An easy to use GPS that's great for field work
I purchased this GPS at the end of April 2010. After using it for over 3 months of field work, i feel I've gotten enough experience with the unit to write this review.

First thing I recommend doing before using the gps is to get the topo maps for your area. The basemaps on the gps are horrible, there's no detail and they are inaccurate. It's also a good idea to get a case for it and a screen protector to prevent scratching the screen and scuffing the exterior. I got this case for my gps, NEW CASE for GARMIN GPSMap 72/76 GPS in 'Hunters & Hikers Brown' w/ Webbing Loop, Lanyard, Clip & "Peel & Stick" Screen Protector. - For Garmin GPSMap 72/ 76/ 76S/ 76CS/ 76CSx/ 76 Cx/ West Marine 76cs plus. Molded 'E-Z-Grip' Protection. Made in USA by F... , it fits perfectly and came with 2 screen protectors. The case does not affect the signal from my experience. I also bought a 2gb micro sd card with the GPS, but it came with a 1 gb micro sd card in the unit. I loaded all the topo maps for the province of Ontario and that took up about 700mb.

Performance wise, the gps works great it picks up signals quickly and I've never had any issues of losing a signal when I put the gps into my cruising vest pocket. The screen is easy to read even in bright sunlight. I've used it in different kinds of weather and I haven't had any problems so far. The tracks recording is not as detailed as the Colorado 400t, but it still works without any problems.

If you've never used ArcMap or have any idea what it is, the next paragraph will not make sense. For work, my company uses ArcMap, and with the garmin dnr extension, loading blocks (polygons) and waypoints into the gps is relatively simple (you will need some knowledge of how to setup the garmin dnr options so that the polygons appear in the right projection). You can also use it to download waypoints and tracks from the gps into ArcMap. Using another program called mapedit and send2gps gives you the ability to create your own garmin compatible image files that you can load onto the gps. For those of you familiar with garmin dnr, when you load up multiple polygons, the gps will treat it as a track and snap lines between all the polygons you upload, unless you upload and save them separately. This can be really annoying when you have to load up dozens of tiny blocks. Also, the topo maps only have the main bush roads, they don't show a lot of the secondary and tertiary roads. Using mapedit, I am able to take shape files from ArcMap and convert them into image files that can be loaded onto the gps. Using send2gps, I am then able to send these image files over to the gps creating a single image file that looks like a map made using ArcMap when using the gps. The only limitation to this is you can only use the golf course green or lake blue colour for your blocks, but in the map setup options you can turn on/off individual image files that you loaded.

So far, I've been very impressed with the 76csx. It is easy to use, gives you more control in managing tracks, and the ability to use other programs to upload/create maps for the gps is a major plus for me.

Also, using NiMh 2500mah rechargeable batteries and the battery saver mode gives me 20-23 hours of use, compared to the Colorado 400t which gets me about 13-15 hours.

I've never tried to use the navigation option while driving, so I cannot comment on how well it works.

The screen is not as good as the screens for the newer gps's that've been released, but if you're looking for a rugged gps for work purposes, I highly recommend the 76csx with the topo maps for your area or if you have the ability to upload shape files.
Not Compatible with Routes Created in Mapsource
Routes created using Garmin's mapsource software on a PC may be transferred to the GPSMAP 76, but when recalculated by the handheld, the routes are not the same as those created in mapsource. In fact, they were substantially different.

Garmin support explained that the Mapsource software and the GPS76CSX use different routing algorithms. The only way around this is to add waypoints in the Mapsource routes to force the handheld to follow the routes you create on the PC. There is nothing in the documentation of either about this problem. This is a time consuming pain in the A.

This is enough of a problem that we would not purchase garmin for this use again. The routes designed on the PC must match the routes in the handheld after transfer.
Works well
I got this to replace a seven year old Etrex and to help verify private aids to navigation for the USCG Auxiliary. It is very accurate, seems to have a long battery life, and picks up satellites quickly. My one complaint is that accessing the tide table function has been made more obscure than on older 76s (it's not listed on the Main Menu as it used to be under Celestial, which is also no longer there) and the manual is not very clear. It seems to imply that if you want to access the tide info you must buy the MapSource BlueChart g2 marine cartography. Actually, you can get to the tide info by going to the Marine Points icon under the Find menu. So to sum up. Good product with minor organizational issues.
Garmin 76 CSX
Product is OK, but all of the stuff you need to buy to make it work is limited. Bought it for the marine use on inland lakes and they offer the software, but it has no real detail like the maps you buy for the same lakes. Instructions are limited and you just have to trial and error to make it work. Also ordered the city navigation but even though it is a 2010 map, it is out of date. Also the detail of places to see and eat is out of date.
Garmin GPSMap 76 CSX
Overall, a great GPS. I do wish that it was easier to enter waypoint names and also wish a description of the waypoint could be entered. Regarding maps, I recommend only buying the DVD version otherwise they cannot be viewed on your PC as well as the GPS-- learned the hard way. Last nit... wish the screen was bigger.

