excellent relatively little camera
Without trying to write a technical review, this camera is excellent. I own a Panasonic Lumix FX-18, an 18x zoom, but wanted one that I could carry in my pocket. While not tiny, it easily fits in a pocket without bulging. The shots we took on a recent trip to Aspen, Co were superb. Much, much better than any 3x zoom for versatility.
Excellent
I have two Sony Digital Cameras which I like but the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 with 12.1 MP and 12x Optical Zoom is truly outstanding and I can highly recommended.
A worthy replacement for my Canon 850IS
Just received this today ... Delivery was fast.

Never expected that the box package would be smaller than my previous Canon 850IS bought 3 years ago.

For the price I got for it, I know it was a bargain.

Even now, I await the release of the Lumix FZ100 (although I may wait a while before ordering it, want to see the reviews of others first)
Great W I D E angle Hi Def Camcorder - er - Camera (Made in Japan too)
I have a bagful of camera's by now and one of them is the earlier iteration to this camera - the TZ-3. Did not quite like its color rendering and that camera itself has now stopped working (hangs after taking a couple of pics). I wasn't sure if I should buy its newer cousin but some of its features were in line with what I wanted. Turns out - Panasonic has made great strides in the intervening years. For one thing - color is vastly improved compared to earlier models.

Now that I've used it for a while -

1) Its truly a great shirt pocket size, wide angle, Hi Def camcorder. Dedicated HD camcorders don't come with a wide angle lens and all they let you capture at your kids b'day is the cake and two people on either side. With this camcorder - you can capture the crowd and when you play it back big screen, it looks spectacular with true colors and high resolution. With the huge resolution increase possible with HD video, you also need a wide angle lens to do it justice.
2) It can zoom while taking video - all the way to 12X optical and to 16X with not much perceptible loss of resolution. The zoom is silent and does not grate into your sound (I don't note it). Focus is maintained rock steady through zooming. Zooming is slow, but that can be a good thing - most people zoom too much and fast in home video's - making home video's un-watchable.
3) Someone mentioned two zooming speeds. Really? I see only one zooming speed. Not like a camcorder where zooming speed can be varied by pressing more or less on the zooming lever. Takes me about 10 seconds to go from 1 to 16X - so its a bit slow.
4) Sound is good (stereo mike and dolby digital recording). Way way better than any other camera based sound I have used so far. The mikes are on top and prone to get blocked with my fingers now and then. Wish they were in front.
5) There are 3 selectable bit rates - I use the highest one and later join and recompress the videos with the free DIVX converter to MKV. I don't note any stutter or jitter in my video's.
6) With approx 12MB left in my card, the camera can take one and half hrs of video at highest bit rates, 2 hrs at medium and 3 hrs at the lowest setting. Thats plenty long. I use a class 4 card and works fine (AVCHD compression).
7) Low light performance w/o zoom is also tolerable. If you also zoom in low light, too little light reaches the sensor for decent images. By low light - I mean a dimly lit room. With normal lighting, the video's look fine.
8) Image stabilization is very good. I can even walk with the camera and take watchable video's.
9) Face detection works when taking video's - perfectly exposed faces in a backlit environment.
10) The batteries don't last very long when taking video's (haven't calculated how long). The batteries are electronically locked - so not any aftermarket spare will work. However - this one works fine (I just bought it) and the battery came fully charged -

11) Way way better than a Flip HD camcorder in every way. I am really puzzled why people buy Flips anymore.

