compact, easy to use
I bought this as a backup for a couple of older computers, one of which was running win2k. Even though the documentation said this external hard drive would not work with win2k it worked anyway. Pleased about that.
It is quiet, doesn't get hot and is very easy to use. It is also very compact, not much bigger than a flash drive, but it works just like a flash drive. This is the 500gb unit, not the smaller one.
A couple of minor complaints, the white light indicating the unit is plugged in is way too bright. The USB cable that comes with this unit is too short, only about 18 inches long.
Easy and reliable
This HD was extremely easy to use. You plug the USB into your computer and without installing any additional software, you can begin dragging/dropping files onto it. No AC power cord makes it very portable as well. Fits in back pocket.
Western Digital Elements 640GB Portable Hard Drive contains WD6400BEVT Blue Scorpio
The Western Digital Elements 640GB Portable Hard Drive (WDBAAR6400ABK-NESN) contains a WD6400BEVT Blue Scorpio drive inside. It is the exact same drive as the 640GB Western Digital Passport drives.
Specs:
640GB
5400 RPM
8 MB cache
2.5" for laptops or powerless USB enclosures
9.5mm height fits all common laptops
(Model: WD6400BEVT, Scorpio Blue Drive)
Note: This is the largest 9.5mm height drives Western Digital offers. The fastest 9.5mm drives WD offers are the Scorpio Black series (7200 RPM/16 MB cache), and they only go up to 320GB.
There are videos on [...]/new-thinkpad-hard-drive for opening up a Passport and upgrading laptops. Elements is even easier to pop open than Passports. I just did this a few days ago. The back is snapfitted, so just apply pressure to the top on the corners to pop out the snaps. Then once you have the back removed, you apply pressure to the center of the top to push out the carrier. The drive sits neatly inside a metal enclosure and attaches to a USB connector board. You don't need any tools, except maybe a small flathead screwdriver to shimmy the USB connector off.
Works great!
I bought this drive to be a backup media for my Debian Linux (Lenny) laptop. Although WD does not officially support Linux, it works great. To get the drive to work in Linux, I just had to reformat it to use ext3 (or any other Linux-supported file system.) I setup sbackup (I think that's the one I used) to backup on a schedule. Now all I have to do is leave the drive connected overnight, and Debian auto-magically backs up the entire OS. I have successfully used the restore feature, so I know that the whole WD-Linux-ext3 scenario works as expected.
Plug-n-play HD, affordable, looks great and is very small!
My first impression of this HD was "wow, I didn't know it was this small". It looks great and is easy to move around. You can just plug it in and it will start working. So far, the only problems it has given me is that it wasn't displaying one time when I plugged it in but I highly think it may have been my computer's USB just being stubborn. I took it out and plugged it back in and it started working perfectly well. If you really need something bigger, you can get the same one but 1 TB instead of 500 GB for about $20 more.

Toshiba Portable Hard Drive is great.
I am relatively technology challenged, so this self-contained portable hard drive is perfect for me. Just plugged it in and it does all the rest.
Toshiba 640 GB USB 2.0 Portable HD
I LOVE this little external hard drive! It's low-profile, small and light, and has little rubber feet to keep it in place. It has a nice mini-USB cord that's only about 6", which is perfect for toting around w/o a lot of extra bulk and weight. Buy the suggested Case Logic case for it and you can take it everywhere, all the time. Very happy with my purchases.
Nice external drive
This external USB hard drive is what Western Digital drives used to be. I own two WD drives and love how easy they are to use. But the latest generation WD drives include unremovable backup software. After looking for alternatives I found Toshiba drives.
This drive provides exactly what I want from an external drive. It's small, light and operates silently. It comes with a short (12 inches) mini USB cable which is easy to transport with the drive and works great with notebook computers. It was ready to go as soon as I plugged the USB cable into my notebook, with no forced installation of unwanted software. For those who need backup software, it's included on the drive but can be easily deleted.
The only negative I've found so far is the ferrite lump on the USB cable. This is an electrical noise suppression device which is sometimes needed on long cables. It adds significantly to the bulk of an otherwise ideal cable.