Unreliable - freezes frequently
Got one of these a couple of weeks ago. Firstly I've found the fish-finding less than impressive, though this is my first fishfinder, so wasn't sure what to expect and I imagine it's as good as others in that respect.

My main gripe with the fish-finding is it gives you no direction as to where the fish are. Behind you, in front, to the left of the boat, the right..? No idea, just 'There's fish around here, somewhere.'

My BIG concern however is that the unit frequently freezes up.

I primarily use it as a depth finder, as there are many shallow areas around the coast here and on the river to it. At the wrong time of day you can easily get stuck in certain places, so was really looking forward to getting this.

Generally it works but I relied on it while exploring further up the coast than we normally go. "41 feet....41 feet... 41 feet.."

We ploughed into sandy mud in water less than four feet, not forty one.

Yes, we had a chart, yes I knew there was a shallow area nearby; that's why I kept checking the depth to ensure we didn't get too near it, without taking a much longer route.

Happily I was able to immediately turn on full lock while raising the engine, tilting the boat over and lifting the engine at the same time, and we managed to claw our way off. Had we been stuck we would have been really stuck, 2 miles offshore, with the boat tipping over as the tide receded - before coming back.

In inaccurate map is worse than useless - and an inaccurate depth finder is dangerous.

I've given it only one star, with an extra one because the screen is great and it's simple to operate. The instability of the software however is a serious concern.

Since that incident it has done the same thing twice more, freezing up. Turning it off and back on fixes it - but be aware it takes around 30 seconds to start up and figure out the depth again.

Overall I'd say it's better than nothing but do NOT rely on it to give continous depth readings.
Worst one I ever owned
This is without a doubt the worst fish/depth finder I have ever owned. The depth gage changes so slow, you can go from 100' to 1' and be agroundand it will still be at 100'. If you fish in three feet of water for ten minutes and than move out to four feet, you actually have to shut the unit off and turn it back on for it to change depths. I'm sure I've had it to long to return (two months) but I can't wait to replace it. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE.
GARMIN 360C
I returned the Garmin 160C for the 360C per boyfriend's request. Before I received the GArmin 360C Amazon had received and reimbursed me for the Garmin 160C within 1 business day!! WOW!!! That was FABULOUS!!! Amaon- You rock!!
Perfect fish finder
This fish finder is very nice. I got this for my husband and he loves it. The shipping was fast and well packed. I would highly recomend this fish finder as well as the seller to everyone.
Good value
Good no-frills, middle of the line fishfinder. Good all around value for the price point.

Alleviates stress for first-time UK driving
I purchased this add-on a few weeks before first driving over in the UK - Scotland to be exact (I'm from the US, never driven on the left-side of the road before). It arrived over a week before I left. I fiddled with it before I left the US. The only harrowing issue occurred when I first got off my plane in Edinburgh - my Garmin couldn't pick up a signal. Turns out that no GPS's pick up a signal right near the airport. By the time I got to the rental car, the signal was there, as were the Scottish roads and directions to my first destination. This add-on was fantastic - really essential and alleviated the stress of driving in the UK (especially the windy Scottish countryside) for the first-time. Perfect for roundabouts if you're not used to them (tells you '1st exit, second exit,' etc). And whenever I was in a town or village where I wanted to do some sight-seeing or walk around, I turned the Garmin to 'pedestrian' mode and found all kinds of places to eat, shop, drink, and visit. One shouldn't be that excited over technology, but honestly this little add-on made my time in Scotland even more enjoyable. Highly recommend, especially for ignorant Americans like myself who are first-time UK drivers!
Don't waste your money, low quality off-the-sheld media
If you want to get the UK/Ireland map, get the download from Garmin. The MicroSD/SD is an off-the-shelf brand that doesn't work reliably. You can buy higher quality media on your own rather than this cheap adapter kit. I'm very disappointed with this amateur product from Garmin.
great buy
The maps were great just type in venue in Rome and walk directly to it. We traveled thru italy and england never got lost, worth every penny
Good, but could be better
The map is good and precise.
One day in the city of Sao Paulo I was near a shopping center and the navigator just did not display it !!
And It was'nt a new place ! Some places are just missing !!!
The radar cameras are not provided and it's nedded to downloaded separetedely ( too bad !)
Better than not having it
I got the Garmin Brazil map addition in SD card and was somewhat disappointed with it.
For starters, it doesn't come with any instructions at all. In fact, all I needed to do was insert the card in the GPS unit, but took me a while to figure that out b/c I thought I needed to connect the unit to the computer and install something. A little piece of paper with instructions would have gone a LONG way.

