compact, easy to use
I bought this as a backup for a couple of older computers, one of which was running win2k. Even though the documentation said this external hard drive would not work with win2k it worked anyway. Pleased about that.
It is quiet, doesn't get hot and is very easy to use. It is also very compact, not much bigger than a flash drive, but it works just like a flash drive. This is the 500gb unit, not the smaller one.
A couple of minor complaints, the white light indicating the unit is plugged in is way too bright. The USB cable that comes with this unit is too short, only about 18 inches long.
Easy and reliable
This HD was extremely easy to use. You plug the USB into your computer and without installing any additional software, you can begin dragging/dropping files onto it. No AC power cord makes it very portable as well. Fits in back pocket.
Western Digital Elements 640GB Portable Hard Drive contains WD6400BEVT Blue Scorpio
The Western Digital Elements 640GB Portable Hard Drive (WDBAAR6400ABK-NESN) contains a WD6400BEVT Blue Scorpio drive inside. It is the exact same drive as the 640GB Western Digital Passport drives.
Specs:
640GB
5400 RPM
8 MB cache
2.5" for laptops or powerless USB enclosures
9.5mm height fits all common laptops
(Model: WD6400BEVT, Scorpio Blue Drive)
Note: This is the largest 9.5mm height drives Western Digital offers. The fastest 9.5mm drives WD offers are the Scorpio Black series (7200 RPM/16 MB cache), and they only go up to 320GB.
There are videos on [...]/new-thinkpad-hard-drive for opening up a Passport and upgrading laptops. Elements is even easier to pop open than Passports. I just did this a few days ago. The back is snapfitted, so just apply pressure to the top on the corners to pop out the snaps. Then once you have the back removed, you apply pressure to the center of the top to push out the carrier. The drive sits neatly inside a metal enclosure and attaches to a USB connector board. You don't need any tools, except maybe a small flathead screwdriver to shimmy the USB connector off.
Works great!
I bought this drive to be a backup media for my Debian Linux (Lenny) laptop. Although WD does not officially support Linux, it works great. To get the drive to work in Linux, I just had to reformat it to use ext3 (or any other Linux-supported file system.) I setup sbackup (I think that's the one I used) to backup on a schedule. Now all I have to do is leave the drive connected overnight, and Debian auto-magically backs up the entire OS. I have successfully used the restore feature, so I know that the whole WD-Linux-ext3 scenario works as expected.
Plug-n-play HD, affordable, looks great and is very small!
My first impression of this HD was "wow, I didn't know it was this small". It looks great and is easy to move around. You can just plug it in and it will start working. So far, the only problems it has given me is that it wasn't displaying one time when I plugged it in but I highly think it may have been my computer's USB just being stubborn. I took it out and plugged it back in and it started working perfectly well. If you really need something bigger, you can get the same one but 1 TB instead of 500 GB for about $20 more.

Seegate FreeAgent Go 500GB
I bought the Seagate Free Agent Go approximately a month ago. It works great. The actual setup took less then 10 minutes,it was basically plug and play. I would recommend this unit to everyone.
not reliable backup
The included "automatic backup" software doesn't work after a few days of use. The list of "exceptions" - files skipped during the backup routine - was extensive, running into the hundreds. These files had previously been read without problem; the first dozen or so backups went smoothly enough. Slow, but everything was read and backed up. But for no apparent reason (I had not used recovery or anything like that, hadn't installed any new programs or peripherals) the backup feature no longer worked correctly. So, I reformatted the drive, removed the software, and now it's just an external (and portable) hard drive. Nothing more, nothing less!!
Love these free agents!
I have a few of these. 250GB, 300GB and recently just purchased the 1TB.
Warning on the 1TB it took a few days to format out of the box. the third day my computer was shut down and when I rebooted the drive said it needed to be formated. I finially opted for the quick format which took about a few seconds. I have not put anything on it yet. I am sure it will work as well as my others, only one usb to power and use it. I love these things. I am currently loading my dvd's on them to play on my netbooks which do not have the optical drives for dvds.
good product, good sale
I enjoy this product, and it works just great. Handy, compact, and durable, hasn't been tested from a drop or water damage yet, but it seems to be perfect.
Good drive for your media library
I purchased this 1TB drive, and put a few video files on it as a test, and plugged it into my Samsung 52" lcd (model ln52B630). it played back flawlessly!!!. You couldn't tell if it was USB or HDMI, and it was USB. I gave this 3 stars because I did not like the bloatware that is included with this drive, but if you want the backup options included I guess they are fine. I got the free dock, which I hooked up to the TV. The drive seems solid and well built.

