Always on hand...
I got this as a gift so I can video on the go. I keep it in it's case in my purse all the time. The transfer software is easy to use and there is an iphone app I use so the videos are easy to access on my phone, and my husbands phone. I love the flip channel you create through the software so that when I save to my channel and delete from the device I can access the video from my phone or any internet access. This is easy to use, easy to store so that it is with you all the time. The only disadvantage is the zoom. The viewing on the the device is excellent, but when watching on computer or tv is doesnt look high-def. Over all I would still recommend as it is great to have with you all the time.

Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes
I bought the Flip HD post Christmas, after Amazon sent one of their usual emails.
After carefully reading over all the reviews this is the one I chose and I am very happy with my choice. My family took it on a ski trip and captured some wonderful shots of everyone skiing, with no problems with the sound! Priceless.
The picture, color, and sound are wonderful. Only two things I would like to see improved is the zoom and some sort of stabilizer. I purchased a tripod but it is not good enough. I have a Panasonic HD that I have used and loved for years, but I wanted something more portable and this does the trick. I will use the big one for the zoom and the lengthy events such as a play or sporting event.
The only "problem" is the battery system. The camera will tell you how much time you have..but that is memory-not the power.
Should you recharge without depleting the battery energy then the battery capacity is reduced forever. I bought rechargeable batteries that can be charged at any time in just 10 min. and lasts as long as the camera memory. This also gave me spare in case I don't have time to recharge.
I would certainly purchase this again...especially now that the price has come down in the past 7 months.

A Very Good Buy
I purchased this camera for a Caribbean cruise. It was the best portable camera that I could image. I carried it in my pocket and took it out for recording. The quality of the video is fantastic.

I had a problem with it while on vacation. I took the camera out to record found that the screen was mostly black with some lines. I recorded anyway and found that it continued to record but the monitor was shot. This was after 8 days of use. I contacted support and they had me to try some things but they didn't work. I requested a replacement and they replaced the camera. It took a couple weeks but they honored that warranty.

I recommend purchasing this camera. The editing software that is in the camera was limited but easy to use to edit my video. Here are two videos recorded on the Flip Ultra HD and edited with its software. The camera has rough video when you walk and record, as you can see in the video, but this is great for family get togethers. It's so easy to carry.

A Disappointment
I was very excited to get this camera. I read the reviews about the battery problems and thought; "Well there isn't a large enough group of reviewers with that problem to worry me about my choice."

Boy was I wrong.

The battery wouldn't charge from day 1. It would get very hot when it was plugged in to my computer. It would give me battery error after battery error. I tried every remedy I found online and nothing worked. A whole lot of people online have posted about this problem. It is rampant with this camera.

I underwent the terrible process of sending it back to Flip for support. Their customer support is horrendous. The website is poorly laid out, and it is nearly impossible to contact the company. I finally sent the camera back after emailing several technicians (who refused to admit that it was a very prevalent problem with their product).

Several weeks later, I got a refurbished camera in a white box. I was happy. Problem solved, right?

Wrong. The replacement camera HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. I now have to use AA batteries to operate the camera, but this thing burns through batteries like wildfire. I had a terrible experience with this camera and cannot recommend it to anyone.

*Here is a review of the other features of the camera, aside from the terrible battery.

It records decent video and the sound is good too. The USB flipout dongle is nice in that you don't have another cable to carry around. However, it is not flexible, so I couldn't plug it into my Macbook because the camera body got in the way. I had to get a separate wired USB hub out to use it without breaking the plug or my computer. The included software is terrible. Clunky, slow, and idiotically designed.

Bottom line: Stay far, far away.

Love this!!!
I purchased this camera because I am a coach and wanted to be able to film my team performing and easily share the video. I love it for that and it is so amazing.

