Excellent product

looks great as a paperweight
I am a huge fan of small drives like this, I have quite a few from a variety of manufacturers. Toshiba has done great products and this one was aggressively priced so I got it.
It arrived, looked great, super light but with a very short USB cable which was disappointing. Still I liked the color since I color code externals by usage and red was a new color for me. (My LaCies have color bumpers on them)

Plugged it into the computer and it was, then was not, recognized, at first I thought it was a cable thing since the OS recognized it sometimes and then lost it only to re-find it again. The drive then started making clicking sounds and it failed shortly thereafter.

I stupidly got rid of the packaging (I had never gotten a bad drive before) so I had to get an RMA from Toshiba, that was easy but between the cost of shipping it back and the insurance I could have gotten a LaCie and dropped it a few times and it still would be working.
Now I wait for it to be returned, if something awful happens I will update this. Otherwise I'm sure it will be ok, but still I regret the impulse buy.

TOOK 3 MONTHS TO DIE. I'VE HAD SLICED BREAD THAT LASTED LONGER.
Was working great and in a flash, I got an device error notice. From what I understand this is a common occurance with this brand/model. Contacting the company to see what can be used to remedy this situation. From what I understand whatever happens, the data is lost forever. What a bummer.

WASTE OF MONEY!!!
I bought this in January 2010. In April completely stopped working and had to send to factory to fix. Needless to say, everything that was on it is lost forever! After 3 weeks finally rec'd it back. Plugged it in yesterday and it's not working again.....

Good Drive and Excellent price
This is my fourth Toshiba portable drive and I love them all. This newer model Canvio 640 GB has added rubber around the edges which is a great idea. It makes the drive much less likely to be dropped. Performance is good and I have had no problems with reading or writing to it. Data transfer is as fast as a USB 2.0 connection allows. I don't think anyone would be dissapointed in the unit and Amazon's service and shiping time was excellent. All in all a good price for a good drive.

Fast, Quiet, So Portable! Small Size--Perfect for Taking My PC With Me!
Just received this Rocket Red Toshiba Hard Drive yesterday, so I am giving it an early review of my experience thus far...And I took it out of the box which contained the hard disk, USB cable (there is no AC plug with this drive because the USB cable runs the drive from the power of the USB port). And I plugged in the USB cable into the drive and then into my USB port, and Windows 7 instantly found the driver and I was up and running in just 1 minute or less. Then I went on to back up my hard disk. Now I did this in increments of just 10 folders at one time. Why just 10 folders at one time? I did this to discover how fast the drive would work. And work quickly, oh yes, it did. I was able to copy my first 10 quite large folders in just about 15 minutes. Then I went on to the next 10 folders, and these were smaller ones so they took less than 11 minutes to complete. In fact, I found this drive to be just as fast for me as my larger iOmega 1 TB desktop drives! What a delightful surprise, this drive is just as fast as the big boys!
This is the PERFECT on the go portable hard drive. It is lightweight, not much larger than a tiny notepad, yet works just as well as the desktop external hard drives. I own 2 iOmega desktop hard drives that I keep on desks just for backups and more hard disk space. This portable hard drive I carry around and use like a JUMBO flash drive. This drive comes installed with these items:
1) Setup for backing up your files. (I have not installed this yet as I back up daily anyway).
2) Quick Reference Guide in PDF (this is the instruction booklet and warranty information in English and also in several languages).
Hopefully this drive will work for a long time and if it does pass the test of time, hopefully this Red Rocket will have a "sibling". So far, I highly recommend this drive as my favorite thing about it is that to me, it is like a JUMBO FLASH drive that I can carry everywhere with ease!
**By the way, I purchased a Magenta Caselogic Small External Hard Drive Case (I have reviewed that as well) and it is perfect for carrying around this wonderful portable hard drive as it has a pocket inside for the USB cord and a separate area for the harddrive). I would suggest to anyone who buys this hard disk to buy a portable case for it.

Awesome drive!
I picked this up at Best Buy for $89 (the red version). It works great and flawlessly. I did not use the built in software, therefore I cannot rate that, but the drive works as it is supposed to. It is fast and very quiet. The built in light is nice and bright and the rubber feet and rubber sides makes it slip free and easy to handle. Overall: EXCELLENT!

Failed Within a Month
I've had my eye open for one of these since before they existed. I work in the Multimedia industry and require a large amount of space to store my data. I purchased this drive on August 8, 2010. Yesterday, Sept. 2, 2010, it failed. I contacted Seagate and they referred me to their data recovery team who offered to recover my lost data for up to $1500. Not expecting to have the hard drive fail immediately, I was still in the process of backing up my files and lost almost all of them.

I had to send back this beeping drive.
I had two basic problems with this drive: the software and the drive's power saving behavior.