I am Using it with My Mac Computers As Temporary Storage of Very Large Files
This is an excellent small, compact, light-weight 1TB HD. I am finding it most useful in temporary storage of files and also for such storage of photos/video and other such files when on vacations/travel and such. It, obviously has a lot of other uses; however, I purchased it mainly for temporary storage of extremely large files with my Mac computer and MacBook computers, and I am extremely satisfied with this HD for this use.
VCD gone!, Install a driver?, Died in 24 hours.
I purchased this drive in March 2010. I followed WD's instructions for removing the virtual CD (VCD): 1) update the firmware, 2) run software to disable the VCD. After that, the VCD was gone (it was just hidden). However, whenever I inserted the drive into a machine, every version of Windows I inserted it into would pop up a dialog asking for the location of the driver for the new hardware. I would click cancel and I could access the drive like any USB drive. I do not know what the driver would have supported. I repartitioned the drive and formatted it (writing zeros to every sector). The next day, the format was complete.
I used this drive to copy several large files from numerous systems for backup. About 6 hours into the day, I had copied a total of about 200GB onto the drive from about 5 systems. Then the drive stopped responding. It started making that clicking noise. I assume the untimely death is an unfortunate fluke. I do not hold that against WD. However, the driver pop-up is a real turn off for me.
Initial Feedback
Several years ago I bought the 80GB WD Passport. It was the largest offering at the time, and essentially the same price, a little over $200. In comparison this 1TB WD Passport is also the largest offered. No buyers remorse in either situation - getting something that lasts years and has the maximum storage available has always worked out. The dimensions of this drive as well as the fit and finish are very attractive. Further, the new cable has a spring loaded connector - the old one would tend to fall out when you moved the wire/laptop/drive too far. The backup software is apparently working, quickly and in the background. Of course you never know how good your backup is until after you need it.
This whole product line has been unreliable
I had some trouble with their previous products in this line, along the lines of premature failures and having to reformat the disks every few months.
I somehow thought that the new product would overcome this. However, after three months with the one terabyte device it, too, won't connect to either of two Windows computers where I have the drivers install. Lights blink and their special driver software flickers as if it is going to recognize the drive and then doesn't. LIghts continue to blink.
Even if it were working I would not recommend it due to the hokey interface software. I was just looking for a simple USB disk that I could plug in and use. Instead I got this thing that originally looks like a read-only optical disk. After you let it self install there is a WD icon in your the notificztion area of your system tray forever, whether or not the disk is installed. When you plug it in the software grabs it and you have to fight with it to keep it from initiating an automatic backup. Eventutally you can just use it as a connected drive, but you have to go through the same drill the next time you plug it in.
It's great that they have so much storage in such a small package. It would be greater if the software weren't so poorly designed and the hardware lasted more than a few months of carrying it on business travel.
I cannot recommend this product to anyone and am hoping to get my money back from Amazon.
Plenty of space in a small package
This is a large drive in a small package, really useful for transporting files and backup.
I ordered from amazon, and the drive arrived with the improved USB cable (New cable part number: 4064-705074-000Old cable p/n: 4064-705045-000 The number is located on the back of the "USB 2.0" sticker on the cable)
It's running on my macbook; I bought the windows version, so I had to reformat with disk utility, took a few minutes.
The Mac software update is tricky to find on the WD site - it's at
[...]
Haven't installed the SmartWare software yet, so I can't honestly comment on it; it seems useful if you travel with the drive, and need the security.

As Promised & a bit more
Price, compatibility & reliability were the major objectives met in this purchase. Pleasant bonuses included a comprehensive Iomega web site, surprising speed for an external drive, solid operation on a PC using only 1 USB port and free, competent basic software.
Sleek, small but requires two USB ports
This iomega hard drive (320G)is one of the smallest external hard drives I have seen. It has a sleek aluminium case and resembles a stylish cigarette case. It requires two free USB ports on the computer (presumably one is for charging the unit and the other is to transfer data). My laptop instantly recognized the drive and labelled it as "iomega hard drive". It made no noise and did not get warm while it backed up my data.
Pretty good for a toy drive
Small, with attractive metal case. Doesn't run hot, little noise. The cord has two usb plugs, but I've never needed more than one. But I find using both plugs speeds up the write time somewhat. Yes, the other end of the cord that plugs into the drive is flimsy, so take care to completely seat it.