The only thing I hate about this product is it doesn't come with an actual manual. You have to download it. Everything else is perfect. Can't wait to use it all season. Used it at camp and loved it.

couldn"t be easier
I purchased this camera to video a wedding - easy, easy, easy!!! It took about 10 minutes to figure out, record a test video and voila!!! played on the TV. The picture quality in both video and still camera format was great. The download of the "viewing" software took a bit longer - not very non-geek friendly, but I managed it on the 2nd go round. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting a simple, easy to use and understand video camera that it a hair bigger than my blackberry - I should have gotten a different color because I tried to answer the camera when my phone rang. By the way, the price was $50 less than the same model at Best Buys.

great for the electronically challenged
My husand purchased a camcorder last year and threw out the manual since he just figures these things out. I would have had trouble even with the manual but now I was totally stumped.

I kept reading reviews on the point and shoot camcorders and finally tried the Zi8. It was irrisistable at the price on Amazon. Even I could figure out some things withot the book. SIMPLE controls and buttons. To comprehend this you shold know I really am a moron when it comes to gadgets. I took it to church and recorded a skit for practice. My husband snatched it to put on the computer and was amazed at the quality, especially since it was my first time holding and following movement with a camcorder. Then he said he couldn't believe it had CMOS (huhh??) at that price. He spun it on a Cd and the pastor said it was good enough to put on the internet.

Soon he borrowed it and the battery lasted over 70 minutes of steady shooting at a seminar, although it already had some time on it.
Now he borrows it frequently and I would bet we will own another one soon.

Won't Find A Better HD Camcorder For This Price!!!

This is my first HD camcorder (except for my T1i DSLR). I searched around for reviews on which pocket HD camcorder to get for a good 3 weeks until I finally decided on the Zi8.

I finally decided on the Zi8 for a couple of reasons.

1. External mic opportunity
2. The ability to use my own memory cards (up to 32gb)
3. I thought the picture quality was better than that of the comparable Flip models when watching over 100 different videos

The results I have got so far are absolutely wonderful in my opinion. There are a couple of things I suggest you steer clear of.

1. Low light. This isn't a $5,000 camcorder. Like most other "cheaper" camcorders the Zi8 does not like low light at all. It's best to be outdoors or in a well lit room.
2. Don't zoom. The Zi8 only has digital zoom. It does not have optical zoom. When you use the digital zoom you can most definitely notice the picture degrading.

There are some things I don't like about the Zi8 or wish it had. For one, the lens is always exposed. This can cause dust, smudge, fingerprints, etc. to get on the lens. If you watch the video I posted you will notice a smudge in the upper right hand corner of the video when the bonfire is going. Since the camera is so portable and easily gets put into your pocket, it's quite easy for it to get dirty. I don't want to carry around a camcorder bag as the whole purpose of getting such a small camcorder was it's portability. With that in mind, I did buy a small neoprene carrying case for it, but it's a little bulky in my pocket now. I just wish there would have been some kind of lens eye that would open and close when in use or not in use.

I haven't been able to get the software that is preloaded on the Zi8 to install on my PC. I am running Vista 64-Bit and meet all the requirements listed. Since I already had video editing software loaded on my PC I didn't care too much about it not working. Although from reading other reviews, apparently the software on the Zi8 is absolutely worthless anyway. I would suggest purchasing your own video editing software.

As far as the layout of the Zi8. It's extremely easy to use and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to change the settings. There's really nothing you need to know to make it work better or more efficiently. I pretty much left everything the same as far as the settings. It has the option for "face detection" and "image stabilization" neither of which I believe work that well. There is really no need for these to be on but it doesn't really change anything if you turn them off.

Choosing which setting for video is a matter of personal preference. I tinkered around with each and decided to leave it on 720p @ 60/fps. This, in my opinion, gives the smoothest video at the best quality. The 1080p option would be OK if you had the camera mounted on a tripod and were using it for a presentation of some sorts or recording something that didn't have a lot of movement. The 720p 30/fps wasn't too bad. You can notice the video and/or panning isn't quite as smooth. This is why, like stated before, I always keep mine set at 720p 60/fps. The video quality is awesome and when panning, either with a tripod or handheld, it looks smoother than the others. You can see examples of this in the video.

