Very Informative Book
For someone interested in boating, but no idea where to start, this is the perfect book. It is well organized, well written and provides all the details a beginning boater needs to know. I am especially happy with the sections on maintaining your boat and boating etiquette. Bottom Line: a good collection of tips to make boating fun and keep new boaters from looking like idiots on and around the water.

Great overview of boating
I really enjoyed this book. I didn't really know what the style of my boat was considered, but after reading this, I learned that I own a Walkaround, or express boat. That alone was worth the price of the book.

This book really covers everything well in a very readable format.

Just about every topic that I wanted to learn something more about was in this book.

It's no replacement for Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship, which is the definitive tome for boating. But if you need more of an intro to boating, this book is highly recommended.

A must have
This book covers just about everything everyone should know before going boating, much more in depth than the Boaters Safety Course and can be kept as a reference book on board

A Must Read for Beginners
This is the perfect book for a boating newbie. It is formatted great, covering a good range of topics as they relate to piloting your vessel. The illustrations and writing really do a good job of getting the concepts across. Along with Chapman's Seamanship, it's a must-have in any boater's library.

Great Book and Price
Book is a treasure trove of information for new and experienced boaters. It is also for the foundation for two boater education classes. Buying the book here allowed me to read about the material prior to taking the USCGA training class. This improved my learning during class, and it lowered the cost of my class since I already had the book.

Helpful and a good read!
Once again R. Sweet has put together an excellent and helpful book. I found it to be interesting and easy to read. I highly recomend it.

Great book
This book covers a lot of material which is essential for a new boat owner also a good review for old timer. Easy reading whit good photo illustraion. I found it very helpful for a power boat owner. You really need to need most everything that is covered in this book.

Good book, but there's some things you need to know ahead of time.
The book's common sense style and instructions are very well done, but there are a few things you need to know before you purchase. For starters, there are only fully detailed plans for a small number of the 15 boats - for all the others, you'll only get very scaled down images of the plans (The author advocates that you go purchase the full plans online from his website). I thought that was a bit of bad advertisement in regard to the book's title and blurb, but with what content and plans it does have, I wouldn't have hesitated buying it anyway. Payson is fairly easy to understand and explains most things thoroughly; I believe this book will get you started on the journey of building your own boats, but you should look for other resources if you're really serious about getting into it in depth - that's not to say you shouldn't buy this book because it's great, but know the book really only covers basics as far as tools & their use, useful tips, and materials.

Boat book review.
This is a well written book that explains evrything you need to know to build
a bunch of small boats. Having been building boats since I was 11 years old (long time ago),
I still like building small boats. This book makes it quite easy to build several small boats.
My current interest is a small sailboat, and that is handled nicely in the book.

Another Dynamite book
Mr. Payson clearly shows how to build a very good selection of Bolger-designed boats for the beginning builder to the more advanced. The building methods are straightforward and the explanations very clear. The author is a very honest person who is willing to admit his past errors. That information is valuable to the builder who can avoid those mistakes and not feel badly about his own faux pas. For example, Dynamite is now using water base boat paints instead of oil paints he strongly recommended in earlier writings. Dynamite provides an excellent discussion of materials including various types of plywood. One might assume that the expensive marine plywood is the only suitable product, but that is not necessarily the case.

I like plywood and the tape and glue method a lot. The last boat I built was a skin on frame. I built that boat for lightness but by the time I was done it weighted as much as the Rubens Nymph and is nowhere near as useful.

He's the Man
This guy has been in boats from birth; he knows whereof he speaks. Instant boatbuilding with Dynamite Payson : the fastest, easiest way to build 15 boats for power, sail, oar, and paddle has just what it says, plans with directions for 15 different boats, all from the board of the inimitable Phil Bolger.

Great View
I have the first book as well, I wanted the plans for the Grande Diablo. I actually bought the plans for the Diable about a year ago. I collect plans that look like great boats, who knows after the two I have going now, maybe I will finally build the Diablo. Get the books now, then you can decide when to build. The one thing that really stinks is finding a boat plan and then find out you cant get the plans. I like the fact that there a variety of boats as well, who knows as I get older, maybe I may want a sailboat.... just kidding, but I really feel that my choices do change, the plans in this book are a great way to look into the building process for the ones I have not tried and see if its something I want to do.
Highly recommend any book by this author.

Great Durable Inverter
I bought this back in February 2006 in a local store but I'm glad to see they're still for sale. I've used it on every long trip I've taken since then and it has earned its spot in my console. I can't remember what I paid for it but $100 would still be a good value. Its great for camping and other situations where power isn't guaranteed. I've run and charged two laptops simultaneously off it with no problems. Friends and family ask where they can get one and I'm glad I can direct them here. Two issues are the fan noise is a bit loud and you can get feedback through the stereo when charging certain devices.

400 Watt Invertor
This invertor works very well. It replaced a burned out invertor I have on a mobile emergency cart-based power backup. I live in the Sierra foothills where PG&E power outages are more frequent than normal. The cart has a 12v deep-cycle battery and two 400 watt invertors mounted on it. It easily runs a couple of CFL lamps and a fan for several hours.

I have a 5000 watt gas generator, but that is too much work for short duration outages and the mobile cart fills the need just fine without all the noise.

Convenient and Easy to Use
I bought the Vector MAXX 400 watt inverter because it was about the highest wattage inverter available that still plugged into the cigarette lighter and I am not displeased. The unit comes with both a cigarette lighter cord and alligator clips which can be attached directly to the battery. These are color coded and connected to the unit by the user. I just leave the cigarette lighter cord attached as it still fits in the convenient hard-shell carrying case in that configuration. The unit has audio alarm for low power, a circuit breaker, and a fan which is not too loud.