Then I finally got to use the maps in Sao Paulo, Brazil. You definitely have to take it with a grain of salt. My experience with the maps in the US is that you can trust the GPS unit to take you where you want to go with no problems. In Brazil, it's not quite like that... it sends you the wrong way on one way streets, tries to put you on busy roads (hard to get shortcuts that way) and that makes you have to pay a lot more attention to what you're doing. Once I put in a destination, I often have to change the route and wait for the GPS to re-route b/c the original route didn't quite work.

But... it's better than nothing. Sao Paulo is huge and without it I'd be lost for sure, so it's worth the money.

My final note is that even though it contains maps for the most important cities and probably all you'll need, it's not as thorough as the US and lacks a lot of coverage.

Overall, if you don't have an alternative in mind, it's better to have this than have nothing.

Buy a SmartPhone instead.
Had this less than a year and it is very helpful when you go place's you've never been to before. You can search for places to eat and see in an area your not familiar with. It seems to always get me to where I want to go. I like the built in speaker and antenna.
Only thing I don't like is that mine already needs updating after less than a year. When on a newer road My little truck icon is out in no mans land, and the unit keeps trying to get me back on a known road. The maps are updatable (not free) and not sure what "Extras" are but they can also be downloaded.
Mine is set on "fastest route" and I know from testing on my home roads that it does not always know the fastet route. This makes me question it when I'm out of town.
I'll use my Android smart phone from now on. Smartphones have nearly made car GPS unit's obsolete. Only thing is the GPS units work when the cell phones don't have a signal.

Garmin C550
Feel's like I have to hide it from my wife!
:)
It's great!!
Easy to use. I keep finding more and more features everytime I use it, and I've had it over a month now. Nice big screen. I've never had a GPS before, and it's very user friendly. Of course I could think of more it could do, like serve me coffee and such, but I'm satisfied, even with its limitations.
Garmin 550 Street Pilot, now discontinued
I loved this GPS as it has "Truck Routes" in it for us RV enthusiasts but it has now been discontinued by Garmin so I cannot get their lifetime Update program which disappoints me. I still use this most days but I don't want to spend $70.00 to update it for one year now so we will probably buy a replacement in a few years with the lifetime update program. Otherwise it has been a wonderful piece of equipment and I would recommend Garmin and Amazon for the free shipping and no sales tax!
Love it!
I ordered this model because my husband received the same one as a gift, and I loved his. Great price for great model.
NOT AS ADVERTISED
So far this unit works fairly well but I haven't been able to figure out all of the features yet. It came with a flyer of quick instructions but no real instruction book. I just returned from a short trip 3 hours from home and it tried to take me on a path 45 minutes out of my way. I am sure this is because the settings are for scenic route, back roads only or something else but since there are no real instructions I will have to stumble around with the program until I figure it out. It was advertised to include an interface cable to the computer and a suction mount neither of which was in the box. I have tried to purchase a cable but since I live in a rural community the resources are skimpy. It appears to me that this was a repackaged item that was not checked to verify that everything was in the package.

Great features at a great price
The Forerunner 301 is a great GPS for the beginning, moderate level runner. I am training for a half marathon and am shooting for a PR. To accomplish my goal, I needed something that would report my pace along the way. This is a cool GPS and is easy to use. I recommend it highly.
Garmin Forerunner 301
Originally purchased this for my grandfather who walks every day. But then remembered that he had a pacemaker and there was a warning to contact your physician if this was the case. It worried him too much so I ended up keeping it for myself. It is a little bulky, but works as described. I did have a little tree interference, but it re-calculated quickly. I have not used the heart monitor yet.
First GPS watch
This is a decent product but like everyone else has mentioned it has trouble with satelite connection when trail running.
A great running unit, but not perfect.
The Garmin 301 is a great running GPS that will provide you with info on all of your runs. Its great to calculate your calories burned, miles ran, average speed and pace, as well as many other features. I could go on and on about how great the features are on this unit. However, there is one draw back...

