Really enjoyed all aspects of this book. Very useful in determining how much food to pack, how to analyze what sort of nutrition you want to bring and good recipes for making good, nutritious food on the trail.

NOLS Cookery
This is a great resource! I love the section where they tell you what typical camping items can be used to measure a tablespoon, cup etc. Also love the section where they tell you how to plan for a trip with ideas for how many pounds per person to take into the mountains. It couldn't be easier, thanks NOLS!

Best backpacking recipes
Most people think that food in the back country is at best mediocre and only good because you are hungry. GREAT play kitchen!
My son got this kitchen at about 18months, he's almost two and he has played with it every single day! He LOVES to pretend to cook and it's very durable since he's not always gentle with it! And as a bonus it's attractive and the perfect size with lots of accessories!

Excellent long lasting toy for girls and boys
We got this as a gift for our daughter for Christmas when she was 2. She is now almost 6 and still plays with it. Her younger brother (now 2) has been playing with it from the moment he could stand up. It is small, and fits nicely in our kitchen. The wood and light green matches our decor. And, we love how it's nontoxic so we didn't worry about "pretend" eating. This is definitely worth the money and has provided hours of creative play.

My toddler loves this!
My 15 month old son has been playing with this on a daily basis. He loves pretending to cook something and brings it right over to us to test out. I can see that as he gets a bit taller he may outgrow it quickly, but his two older brothers who are 3 and 6 have also found a way to play with it too.

Great kitchen!
My 19 month old daughter has been playing with this kitchen everyday since receiving it a couple of months ago. I love that it came with a bunch of food accessories to get you started. It is light-weight, so does slide around on my bamboo floors a bit. That could easily be fixed with some non-skid pads on the bottom of the kitchen. Or I could put it on a rug. So far, I have been very happy with this kitchen, and so has my daughter.

my daughter loves this kitchen
I have a 2 year old and she loves this kitchen. I love it because it is not some giant plastic monstrosity and it is nice and tiny. Don't be fooled by the picture though because it is really tiny, look at some of the pictures that other people have submitted so you get a better idea size wise. Depending on my daughter and her interests I might upgrade to a larger wooden kitchen in the future, but it really is a perfect fit for us right now.

Belching Dragon, Hidden Spatula
The greatest shaolin kung fu movie ever made! The ultimate Chinese movie! Grotesque, irreverent, vulgar, and profound in its disrespect for all things sancti-money-fied. A candidate for the funniest film I've ever watched. The humor is doubled by the chop suey English of the subtitles, and if you happen to speak any dialect of Chinese, make that tripled!

"The God of Cookery" is a parody of a genre that's already silly in its own right, the Chinese version of magic realism best known to Americans from the film 'Crouching Dragon, Hidden Tiger'. Director Stephen Chaiu (given as Chow in the subtitles, aptly enough) is also the star, a nasty cocky restaurant tycoon who is ousted by "The Triad" and who fights his way back with the help of allies including street thugs, a disfigured maiden, and a Buddhist abbot. Lots of cutlery flashing in mid-air, scatological humor, and some vivid impressions of the actual culinary artistry of Hong Kong.

You'll have to see it to believe it.

My favorite Stephen Chow comedy
After this, I think Stephen Chow tried to broaden the appeal of his movies to Western audiences (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle), but IMHO, lost some of the quirky charm in the translation. I've been a Stephen Chow fan for years, ever since my aunt foisted an unlabeled VHS tape on me containing "Hail the Judge". I eventually tracked down most of his movies (on cheap VCDs) through the magic of the Internet. They are a bit formulaic, with him playing an initially heartless S.O.B. who gets into trouble and has to crawl his way back to the top while learning some humanity, but "God of Cookery" absolutely nails it, and I was laughing hysterically most of the way through. Of course it's funnier in Chinese, and if you're familiar with all the genres being spoofed (Iron Chef, wuxia (superhero swordsmen) serials, gangster movies, supernatural comedy/drama, etc.)

Great performances all around. Stephen Chow's arrogant chef manages to be corrupt and greedy without being completely repulsive, so his eventual turnaround is believable. Karen Mok is just as good as playing a disfigured woman who runs a streetside noodle stand and a small gang, who help him when he hits bottom. Everyone is insane, down to the woman who judges the final cook-off at the climax of the movie. The discussion of the merits of the "folding chair" as a martial arts weapon! Shaolin internal energy methods applied to cooking! "Explosive Pissing Beef Balls"! And much much more, all carried off with tremendous style and energy.

