First test of the JVC GZ-HD620
I did a lot of research before buying this product because I was concerned about low light performance(many HD cameras record grainy in low light.) You need to spend some time with the manuals to get full use of the features.

Pros: Small, light, easy to use, everything performs as it should.
Low light performance was exellent, this is what makes it stand out from most others, a feature called Super LoLux (Warning-cheaper JVC models don't have this feature-I bought one and returned it). Here is a YouTube URL from our first use
[...]
or just do a YouTube search for Shayla and Jake. Select the highest resolution and go full screen and judge the video quality for yourself.

Cons: Just one, It comes with no cables for connecting to an HD TV. You must purchase a 'Mini HDMI' yourself. This is the only reason I did not give it 5 Stars.

Battery life is about 45 min. I will be ordering a second one.
I hope this helps.
happy
picture looks great....and believe the low light feature they talk about. i filmed my daughters birthday party inside with very low light....and even with just candles burning....and it adjusted very well, and still had a clear picture. Only downfall was that the software they give you to transfer the video to your pc seemed to not work well for me. I even tried on two different computers. The picture kept skipping while trying to view on the pc...
Great Picture, Lot's of Wind Noise - Watch Video Test
On the whole I'm very happy with this camera. Excellent detail and color. One drawback is that the microphones pick up a lot of windnoise which can drown out the recording. To remedy this I bought WindCutters and placed them on the microphone holes. This solved the problem.

[...]

You can watch a video I took before I put the Windcutters on by following the link below. This is a video about an Urban Farm in the heart of San Francisco. I got some incredible close-ups of bees!

Great Camera, Great Price
Having researched a bit about buying a High Def Camcorder these last two weeks, I made the decision to go for HD620, and on the whole, I certainly don't regret it.
Having said that, I've only had the camera for a few hours now, so my 'review' isn't a fully fledged full review at all, but more with first impressions.

One thing I would like to share before I list any negatives, is this..
I set up the camcorder on a tripod and zoomed in to some plants down at ground level far below my 6th floor apartment, then set it to record (on UXP mode). After a minute or so of recording I plugged it into my HDTV, and I was totally blown away at the level of details on this HD picture, I could see ants walking up the plants and flies near by, and this must be close to 80-100 metres away.. WOW!!! On this basis alone, I felt justified in my purchase.

I've yet to test it properly, but first impressions are looking very favorable.. So why only the 4 stars..
The Negatives..
- For me (others may not have issues) I find the scroll bar and the button presses a little fiddly, it may take some getting used to, but I find myself scrolling right past the menu item I want very easily.
-Lack of separate charger.. You charge the battery by having the battery on the camcorder and then the power cord plugs into the camcorder. I would prefer having a separate battery charger - they are an optional extra, but it would be good if they were included as standard.
-Software doesn't work on a Mac. I pushed in the JVC disc, but noticed all the files were for windows. Not too fussed as I would be using Adobe Premiere anyway. But still, I wanted to check out the software.

Ok, 3 negatives, but honestly, they are only small things. Overall, for the price, I don't think you can go too far wrong purchasing this camcorder.
I love it!
I bought this camera after my 4 year JVC 30 GB HDD camera started pixelating my videos. Not the look I'm going for on YouTube! I wanted to finally upgrade to a high definition camera but wanted to be economical. I went to the store with the big yellow tag to preview cameras. I tested lots of brands but I'm most familiar with JVC. According to the salesman, most cameras today do not come with a remote. ??? Being a solo videographer, a remote is paramount and the JVC does come with a remote. Being a comparison shopper, I checked the prices on Amazon and it was priced better and had 2 day shipping with Amazon prime. The camera is wonderful. The videos are rich and true HD. The still shots are not the best for me, but I have a digital still camera for that purpose so not a deal breaker for me.

