Nice Water Kettle

to make this review short & concise - this is a great product. heats up water instantaneously (faster than a stove-top kettle). my wife uses it more than 5 times a day to heat up water for our baby, to make coffee, and other uses.

No warmer on pot
I bought this tea pot 1 month ago and I have not been happy with it. The biggest reason that I bought a tea pot is becasue I drink a lot of tea and I hate to have to get up an leave my desk to make another cup of tea. I thought that I would have a whole pot of hot water by my desk. Alas, this pot does not keep the water hot like a coffee pot! By the time I finish drinking my first cup and go for a refill the water is already luke warm and cold by the third cup :-(

I should have just bought a coffee pot becasue it keeps the water hot for a couple hours.

Perfect for heating water for French Press Coffee
I am a coffee nut and wanted to get something to heat water that would compliment our French Press Coffee experience. This is a perfect appliance as it heats the filtered water we put into it and makes the best coffee ever in our French Press Maker. We don't get any plastic taste whatsoever and if you do it's only because you need to run a few cycles thru it. We are coffee and tea drinkers so this thing is so great I can't think of another appliance that is better. It sure beats micro waving or heating up water on your stove...total waste of time.

This is the best book i've ever read on boiler. This book has been a great reference for me to pass my Steam Engineer examination. I passed the exam by only reading this book and without attending any course. Easy to understand and Kohan answers most common asked question in boiler exams and common doubt among boiler engineers. This book actually answared 90% of the questions that i have doubt in.

Excellent as a Learning Tool, but not enough to get your license
This book is an excellent learning tool for new boiler/plant operators. It gives a basic understanding of most aspects of Plant operation. Unfortunately, the generalized nature of the book doesn't lend itself to answer specific questions an inexperienced yet knowledgeable person might have. My point is, this book can give you an overview of everything you need to learn about operating a steam plant, but it won't be enough to prepare you for a tough licensing exam. As a guide and a place to start, this book is excellent and a must read for people wishing to enter the world of stationary engineering. Just remember you'll need more when you're done with this one.

Boiler operators guide - a must have
I am currently studying for a New Zealand Boiler Attendants National Certifificate level 2 (for operating boilers up to 6MW)and have been operating for over 2 years. I wish I'd had this book before I sent my last 2 assignments in. I would thoroughly recommend this book for any operator.
Only negative I have is the lack of metric units, but that does'nt detract from the usefullnes of this book.

Guiding Lites for Boiler Operators
This book provides a good basic understanding of boiler operations on a wide variety of boilers. It is geared towards the novice operator or for as a learning guide. The depth is somewhat limited and is not supported by any theory. The author describes the overall process but does not get into optimizing the boiler, which every operator should do.

This reading is not meant to be entertaining or for light reading, but a study guide for the operator...

Used Often
We love this and use it for hot tea daily. I have used this heated water to cook thawed shrimp! Lots you can do. VERY handy, used daily, and it's lots of temperature-contolled hot water at the ready. The only complaint that I have is that Amazon delivered it with a rather substantial dent in the side. It cannot be removed, but we didn't send it back because it still works and we wanted to use it. But I ask you, HOW does a major purchase arrive with a large DENT in it??!! The box seemed to be roughly treated. What gives??!!

High quality Japanese product. Work as advertised. But I saw it sold for 30 bucks cheaper at the local Asian Ranch 99 supermarket in CA!

So far, so good!
I've been using the Zojirushi water boiler daily for almost a month and have no complaints. It works as promised, the lid is easy to remove, I like how it swivels so it's easy to unplug and has the window for observing the water level, and I LOVE the timer feature. As other reviewers have commented, the water comes in handy for so many other uses: rinsing pans and sticky cereal bowls, jump-starting pasta water, warming water in a dishpan without running the tap for a minute!

Getting the right temp for green tea takes a bit of planning because--as I understand it, at least--it first boils the water and then lets the temp drop to 175, where it then maintains it at 175, rather than just warming it to that temp and then staying there without going all the way to boil first. If I have this wrong, I'm sure someone will jump in to correct me!