The GPS reception is not great, and it is not very accurate. I ran 8 laps around a metric track and my GPS was off by about 330 feet at the end of 2 miles. It may lose GPS signal as well, if you are using this as a solution to accurate distance and timing, this unit is not for you. Its an "average" reading unit, meaning don't beat yourself if you don't beat your old mile or two mile by a few seconds, my unit regularly changes the same distances I run by a few hundred feet. It also read a few hundred feet difference in elevation while running on the track. Again, the features are awesome, but what can you expect from a unit that is no much bigger than a cell phone? Its great for an overall or average reading but not for extremely accurate readings.
Love my Garmin!!
I have been wanting to purchase a Garmin Forerunner. I looked at all the different units available and compaired different evaluations on all the Forerunners from a different website and saw that overall this unit was rated highly by its users. I LOVE this GPS!!!

So far - ease of use, the features offered are easy to access, and this product included a CD to load the proper program on my computer. The sync process is easy and the graphics on the program show me where I need to improve. I haven't utilized the heartrate monitor yet so I will not be rating this.

Overall I am very please with the Garmin Forerunner 301.

I recently bought the Spot 2 for a trip I was making in my single engine airplane. I was planning to fly from Texas up to the Great White North, thence to Greenland, Iceland, and then down through the UK to Italy and onward to my final destination in Cyprus. The trip went quite well and the Spot worked perfectly. It never missed an update, even in the most remote areas of Greenland. My wife and family really appreciated the steady updates of my location and the OK messages when I landed each day. It was easy to use and, even after 60+ hours of use, I'm still using the original batteries.

I know some users have issues with the emergency response function. Thankfully, I never had to test this, but even if I never used this functionality, it is well worth the acquisition and subscription fees just for family updates while traveling. My wife would also give it the 5 stars! The [...] website is also really nice to have--search for my Adventure there using N456T as a keyword. (By the way, I use a portable ACR 406 MHz ELT for emergency use anyway, so the Spot emergency function is just a third option.)
SPOT2 - Pretty Good Tracking Device for Outdoors

Re-posting this review to proper place for product on Amazon Web page ...

I have a SPOT 2 tracker that I recently purchased from an REI outdoors store. I use the device mainly to provide added safety when I am doing long motorcycle trips. We also use it for our family vehicle during vacations, and I would cetainly take it if I was going hiking into remote country.

The SPOT2 design was modified by the manufacturer so that the keys that activate the SOS signal and the Roadside Assistance signal are protected by small covers. You have to open a small plastic cover and push these buttons - in order for the emergency services to work. That's probably a good design idea ... I can see where this device could generate false alarms if these buttons were not protected. It follows that you must be alert and conscious - in order to send an emergency request for help with the SPOT2. The device won't do it by itself - there is no auotmatic timeout system.

I decided to subscribe to the "tracking service", which allows the SPOT2 device to send updated signals with your position. You do pay extra $$ in order to have this service available from SPOT. But the charges seem reasonable. Basically, the SPOT2 sends a new location signal (with GPS info) through the satellite system every 10 minutes, and these automatic updates are recorded at the main Web page for SPOT. It would be helpful if the user could vary the time delay between these automatic tracking updates, but right now it's fixed at 10 minutes. I have tried the tracking out during some long motorcycle rides, and it seems to work pretty well. It's possible for a third party to log onto your SPOT page if you give them your username and password (Web page at [...]), then view all the updated coordinates, and plot them out on an online map (similar to Yahoo maps). So the online map display shows a series of points that are separated in time by 10 mins along your route. I have NOT had any problems with satellite coverage, nor any dropouts from the SPOT2 device. I have been using it in California. I think the tracking system is a very handy emergency system - because it does allow someone to check on your recent progress. Presumably if your course shows that you've come to a complete standstill for a long period of time, then eventually someone will wonder why. Of course, you need to BRIEF that person on what they are supposed to expect, and then what to do.

The only real disadvantage of the SPOT system right now - is with their Web page at [...] . The layout of the Web page is fine, but the response time for this Web page to actually come up on your PC is increibly slow. When you first log on, in order to record details for your SPOT user information, it may literally take a few minutes before the network computers at their site get back to you. Really slow!! Naturally, this does not inspire a lot of confidence in their overall system - given that the people running SPOT are supposedly operating a modern worldwide system for emergency messaging. They seriously need to update their Web services to a much faster response time! However, if you are patient then you will succeed in getting your device registered, and then in getting things working. I have noticed that the main problem seems to be the initial response from the SPOT service, but once they do come up on your computer then subsequent communications are a bit faster.

Personally, I think the SPOT2 device is pretty good and worth having as a valuable messaging tool in an emergency. Keep in mind that you must be alert and conscious to activate the SOS or Roadside Assistance buttons. However, if you subscribe to the tracking fature, and you provide a detailed briefing to someone you trust on how to monitor your progress, then the updated map of your progress would be a very useful emergency tool (NOTE: this feature does not require you to be conscious or alive in order to work - it just requires that the SPOT2 device can send receivable signals to the open sky).