The Bad:
The buttons are a little awkward and small but not a deal breaker for me. If you want a viewfinder, there is not one. It took me a minute to realize there's no "power" button. The camera comes on and turns off when you open or close the flip out screen. There is no separate battery charger other than the AC one that plugs into the camera. There IS a separate battery charger available for purchase. I ended up buying one and an extended battery too because the power was quickly exhausted in the one that came with the camera.

I'm still fumbling with the best way to review footage. The "laser touch" is a little quirky but I am getting the hang of it.
The major drawback of this camera is that when I dropped the AVCHD (raw video footage) into my slide show program, the video played in "double time" meaning the audio did not match the video. I emailed my slide show company and they explained that the AVCHD files were "raw files" and would not drop and drag in some programs. They had to be converted. I found a program that converts but of course, for a fee. You can drop and drag the raw file footage in Adobe Premiere Elements without a problem but I like the features of my other program.

The Good: The remotes that I own from my previous JVC camcorder works with this one too so if I lose one and I've been known to do so, I have backups. The camera is small and sleek. It is priced right too. The video quality is great. The audio is great too. I recorded my cousins commencement speech and could hear it perfectly, along with the crying baby behind me. LOL. The internal 120GB storage is a treat to have.

Are there better HD camcorders to buy? Sure. But for the price, the brand and quality of this JVC, this is a great camera. I high recommend it for someone who wants to upgrade to a true HD camcorder with a remote!

Not what I expected
I had been looking for a second video camera, one with a sizeable internal hard drive to store a lot of footage. I was partial to Sony, having purchased many Sony products over the years that gave good service. I did my homework and checked out reviews and Tech websites. Finally I settled on this camcorder. When it arrived, I was excited to test it out. I took some footage of my garden, about one minute. Then I downloaded the clip into my computer. Gasp! It didn't look crisp and clear. It looked hazy and fuzzy. To compare, I took a comparable video with my other camcorder and downloaded it into my computer. Much different. Better! Crisper! Clearer! What I had been used to. The second camera, let me say, is also a Sony, but one that uses mini-video-tape. I compared the size of the files downloaded on my computer, each roughly one minute long. Whereas the file from the old Sony was about 276 MB's, the file from the new camcorder was about 75 MB's, about one-fourth the size, more compressed. No wonder!! I called Sony, and registered my complaint. No comment or suggestion on how to improve performance. I called Vanns, the vendor, to arrange a return. The only good thing about the transaction was the great service from Vanns. A prompt refund. No questions asked. Of course, I had to pay the return postage. I saw some very glowing reviews on this product before I bought it. The only thing I can say is these people probably had nothing to compare the quality of the video to. Otherwise, I can't imagine how anyone can think that this is a camcorder that delivers high-quality or even decent-quality videos.
A $349.00 mistake!
A $349.00 Mistake! Purchased the Sony DCR SR-68 Handycam new from Amazon and had the opportunity to record about one hour of video under a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions during a recent six week trip. Much of the video turned out to be of extremely poor quality due to a number of apparent engineering deficiencies including a puzzling inability to focus in other than ideal light conditions and when using the zoom feature, inadequate compensation for bright light resulting in washed out video, and the fact that the LCD display is virtually impossible to see when attempting to frame a shot in daylight conditions. The Handycam has no viewfinder so all video must be framed using the LCD display. Any type of action shot is extremely difficult if not impossible. It is simply not possible to maintain contact with the subject using the LCD display because of glare and reflection. The scene selection and delete features proved to be the most useful because of the large number of shots that were unusable. My 9 year old Sony Camcorder is a bit more cumbersome but takes better video and is much more user friendly.
Great portability but small screen
A very light and portable camera - truly purse size.
Very easy to use.
Only downside is the very small screen size.
Poor replacement for my big old Sony Camcorder
I have been searching for a replacement for my Sony DCR-TRV310 Digital 8 which is a great camcorder but difficult to carry around when traveling. I do a lot of video editing on my older Sony Vaio RS530G PC, running on XP SP3 so I ruled out the new high definition cameras. I bought this camcorder in a store so I could return it easily if I did like its performance or format. In short, I missed the viewfinder; the LCD screen was impossible to see in sunlight and actually reflected a glare. The touch screen menu although easy enough to figure out was also difficult to see outdoors in sunlight and kind of cumbersome to go through the menu. It is akin to press one if you want English, etc. The video quality was poor with a bluish, grainy quality. Low light indoor video was very dark and amber. Actually my Sony Cyber-Shot takes better videos. It does not offer much in the way of faders/transitional effects or manual controls. I downloaded and printed the entire manual because the one supplied in the box was a pamphlet and offered no real technical advice beyond charging and powering up, shooting and burning to DVD. My ability to edit the video format was the biggest disappointment because my editing format of choice to trim video clips is Click to DVD and that is not compatible. I have small hands and still found the arrangement of touch and manual controls to be awkward. The still pictures I took outdoors were better than I expected.
I wish I could put my old Sony on a diet. After trying this out for a few days it went back to the store and I believe I will stick to tape and buy the Cannon HV40.
Great for business
After a lot of searching and comparing I decided to purchase the sony handycam dcr-sr68. I was starting a documentary business and did not have a lot of money to get going, so cost was a factor. I am extremely happy with the quality of video I get from this lightweight camcorder. Highlights: very lightweight, cost effective, incredible 60x zoom, great battery life (recorded over 4 hours and the battery was still going strong), very easy to use with the touchscreen, takes still photos that are good (not great) quality, easy to use touchscreen, software that comes with it makes it easy to convert the files to wmv files and you can burn directly to a dvd in one touch, internal memory is amazing-80gb internal and you can also add a media card. I recorded 4 hours and didnt even use half of the space. Downfalls: recording sound outdoors is not so good. You can hear yourself well, but others not so well. Indoors it is great. Overall, very happy!