Other notes -
1) Shape and size are perfect. You really want a rectangular box and not some crazy rounded shape like some of the Canon's (like SD 940 - which I own). Box is the only shape that will stand stable on its edge when you are trying to take a self timer shot. Fits fine in a shirtpocket with a cloth case on it.
2) Low light with zoom can make for really noisy pics (visible when you see them at 100%). (I mostly use my SLR for "in-home" pics)
3) Lens is really sharp. I can note the diff with SD940 (Canon).
4) Color is good.
5) GPS is essential and works well. Only way to remember where pics were taken 10 years from now. I leave it on at all times.
6) Made in Japan (not China)
7)Does not have a standard USB port - so you need to keep the special cable handy. Its not as big a con anymore since I rarely connect a camera to a computer.
8) Panasonic does give you firmware updates to improve the performance of the camera after you've bought it. I just updated mine from 1.0 to 1.1.
9) The viewing screen is very good , antireflective coated and visible in bright sunlight.
10) Flash pics are much better exposed than my Canon SD940
11) I hope it lasts - unlike my TZ-3.
12) Ergonomics, button arrangement and screen information is excellent. Nice metal throught I used to not like the one press video function, but with a kid in the house, I think its the way to go. There's lots more one can write on this camera but I need to keep this review short. I'll be happy to answer specific questions anyone might have.
Excellent Ultra Zoom Travel Camera with GPS
Light weight and long-range zoom are prerequisites for a travel camera but you don't want to sacrifice image quality. While not the quality of a DSLR and without RAW option, this camera produces very acceptable images. This may sound less than complimentary but as my other cameras are DSLRs, this actually speaks pretty well of the camera. What I really appreciate about the JPGs are the saturation and the lack of flaws. The 12x zoom starts at a respectable 25mm equivalent and the image stabilization makes the extreme telephoto practical to use. The blow away special feature is the built-in GPS. I've been laboriously geo tagging images for years but with this camera it's all automatic and so much fun! Admittedly the battery drain takes a toll when GPS is on all the time but with a couple after market spare batteries it's not an issue. I've really enjoyed traveling with this camera for all the reasons above but especially, because it's small, I always have it with me. And you know what they say about the "best" camera? The best camera is the one you have with you because otherwise there's no picture-taking.

An excellent choice for a megazoom.
I researched and read a lot of reviews before buying this model. It seemed that there is no ideal choice in compact mega-zooms. So much is crammed in that there have to be compromises. That said, I am extremely happy with this camera. So far my main complaint is that the full user manual comes on a CD. I'd like to have a printed version. About the only other 'complaint' I can think of is that there are so many features and modes that you can't possibly use them all and if you forget that you set it to 'starry night' you may not get such good action shots of the kids b-day party. The solution is to just leave the camera in its intelligent auto mode, but then I like to fiddle.

The pros say that the picture quality on compact zooms is not the best but to my eye I don't see a problem. However I did experiment some with lowering the resolution from 12 to 8 megapixels. Comparing the same scene shot at both resolutions and each magnified to show the same small part of the scene, if anything the 8-mpix picture is slightly crisper. BTW, an advantage of setting the camera to a smaller resolution actually extends the zoom range. At 8-mpix it goes to 24X, at 3-mpix to 35X!

The camera takes very good photos in dim light. It's nice to avoid the flash sometimes.
Almost great
I agonized over buying this camera because it was the only one that I was considering that was not in any stores for me to look at first. I bought it based on reviews here, and am glad I did. I've been using Sonys for the past 4 years and this is tremendously better in almost every way. Now that I've gotten the chance to hold it in my hand and use it, I am very glad I got this instead of the Nikon or Cannon.

So far I've had one problem - the cables to connect the camera to my PC don't fit into the camera. Neither the cable to download pictures nor the separate cable to download movies fit properly. I finally got the cable to attach into the camera, but when I plugged it into three different computers using three different operating systems, they all told me the device was malfunctioning and would not connect. Luckily one of my computers has a card reader and I can download that way. As great as their camera is, the Panasonic website is horrible to try to find support information. I sent them an e-mail and 4 days later got a response asking that I call and talk with them directly. If either the cables worked or the web site or customer service were responsive, I'd have given this 5 stars.
Amazing little camera ideal for traveling
We bought this camera for a trip to Africa where we are limited to 25 pounds of luggage. That made it impossible to haul around my SLR-type digital with the extra lenses. This seems to be a great alternative. The pictures are amazingly good for such a small and light camera. Of course, it can't compete with a large camera and lens, but considering everything, I am quite happy with the camera. I find the zoom feature a bit difficult to use as it moves so quickly from one extreme to the other. It takes some practice to learn how to zoom in on a subject without going too far. However, I took a photo of a dung beetle my wife spotted near our home and was very pleased with the result. The bug was crawling on the ground about six feet (2m) away and I was able to capture a full frame image. The result can be found at [...].

I am pleased to see that the video taken with the camera is at least as good as what I had before, though that is not the primary reason I bought the camera.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
Muy buena la calidad del video y el sonido, El zoom y la Relación de 12.1MP es espectacular .
More than expected
I wanted to replace mi old canon camera and Panasonic FZ35 is the best choice for me.