Finally - none of this technology should ever be a substitute for good judgment and common sense. Those are the most important ingredients to staying alive ... any time you are venturing into some remote part of this planet.

Good luck!
And hopefully you won't ever need the real thing.
Spot GPS Messenger testing and first expedition
Purchased the Spot GPS messenger for use in the Australian Wilderness.

Spot GPS messenger performs better than expected.

During testing:
- Messages were sent & received in under 60 seconds, from Spot power on, to receipt as an SMS on nominated mobile phones;
- Messages were successfully sent despite extensive overhead coverage. Most impressive were the successful messages that transmitted from my living room, with only the skylight offering a view of the sky;
- Spot GPS unit is smaller and lighter than I imagined it would be.

During first expedition:
- Worked well, with first message being sent and successfully received within 60 seconds of power on.
- During the entire trip, all but one message was successfully received by my wife.
- The one message that did not transmit was sent from inside a wet tent, under a soaking wet rain forest canopy.
- Next time in wet conditions I would leave the Spot Messenger running for the full hour of the message cycle and let all three messages get transmitted.

Having a Spot messenger means I can push my expeditions further and into tougher terrain, knowing if things do go pear shaped, I can call for assistance.
Works Great!
I had the SPOT 1 that was quite poor in reception and operation. I am very glad I upgraded to the Spot 2 Messenger as it fixes most all the problems with the SPOT 1.

The new SPOT 2 Messenger is MUCH better. For example, on a wilderness use underneath thick foliage, the SPOT 2 worked surprisingly fast. After Power On, I hit the OK button which started blinking. The green GPS LED illuminated in ~15 seconds indicating reception and location was found, while I was under thick trees! The after a few more seconds GPS and Transit LEDs blinked Green together for another 3 seconds. Then only the Green Transmit LED stayed blinking to assure transmission was successful. Everything happened in under 30 seconds from Power On under thick trees. This is far better than up to 20 minutes on the older SPOT 1 in the open, and the SPOT1 never worked under trees.

Overall, the LED lights make more sense now, and a portable plastic instruction card included. The LEDs now shows more feedback on success or fail like described in the example above.

I like the new cover over the Help and 911 buttons. They include a couple spare covers in case they get broken lost, but they're locked down by the back plate anyway.

I'm glad I upgraded. In sum it's a major improvement in every way:
Much Smaller - about the size of a cell phone but rounder
Lighter - less than a cell phone
Better Buttons - now with protecting covers on emergency buttons
Better Indicators with more feedback
Much Faster - seconds versus minutes to receive GPS and transmit messages
Better Reception - works fast and under deep woods, as well as my top Garmin GPS

As for usefulness, last weekend I ran into the Ranger today at one of my favorite MTB parks, Henry Coe just south of San Jose. It's a very big park 10s of miles across and many large mountains and deep woods to get lost in, with rescues often needed.

I mentioned I had a SPOT and asked the Ranger's opinion. He said the SPOT saved two people in just this one park in the last two years - one was a biker who broke his collar bone and helicoptered out. The other was a camper who got appendicitis and couldn't move out of his tent. He said they were both in remote and hidden locations that would have taken a lot of work to find. Instead, he drove exactly to their location in under an hour, and helped the injured to a hospital.

The Ranger said he permitted one biker to put the Ranger's email into biker's SPOT notification list. He finds it fun to watch where the guy is going on Google Earth, each time the biker rides the park, sending OK messages with the SPOT.

Anyway, I was surprised that the SPOT was so useful and the Ranger liked the SPOT so much. I was expecting to hear him say something about false alarms and no real emergencies. Instead the Ranger said the opposite - the SPOT was extremely helpful to them and he wished everyone had it.

I personally find it useful to send OK messages to my wife on my remote mountain biking trips. That way she can see my progress and if I'm running late. It also comforts me to know if something bad happens to me such I can't hit the buttons, she can follow the OK "dots" on the Google Map links and start looking where they end. Other PLBs can't do this.
SPOT Review
Excellent product, smaller than the first generation with the SOS and Need Assistance buttons being covered so you won't accidentally press them.

It's easy to use and it makes my family feel better about my travels when I'm away from home. They can track where I am, if I want them to and I feel safer knowing that I have help if I really need it. I highly recommend this product to anyone who travels, hikes or boats. The cost is definately worth knowing if you really need help its a button push away.

