It is total BS. I know for a fact. I wrote it.

I was at his message board and a lot of people were posting negative things about JP which were all being deleted seconds later, including my own.

I then decided to write the outrageous nonsense you see above. Not only was it not deleted, it was elevated to the absolute most premiere area of the site.

I have confronted JP on this many times about him knowingly posting a false story. He knows the testimonial is bologna but he refuses to take it down.

From what I've seen of his products, his central advice is to change tables when you are on a losing streak, the DISCIPLINE he keeps harping on.

His self testimonial "I may not win much but I don't lose much either". This is the most positive thing I have ever heard him say in reference to his own track record.

Not really much of an endorsement if you ask me.

Seriously, I would bet with no fear of losing, that JP's record is of a slow gradual losing of money. Sometimes up for a while, usually down. The overall situation a constant descent.

I don't know how he got so well known to be able to write and sell his useless products but that is his true winfall.

I got this for $3.20. I just started playing Texas Hold Em and really enjoyed it (The game not this dvd). This was cheap enough in a discount store where I also get an additional discount.

At the time I was entirely unfamiliar with JP but since have got to know about him quite well.

The dvd basically is a "for dummies" explanation of HOW TO PLAY Texas Hold em. There is very little strategy given. Basically he advices to walk away when on a losing streak. I have since found out this is his central advice for every one of his very prolific set of products.

As for some of his strategy on best hole cards, he has it pretty much correct but some are out of correct order. He freely admits he doesn't know the mathematical statistics. So basically he assigned a dogmatic ranking of the hole cards that pretty much conforms to statistics but where there is doubt, JP prefers to use his hunches and experience instead of bothering with figuring it out mathematically.

I am not sure why an odds calculator is included since John Patrick tells he to not waste your time on finding out statistical odds to make decisions.

Seriously, John Patrick IS NOT a good gambler. As evidenced by his many writings he is a poor gambler at best. He has barely progressed from novice status.

I don't know how he got well known but clearly if we were able to see his tax returns, the income would be from products not from gambling.

On this dvd JP claims to be very accessible at his website and it actually is an absolutely valid claim. I have been there many times and (positive) messages addressed to him will be answered by him usually within minutes. He also is his own monitor and every time I have been there he is busy deleting criticism.

JP does seems to be cracking up from the stress of his website's message board criticism.

One thing JP is known for doing now and then is responding to criticism by claiming to have done the posters wife and that he left her a $5.00 tip for the effort "which should have been more than sufficient". Then JP will delete any follow-up messages giving himself the last word.

Steven L. Brecher, Beating the Races with a Computer (Software Supply, 1980)

There are few books on handicapping that can be considered indispensable. It's likely that, a quarter of a century after its original publication, Steven Brecher's Beating the Races with a computer is no longer on that list. After all, the handicapping game has changed quite a lot in the ensuing twenty-five years. However, Brecher's means, methods, and processes are just as valid as they were then; the reader just has to change a few things in their application.

Brecher's book came out not long after Bill Quirin's groundbreaking Winning at the Races, and what Brecher does here is, to some extent, simply revise and extend the excellent work Quirin did. History has, of course, borne out Brecher's prediction that computer processor power would continue to come down in price (and his breathless exclamation that someday in the future, the racing fan would be able to take the whole database to the track came true with the advent of the laptop), and thus this book, instead of languishing in its present obscurity, would seem to be even more important to the do-it-yourself punter. Brecher describes ho to set up your own system for computerized handicapping, including a brief discussion of multiple regression analysis and how to set up a database, and then shows you his own findings. Where the present-day reader will find the most value in this book is in Brecher's descriptions of how the statistics work; it's pretty easy to read between the lines and figure out how most of the automation was done. And, of course, these days it doesn't require a minicomputer that costs "about as much as a Chevrolet;" your old 486 gathering dust on the shelf can handle this stuff easily.

If you're a handicapper who dabbles in programming your own handicapping software, this book will be absolutely invaluable. Do what you need to do to hunt down a copy. **** ½

The ability of the Thoroughbred trainer and capitalizing on his or her training strengths and weaknesses has always been one of the most important handicapping factors. In today's modern betting era where the competition is stiff and various handicapping information is widely accessible, evaluating trainer angles is even more important for successful play. Should have been called Trainer Angles: An Advertisement for Formulator 4.1.
Dean Keppler, Trainer Angles: Maximizing Profits Using Formulator and Advanced Trainer Stats (DRF Press, 2006)

When I was disappointed in Lauren Stich's book for DRF Press, something I never thought could possibly happen (Stich's articles have been a mainstay of my handicapping reading since my days on @derby some fifteen years ago), I started forming a hypothesis that recent DRF Press releases are less workable handicapping manuals than advertisements for various DRF products. Dean Keppler's Trainer Angles has done nothing whatsoever to disabuse me of this notion; in fact, it provides solid evidence of that, as the book never masks the fact that it's an extended advertisement for Formulator 4.1. If you've never taken the time to study DRF's trainer stats in detail (in Formulator; the ones that are actually reported in the DRF are often worse than useless), you might find a few tidbits of use here, but most of it is common sense, and has been since Formulator introduced trainer stats a number of years ago. For the DRF Press completist only. **

not much to it
This book is mainly something to use with Formulator software, to give you some tips on what to look for. However, you don't really need the book to use the software. In fact, in all of the lists in the book of the top trainers, if you look for updated information you'll find that their hot streaks in those categories haven't continued. So, the book won't do you much good unless you have no creativity to figure out how to use Formulator. However, Formulator itself can still work for you, since you can find out what trainers are doing RIGHT NOW and what is working. So, I'd take a pass on the book but check out the software (or similar software from other companies).

Formulator PitchThe
The title is inappropriate. The treatise focuses entirely on the use of DRF's Formulator for analyzing trainer angles. If you do not have or do not desire to use Formulator, the material is useless.

Going Beyond The Basic Facts To Get An Edge
Go to any track and you'll overhear the regulars in the stands discussing the top trainers, typically through a trainer/jockey angle, as certain combinations seem to "always" get a decent percentage of victories.

But from such a raw statistic or simple observation can yield information that may give any handicapper an advantage in making plays to turn a profit at the track.

Author Dean Keppler - in a Daily Racing Form publication - shows how to research a variety of trainer angles through the DRF's Formulator software and other available handicapping material. By delving into such angles as runners going from turf-to-dirt, dirt-to-turf, first time on Lasix and layoffs for specific time periods, the handicapper may uncover available, but little known facts, on the strengths or weaknesses of trainers.

For those who do not want to invest in the software, there are a variety of lists that may be used and tips on how to go beyond the basic facts in the racing forms at local tracks.

Trainer Angles is part of an ongoing series of DRF handicapping books, but this volume may not be for beginners. It is an essential read for those who have an interest in seriously playing the races and want to take the time to do real research in this important - but oftentimes overlooked - area.