I love it!

totally absurd
Had to buy this movie after seeing it at a friend's a while ago. Absolutely ridiculous, and you'll appreciate it more if you're familiar with Iron Chef. The English subtitles are pretty bad but that only adds to the appeal.

Hilarious. Need I say more?
Me and my friends stumbled upon this movie, and watched it without really knowing anything about it. We were all pleasantly surprised to discover that it is one of the most hilarious movies ever written. Many people say you have to understand Chinese culture to understand this movie, but I don't know much about Chinese culture and still found myself laughing throughout the enitre movie. While I have to admit, the subtitles aren't always up to par (they repeatedly use the word "satin" instead of "Satan" and there was one sentence that was so bad I had no clue what it was supposed to mean), but that doesn't take away from the glory that is this movie! If you want to see a really fun spoof that actually will make you laugh out loud, I highly recommend this!

A uniquely funny and poignant film.
So unique that I cannot classify it.
Both a comedy and a tragedy
and so much more.
And amazingly beautiful to look at.
I would have appreciated it more,
if that is possible,
had I understood more of Chinese
philosophy and culture.

The English subtitles,
which were necessary for me,
were very poorly done.
The dialog is probably
far superior than that of
the subtitles unless
the only mistakes
were spelling and grammar.
A film of this quality,
a true classic, deserves to
be translated well for
English readers.

Baking and cooking from the 1830's
Miss Leslie's book was originally written in the 1830's, a few years after that famous work by Mrs Beaton. Miss Leslie's work is excellent. The recipes are very precise in terms of ingredients (there is even a very handy reference section to let you know how many cups in a gill and how many table spoons in a cup etc.

What I like best about this book is the advice sections - we have lost much of the art of baking and cooking simply because our ovens are too easy - Miss Leslie has a great number of tips and tricks for doing things - baking large biscuits in earthenware for instance is excellent - as well as little tips like making sure you score a cake's icing with a small sharp knife before cutting to ensure it doesn't crack.

there are some ingredients which were clearly common in this age which are not nearly so well used now, like rose-water. But there are some ingredients I still don't know - Pearl-ash for instance - and although I know isginglass I have never used it.

Still this is a truly lovely little book to have on your shelf - and another especially nice book to give this christmas to someone you love.

Like seeing an old friend...
I'm so happy to see that this book is still available. Years ago, when they first came out, I bought a Presto Fry Baby. My son & I were living alone then and we used it all the time. This book provided great ideas for us to experiment with. Through the years I lost track of both the fryer and the book. Today I bough a new Fry Daddy. My next purchase will be this book. Mabel Hoffman has never let me down in any of her books!

A Must Have Book
For someone just getting into deep frying, this is a must have book. Wonderful photos and great instructions. Most recipes are fairly easy using ingredients we usually have on hand. Well worth the reasonable price.

A must for every home
I have lost 10 lbs so far with coconut milk. Folks will tell you it is very fatening but they are good fats and you actually loose weight and it helps to prevent alot of health problems such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and more. It strenghtens your immune system. It's also a very refreshing delicous drink. The recipe for coconut milk is quick and easy. When I feel a cold coming on it knocks it out in a couple days. This book is a must for all homes. You will not regret this purchase. I can't say enough good about this book!

I love coconut oil
I began to hear good things about coconut oil and I decided to do my presentation on it in my nutrition class. I bought this book and found out more than I had already learned from friends about the benefits of coconut oil. This book was easy to follow and understand. I am a believer! I now use the oil for almost everything and have my friends using it for many things also. Read the book and find out it's benefits then try it for yourself. You too will become a believer! My friend has the book "Coconut Oil Cures" which is from the same author. I just began reading it. Both the books have different things about coconut oil and it is very interesting.