A bottom-rung $49.00 XM radio works better than this
My husband (an over-the-road truck driver) used this XM antenna on a StreetPilot7200, and it lost signal *constantly*. Also, if your StreetPilot7200 fails like ours did (along with 2 replacement rebuilt units) and you have no intention of ever buying another Garmin product, then you are stuck with a basically worthless XM antenna and out a lot of money. Begrudingly, at the end of the string of failed StreetPilot7200s, we bought a cheapo $49.00 XM radio from Walmart, and it has worked fine for several months now and does not lose signal like the GXM30.
GXM 30A Antenna
I use the GXM 30A antenna connected to my Garmin 396 to gather in flight weather. Having weather is great, however, this antenna has let me down 50% of the time. The USB cord is designed to fail. It's so fragile that under normal use you can only hope to see it last for a year or two. The cost to replace the entire antenna is $500. Garmin wants $110 to repair the cord. Just build a durable product in the first place and charge me once for it. I'm of sick and tired of being nickel and dimed to death by Garmin to replace cords and antennas on every unit...every year!
I've had this for a few years...
I originally got this when I had a StreetPilot 2820. I tried the FM Traffic but it didn't seem to be giving me very accurate information at the time (the FM Service seems to have improved since then). Anyway the bottom line for this unit:

- it's about the size and shape of a hockey puck
- it is a specialized XM Radio. That is why it's so expensive (even then it still seems a bit expensive to me). If you get it and subscribe to XM you can plug this unit into any Garmin GPS and it will continue functioning.
- the cable that is attached to it is 2 meters, I believe. Kind of short for most people. You can put two of the Garmin extension cables ($15 on Amazon) between your GPS and the XM Radio so that you can place it just about anywhere on your car. It's limited by the specs of USB cable length.
- you can subscribe to just Traffic (~[...]/month I think), XM + traffic (which I think will run you [...] (XM) + [...](traffic) + [...] (the music royality fee introduced over the summer-2009) = [...]/month, or XM + traffic + weather (weather adds an additional [...] to the traffic but will get you weather radar + other features/maps if your GPS supports it)
- traffic service comes with basic weather which is current conditions and forecast for major cities in the U.S. If your GPS doesn't support the additional weather maps then definitely only subscribe to the traffic service.
- You can get a lifetime subscription which will cover the XM radio portion. Although tough to find on their site (which seems stupid) I believe it's $399 for XM Everything and $499 for XM Everything + Best of Sirius (some of the missing channels from Sirius - at that point you basically have most of what XM Sirius has to offer in terms of programming).
- If you get a lifetime subscription it is for the life of the radio (not you) although you can transfer it up to 3 times for a fee of [...] each time.
- Lifetime subscription does not include traffic or weather. Those will still cost you [...] and [...], respectively, each month.
- The lifetime subscription will end up paying for itself in about 2.5 years.

Reception: for the best reception put the radio (puck) on top of your car (roof better) with about a 6-inch radius of metal (your roof or trunk) around it. I actually have mine mounted under the plastic of my dash and it works well with a trade-off that it has more drop-outs than when it was mounted to the roof. If you're driving in the mountains, regardless of whether it's Sirius or XM, you're going to have occassional dropouts. The mountains themselves will get in the way. Like another reviewer I've driven up into the Great Smoky Mountains and I too have frequent dropouts, even with the antennas on top of the car. Generally speaking, except for those conditions it works quite well.

Traffic: The traffic services are great. Really helpful with metro areas. Some areas are better than others but it depends on how the local DOT collects data. In Atlanta the system is very broad and helpful. You can see both incidents (accidents, stalled vehicles, etc.) and traffic flow. In some metro areas you don't get the flow but just the accidents that are reported. Don't fool yourself into thinking that every time an accident happens that it'll immediately popup on the screen. There's still processing time from the accident happening to someone calling it in to it being reported/noticed by the DOT to the data being distributed to the networks. Also, it's certainly possible that an accident could have been cleared and you're right at the spot where it's still being reported.

I recommend, if you know the area, that you have 'Avoid Traffic' turned off on your GPS. The problem is that it will avoid all traffic it knows about which is generally the freeways. So, for example, a freeway may have slowed to 45MPH in a section which may be OK for you getting home but if you have 'Avoid Traffic' turned on then it will route you around that and probably make your trip longer. I find it best to have that feature off and tell the GPS where I'm going every time I get into the car (unless it's literally down the street to the grocery store). The idea is that, yes, you know the way, but if a traffic incident pops up on your route it'll then give you a traffic warning icon/button which you can push and then review what's going on and make the call to have it route you around it or just push on through it (meaning, yeah, something is ahead but it really isn't that big of a deal).