JVC GZ-HD500
Whit the camera it's OK, but the edition software is very poor. I ask JVC about other software, but, from JVC Brazil they only said that's an imported product and, from USA JVC, I don't have any answer.
I try the software Vegas from Sony but it don't recognize the camera. Now I pretend try the Pinnacle. Can someone help me?
Amazing HD Quality
This camcorder is a replacement to a Sony DVD camcorder I had a few years ago. The quality difference is amazing. The quality inside is good in a well lit room and only average in a poorly lit room but that is typical with any camcorder under 1000. The outside quality is amazing, it really blows me away on DVD I made using the XP recording format. UXP is the best quality but XP is the best you can burn to a DVD. It looks almost blu ray disk quality, it will really blow you away. This is my 4th camcorder and the software included is actually not bad, if all you want to do create simple dvd's with it. It user friendly and has a few nice options, more advanced users will need to pick up better software but it is better than the basic software I have ever recived with any of my previous sony camcorders. You can even record in UXP format and have it converted just for burning to dvd purposes to xp format, that way you still have it in the best quality incase you ever get a Blu Ray burner which is also supported by this software by the way. I got this from Amazon for only $369, that is a amazing deal.
GZHD500 (good if you find it for $400 or less)
Cons:
Any photo shot (it is have 2 Megapixels) inside is extremely grainy, even in the daytime.

Recording longer than 23 minutes it is breaks into 23 minute segments.

Its a good camera if you are using it outdoors. This cannot be used
in doors, even with bright lights. The video is dark and granny.

The "laser touch" feature looks cool, but actually using it is awful. It's really nothing more than an up / down slider that glows blue, and is terribly inaccurate.

Not have light, no remote control.

The battery life is poor.

Not have a menu setting to get out the words in the display.

The snapshot and zoom buttons are a little uncomfortable.

The software is very poor.