As others said, it`s excellent for an amateur photographer.

the only cons i see is that it`looks cheaper than others cameras in this price range because of the plastic used to build it, but no pay attention... buy it!!! you won`t repent.

Fantasic camera with flaws and high learning curve
Firstly, this is Not a 12x optical zoom or 16x zoom camera. It's zoom is 16x from the camera's starting point, which is not normal 1x vision. Meaning: when you look at something with your own eyes, and then look at it through the camera, that object is further away looking through the camera. Which allows the camera to take a wider field of view picture. But 2x optical zoom on the camera gives the same distance as if you are looking at the object without the camera. Which means 16x zoom is actually only 8x true zoom. And it's not even all optical! That was my biggest issue, as I was looking for a super-zoom camera and was disappointed to find out this truly isn't one.

Secondly, this camera has a High learning curve. Repeat: HIGH learning curve. Annoyingly so. The camera takes amazing pictures whenever the settings are correct for the situation. The problem is no one setting is correct for even just all the most common situations, and what you want to photograph can change on you fast. And the instruction book that comes with it has NO information on the dozens of different pictures modes and options. (I haven't checked the digital PDF document on the CD to see if there's a real instruction manual on there.) Here's just the stuff I remember right now of what I've found:
- The intelligent auto feature works well outdoors in normal light, but very not well other times.
- The "A" mode works indoors in normal light, but not low, and in sunlight.
- Portrait works in indoor bright light and outdoor shade or other low light.
- Baby 1 works best for high action, like dancing and sports.
- Self-portrait is the only mode that maintains the self-timer setting you choose between pictures.
- To get a fast recovery speed between picture taking you need to turn off image review.
- Oh, and more than half the time you'll want to set the flash to force off to get true colors!
- Etc, etc.

Last negative in my opinion is that the door that covers the battery and SD card and is held closed by a latch is very flimsy. I fully expect that's gonna be the first thing to break.

On the plus side:
- the video this camera takes is excellent quality. I was surprised at how much detail and how fine the resolution. Just keep in mind the camera can't light for a video, so it won't work in darker situations. But get a large SD card so you can take longer length videos!
- "MS" mode (which is My Scene) is handy because you can customize a scene and save it under MS for later use quickly.
- the navigation controls on the back of the camera are easy to learn and well placed for fingers.
- fits in a purse easy, and normal pockets too
- the panorama assist is very cool!

Overall, the camera is too flexible without giving help on how to make it work best, but when you come across the right settings it does fantastic stuff.
A good Point and Shoot
I have a significant amount of Nikon Pro level equipment and do some commercial photography. I wanted a P&S that was around $200 that could be used as a travel camera.

I have not used any of the scene modes, but the Intelligence mode and the aperture and shutter modes work extremely well. The zoom and stabilization work very well. Mostly importantly for me, the images are incredibly sharp. This is a camera you need to speed sometime with unless you want to only use the Intelligence mode - but remember this is a 25mm-300mm (35mm eqiv.) zoom and it can take advantage of all of the power built into this little camera.

It is not a substitute for a $3000 DSLR and f2.8 zoom, but it will take very good images if you spend some time learning all of its features. I'm picky about my images (website: [...])

Upto 13 x 19" printed images look good. There are lots of choices now in travel zooms, the ZS5 is a good one at a fair price point.
This camera is good enough that getting photoshop elements (less than $100) will let you really learn photography.
Because of the small sensor the limited f stop range is not a real problem when it comes to depth of field. F6.3 on a camera this size is like f11 or so on a DSLR.

The Intelligence zoom gives you 16X and it is very hard to tell from the 12x optical - looking at 100% resolution at the pixel level.
Given that this camera has a "super zoom" and lots of settings besides the Intelligence or program mode, I rate it very highly. With so many ways to configure this camera, the only problem I see is taking the time to use it to learn it before you head off to Europe or Africa, or on vacation here in the US.
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE
Great camera, but I received a broken battery charger, and the process to get it replaced under warranty has been ridiculous. Panasonic seems to have horrible customer service. I still haven't received a replacement charger after speaking to them several times. This is ridiculous. Even if I love the camera after using it for a while, I would never buy another Panasonic.
Disappointing
Unless you are a serious photographer this camera is a waste!! Automatic settings create lousy pictures. Very complicated to figure out. have not yet figured out how to make corrections so the colors come out closer to what they should be. Bought this because of the reviews and features, but the truth is in the pictures and they are lousy!!
Great camera - UNRELIABLE Panasonic replacement battery quality; POOR Panasonic customer support
First, the positive: Bought the camera (Panasonic Lumix DMZ-ZS5) in April 2010. I find this to be a great super-light "pocket" camera with an excellent feature-set (super-wide angle lens, optical image stabilization, intelligent resolution, large variety of auto-exposure settings, and manual exposure control). Several previous reviewers have done a great job explaining these features, so I won't repeat them here. I consider myself an advanced user, and I like to experiment with several exposures for each composition (whether using this point-n-shoot, or my SLR) - so I always like to travel with (at least) a couple of spare, fully-charged batteries. The battery that came with the camera seems to work as advertised and I am happy with its performance.