Weather: As I mentioned above, basic weather comes with traffic. You'll get your current conditions and forecasts. If you want extras like maps (radar, road conditions, sky conditions, watches/warnings, etc.) then you first need to make sure you GPS has the ability to display it (not all do) and secondly need to tell the XM rep (you can't subscribe to traffic/weather via the website), that you specifically want the extra weather services.

Stock information is also sent to your GPS via this XM unit. It's included with the traffic service - actually, it may be included with the standard XM radio service. Not sure why the average person needs to know the price of a stock while they're driving but it's there.

If all you really care about is having your GPS have traffic info you're probably better off getting one of the FM Receivers and then subscribing to that for $60/lifetime of the receiver unit (the receiver is in the cable, and that is where your subscription lies). I think that all Garmin GPSs (and Kenwood units with Garmin GPS built-in) that accept the XM Radio module also accept the FM Traffic module. The reverse is not true. Consult your manual to be sure.

It seems as though Garmin is paring down the units that support this XM radio. It used to be the StreetPilot 7200/7500/2730/2820 but they've all been discontinued. There are some Kenwood head units and external GPS modules that support it but the newer Kenwood head units don't. I think they're mainly concentrating on FM Traffic and MSN Direct now.

If you're thinking about getting this and are the type of person to hold onto your gadgets for a long time (like 3+ years) then it's worth getting and paying the lifetime subscription fee. It's a lot of cash up front but it'll keep your monthly bill to [...] and you can just enjoy the XM without thinking about the [...]/month going out the window. If it doesn't work out you can always get a different XM Radio and transfer the subscription.

If you think it's likely that you'd upgrade your GPS in a year or two then I'd say go with the FM traffic receiver or MSN Direct receiver (which also has a lifetime subscription option - I think it's $99).

If you have a GPS with the ability to have traffic displayed and you either live in or frequently go through high traffic areas (check the coverage maps at [...]- follow the links; the maps are different for each service) then I highly recommend getting some kind of traffic data into your GPS.

Poor reception
I purchased this receiver in anticipation of a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway just last week. I knew it would be remote and was looking forward to music and radio (NPR) while riding. The setup with XM took some time. I didn't realize the unit had to be on and outside, not in my garage when the "activation signal" was sent from XM. Nonetheless, once set, the unit was easy to connect to my Garmin Zumo 550. Once on the road however the reception was poor. While riding along the Parkway, any trees would block the signal giving a patchy reception that was so aggravating I turned off the unit. This continued all the way from my home in Georgia, along the Parkway and Skyline Drive into Washington DC. I really can't recommend this unit due to it's poor signal. I tried contacting XM... Surprise, I found "customer no-service". Good luck if you choose to buy this.
Great, but pricey, device
I bought this to go with my Garmin 7200 and have used it about a week. I got it mainly for XM reception, but also for the XM traffic and weather updates. I am still checking out the usefulness of the traffic updates, but so far the XM reception has been great. I don't even have to put it on the dashboard. I keep it on the console by the shift in my Armada and still get all three bars showing full, meaning at maximum, reception. I am pleased about this because it tended to get quite warm sitting on the dash in the sun, and over time heat kills electronics, plus I don't have to have it in plain sight for thieves to notice and I don't have to have wires streaming all over the place.

Keep in mind that one reason for the steep price is due to the fact that the actual XM radio is within this circular unit....it's not just an antenna. The Garmin GPS is merely an interface for the XM receiver that is built into the GXM30 Antenna.

Also keep in mind that it does not work as an antenna for GPS reception, only for the reception of XM radio. So if you are having trouble in that area, this is not going to remedy it. You will need to purchase yet another antenna for the GPS satellite reception side of things.

Lastly, on another note, if you already have an XM radio built into your car radio, but want the XM weather/traffic updates to be pumped through your Garmin GPS, you will have to activate this as a separate radio and pay the additional fee for both an additional XM radio and the XM weather/traffic updates. You might want to give some serious thought as to whether or not you really want that feature that badly.

It does seem to be high quality, but nevertheless I plan to keep it inside my car, which should help it last longer. I do believe, though, that despite what it does it is, in fact, over-priced, so minus one star.

Avoid the Onix 400!!!
After owning this for 6+ months, I have come to the conclusion that it is awful. The software design bases the maps on cells - there are several cell levels and each map within that cell group must be loaded. I.e. pull up city X, it loads L3 maps of city X. Now zoom in, it must load L2 maps, now zoom in again, it must load L1 maps. These map files are not the same even though the maps themselves are the same area and are technically the same map just broken up. (This is complicated, the viewable area is 600x600 pixels. If you take a zoomed in Topographical map and cut it into 600x600 pixels you have an L1 map, then take 9 L1 maps and past them together, zoom out until it is 600x600 pixels and now you have an L2 map. Once more gives you an L3 map) This is potentially a LOT of maps that one must download - which, unless you get the 1 year unlimited subscription from Bushnell, is pay per map not pay per map set but per map cell!! You also cannot change your basemap which shows almost nothing.