Nice External drive, works great. Not crazy about the backup sofware
This external drive is nicely styled and shaped. Generally around the same dimensions of other portable external drives available. It doesn't come with any cover or carrying case, so you will need to purchase that separately. Comes with connection USB cable that also powers it and preinstalled software called Backup Now EZ, version 1.27 specifically for Toshiba drive. The drive itself was very easy to use, just plug into USB port and use whether for backup using the backup program or for just an extra drive to store files, etc. Very good capacity for the price. Though, I don't suggest use the backup software that is installed in the drive. For me, I tried it and found it to bog down my system trememdously that you can't do anything else or it will just freeze up on my computers. Give it several attempts on two computers. Finally ended up not using this backup software. Backup software Tech support (NTI)was unresponsive when I emailed for assistance. Other than that the drive is responsive and useful for its purpose. Drive is yes, backup software is no, use something else for backup purposes.
Excellent drive for the price
Greta drive. Easy install and a bit faster than the WD is replaced with this one. Relatively new, so no comment on long term reliability. Style is a bit different than other slim drives, but very compact and quieter than WD. So far - love it. Works well with BU software.

Great storage device
This is the second Western Digital brand external storage device I have owned. This device will work well with my desktop computer. It is not a compact design to be easily portable. The size is great to meet my needs for backup and file storage. Runs cool. Was easy to install using "plug and play" with my Windows Vista operating system, no additional software was required for operation.
Very good USB drive
I've never noticed how good this drive is until I started using the drives from the other vendors. Then it became obvious to me that this disk is:
1. Absolutely quite
2. Not getting hot or warm
3. It's faster than all 2TB USB2.0 drives I've tried.
4. It does have a usable indicator but it doesn't lit up your room at night with too much light
5. Works perfectly under Linux (not every vendor's drives do apparently).
6. The price is really good.
Bottom line is this is an ideal disk. You buy it, plug it in and forget about it.
good drive stand up well
this drive is serving me well. I have not had any problem with it. I do use it with software from Norton--ghost, or with software from acronis--true image. both programs work well, I wouldn't use them both together for a good back up. but use one or the other program, and the WD HD works well.
be advised that WD, like a lot of co.s makes a HD for Mac. this drive is not recomended for PCs. the correct driver for the mac drive is not availible so don't get the for mac, if you are running a PC. the edition in this review is OK for PCs and I have had good luck with it so far.
Happy with WD
This is my fourth WD drive. I purchased this one to hang on my home theater system with all of my photos, videos and music. Like all the others, I took it out of the box, wired it up, and pluged it in (all cables included!!). It worked flawlessly, didn't even need to read the instructions.
Very Dissapointed
I've been a loyal customer of western digital for years but I can't get the drive to operate with my windows 7 system and upon contacting the company by e-mail was told it's not compatible. All the documentation/packaging says otherwise, including their own web site. Either their tech support is incompetent or they've lied to me.

Lots of interfaces- Cables Included!
The reason why to buy this drive is if you want to use Firewire 800- a much faster interface than USB 2.0. Macs come with firewire built in, and this way it doesn't occupy one of your USB ports. So, get this if you've got a mac or anything with firewire, instead of the less expensive 1Tb drives that only have USB 2.0. Or, if you want to stack them- that works too.
It was easy to hook up and works seamlessly with Apple's "time machine" backup software. I've only had it for 2 months, so I can't comment on long term reliability, but it has a sturdy aluminum case, runs fairly cool, an eerie blue light and lots of interfaces! It seems to me that no matter what drive you research, they all have posts on failures. The LaCie has been around a long time and, based on some internet research, seems to be one of the better companies, but these are complicated devices with lots of moving parts, so some percent will always fail.
The best part- it even comes with cables for each of those interfaces, so you're ready to go if you've got a USB2, Firewire 400 or Firewire 800. No complaints. It sits behind my mac and happily backs up everything. It fires up every now and then, backs up stuff through Time Machine, then spins down. Overall- it's very quiet. I don't know what's controlling it- I guess Time Machine?, but it seems to be doing the job for me.
Excellent Product...
This is the fifth LaCie HD I have owned. None have given me even a few seconds of trouble. Extremely reliable in my experience. Will continue to buy LaCie in the future as my storage needs dictate.
My Lacie works well with my MAC
I like it just fine. Tricky thing is I had to reformat my HDD by going to Mac's Disk Utility and selecting Mac OS Journaled. If I do it using Lacie's software, I have to agree to their terms, which (from what I remember) appears to suggest no liability in case my HDD fails or something. Anyway, it works fine other than that. I have another Lacie, which I got about a year and a half ago, and being satisfied with that HDD's performance, I decided to get this one as a backup. Hope it lives a long life!