The write speed is very slow, but read speed seems to be reasonable.
My main concern is dropping it. If you take it on the road, you will want a case. The top and bottom sides of the metal case are striated, but the sides where one would normally pick it up, are smooth, not helping your fingers grasp it.
Overall, a reasonably good drive for a 2.5.
The cable won't be an issue for most users
In these reviews, the cable provided with this disk drive seems to be the biggest source of problems. Most folks can avoid using this cable though.
Most computers don't need the specialized double-plug cable that ships with this disk drive. So you can substitute any normal mini-USB cable that you have on hand. The official USB specification only requires your computer to supply a small amount of power through each USB port. So manufacturers of disk drives and DVD drives use these specialized cables to draw power from two USB ports. But in fact, most computers supply more power than the specification requires. In most cases, the special cable is unnecessary. Personally, I never use these special cables.
I like the looks of this drive, except for the plastic end piece. To me, it looks significantly worse than the main aluminum housing, which I like.
The drive is silent and cool running. I am using it for backing up my notebook computer and I am getting good results so far.
Well Constructed, Confusing Cable Configuration
External drives are a dime a dozen these days, so manufacturers are frequently relying upon the 'value adds' such as innovative casing and software to make their products stand out.
This Iomega drive is an excellent and affordable choice that is well constructed for on-the-go computing. The brushed aluminum case is attractive but also strong enough to prevent getting crushed or cracked in a bag. Speeds are reasonable although USB 2.0 is beginning to feel slightly limited now that that 3.0 interfaces and devices are making their way to market.
I do have two minor gripes: The first is there is no love for Mac users included on the drive. It's formatted for NTFS and there's no Mac software to install. It's easy enough to get working by loading disk utility and formatting it for the Mac, but it will look a little bare until you do go through the Mac formatting process.
The second is the confusing cable configuration. The drive comes with a dual USB interface, which will prompt many unsuspecting users to give up two USB ports. In my limited testing on two Macs the second USB connection is not needed and the drive will work fine occupying just one port. I suppose Iomega included this functionality for those with extremely old or underpowered hardware, but it will nevertheless prompt many to occupy the additional port unnecessarily.
Still, these issues are definitely not dealbreakers. The cost and build quality of this product makes it my new choice for an inexpensive external hard drive.

Easty To Use Quality Backup Protection
I just received my Liquid Blue Toshiba 500 GB HD. Tech support was very helpful in helping me reformat the drive to NTFS (it comes formatted with FAT32). My 1st backup with FAT32 took 4 1/2 hours to backup just over 26 gbytes for an approximate average speed of 1.6 mbytes/sec. After the reformat, it did the same backup at about 5.8 mbytes/sec. A big improvement, but essentially the same as my 4-year old Seagate 40 GB drive it is replacing. I would have thought hard drive write speeds would have increased more in that time, but it seems the emphasis has been driving down costs and increasing storage capacity. Fair enough. The short USB 2.0 cable could also be a bit longer, guys.
The drive works fine and for someone doing periodic backups during the day or overnight where time is not of the essence, I suspect the speed will be sufficient. I note that the backup speeds were all over the lot: at times, it dropped to 0.3 mbytes/sec and other times ramped up to 20 mbytes/sec. Most of the time it spent in the 4-7 mbyte/sec range. If Toshiba can figure out a way to maintain the speed in the 10-12 mbyte/sec area, this would be one kick-ass backup. FWIW, I am running a 2004 Pentium 4 with a 3 ghtz CPU and 1 gbyte of RAM so newer machines may run this drive faster. The user manual is among the worst I've seen -- it basically isn't even a user manual, just some product descriptions and terminology definitions. A few paragraphs on how the Toshiba drive can be used most efficiently would have been appreciated along with tech specifications so you can research how your specific hardware and software can work best with the drive.
The 3-year warranty is a great feature for folks who backup daily or very frequntly. These drives seem to fail for people doing heavy backups on a daily or near-daily basis. If you are like me and don't have essential add-ons to your PC except every few weeks, then less frequent backing up will probably extend whatever lifespan this drive (and others) have.
All-in-all, a quality backup with plenty of storage space in an aesthetically pleasing case style.
Pretty Good!