Pros:
Full HD 1920x1080 Recording videos (outside only)
HDMI out put port is 1080p.
HDMI® (V.1.3 with x.v.Color(tm))
24Mbps High Bit Rate Recording
Advanced Image Stabilizer
20x optical zoom.
The camera size is comfortable unless you have a great hand.
Advanced Image Stabilizer
1.37 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
24Mbps High Bit Rate Recording
Konica Minolta HD Lens
80GB Built-in HDD
micro SD/SDHC Card Slot

Recommendations:
Use UXP resolution option always.
Use a category 2 HDMI cable always.

Panasonic HDCTM15 16GB Full HD Camcorder
HD images contain 6x as much information as standard images. HDTV has 1,080 horizontal scan lines, SDTV has 480. That translates into much higher resolution and much finer detail. With HD images on an HDTV, pictures are so clear and sharp that you can see textures. The shift in the industry from SDTV to HDTV is well underway. For shooting once-in-a-lifetime scenes that you want to capture in full beauty, an HD camcorder is the best choice. There's nothing more disappointing than shooting a once-in-a-lifetime event on video, only to discover that the images are blurry or poorly exposed because of backlighting. Panasonic's iA helps avoid problems in difficult shooting situations by automatically making the optimal camera settings and activating certain functions. For example, iA includes AF Tracking, a new function that "locks" on and follows a subject as it moves, so images are sharply focused and properly exposed. This technology is a huge help for everyone. Panasonic's advanced O.I.S. helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot, for both motion and still images. This system uses gyrosensors to detect even tiny amounts of hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate - all at an astounding 4,000 times per second. Because the system is optical, there's minimal loss of image quality even when viewed on a large-screen TV. In addition, to shoot high-resolution still images, the normal O.I.S. Mode 1 is joined by an O.I.S. Mode 2, which has a higher stabilization capability. The O.I.S. corrective lens shifts and stabilizes the image the instant that the shutter button is pressed, to enable greater precision in stabilization. You get all the beauty and minimal blurring. The TM15 features a 16x optical zoom. You can zoom close to catch dynamic shots of distant objects. And because the zoom is optical, there's limited image degradation. Also, Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. helps

The camera lives up to its early expectations of quality and ease of use. Read the manual and you can be up and shooting good videos in no time. Operates easily, easy to configure one of the multiple cables supplied to playback on almost any tv.

Battery life appears fine, although limited testing of the limits of battery life. Extra batteries available range in size from the included VW-VBG070 up to the VW-VBG130 & VW-VBG260. The VW-VBG260 is the biggest, but the battery when installed does not allow you to shut the lcd screen completely due to its size being in the way. Not sure the best way to verify that a brand of SD card will work with the unit. I tried two brands of 16gb cards and one worked and the other did not even though they were both class 4 speed.

People with bigger hands like I might have to get used to holding it such that you can operate the zoom for one handed use. The touchscreen is handy instead of having to always use many buttons to get to a function. A ready to shoot mode lets you get set for shooting and then by shutting the screen keep from wasting battery until you open the screen again to continue shooting.
Excellent Camcorder - Sharp and Clear Video
After seeing an impressive vacation video shot with this camcorder, I checked Amazon and had to buy it at the $212 price that day. No disappointments at all. Easy to use with many adjustments, but the intelligent auto mode worked perfectly for me. Video of our local 4th Of July parade when shown on a 65" HDTV was sharp and clear with good sound quality. I thought the 1080i video might be poorer than 1080p, but I cannot see any difference on my 1080p HDTV. The 2.1 megapixel still photos I took looked good, but I primarily wanted a decent camcorder. This little camcorder has exceeded all my expectations.
camcorder
Bought this for my wife before the grandkids came up on vacation, she really likes it takes great video and pictures. Software is also above average easy to use to edit and save your video's. After she had taken a few video's we hooked up to our Samsung led tv with HDMI Cable ( it doesn't come with the recorder ) video's and pictures were great. Would buy again, very good price.
Panasonic HDCTM15 a Pleasant Surprise
My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the movies produced by this little camera. A multitude of functions actually work to make creating quality clips much easier.