Now, the negative (or, why 2 stars?): Based on warnings from other reviewers (both here and elsewhere), I decided to buy two brand-new Panasonic replacement batteries (from the Amazon marketplace). I checked that these were IDENTICAL to the one that came in the original box (DMW-BCG10pp). However, owing to work/travel commitments, I did not get a chance to test out these new batteries for over 3.5 months. Just recently, I took the batteries out of their packaging, charged them, and tried to use them. But the ZS5 refuses to recognize the battery, shutting down within 3-4 seconds with the message: "This battery cannot be used". I waited several hours, recharged the batteries, and tried again - with the same result. I looked online and found that this message results from ID-secure feature built into their cameras to identify non-Panasonic battery packs.

I then tried Panasonic's web-site, but found nothing related to either battery problems or firmware updates for the ZS5/ZS7. So, I called Panasonic's customer/tech support (U.S.), hoping for some sort of a firmware download or some other "re-setting" procedure that would let me over-ride the camera error-message. To my surprise (and after three phone-transfers), instead of helping me figure out why TWO, BRAND NEW, Panasonic batteries were being rejected by their own camera, the rep kept insisting that I bought the battery over 90-days ago, so they cannot help me! Now perhaps I am naive, but I consider a battery to be brand new (within a reasonable time-limit, of course), as long as it has not been abused or used before - so it should not matter whether I bought the batteries 90 days vs. 110 days previously (at the time I called them).

During our extensive online review prior to buying this camera, the battery issue never come up. But now when I type the exact camera-error message in Google, I get several hits on this subject (all pertaining to Panasonic Lumix cameras). I am now stuck abroad with only a single working battery, and TWO BRAND-NEW batteries that don't work! Yes, I could buy two more brand now ones here, and fork out an even higher price - but what if those don't work either? And what if the only working battery fails at some point?

So, I wanted to put this warning out there that in spite of Panasonic's advertised "stringent" standards that purportedly make their batteries so much better, their camera's failure tolerance seems to be so tight that many of their own batteries fall outside of it! So, the lessons learnt for me are: (1) Don't expect that the "Panasonic" brand implies a guarantee of quality or reasonable customer/technical support; (2) If you plan to buy any Panasonic Lumix camera, or any of their new ID-secured battery based cameras, check online for 'battery cannot be used' or 'battery failure' for that camera before purchasing; (3) Be prepared to go through the hassle of trying out several replacement batteries, EVEN if you buy Panasonic's own; and (4) Thoroughly test out any spare replacement batteries you buy within the first 90 days (I guess the last one's a "DUH!").

I have never bought a camera outside of Canon before, and will most likely go back to Canon after this - I am afraid I cannot trust Panasonic to "do the right thing" at this point.Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD (Black)

You won't regret it
I love this camera, it's everything I was looking for. Great photo quality, great video quality. Really easy to take videos, and photos are a snap too. The turn dial is simple to navigate and so are the menu options. The battery lasts a very good amount of time. There are a few cons, but nothing major. It comes with a silicone covering for the camera, which makes the camera very bulky when it's on (I have been leaving it off), and it's not real easy to put on and off (which you have to do in order to clean or remove the SD card and/or battery. Also, there are two video formats, AVCHD and then basically an MOV file type. The AVCHD is better quality from what I can tell, but doesn't play on everything. My Panasonic TV which has an SD card slot could not play the videos. Luckily, I have a brand new Panasonic Blu-Ray player with an SD slot that plays the AVCHD files very well. However converting both formats to MPEG or uploading to YouTube had great results. If I had to buy another camera today, I'd make the same choice.
Nice Waterproof Camera
Pros: Waterproofing works well so far. Used it in pool and at beach (Florida). I followed directions and had no moisture issues. Great image quality. Quick shot to shot. Feels sturdy (it is heavy compared to most point and shoot cameras).