The sound on the Zi8 is very sub-par. This is to be expected for a cheaper camcorder. I definitely wasn't expecting great sound recording from the Zi8. It only has mono capabilities, BUT, you can plug in an external mic. I purchased a Sony ECM-DS70p off eBay for around $4. This exact mic sells for around $40-$50 on Amazon. I have yet to test out the mic outside, but inside the sound is vastly improved.

Overall, I am extremely happy with the Kodak Zi8. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a well priced HD pocket camcorder. You really can't go wrong with it. Just keep a steady hand and you'll have great results.

Kodak Zi8 vs. Flip MinoHD
I have both the Kodak Zi8 and Flip MinoHD at work. When buying one for home use, I chose the Kodak Zi8. The image quality is much better. I like the microphone jack on the Kodak as neither of these cameras have great microphones. Image stabilization is better on the Kodak if the zoom is not used. On both cameras, a steady handheld image is nearly impossible when using the zoom. I like the included editing software too.

This is such a good product, the shortcomings are really disappointing. To keep the cost down, the Kodak comes with almost no memory. When adding in the cost of buying a memory card, this is a more expensive camera than the Flip. I wish this recorded mp4 instead of Quicktime. The base of the camera is rounded, precluding the possibility of setting this camera on a table while recording - which can be done with the Flip. If you have a laptop with a USB port exactly where the one in the Kodak instructions indicates, then the USB connection on this camera is convenient. Otherwise...I have to prop up my computer, turn my camera upside down, and use other objects to hold the camera in the awaward position needed to connect this camera to my computer. Wish the editing software included some free stock music like the Flip software has. Many of these design flaws seem so obvious, I am hoping Kodak will fix them on a newer model soon. Despite knowing these flaws, I still bought this over the Flip MinoHD.

Great value with only 1 con
I really like this camera!

The only problem I found is that the literature does not indicate an auto-shutdown of 3 minutes of idle use, in order to save battery life(?). I had originally bought this camera to mount (in an unreachable place) and a remote control to operate it. As the remote control cannot turn the camera on or off, once the camera shuts down after the 3 minutes without use, one has to MANUALLY turn it back on. This is a real draw back if you want to use it remotely.

Zx3 Practical HD for family
Prior to a Florida trip this year, I bought this already having an Zi8 so we would have video capabilities at the water parks, ocean. Very nice video quality outdoors in daylight is truly the HD quality I wanted. Should not expect that degree of quality indoors, in low light situations and will not likely find it even in more expensive camcorders. Picture quality is okay. I really have no use for the Zi8 as its more square design makes it a little less easily "pocketable" and square corners increase likelihood of damage in falls. Would not spend $1000 for a camcorder that might produce a marginally better quality.

Excellent camera for water sports

I wanted to have a low cost replacement that produces wide screen HD video and is suitable for water sports. Our family goes to the pool a lot. My son is on a swim team and the water proof part is a real benefit. I can make a movie of his swim meets, or dive for an underwater movie. Then he can see his performance and improve.

We also used the camera in outdoors swimming in a river. The still camera came in handy where no other camera can go. The quality of the video seems to be a bit below the FlipHD, however the materials are much better quality and the camera comes with all that's needed including HDMI cable. There is also a remote control for $10, which is really nice when you want to review the movies on the TV.

The format of the movies is MOV, which is a bit of a hassle. MPEG would've been better.

In low light the camera performs inconsistently, but meets my expectations. I bought the camera with an Amazon offer for a free 8GB memory card, so with that the price was comparable with Flips, but in addition you get water proof, 720p/60 frames video for faster action, cables, great kodak rechargeable battery high quality built unit, no cheap materials.

Great little camera
This is exactly what I wanted in a camera and for the right price. I didn't want another large bulky camera to carry around since I won't give up my Nikon D5000 and that goes everywhere. The Kodak camera is great for just the short videos of the kids I want, I am not filming an entire family vacation. Though I put an 8 GB memory card in the camera and it will take over 2 hours of video. I have never really used a video camera and having an image stabilizer was important to me so my shaky filming wouldn't make me sick, it works great.
The only two things I don't like so much - the battery life isn't that great so you have to be careful to make sure it is charged if there is something important to film. I plan on getting another to have on hand. The second thing is that filming close up isn't that easy cause you can't zoom out very far. But other than those two things I love this little video camera and the fact that I can take it around water is great since my Nikon isn't going anywhere near water.