The sound quality is very good even including the ability to indicate how close to the camera the primary sound source should be. The anti-jiggle control works. It turns what would be a blurry shake into what appears to be a camera wobble.

Having 16gb built-in memory is a great feature. Especially for those times when you grab the camera and run but overlooks the fact that you left the memory card in the computer the last time you offloaded movies/pictures.

A pro is the very small size and light weight of the camera.

A con is also the light weight and small size because it can be a little difficult for a larger hand to get the camera in the palm where it best fits to operate all the controls.

It would be nice for the battery to have a larger capacity. Of course, there are many higher capacity batteries available for purchase.

I would never have guessed one could find this quality at this price.
Panasonic does it again!
$212, free shipping, no tax, for a Panasonic HD camcorder? What a deal. Panasonic's legendary reliability, quality and performance is here in spades. Video quality is amazing, the 'corder is so tiny it fits into a pocket, complete editing ability. It would be nice to have a wider wide angle lens, the microphone could be better, no remote control, some features (like fade) cancel every time you turn it off, but for this money, it's unbeatable.

Decent
I like mine. Could it be better, could it be more expensive? Think about it. I'm glad to have the high def, looking forward to seeing the high def quality when I receive my HDMI-HDMI mini adapter. I also think the sound quality is better than should be expected when hearing through my PC. I would suggest this camera for my friends.

Looks good to me
I bought this as a gift for my 12 y/o son. For the price, I didn't expect much. I thought it would produce cellphone quality video and images.

I am actually very impressed with it. It is easy to use and produces quality results for my 12 year old. I see no image shaking at all and he has only shot video and images hand-held.

Not sure why others are unsatisfied. It is a $[...] camera and produces great results for the price.

If you are looking for top-of-the-line videos, buy a top-of-the-line video camera. This is a small, portable, easy-to-use device that produces great results for the money.
Do Yourself A Favor - Find Another Camcorder
First off, let me clarify that I am a still photographer, not a videographer. That having been said, I purchased this camcorder for its price, the HD capability (LOL) and the fact that it was easy to use. The camera hit the mark on 2 of these 3, but failed miserably on the other.

Saying that this camcorder is HD is like saying the express stagecoach is high speed transportaiton in the day of 200+ mph trains & planes. I returned the unit the day after I purchased it having played around with the camcorder to familiarize myself with it and recording 1 event.

I recorded the event in 1080P mode, the best quality that the camera has to offer. The event was my daughter and a friend making a presentation with a slide show on the screen to their left. I set up so that the wide angle would get the girls and the screen and the zoom would pretty much fill the screen with the girls. (NOTE: The zoom on this unit is very limited, but you should know this from playing with it in the store pre-purchase, so this is not a factor in the negative review.) I tried to give this a 0 star rating, but Amazon only goes as low as 1 star.

When I transfered the files to my computer, I was unimpressed with the wide angle picture quality and when the unit zoomed in on the girls, you could not even recognize them due to all the noise in the video. The sound quality of the unit was pretty good, but the picture was apallingly bad. Figuring that this must improve if I plug it into the HDTV in the living room, I did and the results were equally bad. When I took the camcorder back, the vendor has a policy of 15% to restock. I showed them the video on one of their computers and they agreed that it was not as represented by the manufacturer and they waived the restocking fee.

I must say, I had no problems with the buttons or the build quality of the unit that others have noted, but the purpose of any camcorder is to provide quality video. When the manufacturer goes out of its way to indicate that the unit has "HD" quality, one expects the results to live up to that claim. I actually get better video from my even less expensive, entry level Coolpix still cameara that I leave in my briefcase for those times you just need a camera and don't have the good stuff with you.

