This has never gotten off the ground
I really wanted to like this GPS, I figured I should with the money we paid for it, but that's another story! We bought this for a Europe trip back in 2006 - We didn't get it in time so I won't comment on that part (we bought it for the Europe and US maps). Over the years it has on and off just locked up at times and I have to do a hard reset (use a tiny pin hear the electrical connector) and it starts back up. As with other reviewers I have noticed the battery life degrading and at times it won't even take a full charge.

About a year and a half ago I wanted to update the maps and paid the $99. Well, update didn't work, tried for months with their techincal service (lack of service is better) and finally got my money back as they said they couldn't get it to work - so now I have a POS that I can't even update maps for.

Next came the poor connection between the windshield mount and the unit - yes this unit is heavy and the mount is such a poor design - I don't know who thought of or much less approved it! Well, I called in just after the unit was out of warranty and they said that I could just buy another one ($50)... Hmmmm... I just started using the home base mount instead.

Now my last straw came on a recent trip whereas the unit took me to several wrong addresses (it does this every now and then, long routes, wierd routes), didn't have the POI in it's memory (later found it did, but I didn't define the city - I was using the find POI near me (I was seven miles away) and it still didn't show) - So at that point it almost went against a telephone pole at 35 mph to see how many parts it could go into.

I have really thought about trying another update, a new mount, but when I saw recent reviews that matched my experiences I had to add my two cents. I'm heading to buy a Garmin now and will never recommend a TomTom - Ever.

TomTom Go 910
Prior to owning this unit I had a Magellan Maestro 4000. So I will compare these two GPS Units but focus mainly on the TomTom GPS. Let me discuss the Cons first.

Cons: 1. The unit is kind of heavy and I've experienced some issues with the docking on the windsheild where the weight of the gps and the force of gravity pulls the unit down into a position that does not allow you to see the screen. There is a small allen-screw I guess at some point I have to find a screwdriver to do this job. 2. Oh boy this is a big one! The Glare! During daylight hours depending on the suns position and how the sun enters the vehicle there were times I could NOT see the map on the unit at all! All I could see was blank sun-glared screen and this could be dangerous insofar as it could take your concentration away/off the road. I realized this and I just stopped looking at the gps screen. If there is a sun-glare product for this unit I recommend everyone buy it to avoid that glare issue. 3. There are a bunch of 'voices' to choose from ie., male, female, Brittish & Aussie accents to name a few... This can be overwhelming because you're always thinking if you should change the voice to something else.. the other thing is that some voices are 'human recordings' and will effect audio-warnings from being heard.. if you choose a human voice recording you won't hear warnings in audio.. 4. The distance markers are announced in "Yards" and/or "Meters" sometimes.. I think but am not certain that the distance markers might vary by voice ie., UK voice uses 'meters' so the voice announces distances in meters even though your map is of the USA? I could not determine distances by 'yards' I thought maybe it would also start using "inches" (jus kidding).

Pros: 1. The bluetooth/phone feature is amazing.. say goodbye to driving while using the phone tickets.. the gps searches out your phone and connects to it automatically.. (with some device configuring which is not that difficult). My phone automatically connects and I use the remote control to dial numbers and I'm on the phone.. it's such an awesome feature. 2. The device holds music and you can play podcasts or mp3 files, ebooks, it's awesome and the 20gig internal harddrive is much bigger than one would imagine..

TomTom 910
This is my forth GPS. The mapping has many errors and I've sent corrections back to the company. But they want more money to get updated software. The routing is poor, such as making a left turn, drive up a hill, then turn right to go down the hill whereas the best route is to turn right on level ground then left to get to the same point and on better streets. There are better units at a lower cost.

When it worked, it was great.
I've had this TomTom 910 for 3 years, and I paid $800 plus tax for it. When it worked, it worked very well. I loved the different voices you could choose from, and the speaker quality was excellent. I never used the many extra features it has on it. Just find the address I'm looking for, and get me there the shortest route. That's all I ask.

The problem has been that it worked only about 75% of the time. And it would stop working just for no apparent reason. It would be operating great, then the next time I started up my car, it was dead. I hadn't moved it or the wire or anything. So I would put it in my glove compartment and then a week or so later I would plug it in, and it mysteriously started working again!

This pattern has repeated itself again and again. Finally it has died, and this time, I think for good. The frustrating thing is I didn't drop it or anything.

I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy, and they said to just replace it.
So I'm going with a Nuvi this time. Prices sure have come down.

Was that DumbDumb or TomTom?!
I purchased my DumbDumb 910(a.k.a. TomTom)in Aug. 2006 for way too much money. This is the biggest, clunkiest, most expensive-yet worthless, piece of crap I've ever bought. Do not waste your money on a frustrating piece of junk that has you literally driving in circles, freezes up, does not start up, takes forever to acquire a signal, and just shuts down for no reason at all. I am going to purchase one that costs much less and will be reliable! It would be satisfying to smash this thing.

Great...UNLESS you need CUSTOMER SERVICE...
My TomTom GO 510 worked as promised UNTIL I decided to update my USA_and_Canada map, which cost me $79.95. Then, the nightmare began. The "updated" map DELETED all local roads in my apartment complex, which the "outdated" map INCLUDED. This resulted in my not being able to use the 510's "Time To Destination" function. TomTom's customer service solution--fake the GO 510 out by making it "think" I lived on a main street close to my GPS position. Didn't work. So, I requested an accurate map--BEGGED for an accurate map--FOR NINE repeat NINE MONTHS. Was told, "TomTom doesn't guarantee the accuracy of its maps" (that's a direct quote, mind you). Was also told, "You will have to purchase a new map." Only problem with that is, I already spent $79.95 on the "updated" map which caused the problem to begin with! TomTom WOULD NOT offer me a FREE, ACCURATE replacement map as a customer service gesture. The ordeal with the "updated" map--and TomTom's "MapShare Technology"--has been nothing short of A JOKE AND TOTAL CUSTOMER SERVICE NIGHTMARE. My advice: BUY A DIFFERENT BRAND!! I am currently pursuing a resolution to this issue through the Massachusetts Attorney General's office and if TomTom delivers the high quality of customer service I expect, I'll return and update this review.