I've had this hard drive for a couple months now and I love it. I bought it when my internal hard drive in my desktop started to go out. It was meant to be a backup of all my docs and music, but now I just use it as a full time hard drive. Its quick simple. I've had no problems. The only thing was when I first connected it to my computer, I had a USB hub that was connected to the back of my tower. I connected it to the hub and I kept getting an error on my computer. All I had to do was connect it directly to the tower. Turns out since its USB powered, the hub doesn't provide enough power to run the HDD. But no worries. Its still a great device. Price was very good for 500gb. Its small and easy to take with me when I go somewhere with my laptop. Definitely recommend!
Good value for a good price.
A snap to install. Light weight and easily portable. Price was good and delivery quick.
Toshiba Portable Hard Drive is great.
I am relatively technology challenged, so this self-contained portable hard drive is perfect for me. Just plugged it in and it does all the rest.
Toshiba 640 GB USB 2.0 Portable HD
I LOVE this little external hard drive! It's low-profile, small and light, and has little rubber feet to keep it in place. It has a nice mini-USB cord that's only about 6", which is perfect for toting around w/o a lot of extra bulk and weight. Buy the suggested Case Logic case for it and you can take it everywhere, all the time. Very happy with my purchases.

Lots of interfaces- Cables Included!
The reason why to buy this drive is if you want to use Firewire 800- a much faster interface than USB 2.0. Macs come with firewire built in, and this way it doesn't occupy one of your USB ports. So, get this if you've got a mac or anything with firewire, instead of the less expensive 1Tb drives that only have USB 2.0. Or, if you want to stack them- that works too.
It was easy to hook up and works seamlessly with Apple's "time machine" backup software. I've only had it for 2 months, so I can't comment on long term reliability, but it has a sturdy aluminum case, runs fairly cool, an eerie blue light and lots of interfaces! It seems to me that no matter what drive you research, they all have posts on failures. The LaCie has been around a long time and, based on some internet research, seems to be one of the better companies, but these are complicated devices with lots of moving parts, so some percent will always fail.
The best part- it even comes with cables for each of those interfaces, so you're ready to go if you've got a USB2, Firewire 400 or Firewire 800. No complaints. It sits behind my mac and happily backs up everything. It fires up every now and then, backs up stuff through Time Machine, then spins down. Overall- it's very quiet. I don't know what's controlling it- I guess Time Machine?, but it seems to be doing the job for me.
Excellent Product...
This is the fifth LaCie HD I have owned. None have given me even a few seconds of trouble. Extremely reliable in my experience. Will continue to buy LaCie in the future as my storage needs dictate.
My Lacie works well with my MAC
I like it just fine. Tricky thing is I had to reformat my HDD by going to Mac's Disk Utility and selecting Mac OS Journaled. If I do it using Lacie's software, I have to agree to their terms, which (from what I remember) appears to suggest no liability in case my HDD fails or something. Anyway, it works fine other than that. I have another Lacie, which I got about a year and a half ago, and being satisfied with that HDD's performance, I decided to get this one as a backup. Hope it lives a long life!
Problems with two LaCie D2 Quadras
I purchased two of these drives at the same time several months ago. I rarely make the time to write product reviews, but I'm disappointed enough with these to make it worth writing this. Several weeks ago, the first drive died after dropping from its vertical position to its horizontal position (one edge of the drive was touching the table the whole time. The other edge fell about 4 inches.) The drive didn't stop working right away--it started clicking more and more over the next hour and finally stopped working altogether. I was really lucky to have the drive backed up, but it still cost a lot of time.
The other drive has made a cheap, noisy whirring sound about 30% of the time (silent otherwise) since I took it out of the box. I will be contacting LaCie for replacements of both drives soon. I've had no issues with the Western Digital and Iomega Firewire 800 externals I'm also using.
Good product, with some oddities
I've been playing with this drive since I got in the last few hours.
Out of the box, first thing that caught my attention was the look of the drive. The picture in Lacie's website and elsewhere are good to show the drive in bright color. But the Aluminum enclosure is just 'dull'. That too, the face of the drive is too think and heavy - can't they carve out like Apple ? Overall the drive is very heavy. Equally the indicator button is too big and bright.
That said, I bought this drive mainly for the ports. Lacie provided cable for each of the ports, nice !
I pull the drive out, connected to my MacBook Pro, nice setup screen for Mac - full OS-X partition option or OS-X + Windows option. In less than 1 minute, drives were mount on the 'finder'. I've been transferring data from another external drive, for the last few hours. Very little sound during transfer.
Setting up the the stand to this drive is a different but very cool experience - new idea, to fix a stand. Overall I'm happy with the drive. Another good thing I noted and confirmed with Lacie support is this is a 240V compatible, for me to take it to Asia and/or Europe.