1) Software

I typically use my own software rather than what comes packaged with drives like this. But a review I read said it was decent, so I let it install when I first attached the drive. Yet for some reason it would not work properly with Vista. Even though I would give it permission to run, it would never successfully start.

You also cannot directly access the drive with a double left click. This launches the software that never successfully starts. You have to right click + explore to access any files without the software interface. Extremely annoying.

So I uninstalled the software and placed the autorun and other root level files in a folder in case I wanted to use them later. No dice, same access and launching problems. So I formatted the drive, and that solved the problem.

2) Power Saving

Now that I had an accessible drive, I started transferring files. But when the PC went into power saving mode, the drive turned itself off mid-transfer and removed itself from the system. Annoying.

And when I woke the PC up, I had to physically reattach the drive for it to be seen again. I read on a forum that it would eventually reattach itself after a few minutes, but why would anyone want to wait that long?

So after physically reattaching the drive, it started to beep once a second for a long time. I had to replug/unpower it a few times to get this to stop. Then I started transferring again.

This problem happened over and over and over. Very, very annoying.

So back went the drive.

Great portability
This very compact Seagate external hard drive makes it easy to transfer large amounts of data even by today's standards. At less than $90, I find it reasonably priced.
Pros:
- small and attractive design for a 500GB unit
- very flexible - although the included cable offers a good transfer speed via USB 2.0, there are options to upgrade the cables and speed (3.0 is supposed to be 10 times faster).
- works well with my Windows 7, Vista and XP systems
Cons:
- shiny design makes it hard to keep without finger marks
- unless you use this drive on a laptop, the provided USB 2.0 cable is extremely short
- I like to back up Photoshop pictures to this hard drive yet the 2 year warranty (versus the standard 5) may lead me to burn them to DVD instead.

Seagate Free Agent
Works great, but a good option is to back up the items that you want to(darg and drop manualy) not the ones that windows will choose for you because you will end up backing up files manualy anyway.

Didn't even work on the first use
I hardly ever leave reviews on Amazon, but I thought I had to for this HD. I got it a week ago at a famous NYC store, but didn't get a chance to use it before a few days ago, after I left the city. Well, I plugged the drive in my USB port, and it started to make a clicking noise, along with a faint bipping sound. I waited for several minutes and the disk still wouldn't mount on my laptop. It was in the same bag as my other HDs, of which were 2 seagates agent Go and one Toshiba 1TB. I have had the two former for a year and a half now, and they work just fine. So does the Toshiba. Still, I wasted $140 for this GoFlex piece of trash.
Not only that, but the cable is proprietary, meaning you cannot use it with the traditional USB/mini USB cables.
I'm done with Seagate.

Not fancy, but works really well
I was looking for an external HD to backup my family pictures collection and my "cloud" data, neither particularly big. I've been using the WDE320 and works really well. It doesn't have fancy options, but it's really easy to use, just plug it and works (like a huge flash drive). I'm using a FAT partition to be able to use it simultaneously in my Mac and PCs, the performance slows a little, but nothing of practical significance.

Documentation
The package reads: Contents: USB 2.0 portable hard drive; USB cable; Quick Install guide. There was no Quick Install Guide in the package. A paper in the package states that a PDF copy of the manual is installed on the drive. Wrong - there's nothing on the drive. I received my Elements on a Saturday before Labor Day, so couldn't reach customer support until Tuesday, and the so-called technician initially said they aren't included because customers just lose them anyway, and then tried to lead me through their website to find the documents, but finally said that the documents are not available because they aren't needed. I haven't used the drive yet because I always read all of the documentation first - so can't comment on any other feature.

Small and Easy to Use
My old hard drive with less memory was twice the size of this. I was impressed by its small size and simple matte finish. I use it with time machine on an iMac 20". It works great. Easy set-up. My only complaint is the short length of the included mini-usb cable. Why is it so small? It's 12 inches long which is much shorter than the cable on my old drive. Aside from that i'm very happy with it.

Backup is fundamental!
Got on a smokin' deal on this, the primary purpose for me was to format it FAT32 and use it with my PS3. Since it's very roomy, I can transfer files between work and home, Mac to PC, PVR to PS3 and beyond. Self powered USB bus means no more separate power "brick" to hoist around too, which is huge to me. I have Western Digital hard drives in just about anything that'll take a 2.5" drive, so I do like the brand, value, and reliability. Works perfectly with Snow Leopard & Time Machine
I purchased the 1TB model this morning, hooked it up to my 2009-era MacBook Pro, reformatted the drive to HFS+ Journaled, and told Time Machine to use it as a backup disk, and it worked. That's it.

No issues with virtual disks, or firmware, or embedded software, or any of that junk. It is powered by my MBP's USB port as stated, so no issues there. Even the USB cable works fine and stays connected.