I found it easy to use - just hook up the cables, plug it in and run my stuff. I mostly use this to power a laptop running navigation software or recharge a cell phone and it works great. (I probably do not need this much power for these tasks but you never know when you will need the extra juice for other usage.) It powered the laptop on a 12 hour drive from Chicago to D.C. with no problems. I do use a surge suppressor for the laptop but that is just me and to the best of my knowledge, the Vector MAXX has never triggered the surge suppressor.

My only (mild) complaint is that the cords are a little short. Overall, I find it easy to use and pretty handy to have around. I recommend it.

Not water tight
I had to create a seal around the lid with latex cauk to make this thing water tight.

MWS
I own both the MK (Minn Kota) pwr station and the UM (Unified Marine) 50090681 pwr station, therefore I'm writing this for both. Luckily I purchased the UM to hold my back up battery. If quality is worth the cost to you then the Minn Kota is the choice. I've had the MK pwr station on a few trips so far with no problems.

Quick comparison: MK box container is well made and transports my heavier 27 battery with no problems, strap is well made. Now for the UM, placed my lighter 24 battery and proceeded to lift box by the handle - handle came up but the box remained on the floor. Unbelievable...quick fix drilled some screws through to secure the handle, not sure how long this will last. Strap hasn't broke yet, but my confidence is very low that it will make it out of the garage for the 2nd trip.

Power meter: MK works well with good quality readings on charge. UM, not sure why they bothered to even place this on the box...cheap/unless. Only reflect a full charge when you have it plugged to the charger, and that's the only time you can trust what it reads.

Power lugs are fine on both, with the MK still being better quality.

Power accessory have not used yet so can not provide any feedback.

As stated above I only got the UM for my back up battery case so not overly disappointed, it works for my application, it's priced low, has a circuit breaker and pwr lugs work fine, so I'll give it a 2 star rating. However, if your getting this as your primary box for your trolling motor with needs of a higher quality box with a power meter that works, it's best to spend the extra money on better box.

Would be great if batter meter worked properly
This is great unit at a great price, except the battery meter does not work properly. Even after fully charging the battery the meter shows 1/3 full and if you use the battery even the slightest is shows needs to be recharged. I measured the voltage and 12.6 volts or less shows recharge, and you don't get to full unless a battery charger is attached and are at 13.8 volts or higher. So other than this minor issue it works great.

Good but could be better
I use this to hold my primary battery that drives a trolling motor on my 10' Walker Bay.

Pros:
* Nice external power hookups
* Plenty of room for my Group: 27 size battery and a Minn Kota circuit breaker I installed inside
* Side handles (for heavy batteries)

Cons:
* The battery charge indicator tends to show less charge than the actual charge (not to bad)
* Case and strap buckle are too lightweight to carry my 70 lbs. battery by the handle
* The strap buckle is already cracked and needs to be much stronger
* Car lighter style plug is not secure enough for accessories to stay connected

Al in all I am happy with my purchase but that is mainly because I have not found a better unit that has these features.

Not a very good design.
The plastic buckle of the belt broke the very first day. A typical battery weighs 30-40 pounds. The buclke is made up of cheap plastic that cannot survive the weight.

Nostalgic but not very useful...
I bought this book hoping for some insight that might be useful for my career. I like and often use Gerr's "Element's of Boat Strength", but found surprisingly little useful information here. If you are a layman or one of the "nautically obsessed", you may enjoy it, though. But, if you want bare-bones useful info for building, get "Elements of Boat Strength"...

A tremendous held if you are actually designing a boat
I am starting construction of a 40ft motorsailer of my own design. Daves book was a major help in the overall principles and the nut and bolt details such as propeller size and pitch, shaft size, rigging strength, and almost every other consideration in the design. I am ordering his "Boat Systems Mechanical Handbook..."to fill in more of the design.

This is my second copy of this book...
My first copy of this book is swimming with the fishes... I had to get another copy... This book is a must have for anybody that wants to go beyond just "sailing" and understand why the sails sail or why the rudder or keel do what they do. Plus Dave Gerr has a great sense of humor...

For me - a treasure trove
I have always had a fondness for boats. My every attempt to learn more about them was unsatisfying. Magazines, sales literature, or attending boat shows failed to supply the information I yearned to know. I wanted to understand boats, not just know about them.

Dave Kerr gets to the heart of the matter in this volume. While not containing all one might want to know about why certain boats function they way they do, how they are built, and what the individual reader should be looking for in selecting or designing a boat, this book goes a long way, and makes it easy to understand what the next step would be in pursuing a particular boat subject-matter more thorougly.

Kerr's prose is eminently readable - he even includes several semi-fictional antecdotes to bread up the tedium of boat-facts.

A must have book!
This book, although an informational, reference book, is hard to put down! It is one of those books that is a "must have" and should be on every boat owners book shelf.

Great for boat rookies!
If you're brand new to boats and the only thing you know about them is that they're suppose to float, then you're gonna need a book like this one to help give you a good foundation on the systems, parts, and many little things that a good boater should know. I found the pics, diagrams, and general information quite helpful.

A "Must Read" for Power Boat Buyers
It's hard to find disinterested reviews of boats. The authors seem to find the good points [and almost any boat has some] to write about, leaving you to figure out what the bad points are by exclusion.

Any boat is a compromise, and designed to do one sort of job really well. The trick in selecting the right boat for your purposes is accurately listing just what it is that you want the boat to do. This book is predicated on the idea that you want a boat to take several people in comfort and safety for several days or longer through potentially challenging waters -- the coast of British Columbia, for example.

If that's the case, this may be your book. It discusses each of the many systems on board and suggests which alternatives are most likely to meet your needs. I learned a lot from it when we were looking at trawlers last year -- and would recommend it without reservation to someone in a similar position.