Problems with two LaCie D2 Quadras
I purchased two of these drives at the same time several months ago. I rarely make the time to write product reviews, but I'm disappointed enough with these to make it worth writing this. Several weeks ago, the first drive died after dropping from its vertical position to its horizontal position (one edge of the drive was touching the table the whole time. The other edge fell about 4 inches.) The drive didn't stop working right away--it started clicking more and more over the next hour and finally stopped working altogether. I was really lucky to have the drive backed up, but it still cost a lot of time.
The other drive has made a cheap, noisy whirring sound about 30% of the time (silent otherwise) since I took it out of the box. I will be contacting LaCie for replacements of both drives soon. I've had no issues with the Western Digital and Iomega Firewire 800 externals I'm also using.
Good product, with some oddities
I've been playing with this drive since I got in the last few hours.
Out of the box, first thing that caught my attention was the look of the drive. The picture in Lacie's website and elsewhere are good to show the drive in bright color. But the Aluminum enclosure is just 'dull'. That too, the face of the drive is too think and heavy - can't they carve out like Apple ? Overall the drive is very heavy. Equally the indicator button is too big and bright.
That said, I bought this drive mainly for the ports. Lacie provided cable for each of the ports, nice !
I pull the drive out, connected to my MacBook Pro, nice setup screen for Mac - full OS-X partition option or OS-X + Windows option. In less than 1 minute, drives were mount on the 'finder'. I've been transferring data from another external drive, for the last few hours. Very little sound during transfer.
Setting up the the stand to this drive is a different but very cool experience - new idea, to fix a stand. Overall I'm happy with the drive. Another good thing I noted and confirmed with Lacie support is this is a 240V compatible, for me to take it to Asia and/or Europe.

Sturdy Construction
This product seems like it is made well. So far, it has worked great - even though my cat knocked it and another hard drive on the floor when he got tangled in the cords. The other drive actually died and this one kept on working.
The best thing since sliced bread!
The size is perfect - the way it sits on my counter is perfect - the way it works is fast and perfect and if I need more storage I'll purchase another one! It is so nice to finally have enough room for all my recorded TV shows and movies all in one spot. I like the way it has it's own power source and doesn't add that draw to my computer. As far as I am concerned it's the greatest thing since sliced bread - everyone should own at least one of them....oh...and Amazon.com delivered it fast no problem!
Mac users, be careful...
Running Mac OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard without the snow) on a Mac Mini with a 1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo processor.
Possible pros:
Followed directions to use the partition tab of Mac's disk utility to format the drive as Mac OS extended (journaled), selecting the GUID partition table option. Drive formatted quickly. Verify Disk (under First Aid in Disk Utility) showed the volume "appears to be okay."
Moved 20 Gb from an overstuffed Mac Mini drive to the Iomega. That operation seemed flawless. Access seems much faster than with the Iomega Minimax drive (as "About This Mac" says, "Up to 480 Mb/sec" versus up to 400 Mb/sec for the Minimax).
Cons for this Mac user:
This drive's noise pattern is much different than the Iomega Minimax drive, which sits under our Mac Mini. When formatted for the Mac, the Prestige drive made a loud click, grinding sound on startup and when ejected. Accessing files also generated noise (clicks and/or clunks) sometimes, but it was mostly quiet between activities, except for some clicks and clunking sounds. The intermittent clicking destroyed my faith in the reliability of this drive and power supply.
Equally disturbing, the drive seemed to interfere with the Mac's power management, as the Mac Mini would not sleep during inactivity when the drive was attached.
Strangely enough, when I reformatted the drive for a PC, its strange noise behavior improved. But I bought the drive to run with my Mac, as Iomega advertises it is capable of doing.
Bye, bye, Prestige drive...
Thanks to everyone who reviewed this drive, positive and negative. Looking at the distribution of five-star and one-star reviews, you might say this drive exhibits a modified bathtub curve for reliability. I don't trust my data to a drive made by a company more interested in squeezing the profit margin than in continuous quality improvement.
Based on the drive's no-star performance under OSX, I returned it to the always 10-star Amazon. It took more than 50 hours to erase (and zero out) the drive.