Edited to add: I generally use filtered water, so I didn't have to clean the boiler for two months. When I did, I followed the recommendation of another reviewer and purchased a pound of citric acid crystals from our natural foods co-op to use for cleaning, measuring out the grams and then converting it into tablespoons. For me, that worked out to 2 tbsp + 1/4 tsp (YMMV). The cleaning went perfectly and there was no residual smell at all.

We love our second Zojirushi
We love this second Zojirushi much as the first one. We have been using these puppies in the kitchen for years now and I cannot imagine a kitchen without - but a kitchen with it is definitely not the norm. I love it so much I dedicated an entire blog post on my blog [...] to it and its benefits. This particular one is excellent, efficient, has a nice chime, has a quick and slow release and 4 temperatures which makes it very practical but we only use the 208 F setting.
I am a die hard fan of Zojirushi products and recommend this in a heart beat. Expensive, maybe, but indispensable!

After 500 Boils, 100% Dependable.
I bought this electric kettle in early May after studying in England for a semester (I promised myself this invention was just too nifty to not have). In England, the electric kettles brought water to a boil somewhere between 1-2 minutes. When I first got this one, I took right at about 5 minutes, which I, honestly, thought was a little long, even considering that the 220V and 120V difference in currency between America and the UK would make the boil slower here (same reason I saw an alarm clock melt before my eyes there). But, pretty soon, the kettle started boiling a little quicker (for whatever reason..).

Now, completely filled, from cold sink water, it boils 1.5 liters (about 50 American fluid ounces) in right about 4 minutes consistently. If the water is even lukewarm from a previous boil or just not cold, it will go in closer to 3. If the water has already been boiled within a period of about 20 minutes (the kettle keeps water warm for over an hour), it'll only take a minute, maximum. I drink lots of hot drinks (I probably boil the kettle about 5 times a day), so this is an absolute "must-have" if boiling water is a frequent task in everyday life. Very easy to use and (from my experience) very safe. It has never failed to shut off when boiling. It will boil for about 10 seconds, then shuts off accordingly. The outside does get pretty hot, so beware of that when handling it (the sturdy plastic handle doesn't get hot at all, though). I do not have any kids, but I would figure that any electric kettle needs to be kept away from children too small to handle or too young to understand the capacities of boiling water (or the metal that encases it).

It does not have any plastic aromas or harmful particles to it, speaking for my specific kettle. I'm almost certain that the only surface that water ever touches is the metal. It's also quite sleek and easy to move around. The cord (which is attached to the plate that the kettle boils on, but isn't attached to the kettle) is only about 2 feet, though, which is really my only "complaint," if you can call it that (I think anything over 3 feet would be too long).

Anyway, in summary, I give this kettle a 5/5 and recommend it to anyone. It's definitely worth the money, and is extremely helpful for people who have a desire to boil water many times a day, for whatever reason.

(College students: It cooks Ramen perfectly. But, don't eat too much of that junk.. it's terrible for you).

Great when it worked; broke after 14 months
I loved this product when it was working. I bought it in May 2009, and it made hot water quickly and reliably until last week, when it stopped working. I called Aroma, and they said that it had a 12-month warranty. They also said, however, that it "should not have stopped working after 14 months," and that they "stand behind their products" and provide out-of-warranty service. Unfortunately, the fees, handling and shipping for such service would add up to something in the neighborhood of 25 or 30 bucks, and I can just about get a new unit for that. I explained that, if (a) this "shouldn't" have happened, and (b) they "stand behind their products," then professing to offer service but making that option financially untenable was a funny way of showing it. Both the customer service rep and her supervisor were unmoved by this line of discussion, but I maintain that their policy is functionally the same as saying "you pays your money and you takes your chances; go buy a new one!" That's fine I guess, but I probably won't be buying a new one from Aroma.

I am going to try my primitive gadget-mending skills on it, and if that fails, I will be in the market for a new kettle. As i noted, probably a different brand. I can't afford to buy one of these every 14 months.

Efficient, fast and reliable- I love it!
I live next to this water kettle in the winter. It is fantastic for making hot tea on a cold day. And, unlike my last kettle, I never have to worry if I walk away and forget about it. It shuts off automatically! I have one, my mom-in-law has one, and we've given it as a gift within the family. I highly recommend this item!