Excellent book - A must read!
a wonderful book with great insight on coconut oil and its benefits.
I have been dealing with candida issues and have stumbled upon coconut oil to help me with this issue. The book has extensive info on various diseases that are common today and labeled as "incurable", but Bruce Fife shows that many can be corrected with this amazing oil. I have added it to my diet, cooking, on toast, in smoothies for a preventative and keeping me healthy. I even drink it by the tablespoon for a more therapeutic approach to my candida and it working amazing and right away. I also have introduced Kefir to my diet, which I make everyday to add 20 to 30 different strain of pro-biotic in the gut.
This has been the best approach to dealing with candida and most successful so far. Don't even think about cleansing yourself of it; candida is part of your gut's bacteria for a good healthy body. All you want to do when dealing with an overgrowth is bring back your body into balance and promote good bacteria.
I also like the section on recipes to use coconut oil instead of other oils, one is a mayonnaise which is just great and easy to make.

Dr. Bruce Fife's Coconut Oil Miracle, in combination with Dr. Carolyn Dean's The Magnesium Miracle [which I've also reviewed], helped me begin working my way through the labyrinths around human body maintenance. I don't agree with every concept espoused in these books, but, in tandem, they have gone a great distance in devising an owner's manual for prime operation of my Homo sapiens machine. I've voraciously read and digested every word in these two books; I plan to read them again and use them for references. I like having them in my KINDLE, so they are available everywhere I wander, even in my own home. There are many similar books and products on these subjects which I plan to explore.

The combined benefit of information in these two books and use of related products have likely saved my life, by dramatically reducing several serious debilitations. Unfortunately I still have a way to go to turn around a severe magnesium deficiency. After a serious liver infection which nearly took my life at nine-years-old, a doctor [a true healer I trust] said that I might live to be 40 if I'm very lucky, and avoid regularly pushing myself too far beyond normal reserves. I'm currently 62 years old.

I hope this review will help others who might be experiencing similar aging difficulties that I have. Of course it's probably obvious that I'm not a medical professional; my opinions in this review and others are just that, my personal opinions from experience with these products and books.

I've not given too many details about the vital information in this book. Other reviews have expertly accomplished that; I've contributed my unique perspective.

NOTE: If you have a severe magnesium deficiency like I do, it's important to know that sometimes coconut products have large amounts of potassium in them, possibly due to potash fertilizers as noted in Dr. Dean's book. Also, according to that book a greater amount of potassium than magnesium in the body can overpower the magnesium. Due to that fact, I limit my use of this oil more than I'd like to, for the time being. Even so, I use it frequently, almost exclusively for cooking, especially in frying meats, because the fatty acids are vital to me... and food tastes yummy cooked in cold pressed, virgin coconut oil. As shown in my review, I spray many foods [and sometimes drinking water] with Magnesium Oil 8 fl oz (237 ml) Spray to help counterbalance other minerals in foods.

"Old Friend" in the Kitchen
I used Beard's American Cooking, cook book in the 80's. I lost my copy, with lots of annotations, somewhere in the 5 moves, I made during the following years. I bought this one, since it was like a "old friend" in the kitchen. It is, once again, getting it's share of scribbles and changes. It is one of those you can pick up, decide on a menu for the family, and almost be sure the ingredients are on hand.An excellent source of ideas and items to please the most discriminating pallet. I highly recommend this book or anyone's kitchen.

In the spirit of reduce, reuse and recycle, I decided to buy my daughter a used cookbook (she had asked for mine when I die and I didn't want her to have to wait a long time!) She loved it.

The classics
This books has a ton of classic american recipes. If you are a novice like me who cooks on occation, this is probably the only cookbook you will ever need.

I Trust These Recipes Completely
This cookbook has become the one I turn to for any American dish I want to recreate from childhood. American cooking is so varied that trying to recreate a dish from childhood can be difficult with all the variations out there. James Beard doesn't always produce what I remember a dish tasting like, of course (I'm from the Deep South), but his version is always good. I trust his taste much more than Joy of Cooking's, especially since he has firm opinions and doesn't leave you guessing with multiple iterations like in Joy. His rendition of the following are excellent and well loved at my house: pot roast, corn bread (make with Bob's medium grind cornmeal and buttermilk), chili con carne, baked ham, vichyssoise, deviled eggs, and his mother's cream biscuits. You'll probably end up customizing the recipes to suit your taste, but the originals are never disappointing and usually amazing. The short histories of each dish and foodstuff are engrossing as well.