Conceptually, having a small video/still camera handy is a great idea - if it can deliver on the image quality. I am not sure if others have made it work in the small form factor camera, but JVC needs to go back to the drawing board.
Disappointed
I just got the camcorder 2 weeks ago. Tried it today, horrible. returned it immediately. I don't know how JVC could make this junk. The other camcorders are so good!

Best HD CamCorder for family use
I am Glad I bought this Camcorder in time for my grand daughters's first Birth Day, and my 65the birthday.
I am an experience camcorder use - since VHS bulky (Panasonic) one to small cartridge tape(Canon.
this is my first HD camcorder and Amazon price was the lowest for the highest quality cancoder with 80GB hard drive.
Movie quality is the best, sharp clear and picture qaulity great.
Very easy to use and inside the house with the family event did not use any flood light and automatic adjustment took the best movie and could not tell different shades or low light and sharpness was uniform.

I recommend everyone buy this Camcorder - it is the best quality and with low price than other camcorder.
Thanks Amazon website for giving me such a good bargain.

I bought it 5 month ago. exactly after 5 month its zooming stuck. i call customer service they said, you have to pay approx 45 dollar for service and part are free. we are not offering warranty after 90 days. this is a sucks camcorder. not recommended.
looks good on tv but not on the computer
i thought this camera was fantastic when i was making a video for my brother. easy to use, small, pretty simple to figure out with a little exploring the options on the camcorder. i would take a peek at the portions i had recorded every little while on the tv, and they looked like a normal home video and sound was good. i was satisfied enough with the quality on the tv expecting it to look the same on the computer. but when i transfered videos to the computer to edit and make the movie out of them, everything looked poor quality and grainy. now, i do have a high def screen on my computer, so i tried my laptop (which is just a regular old good qulity 3 years ago), and had the same results.

so overall, i was 150% satisfied untill i saw the end computer result. and where are you going to store all your old videos but on the computer? so if anyone has a fix for this problem, i'd LOVE to know! it would save me a LOT of time and effort and it would bring my review way up again.
Worst video quality I have ever seen on a camcorder.
One of the worst camcorders Ive ever seen. This just isn't good enough to match some of the better standard def camcorders like from Canon, and certanly is NO competition compared to the really good high def cams out today. This camera's video quality is probably the worst i've ever seen on a standard def cam. The only clear and vivid thing about this camcorder are the reasons why you shouldn't get it.
The picture is very soft and the colors are very washed-out and under saturated. It does have a 60 gig hard drive, but it's video quality isn't worth it. Even on HQ mode the quality still looks bad. One extremely bad down grade from Sony's previous DCR-SR models is a smaller CCD. Instead of the usual 1/6" CCD, Sony decides to make it smaller and change it to a 1/8" CCD. They also claim that its an "ADVANCED HAD CCD" which supposedly gets you better video quality out of smaller CCDs, but I see no difference. In low light, this thing is useless! If you go into a dim lit room the only thing you will see is pitch black and little pixels dancing around on the screen. The menus on this camera are hard to navigate through. Just to turn on one function is really a hassel. To tell you the truth, the only reason this camera sells for $250+ is because it has the name Sony on it. I messed with the camcorder's settings for three months trying to get the best video quality I could out of it, but nothing worked. After three months of disapointing video quality I finally returned it. Im never buying a Sony camcorder again. This is clearly not the best camera to get.
Small, Light, Crystal clear image
This is compact enough to carry around and at the same time big enough to get a good grip.
The 60 GB HDD is enough as I download the videos often.
The clarity is amazing in outdoors as well as indoors and even at night.
The only thing I do not like is, the LCD must be used all the times!
Touch screen works well....even my 4 yr old can operate this on his own

Zoom is excellent!
Such a Bargain
Haven't had the time to totally check out in true life exp. yet but have used it bird watching and it is working very well. love the fact that you can switch between still and movie at the touch of a button. The zoom works very well also. Can't wait to take a trip where I can really take advantage of all it's features.