Problem Riddled...
Initially a great deal as a refurbished. But... upload the latest updates and "poof" your voice function disappears. This is well documented on the internet groups. Try reloading the original install disc and you get your voice features back, but... utilize Bluetooth or iPod connector and you're back to no voice guidance.

On top of that, the iPod is finicky at best. Most likely why they don't offer it anymore in their current 2009 lineup. Always tells you to connect the player each time you turn off the unit. This requires you to turn the unit off again, unplug the iPod, turn the unit back on, then plug the iPod in AFTER you turn the 510 back on once more. Crazy.

My experience is seriously an issue when considering buying a TomTom again three years later. Were it not for my the built-in MyGig system on my new vehicle, I don't know if I'd buy another one. As is, I'm relegating this 510 to the carry-on bag for business trips.

Breaks after 1.5 years of service
I bought this product about 1.5 years ago. Until a few weeks ago things were OK. Now each time after selecting the destination, it freezes when I accept the caclulations.

TomTom helpdesk on the other hand has me go through software troubleshooting and I had to call them back 8 times and yell and them before they acknowledged their mistakes. They will send a replacement unit, but sufice it to say that I am done with this brand.

I really thought this gps was easy to set up as well as step by step directions on any location I entered. The price was right and I loved the bigger fonts on the screen.

TomTom saved my sanity!
Okay, so I am the woman that is always lost. I have lived in the same area my whole life, but if I get turned around, I am hopeless. I started a new job about a year ago where I would be seeing clients all over Los Angeles County, and I knew I was in trouble. I bought a TomTom, and I can't express how much of a stress relief it has been! I have driven many many places, and it has only been wrong (slightly, and I quickly figured out the problem) twice. I spent a long time researching which GPS to purchase, and I am definitly happy with TomTom. No more Mapquest when I need to go somewhere, I can just hop in my car, input the address, and off I go!

Some of the inputing takes getting use to - i.e. you put the city name first, then the street name, then the number. My only complaint is that you usually have to know if the street is North/South etc. and I forget to ask. You can also download new maps, cool voices, and other features from the website. It has tons of Point of Interests, so I can even go places if I know the name of the venue but not the address. Directions are given with plenty of advance notice, and even includes your next turn so you know which lane to turn into (Turn Right, then Turn Left). TomTom does not tell you the street name to turn onto - only the distance to go, but it has it on the screen.

I don't have a cell phone, so I can't tell you about the bluetooth, or the internet features, like live traffic, but overall, I love my TomTom!!

Wish I'd bought a Garmin
I am about to embark on my second struggle with TomTom customer support because my second unit just failed. Getting the first one replaced was a nightmare. It's difficult to communicate with support, they respond slowly and their products are unreliable.

Great Unit; Great Customer Service
We've used our GO 700, Gabby, extensively for about 12 months traveling throughout the upper midwest not only for finding backroad routes but motels and restaurants as well. We even hauled her to Washington, DC to help us navigate the labyrinth of roads to find the stuff we wanted to see. It's exceedingly easy to use and the features on their PC software, TomTom Home, make it a simple task to maintain currency of software, maps, POIs, etc. It even includes a feature to backup and restore your GO! And operate your GO from your PC!

Our GO 700 broke today and I called TomTom Customer Service. I has already done the diagnostics prescribed on their website and getting an RMA number and instructions to facilitate an exchange took less than 30 minutes and both calls were people answered by the third ring. Based on other comments here, I think TomTom has dramatically improved their customer support.

The BlueTooth technology is way cool! Say Gabby finds a motel we want to stay at for the night. She displays the address and phone number and will even place the call from our cell phone if we want her to!

Even with maintaining software currency, Gabby has her quirks. For instance, you pull into a town and are jonesin' for Subway. Unless its nearby, Gabby won't find it. There's no facility I've found for keying in a particular restaurant. We were entitled to one map update after buying Gabby and it'd be nice if they included a one year map subscription update given how quickly things change and the lead time that must be required to get it on the Gabby map.

Latest version???
I received a refund after ordering/receiving/returning two TomTom GO 700 as neither was the latest version. It would have cost me additional money to download updates on my new purchase.
The company demonstrated prompt, efficient and courteous customer service.

DO NOT BUY TOM TOM!!!!
Well...this product looks great, but the love affair ended there. I was very shocked when I recently bought this unit and found out that the maps are very, very, VERY outdated. It seems as if they are from around 1990 as so many highway updates are not included. Subsequently, the device is more or less useless as every time it hits a new stretch of road or new on-ramp, it gets "lost" and stops giving directions.

I contacted Tom Tom and even though they have newer maps and that they admitted that the maps in this piece of garbage are outdated--they had the audacity to tell me I had to purchase a new set of maps for $110.

So, make sure you add $100 to trhe purchase price, because it will be completely useless out of the box!!

I am a professional who drives daily over a 3 state region and will buy a Garmin and surely encourage you do the same!!!

Tom Tom GO 700 Portable Navigation System review
This product has proven to be just what the advertisment say it is. I have used it so far to travel from Maine to Boston, Maine to Atlanta, GA, Maine to Maxwell AFB, AL and all over Maine. I have been very impressed at how easy it is to set up and use. Everything you said would, came with the unit.

I will be buying another one in the near future as my wife needs it to keep from getting lost on long trips. Thank you.