I won't bore you with a long review but rather point out what I found to be most important. I used this camera for a week in Orlando Florida at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios, and Wet N Wild. I bought a neck lanyard and was good to go.
POSITIVES
1. Very Very light and Compact, fits in small pockets. A+
2. Very Very easy to use controls and buttons. A+
3. Video quality is amazing. I primarily used 780p 60 Frames Second setting A+
4. Purchased a 16 GB Card and was able to record up to 3 hours 780P video. Over 6 hours standard video A+
5. Software was easy to install and use.
6. Good still picture quality, face recognition, OK zoom, and image stabilization. A-
7. Comes with an HDMI cable!
8. WATERPROOF, although was having to constantly un-fog the lens A-
NEGATIVES
1. Average battery life. BUY AN EXTRA BATTERY! I ran out of battery after 6 hours in Universal Studios with only moderate use. C+

A nice little camcorder
When our first daughter was born, we bought a nice coke-sized camcorder. At the time it seemed so small in comparison to the ones that our parents had when we were little that were the size of a briefcase.

But as we have traveled in the last three years to see grandparents and vacation, that camcorder has been left behind because we don't have room for it - it seems bulky with all of the other kid gear we have to bring with us.

Which is what I love about the flip. Its size. It is so compact that we can slip it into my purse or diaper bag and it hardly takes up any room.

I also love that it is so simple - it has just a few buttons so it is easy to operate - even my almost three year old can do it! And I love that when you plug it into your computer, the software just pops up and you are easily able to view or download the videos. I have also been really impressed with how long the battery lasts too - we shot dozens of videos before we had to charge it.

I don't think that it has the same quality as our other camcorder and I do not like that there is no way to cover the lens - I am always paranoid that I am going to scratch it - but I am glad we have it as an option.

Don't get scammed by this product
I got the Flip mino hd while on holiday as it was small and i thought easy to tote around.It barely lasted the holiday before the it stopped charging.and the wonderful "support" that they tout on their website?not at all helpful.you will get alot of "we apologise for the inconvenience" with NO help to you at all. I reluctantly give this product one star.This product doesn't even rate that.

Good but there is one (sorta random thing) you should know
Like the camera but if you want to burn videos to a dvd to specifically play in a dvd player you need the software to do (convert) it.
I was pretty disappointed that flip didn't include it - I think they should have provided something that would have covered that base. I don't think it is too much to ask.

Still an engineering marvel - and very handy
Flip created the "instant camcorder" concept. Despite being acquired by Cisco, Flip has continued to innovate. From the viewpoint of someone who appreciates technology and good engineering, the Flip MinoHD is impressive. In a very small package, you can get not quite two hours of good 720p HD video with pretty good audio.

The key thing is to remember that the Flip MinoHD is not a replacement for a full sized camcorder. It has many limitations that its much bigger brothers don't have, which I'll discuss later on.

For convenience the Flip MinoHD is hard to beat. Press one easy to access by intent (but difficult by accident) button to turn the unit on and another button, this time a big red one, to start recording. When that action breaks in front of you, whether it's your kid doing something cute or a demonstrator getting beat up, you're ready to go in an instant. Getting the Flop into action is a lot faster than the process you have to go through with some point and shoot cameras, cell phones, smartphones and even many camcorders.

The 2" TFT LCD viewfinder is adequate for the purpose and the unit is wonderfully small: just about 2 x 4 inches and weighing 4 ounces. The f2.4 lens is protected by a what appears to be a glass cover and the unit could be carried in a pocket, though a small case would be better. The viewfinder, by the way, is very usable in bright daylight.

The field of view I would estimate to be about the equivalent of a 35mm or perhaps slightly longer lens on a 35mm camera. For me, that is too narrow. I would personally prefer a wider field of view. Most of my video is shot from nearby, across a table and such. But I have yet to find a camera in this class with a wider lens. Minimum focus is 0.8 meters, about 2 feet 7 inches, which is good. The 2x digital zoom substantially degrade the image, which is true of all digital zooms.

