with this alone
Why can't she provide the approximate dates for the photos presented in this book? Overall, this book is a good introduction to the subject. However, if an unknown person in one of your photos is wearing a dress nearly identical to one shown in the book, you'll still have to try to date it yourself. Obviously, many things need to be considered when dating photos (clothing, hairstyle, age of the subject, etc), but just as a reference, it would be nice to know when a photo was taken. This book gives an overview of the different photographic media (tintypes, carte de viste, etc) as well as the types of photos you might have in your collection (weddings, military, etc). She gives a very brief description of changes in fashion over time, but this really isn't enough to date any particular photograph.
Uncovering Your Ancestty through Family Photographs
This was a very interesting and informative book that has practical guides to dating and identifying old photographs. The information was helpful for a class that I taught at a genealogy conference as well as for my personal use.
Fabulous info for identifying photos~
This is a great book filled w/ marvelous tips on identifying the year of the photos. Especially enjoyed the info on clothes & time periods & photography periods. Very succinct & helpful.
Good advise on tracking and dating
This beautifully designed; well illustrated book provides good advice for researching unidentified family photographs from Daguerreotypes to more recent times. The advice includes how to place the people in your family history and the case studies with their photographs including with each chapter are particularly valuable in that process. I primarily bought the book for tips on dating photographs and Taylor provides good background material, and links to more detailed information. There are some useful common sense tips such as looking at included flags, presidential photos, or whether power lines are included. I would have liked more here, for example when looking at fashions there are just 5 pages for both men and women from 1840-1900 (the only period covered). One deficiency was just one paragraph mentioning real photo postcards .. where the paper they are printed on can included valuable identifying marks to date within a few years.
Uncovering Your Ancestry through Family Photographs
Great service from the vendor. My book arrived in excellent condtion. Maureen Taylor is the expert on vintage or "old" photographs and this book is a delight. It gave me great ideas of how to indentify some of my mystery photos. She always offers excellent research advice. The chapter on fashion and time periods, with a chart, is very helpful.

Family Tree Maker 2010-still getting used to it
After using the genealogy tree online for a few months, I purchased this product. I wanted to keep the information that I only had online on my hard drive in a convenient format. Unfortunately, I discovered that not all tree software is the same. I had a problem automatically transferring all of the data from my online tree to FTM and have had to do much of it by hand. The software is less intuitive to me than the online tree, but I was used to using the one on the website. I'm hoping that the more I use FTM, the more advantages I will discover to having it and the more I will use it.
Family Tree Maker Essential
This version is very hard to use. I have an older version and I am going to keep it so I can actually accomplish something. Every step I want to take, I end up getting the instruction booklet out and it's not all that useful. Nothing seems to flow smoothly; I hunt all over the screen for what I want to try to do next.
Family Tree Maker 2010
I purchased this item in order to update my older version of this program. Doing so means adapting to the new program as well as correcting many errors that occurred during the transfer of data from the old program to the new one; very time-consuming. I like that the new program shows my relationship to my ancestors and includes maps of where they lived. (I haven't figured it all out yet so there may be other nice features I haven't found yet.) I had nearly 20,000 names in my old program (which was very old). With the new program, everyone shows up about 6 tmes, so I have to merge all these entries.

The program comes with a one month's free subscription to [...] which I have not signed up for as I don't think I would use it very much right now; assume I can do this later on after I've completed all this merging.

One thing that upset me was that, for some reason, this item could not be shipped to my PO Box which I use as my legal address. Mail is not delivered to my home and this is the first time Amazon wouldn't ship to my PO Box. I don't understand this as the item came via the U.S. post office and not via UPS. I had it shipped to a family member who was going to install the program for me anyway. I hope this doesn't happen again as it will affect my ability to order from Amazon.

Family tree maker 2010
Lost of functionality from earlier versions is too much. I went back to the 2006 version.
Family Tree Maker - Best Ever!
Lots of new ideas as to how the improvements made to this genealogy program will make your experience rewarding and fun! But it! Best program on the market, at least from my viewpoint.

Great Book!
Great book on online genealogy. I recommend it to anyone interested in this topic. Good tips and links also.
great book
Started researching family history a couple years ago, but was't making much headway. This book really has helped me get going and is improving my results. I purchased the book along with the Family tree maker 2010 software which is a much better than the previous editions. A great book to buy.
Great resourse book
This was my first book on Genealogy I purchased and it has been a big help, after I had started my family tree. It's packed with great information and on-line resourses and also, some samples of family tree research. A must have for your Genealogy library.
A GREAT STARTING POINT
THIS HANDBOOK IS A GREAT ASSET TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN GENEALOGY (AS I AM). IN FACT, I PURCHASED 2 COPIES; ONE FOR ME AND ONE FOR MY SISTER. NOW WE BOTH CAN BURN UP THE NET!
Best book I have seen on genealogy
I am a librarian and have bought a lot of books on genealogy but this one is fantastic. It is loaded with websites and ideas and to have it all in one place is just staggering. The author did a great job.

Great book!
I got this book for my mother in law. She is currently working in the family geneaology and found it very helpful.
save your money
This book was a total let down. Too much material is glossed over. This is probably a great guide for a kid doing a school project--but it just doesn't cover as much material as other books at the same price. For example it states that you can find info from genealogical societies , research centers and libraries. No societies or libraries are then listed right there in the book. A paltry few societies are listed in the back. I just finished The genealogy sourcebook by Sharon Debarto Carmack--which is absolutely fabulous!!! Maybe if I read the boks in the reverse order I would have a higher opinion of the Reader's digest version. On second thought--probably not!!!!!
Keys for opening doors
This books is a guide to helping you figure out your past. It gives you information on how to open up doors to your past. It also gives you the web sites that can be use. It show you how to start your genealogy and where to look. Its a guide on helping you uncover the past.
A big disappointment
I was disappointed to find that this book tells you how to apply the information you have on the web so that others who are looking have it. I am cautious about placing personal information on the web because you don't know who might collect it and then use it to steal your identity or create problems in other areas of your private life. I was looking for ways to go the the national data banks to find out information and I felt this book did not fill that need. Jean Schweer
excellent launching point for your genealogical research
I'm just getting started with my Genealogical research, and after feeling a bit overwhelmed with the possibilities, I bought a couple of books to help me develop a "roadmap."

Given the conciseness of this text and the beautiful graphic design and layout, I was expecting this to be shorter on substance than my other (much lengthier) book, "How to Do Everything with Your Genealogy." However, the old family photographs and pictures of census records and immigration documents are inspiring, while the mini-case studies help put the descriptive text in context. The eight concise chapters seem to cover the essential range of topics, including interviewing and collection techniques, archiving, creating family trees, using the internet as a tool, and planning a genealogy research trip. Family history research is not rocket science, and while much of what is described is common sense, this book focuses on pointing out key internet and library resources and recommending methods for interviewing as well as making use of the experience of naturally helpful librarians and archivists.

I was particularly impressed by the clarity and relevance of the chapter on internet searches, which assumes no previous background and probably well accommodates even the largely senior demographic of family historians. Relevant sub-topics include a conceptual overview of how email works, basic netiquette, and pointers to helpful online resources. Appropriately, computer technology is a dominant theme throughout the book, and the author makes particular note that with modern technology, genealogical research is a whole lot less tedious than it used to be. One example of a good idea I hadn't thought of, is bringing a digital camera on research trips to take snapshots of archival documents.

I'm sure I'll come back to this book as a "reference" during various stages of my search, but that didn't stop me from reading this from cover to cover.

Deep Ancestry: The Landmark DNA Quest to Decipher Our Distant Past