Everything is just right, only caveat is the speed to boil
Have this for over two years now, still works like new. Always shuts itself off (those that think it doesn't - try closing the lid :)

In the pictures it looks like the cable retracts, mine doesn't - maybe I need to open up the base and oil it. But it's very convenient, looks good, water tastes great. Only caveat is that it takes a while to boil water, but that's usually not an issue unless you're looking to boil more than one load.

All in all, highly recommended especially for the price.

Low Pressure Boilers
Lots of information about low pressure boilers. Wonderful illustrations. The only downfall is that the book is not very fun to read,i guess it is a technical book, not a novel. The CD is put together well, good video and context. Overall, good book!

Amazon had the absolute best price and I paid the extra to have it shipped the very next day -- amazing, the book arrived a couple of hours before the start of his class. About the book, my husband loves the organization of the book and especially the CD that's located in the back of the book. He's online just as much as he is reading the actual book. It seems as though he's had that book forever - it's marked up with highlighter markings. Great buy from amazon!

Nice Design and Setting Options

Another easy Zoji product
Having had good experiences with other Zojirushi products, such as their bread and coffee makers, I decided to try this in my new office. While my old office had a kitchen, my new one doesn't so a water pot seemed to be a good solution.

Filling the pot with water is fairly easy, although the pot may prove a bit heavy to some when full. The directions aren't clear on this, but the lid does come off easily. Emptying the pot is easy as well. Emptying the pot at the end of each day is a good idea to keep down lime build up.

The water level indicator on the front of the pot is a bit hard to read at first. At least it doesn't have some sort of floating ball that can become stuck.

The pot has some sort of timer that I haven't quite figured out yet. It seems to be a timer to turn on, but a automatic off timer would be more useful.

The pot allows different temperature settings. But what the pot does is bring the water up to a boil and then somehow lowers it back down to the set temperature. Timewise, this makes for a counter-intuitive estimation of how much time it will take. You would think that a lower temperature would be quicker, but the opposite is true. The pot certainly does take longer to reach any temperature as compared to my electric Bodum pot, but not so much longer as to be a real bother. I save time in the long run by just having the water ready throughout the day.

As noted, the water is first brought to a boil. That was a concern as it may result in flat or lifeless water. However, the water tasted just fine. I'm using it exclusively for tea, mostly oolong and green. Tea, more than coffee, can reflect bad water but the tea doesn't taste any different than tea out of my regular electric pot.

The water temperatures are geared to tea, with the proper temperature for white, green, oolong and black tea. There is a setting for 205 degrees, a good temperature for coffee, but I haven't used it.

Speaking of coffee, there are two dispensing methods. One is to dispense at a normal (but by no means gushing) rate. The other is a slow dispense that I imagine would be great for drip coffee.

The thing is a bit noisier than I would have expected. When it reaches it first boil you can hear it. Thereafter, it is quiet. There's also a chime to tell you when it is set at the desired temperature.

The power cord is normal at the plug but is different at the pot. It has some sort of short plugs and a magnet. This makes it very easy to unplug when filling or not in use (there's no power switch, you just unplug it). In some situation, say on a busy kitchen counter, the plug may be knocked undone easily.

Clean up should be easy. The pot is fully open at the top and the lid comes off. There is some sort of small wire filter on the bottom that is easily struck when wiping out the pot and could become dislodged. The manual warns of this.

As may be seen in the photo, the dispensing nozzle is far enough away to fill a fairly large teapot. The entire unit swivels on the base. The exterior of the pot does not heat up appreciably and appears to be well insulated.

The only reason I knocked it down a star is that I don't see why it can't simply bring up the water to the desired temperature without having to come to a full boil first. While I didn't note any taste differences, it does add time unnecessarily.

Excellent way to make tea!
I was a little concerned about the reviews that mentioned a weird smell and deposits from the water. I use filtered water from the fridge door and have experienced NO problems at all.

It is so nice to have water on demand at the perfect temperature - no more messing with the microwave or tea pot!

So far this is a great product and performs exactly like the description says.

I am so happy to have one of these again!
My mother is from Taiwan, and having one of these in the kitchen was fairly common throughout my childhood. I have always loved these, and prefer them to the "instant" water boilers that heat water in two minutes. The reason is this. Every time I go to boil the darned thing, I walk away and forget about it...by the time I remember and head to the kitchen, the water has cooled, and I have to re-boil it. With the zojirushi, all I have to do is walk to the kitchen, push a button, and I have my hot tea.