I have seen a lot of complaints about this drive, but frankly, none of the problems are apparent in my drive. For the record, the bottom of my drive has "0211B R/N: B9B" on it. R/N may be "revision number?" At any rate, it's possible WD has heard the feedback and made great progress, because like the title of my review says, it's working perfectly for me.

The only thing I could possibly dock it a star for is a cheap, shiny black plastic housing that looks absolutely atrocious as it picks up fingerprints, smudges, etc. It really should have been a matte or pebble-textured case, since it is meant to be portable (and thus handled) but oh well.

If you are running the latest OS on a recent Mac and need a Time Machine backup device, this fits the bill wonderfully.

Pure Garbage
I bought my WD 1TB my passport SE and was very excited until i transfered about 300 GB of data onto it and the next day it said my password was wrong and my password hint did not exsist and i had to format my drive. then everything was great after i had loaded about 700 GB onto it and randomly i turned on my computer and my drive told me that there was no data on it any more and that i would have to format it in order to use it. So long story short in the span of owning this thing for one week i have lost over a TB of data because of this defective piece of junk. DO NOT BUY IT!!!!

Worst connection I've ever seen.
The device uses a wobbly micro USB connection that disconnects on the slightest movement. That means, in order to move this drive, you need to absolutely not touch the drive, cable, or your computer in any way shape or form while you use it. In addition, even if you're absolutely steady, if the micro USB is wobbled to the wrong side when it's connected, the device might not be recognized or not even power on if connected.

Seriously, who tested this drive before they shipped it? I love western digital drives, but huge fail on this one. I used this drive to back up my data, but it gets spontaneously disconnected so often from vibrations on a table that after backing up my data on it, I feel it's more unstable than my failing drive and more unusable than a standard external that you need to haul around a power brick for.

Don't get this drive.

Excellent product--but...
I love my WD Passport external hard drive that I bought a few years ago, and when that one filled up, I knew I wanted another of the same brand. The problem is (as many, many people have already mentioned) is that WD gummed up the works with an unnecessary feature that constantly backs up your computer, which is fine, if you want that sort of thing, but I assuredly did not. I knew what I was getting into, and I knew that I was buying a Windows drive for a Mac, but I could not plug it in and use it immediately after purchase. With a little help from Mac's disc utility I was able to reformat the drive so I can use it in the same way that I use my first one--easily transferring it from my Mac to other Windows based computers. So, it is a great product, from a reliable company, it is small and sleek and quiet, but just expect to have to do a little bit of finagling to make it work the way that its earlier version did right out of the box.

Do NOT buy this!
I did not buy this via Amazon, but at a local store.
I typically love the ease of WD passports, but this is unusable unless you:
1. never move while working
2. never bump the cord
3. stay in one working position
4. never have to get up and use the bathroom

This portable HD CONSTANTLY becomes disconnected! I cannot express how incredibly disappointed I am with it.
I wish they would go back to their old connectors.

Buy an older one or get a LACIE.....

Seagate harddrive
The harddrive is easy to use, has the space required,my only problem with it is the added software. When you click on the hardrive to open it, it tries to add the software to your computer. I use a harddrive by drop and drag, and do not need extra hardware on the drive. This space could well be used for more of my data.

Great drive for PS3 and MBP
Great Drive. Small, slim, and aesthetically pleasing. Simple to use and format the unnecessary files included in the drive, which is an issue with the Western Digital My Passport. Lots of people have commented on how they like the lights of the drive. The silver and black one compliment the Macbook Pro nicely.

I'm using the drive on a Macbook Pro and Playstation 3. It was formatted 2/3 Fat32 for the Playstation and 1/3 Mac format (HFS+) for use with time machine. Works flawlessly on both devices. No issues so far. Speed isn't bad, no lag when watching movies straight from the drive. Don't let the negative reviews deter you, hard drives are fragile so yes some will arrive dead and some will die within a couple months. Regardless of the manufacturer hard drives fail, its a fact. That is why it is important to backup your backup. Spending $170 on two drives is much better than spending up to a $1000 to recover data from a hard drive that has failed. If it ever were to fail Seagate's 5 year warranty is definitely a reason to purchase this over its competitors. The Western Digital equivalent which comes with a 2 year warranty is almost disrespectful to the consumer. If I purchase any product I want the manufacturer to stand behind it. Very happy overall with the purchase, I've also had the old freeagent (non "go" version) for years and it's still running great.

Purchased the 640GB and its socking to see they have raised the price by over $20, I thought electronics drop in price with time not increase. I would have purchased another one already if that wasn't the case.

A lot better than the Western Digital "my Passport" drives.
My choice between this and the Western Digital "my Passport" drive wasn't an easy one. I've long been a fan of Western Digital, but their "my Passport" drive series is nothing but a pain from what I've heard.

It seems it constantly tries to install software every time you plug it in, and formatting the drive does not help as it's built into the hardware. That would be very aggravating, especially if you're like me and you don't want any special software; you just want storage.