Ok, so if the Bushnell map site actually works and you managed to download your files, now you must move them over to the unit. To do this, you must use the Bushnell software and allow it to convert the file again then write it to the very small memory card (128 Mb). Not enough space, upgrade to a max of 2GB (only a SanDisk card will work, I know, I tried many and Tech support said nothing about a specific brand of card!). Your boot time just increased by a lot. I only have 300Mb of map data, it takes 15min to boot up!!!

The construction of the unit is not that great either; functional, but not a good design. One small drop and you can crack it open at the top as it uses tiny tabs not screws to hold it together.

The unit will only work on a windows computer - the Bushnell software only runs on a windows computer. I haven't tried to use WINE to port it under linux, yet...

My unit couldn't keep a lock in a van in central Texas while on a Geology field trip... I don't use XM at all, so I cant comment on that. I also haven't used the weather feature yet, hopefully that will be its redeeming quality to make the purchase worth it.

After ripping this unit apart, I was disappointed to find that it is not hack friendly. The chip is an atmel chip which uses assembly language (which I don't know). The chip (a graphics processor) is commonly used in cameras.

My recommendation - don't buy it.
Interface Issues
I have no idea how well the ONX 400 device functions. I found that the documentation to be poor at best. My major problem has been my inability to download maps to use with it. I have found Bushnell's GPS web site to be clunky, poor quality. You go through the download process and my system hangs and I do not get the maps. When you try to email for help using the website I get an error saying the bushenell email address is bad. So far this product has been a waste of time and money.
Wow this thing is terriable
I bought this on woot for what I thought was a steal... Now I am debating whether I should just cut my losses and trow it right in the garbage.
Do Not Buy this GPS
I recently purchased this in hopes of using the XM weather NexRad feature for hiking and camping trips. After spending over a month and sending it back to Bushnell as it did not work correctly, they claimed it was repaired supposedly. It still did not work as advertised after it was returned. They seemed to blame XM on the problem and after a great deal of research- XM no longer offers the NexRad radar in the basic $9.95 Skywatch package. You have to pay $29.99 a month for it on a more expensive package. Basically I am now out my cost for this worthless unit. Do not buy this for the XM weather features- completely worthless except basic forecast info.
Too difficult to work with
This piece of equipment works fine, but it's like pulling teeth to get maps loaded onto it. You have to buy the aerial or topo maps if you want to use it, because the preloaded maps only have a 1 mile resolution. Any side street or ridge line is not visible on the screen.

I would have to ask Bushnell to stick to what they are good at - binoculars - and steer clear of GPS.

Big Double Thumbs Down on this product.

exellent machine for a not-so-good driver like me
bright screen, clear voice direction, super easy to operate. Love this little machine. If you want a solid navigation system without all those uneccessary frails. Then this machine is for you. I honestly do not see the needs to go for a more expensive model. this machine literally saved my behind a couple of times when I went travelling. I remember I was still in school and had this intervew in kansas for the summer internship ( coincidentally with garmin lol ). I arrived in kansas airport and had to drive a rental car a long way to olathe where the company/hotel was at. It was around 9pm and I was dead tired since I just had a couple of exams and exhausting nights the same week in school. The machine literaly dragged me to the hotel when I literally could not quite open my eyes driving the rental car, and absolutely had no sense of direction where I was suppose to be heading. I just followed its directions while half dreaming... I kissed the machine when I got to the hotel. And I got that summer internship too with garmin thx to it.

Now I moved to Cali after graduation and it still work great after 3 years or so.
Long Time User
I bought the NUVI 360 about 3 years ago, it's an ok unit. Occasionally it will direct you to go left over a median or can't find an address. I bought the updated maps, it took 5 attempts and 4 hours to download with a DSL connection. Customer support had me on hold for 2 hours, i emailed them, it took 5 days to answer the email. The email told me to call. Also customer support is closed on the weekend.
Great portable GPS for personal use.
Great portable GPS for personal use. I love it. I will keep it even though I have GPS in my car because I can still use it during the trip to Hawaii when I am renting the car. Great usage!
LIBERATING
I have enjoyed this GPS sooo much
My independence has leaped...
And Garmin is such a vast network
I am pleased and will welcome
their Phone how logical is that,,
Thanks and Good Luck
Very good lower end model
It is a nice little model. Very useful on road trips. A little dated now but still gets the job done. Better then spending 2k+ on in dash.