It appears that there are known issues with the power supply. The troubleshooting section in the user's manual (which should be available as a PDF download rather than HTML) gives clues with the following statements: "The problem is probably due to a non-compliant USB or FireWire controller chip or other devices on your computer system... Do not connect or disconnect other USB devices while the Iomega Hard Drive is transferring information."
For reference: Prestige 1.5T Drive: UPC label serial number TJA0070BD5 assembled in Thailand, job number 530378, date 02-09-10. Power Supply: Ultra Energy made in China, UL file number E323619.
Only had it a short time, but...
Everthing seems to be going well. Very quiet, and lots of space for the price paid. It also looks pretty.
Iomega External Hard Drive
I've been really happy so far with the external hard drive. I never needed to use any instructions for it, it's totally self explanatory, and the MAC does everything for you anyway. Right before Christmas, my hard drive on the Macbook Pro crashed, it was a manufacturers error or something, but I lost my entire graphic design portfolio since the data recovery center wasn't able to do anything about it. So I needed a hard drive so it wouldn't happen again. This was the very best deal, it was rated the most favorably, and it was the most cost effective. It's 500G for only about 70 dollars, and it works great. The only problem that I could see with it is it's not exactly portable....I mean obviously you can transport it around but its a bit big to carry around all the time to and from class or work or something. That's OK with me though, I just leave it on my desk and plug it in to back up my work in the evenings.

Love these free agents!
I have a few of these. 250GB, 300GB and recently just purchased the 1TB.
Warning on the 1TB it took a few days to format out of the box. the third day my computer was shut down and when I rebooted the drive said it needed to be formated. I finially opted for the quick format which took about a few seconds. I have not put anything on it yet. I am sure it will work as well as my others, only one usb to power and use it. I love these things. I am currently loading my dvd's on them to play on my netbooks which do not have the optical drives for dvds.
good product, good sale
I enjoy this product, and it works just great. Handy, compact, and durable, hasn't been tested from a drop or water damage yet, but it seems to be perfect.
Good drive for your media library
I purchased this 1TB drive, and put a few video files on it as a test, and plugged it into my Samsung 52" lcd (model ln52B630). it played back flawlessly!!!. You couldn't tell if it was USB or HDMI, and it was USB. I gave this 3 stars because I did not like the bloatware that is included with this drive, but if you want the backup options included I guess they are fine. I got the free dock, which I hooked up to the TV. The drive seems solid and well built.
Good drive
Good drive, just wish that you could disable Seagate Manager, seemingly as it's always active on my computer but I leave it dormant.
True plug and play
Easy install on my dell laptop with windows Vista.
plugged it in, it basicly installed itself in a few minutes.
I have had a dozen different external hard drives over the years,This is the best so far.
Quiet, easy to use, fairly cool to the touch, some drives that i have had seemed to run a little warm,
maybe that's why none of them lasted. I have very high hopes for this one.
If i end up needing another drive i will be buying a Seagate.

VCD gone!, Install a driver?, Died in 24 hours.
I purchased this drive in March 2010. I followed WD's instructions for removing the virtual CD (VCD): 1) update the firmware, 2) run software to disable the VCD. After that, the VCD was gone (it was just hidden). However, whenever I inserted the drive into a machine, every version of Windows I inserted it into would pop up a dialog asking for the location of the driver for the new hardware. I would click cancel and I could access the drive like any USB drive. I do not know what the driver would have supported. I repartitioned the drive and formatted it (writing zeros to every sector). The next day, the format was complete.
I used this drive to copy several large files from numerous systems for backup. About 6 hours into the day, I had copied a total of about 200GB onto the drive from about 5 systems. Then the drive stopped responding. It started making that clicking noise. I assume the untimely death is an unfortunate fluke. I do not hold that against WD. However, the driver pop-up is a real turn off for me.
Initial Feedback
Several years ago I bought the 80GB WD Passport. It was the largest offering at the time, and essentially the same price, a little over $200. In comparison this 1TB WD Passport is also the largest offered. No buyers remorse in either situation - getting something that lasts years and has the maximum storage available has always worked out. The dimensions of this drive as well as the fit and finish are very attractive. Further, the new cable has a spring loaded connector - the old one would tend to fall out when you moved the wire/laptop/drive too far. The backup software is apparently working, quickly and in the background. Of course you never know how good your backup is until after you need it.
This whole product line has been unreliable
I had some trouble with their previous products in this line, along the lines of premature failures and having to reformat the disks every few months.