Cons: Zoom and shutter buttons are side by side...easy for finger to confuse. I am sure I will get used to it.
great rugged run and shoot camera
I chose this specifically for ease of use, carry on vacation/hiking/spur of the moment shooting. It is fast on and ready, pics are quite satisfactory although not honestly comparable to serious DSLR. Decent options for most basics.
Hint- you are spending some good change on a very nice camera- do NOT cheap out on memory cards! Get 2 at least 8GB class 6 cards to match speed of the device. That eliminates any possible complaints of lag time. Also get an extra Panasonic battery so as not to interrupt your fun on the run.
If you do not have a good tripod, do NOT cheap out on that either!

Finally, the drop test specs are on plywood- do NOT try to replicate on pavement!
Hope you have as much fun as I am having with this camera!
I just picked up a Fuji 10.2 digital photo frame to proudly display the gorgeous pics this camera creates. Next, I need a better image editor.....any suggestions?
Not waterproof under 10 meters. Not waterproof under 10 feet.
I specifically bought this camera for its waterproof quality after losing my last lumix to a leaky bottle of water in my backpack. I used it in six feet of water in a swimming pool yesterday and water leaked into the compartment that houses the battery and memory card and the camera is ruined. Very, very unhappy as this is the second lumix that has gone in the toilet for me in the past year. I am done with Panasonic Lumix.
Great compact camera, underwater, ruggedness a plus!
Purchased this camera to replace a red Casio EXLIM EX-G1.
This camera is larger but also provided a larger screen, stronger zoom lens, 30 vs. 10 ft underwater performance and better shock performance.
Also interesting is Panasonic also packages a translucent silicone wrap-around case that fits perfectly and exposes all the important stuff.
This case will go along way towards scratch proofing and additional shock absorbing. Wish they would have thrown in a screen protector as we well.

The orange color is not as bright as the images. It looks much more muted more of a "UT burnt orange" color than I initially expected.

Images are as expected from a 12MP P&S camera.
Since the lens is internal and does not need to extend when turning on, start-up times are fast.
Video is encoded at AVCHD lite (720p) or Motion JPEG.
AVCHD (110 MB/min) records the same resolution as MotionJPG (250MB/min) but at half the size.
When cameras first started using AVCHD lite, most video editing and player programs could not use it, but today iMovie works great.
Also installing VLC ([...]) will let you play the raw files.
MotionJPG files are limited to 2GB (8 mins)
AVCHD lite files can record to over 13 hours per file. (85GB files)
Video output is extremely usable both in and out of the water.

I will continue to edit and add to this review as I am able to use it more this summer.
Will try to cover battery life, still image performance, buttons and menus, pros/cons.

Thanks.

Good little point n shoot for the money
Good camera for a point and shoot. When I set it for sending pics on e mail it still is very large and takes quite a while to load.
Very nice camera if you don't need 2 batteries
It's a shame to give only one star to a very nice product, but to me, this very nice camera is useless. I need two batteries...always need a spare so that while I'm out, when the battery dies, I can continue shooting pictures. Sadly, Panasonic has crippled their cameras against use of any non-Panasonic battery, and THEY DO NOT SELL A BATTERY FOR THIS CAMERA (as of 7/28/10).

So, this very fine camera must go back to the store and gets a one-star rating from me. Very, very sad.

If you're interested in this camera and don't need a spare battery, buy it! If by now (whenever you are reading this review) Panasonic has a battery available, consider this a four-star review!
LUMIX USER FRIENDLY
I like the camera very much, it is quite user friendly, the only neg. comment would be that you can't zoom while videoing, but it seems great otherwise.
Love this camera for the price. Great Quality!
I recently purchased this camera a few weeks ago and so far I love it. The quality of the pictures is far better than any other camera on the market. If you an amateur photographer who loves to get out and take pictures, without having to lug a huge around camera around then is the perfect one for you. The only drawback to this camera is that you cannot zoom in and out while you're taking video, but other than that this is a great camera for the price. I highly recommend it!
Easy use quality photo camera
even the technologically challenged can take great pics with this camera. Feature we were looking for is the ability to take a photo in a shadowy area and have it come out clear and bright. Excellent camera for the price!!