I am the only one currently using this in my household (I have a room mate), so I thought the smaller 3 liter would be suficient, especially since it is a little cheaper. I didn't realize how often I would be using this! It is perfect for making a pitcher of tea to keep in the fridge, or a single cup of hot tea in the morning (it is also great for hot cocoa on cold days!). I admit, I also use it to start the water boiling on the stove. I have an electric range, and it takes so long to warm up! I just put some hot water from my zojirushi in it, and cut the time in half! It is great for a hot cup of soup, or instant noodles. It has so many uses. I have been filling it up nearly daily.

I did read in the instruction manual that on the first use, you should fill it, boil it, and then empty a liter out of it. Let the rest cool, then pour it out. I unplugged mine while it was full in order to allow the water to cool. The manual did say that there may be a slight plastic-y taste/smell that will dissipate with use. I did not experience that. My zojirushi does not smell of plastic, nor does it impart a flavor into the water.

I also noticed that you can get a cleaner for it...we never bought a special cleaner for mineral build up. We just used a third a cup of white vinegar, filled it with water, let it sit unplugged for a few hours, gently wiped the insides out with a sponge, and went back to regular use. So far, I have not noticed any mineral build up. I do not know that the coating on the inside will help prevent this in the future, nor do I know if vinegar will hurt this coating though. Ours did not have a no stick coating in it, so when the time comes, I will be sure to use approved cleaners for it.

My only qualm with it is this. The colors. Like many other people out there, my kitchen is mainly black and chrome appliances. Zojirushi does make a black/grey model that would have fit my decor better, but I didn't think it would hold enough water. It was also more expensive than this one. The color is pleasant, but it just dosn't match as well as I would like. Don't get me wrong, I still love it!

Not for tea
I really expected more from this brand. Yes it has different temperature settings BUT with each setting the water is boiled to 100c(for about 5 mins) and then brought back down to the selected temperature, which is ridiculous. The reason you want different water temperature settings for tea is so the water would not over boil, and this system completely defeats that.

The product was a very old version of the book - The picture was not the same as the product. I kept the book to avoid the return process. NOT 100% satified.

"High Pressure Boilers" Book by Steingress & Frost
Overall, I think that this is an excellent book... I originally purchased it to help me study for taking my Chief "A" Boilers Exam for the state of Minnesota. Just to let it be known that this is a great study guide for the "B" Boilers Exams - not the "A" Exams (for Low & High Pressure Boilers - not Turbines, but I figured that when I purchased it)... I really liked that it had "Test Quizzes" at the end of each chapter (there are 12 Chapters in the book) with one of the chapters at the end that has six practice exams. There is one thing that I didn't like about this book is that there is no "Answer Key" for the quizzes in the book so you would have to go through the chapters to find the correct answer. However, the CD-ROM provided several practice exams & it gave you the correct answers for each question (although there were a couple of questions that even with the correct answer selected, it would still mark it wrong). I took the Chief "A" Boilers Exam for the state of Minnesota in the fall of 2008 & I did very well on it:) Many of the questions on the exam I have seen in the quizzes in this book (mainly in the "Licensing Chapter" & on the CD-ROM), but this is still with the "old test" - I was told that the Minnesota Boilers Exams were going to be updated & made more difficult.

After the exam, this book makes a great reference book for boiler operations (such as changing a sightglass, starting up & shutting down a boiler, preparing a boiler for inspection, etc.). Although I really do wish that there was an "Answer Key" with it along with explanations for some of the answers, I think that it's a great book to have as a "Boiler Operator":)

Review of Bennet Books
I ordered a used edition of this book which was in exellent condition, but I realized that it wasn't the book I could use. So, I sent it back to Bennet Books. Not Of Technical Value for Serious Engineers-
This book was a great disappointment in that it had virtually
no formulas, stress analysis for the serious mechanical engineer.
The multitude of questions and answeres may help someone understand the parameters of boiler operation, it will not be of help to the designer of boilers. In the latter case a book of ASME codes, stress analysis, theory of heat transfer would be of much greater value. High Pressure Boilers provides little if none of this. On the other hand the book "ASME Code Simplified"
shipped with this book is of considerable value.