I somehow thought that the new product would overcome this. However, after three months with the one terabyte device it, too, won't connect to either of two Windows computers where I have the drivers install. Lights blink and their special driver software flickers as if it is going to recognize the drive and then doesn't. LIghts continue to blink.
Even if it were working I would not recommend it due to the hokey interface software. I was just looking for a simple USB disk that I could plug in and use. Instead I got this thing that originally looks like a read-only optical disk. After you let it self install there is a WD icon in your the notificztion area of your system tray forever, whether or not the disk is installed. When you plug it in the software grabs it and you have to fight with it to keep it from initiating an automatic backup. Eventutally you can just use it as a connected drive, but you have to go through the same drill the next time you plug it in.
It's great that they have so much storage in such a small package. It would be greater if the software weren't so poorly designed and the hardware lasted more than a few months of carrying it on business travel.
I cannot recommend this product to anyone and am hoping to get my money back from Amazon.
Plenty of space in a small package
This is a large drive in a small package, really useful for transporting files and backup.
I ordered from amazon, and the drive arrived with the improved USB cable (New cable part number: 4064-705074-000Old cable p/n: 4064-705045-000 The number is located on the back of the "USB 2.0" sticker on the cable)
It's running on my macbook; I bought the windows version, so I had to reformat with disk utility, took a few minutes.
The Mac software update is tricky to find on the WD site - it's at

Haven't installed the SmartWare software yet, so I can't honestly comment on it; it seems useful if you travel with the drive, and need the security.
Western Digital (sucks) SmartWare
After purchasing this drive, you will find a nice little surprise... it's advertised as a feature but if you want to delete it... think again...
Who's brilliant idea was it to suck up 663.3MB with this software. You can't even delete it. They said they listen to their users and responded. Providing software to hide the volume is a half-assed response on partially deaf ears (must have gone deaf about the part where users are asking how to DELETE their software). They only heard what they wanted to hear. You are still missing over half a gigabyte (512MB = .5GB). Unusable, and do they think their solution is the best one and/or it is something ALL users want.
This "SmartWare" is Western Digital's way to inflict their backup and security solution onto unsuspecting consumers. You know about it because it is prominently advertised as a great new feature but you are in for a rude awakening if you have no need for it and want to delete it and claim back precious disk space. The software appears on your desktop as a separate volume. Don't want to use it or see it, let's just eject it... whoops, it's back, you cannot eject it even after the main volume is ejected, WTF is that about.
To get "around" this, you have to run two separate apps that you download from their site. One is to update the drive's firmware first and the second app allows you to hide and unhide the volume. Backup and security software is supposed to run silently in the background. It needs to stay out of your way not jump in your face, are you listening Western Digital. This is what happens when proprietary gear heads get locked together in a dark room. A monkey with a Ouija board could have seen the backlash with a bonehead decision like this. If there wasn't a backlash why would they provide software to hide the volume.
Funny how the marketing group decided to exclude this little tidbit of information from consumers. Sales figure would be much lower if they prominently marketed this feature. "By the way, we have included WD SmartWare, an ingenious method to force our way on you because 1) You cannot remove this software, 2) You can only hide it so the usable space itself is still 663.3MB less than advertised, 3) The SmartWare mounts on your desktop as a Virtual Drive and you cannot eject, if you try it will simply remount itself and annoy, irritate and bug the crap out of you".
The SmartWare volume itself says it is 237.5MB but Get Info reports 663.3MB is used, the rest is used for the SmartWare version for Windows and other overhead. That's right, you get two copies, what a bonus!! what a waste of disk space!!.
Another irritating thing is the plug that connects to the drive, it's proprietary, you cannot use a standard micro or mini USB plug, it also does not stay securely connected. Turning the device over disconnects the drive and then you have to fiddle with it to reconnect. Why would you do this, you are asked to verify the serial number of your device before you try to hide the SmartWare volume. This is dangerous, if you have a backup running and you move the device because it is in the way on your desk, it may disconnect.
Remember, this is a portable device, designed to be moved around (i.e.., taken with you if needed) so it will not always be returned to the same place on your desk. Another FAIL for Western Digital. Quality Control and Quality Assurance took a back seat here.
All of management needs to go, with thinking like this running through the top, you know you are in trouble. I'm going to vote with my wallet, Western Digital just lost a customer.