This Seagate FreeAgent does exactly what I want. Reliable, quick (for a USB powered 5400RPM drive), doesn't force their software on you & just works.

This 1TB pocketable HDD is very good from the features/performance perspective. Just that it is a bit bulky compared to the competition. The bulkiness is easily offset by the 5yr warranty that it carries and the name Seagate is respected in the consumer data storage circles.

I also bought a Case Logic Compact Portable Hard Drive Case (Black) to carry this baby. The HDD fits in the case nicely and securely.

LaCie External Hard Drives
I am a Photographer, and i need reliable fast external hard disk space. I have settled on LaCie drives using Firewire 800 after trying many other choices. I use two 1 TB drives for my photograph database. I put everything on the first drive, and then mirror that on the second drive. And then burn backups on DVD. And then upload to my Zenfolio hosted web site, [...]. Zenfolio makes a backup copy of all my uploads. My experience with using USB hubs has been spotty. I got several chances to use my backups when drives failed on USB hubs. I use high quality Firewire cables and daisy chain the drives on my MacBook Pro. I also discovered that on Mac OS X, i must actually turn on Journaling. Even though I formatted the new drives with HFS+ with Journaling, Journaling needs to be turned on. For those who are asking "What is Journaling?" Journaling keeps a log of all disk Writes, and backs out any incomplete operations, after a system crash interrupts the system. This is a very good thing! David

Fast and Reliable
Casing is high quality and it is very fast. I use this with my iMac and I like how it goes to sleep mode automatically when not in use for a long time. I've used it for 2 months now and never had any problems with overheating and data loss.

14 months of continuous 24/7 use and no issues. Just ordered another one!
I purchased this drive in early May of 2009 and it has been running continuously 24/7 ever since. I use this as a Time Machine backup drive for my weather station computer (Apple Macintosh 24" Intel iMAC running OSX 10.6.4) so it needs to be on all the time. In addition to this application, the other partitions are used for Time Machine backups for two other machines on our network plus a 200 GB free space partition for network storage . Transfer speeds with Firewire 800 and overall reliability have been impressive so far and with the 3 year P&L warranty, I have the piece of mind in knowing that I am covered should anything go south. So far there have been no issues and the drive runs very quiet.

One of the other external drives on our network is showing signs of problems (EZQUEST 250 GB Firewire 400), so based on the solid performance of the d2 Quadra, I decided to replace the EZQUEST with another d2 Quadra. I just finished placing my order for the second unit and decided that it was time to post a review of this product.

I generally don't give 5 star reviews as a matter of course, but based on how easy this drive was to setup with OSX and how well it has handled running continuously for over 14 months, I figured this product deserved the high score.

Based on my experience with the product, aside from those reporting a dead drive out of the box or an early failure due to a defect, I don't understand where the folks giving this a 1-2 star review are coming from. I suspect their issues with performance are the result of pilot error, or some other user induced problem. The power supply failures many seem to be complaining about could be the result of poor AC line voltage consistency at the user's location coupled with a lack of surge protection. A high quality line voltage filter or battery backup with surge protection is a must for any computer gear, as is a well ventilated environment free from excessive heat for extended periods of time. Both of these conditions can cause a power supply to fail consistently unless the problems with fluctuating AC current/voltage and ventilation are corrected.

Having read some very disappointing reviews of other external drives, I decided to order two of these as backup for my digital images and music. This was an excellent choice. Both drives arrived more quickly than promised; were packed well and arrived in great condition; both drives contained all cables, power supply and instructions for a quick and easy installation; software is preloaded on the drives; compatible with both Mac (which I have) and Windows; the drives formatted quickly and accurately; both run cool and very quietly; quickly mount on the desktop when powered up; file transfer speed is impressive; compatible with Firewire 400, 800, USB and eSATA.; large capacity should be useful for a long time.

These drives are not inexpensive....but why would anyone chance losing valuable data on a cheaper (perhaps) inferior product. I would purchase this brand/product again in a heartbeat....they appear to be built to deliver optimum service for a very long time.

LaCie Drives Are Consistently Junk--I'm Done.
This drive is the last LaCie product I will ever buy. I bought them for my Mac because they are the main brand at Apple stores, but I am finally done with them. They work fine for as long as they work, but the quality is incredibly substandard. I'm pretty tolerant of technology, and recognize that there's the possibility of a lemon with any company or product line. But I've gone through two of these in the last two years. The most recent one, the d2 Quadra, is only about six weeks old. Out of the box, it made an ominous "thunk" noise every time the disk would engage. But in the past week, it's now begin making a low droning noise at all time, which leads me to believe it's not long for this world. I only hope it remains functional long enough to copy my data to a replacement drive.

Do not, and I repeat, do not buy these drives. I never will again. I'm tired of throwing my money down a rat hole.