The 720p out is absolutely outstanding and blow-you-away good. I output it through a mini-HDMI cable (not supplied with unit) and it literally took my breath away. Footage of a person shot under indoor lighting was well balanced in terms of color and sharp as a tack.

The unit turns on with a side switch which, as I said, is difficult to trigger by accident. A large red mechanical button starts and stops recording, while six capacitive buttons handle playback, delete, zoom, navigation and volume functions. The capacitive buttons are about average in terms of sensitivity.

Recorded audio using the "built-in wide-range stereo microphone" is surprisingly good. The built-in speaker is adequate for reviewing playback on the camera.

Charging is handled by a flip-up USB connector which is actuated by a slide switch on the side. Recharging with USB takes about 3 hours. I personally prefer to use a standard USB extension cable, so the unit is not hanging in mid-air from the built-in connector. Such a cable also allows you to use a standard 5v AC adapter. The battery will hold a full charge for several weeks.

When you first connect the Flip MinoHD to your computer, you have the option to download the FlipShare software from the camera to your computer. This applicartion provides you simple download capabilities, basic editing functions and the ability to share the video on major social networks. Like most such software, it is somewhat primitive, though usable.

The internal Lithium battery is allegedly capable of powering the camera for two hours. I'd strongly suggest that you plan on something more on the order of 90 minutes to avoid disappointment. Collecting that much video of an event is unusual, so 90 minutes or somewhat more is probably going to be enough.

In a world of point and shoot cameras, smartphones and small camcorders capable of HD video, does the Flip still have a place? Yes. As a single purpose tool, it is much faster to deploy than any of the alternatives, is smaller than most and produces outstandingly good video.

Does it have failings? Of course. Low-light performance, as you might - and should - expect is not very good. The digital zoom is smooth, but like all digital zoom effects, degrades the image. Other than those two factors, which would be common to any device like this, the Flip MinoHD is simply outstanding.

Very nice, high quality, works/feels good.
This is an excellent product for what it is, and definitely could replace a larger/bulkier traditional cam-corder for many people.

I think perhaps it's greatest value would be as a first video camera for someone who is less tech-savvy and doesn't want to have to learn a lot of complicated video editing software in order to be able to do anything with the result.

Power users though will probably find this device redundant as they may already have comparable features and quality in video recording with a smartphone, etc. I can't see any reason to have one of these and an iPhone 4 or current Android-based phone for example.

But in terms of features, quality, ease of use, the Flip MinoHD is a very nice and satisfying little device that I've had a lot of fun playing with, and I can say that if this is the type of device you're looking for, then you won't be disappointed at all.

Slide HD & Warranty are both GARBAGE!!!
The USB Drive would not connect to the computre after two months. The company stated that it was "damage" and would not honor the warranty. I would NOT recommend this camera. It is expensive and Cisco will not honor their one year warranty if the device fails. I had to pay $80 to have it serviced.

The Flip is great
Having used the original Flip I decided to upgrade to the latest model, this is without doubt the easiest Cam corder I have ever seen, a child could use it

huge disappointment!
i bought this camera a few days ago because i had left my other little camcorder at the lake and needed one to use immediately. i bought this one because of the features, size, etc.

i tried it out for a few short recordings,was pleased with the quality of the pictures, charged it up and took to an event that i really needed to record. it recorded for 35 minutes and locked up. i could not get it to work or to shut off. it finally shut off when the battery died.

there is no recording of the 35 minutes that it did record but the camera shows that i only 3 hours and 24 minutes left out of the original 4 hours to record. it is using the space but does not have the recording.

the software it installed on my computer also shuts down everytime i try to use it.

i am disappointed and frustrated and will rush down to best buy tomorrow to return it before the 14 days (what happened to 30 days?) is up.

please don't take the risk of buying this. i had not read the reviews before i purchased and i wish i had.

Great camera Love the compact size
The pocket size camera is fantastic. I can take it anywhere so easily. The user friendly software to save and share video is so convenient.

The item ordered has not arrived July 30, 2010
I am somewhat frustrated and upset to be sent review notices and the item never arrived. Emails have been sent to the retailer to no avail. I would like to know what happened? Is there someway of tracking the item? It is lost, stolen, or being shipped via the Panama Canal?

Flip Video
Flip Ultra Camcorder, 2nd Generation 120 minutes is easy to use, one page of instructions,that's all. Very small and lightweight. The video clarity and brightness is good. I have not transfered to the computer or TV yet so can't give an opinion on that aspect. Chose this model as I was not sure of my computer or TV capability. I also like it because it uses AA batteries, nothing fancy to charge, When batteries are dead,just change. Also it is a little thicker than the Mineo, so I felt there would more stability when holding it. That's what I like, ON- PLAY-OFF.

I purchased two camcorders. One for myself and one as a gift. Love them. A good buy and a good camcorder. Easy to use even a 6 year old could operate it.

fantastic flip
This product is very compact and easy to use. My husband intends to use it while flying his ultralight and we think it will work wonderfully. Can't wait to see the results. Our granddaughters love to take video with it. Definitely a good purchase.

Cheap, But Overheats
In theory this camcorder seems like a dream come true. Unfortunately in practice, it has one major fatal flaw - it overheats often and automatically shuts off. If you're intending to use this camcorder to record your child's hour-long recital or some other lengthy and continuous event, chances are it won't work. I tried running it continuously for an hour-long event and every ten to fifteen minutes it would overheat and shut off, then reboot and start recording again, totally ruining the footage I shot. It may be fine for shooting short clips in high definition, but I would not recommend this camcorder and actually regret the purchase.

Excellent camcorder
I have used this camcorder for several weeks and it has performed very well.
I am very satisfied with it. The only negative thing is the image stabilization
is not very good when zooming in very close to something that is far away. But that
is easy to fix, just don't zoom in so much.

Great value for true HD
My experience with this camera is in sync with Mr. Courtney's--"tends to have a lot of focus problems" is true, but so is "All things considered, this is a fine product." I have no problem with the zoom, and I love the 1080p 60fps. You can spend 3x on a camera with that resolution and perhaps the auto-focus will work better, but I'm not certain. I'll add that the USB interface is smooth and simple on Windows Vista, and I can highly recommend Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Suite.

The camera is tiny and light. People have criticized the lack of an integral lens cap, but they give you a cap and a string to tie it to the camera. I love that the screen is not touch-sensitive (I hate that in a camcorder). The controls are very intuitive. From simple buttons on the back, you can RECORD video, take a PICTURE, PLAY back your clips, or see the MENU. The SET button is a joystick for navigating the menus and you push it to select--it works like the little red button mouse on IBM laptops.

One thing to mention, in case it isn't clear: It offers a manual focus option, but you need to set it, using the menu tree, before filming. You can't be filming, notice that the auto-focus isn't keeping up, and switch to manual focus and dial in the focus you want. I wish it had a mic in or at least a headphones out, too, but not at this price, I guess. I'm a big fan of this camera for the price, but it needs a few features to earn a 5-star rating.

This Camcorder Rocks
WE purchased the Sanyo VPC-FH1A. We originally purchased it so we could connect the camera to our Apple computers at home. We had already purchased a more expensive JVC from our local Fry's retail store. However after getting it home we found out it would not work with the Mac.

Since we were leaving in a couple of days for a trip to Yosemite we needed something quick. The price was low and it seemed to have a long list of features. I can tell you that after using it for 2 weeks in all sorts of conditions including very low light, the camera is outstanding. The image quality is simply incredible and so is the ease of use. Just set it for auto everything and hit record.

I can not say enough good things about this product or the Amazon service. The camera arrived as promised and in perfect condition!

Great camera/videocam
So far we have loved this video camera. My son is very into making videos and broke the sony minidv camera we had. This one is a great replacement and really speeds up the video import process. We are a Mac family and the native import feature to iMovie is great.