Point-and-shoot camera
I ordered the Panasonic DMC-FH20 camera recently after reading many positive reviews. I needed a small digital camera for an upcoming European vacation and wanted something simple to learn to operate. The only misgiving I had upon receiving the camera was that the software enclosed with the camera was not supported by my computer operating program. (I have XP SP1 and the software requires XP SP2 or SP3.) I am not too concerned by this however, as I use Adobe Photoshop and just bring my photos into Photoshop from Explorer or My Computer. The camera does seem to be as advertised and seems simple to operate. The Intelligent (Ia) setting does its job and I have already taken some sharp, clear pictures with the camera. I like it!
I love this camera!
After a couple of months of reading reviews and researching different cameras I ordered the Lumix from Amazon after looking at it in a retail store. This camera is just what I was looking for. I liked the controls on this one best and it's very easy to use and small enough to fit in my purse. I have a lot of grandchildren and like the point and shoot feature and can take one picture after another quickly. The pictures are very clear. I love the red color and it was a great price. Nothing I dislike about this camera. I highly recommend it.
Great Camera, Horrible Customer Service
I loved the camera for a couple of days. Still love the camera. But Panasonic sent me a battery charger that was not working. So once the battery died, I couldn't use the camera anymore. And I have called Panasonic 7 times now, waiting on hold for over 30 minutes each time, and nobody has been able to legitimately help me. A week after starting these calls, they still haven't sent me a replacement charger. So, like I said, I love my camera, but I don't think I will ever purchase a Panasoic again, because the customer service is atrocious.
great little camera
I am very happy with this purchase. So many functions in such a small package
I still haven't learned all of them, but the sharpness and clarity of the photos are so much better than my previous camera. I am glad I listened to Consumer Report and customers' reviews. I used to work with several camera bodies and tons of lenses.
I loved all the options they gave me. But, they certainly didn't fit in a purse or pocket. I am having so much fun looking for pictures again...Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 8x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (red)
Love this Camera!
Purchased this camera as a replacement to a very nice, expensive Kodak which would not focus, and low light pics were terrible. Researched all point and shoots, and got some great feedback on this one. Took the chance, and so glad I did. Low light pictures are wonderful! Intelligent Auto does all the work especially when taking vacation pics. Just had my first grandbaby and the pics are so amazingly clear. Great camera! Great price! Easy to use!

Excellent Camera Real-World Amateur Photographer
We got this to replace our Olympus Tough which after a few years of faithful service was been passed down to the teenagers. Having just gotten back from a trip to the national parks in Canada, we could not be happier with it. The camera took great photos (at least to our untrained eyes) in a variety of conditions from sunrise to mid-day from sun to rain, indoors and outdoors, close and distance. With some 900+ snapshots behind us we are very pleased with the quality of both the pictures and the HD movies. Of course the best part of these rugged cameras is that you can take them (as we did) rafting, on the hiking trail, etc. and it is small enough to slip into a back pocket (where it won't break when you accidentally sit on it getting into the car). It already has a few battle scars from drops in the boat and off a mountain bike(doh!) but it survived no problem. And the videos of us going through class IV rapids with the camera recording are priceless. We have a higher-end camera but it is too delicate and too bulky to bring along when you are out in the "wilderness" or on the beach or even just banging around on your bike.

Likes
1) The controls are pretty easy to work - even with gloves on
2) The automatic mode (iA) does a good job of selecting the right scene
3) We had great luck with the image stabilization
4) Very sturdy and absolutely no problems with water (not sure I would take it snorkeling but worked fine for us getting very wet in the lake and in the rivers)
5) Very quick to turn on
6) Did I mention it takes great pictures and video?

1) You have to be careful with the waterproof seals to make sure there is no dirt etc when you close it (i.e. do not change the batteries unless you are in a clean, dry place!) [note to Panasonic: this certainly could be a bit more fool-proof like with two waterproof doors in case one fails]
2) AVCHD Lite was a pain and needed to be converted on my Mac to get into iMovie - initially it imported at the wrong speed and with audio and video out of sync but was salvaged with some downloaded conversion software and two hours of aggravation(I should have listened to the other reviewers and changed format before we started!)
3) You have to wait through that boring little presentation of waterproofing tips when you first turn it on and if you do not go through the whole thing it will keep coming back until you do - so watch all the way through the first time!

Bottom line, we love this camera and we are sure we made the right choice in replacing the old Olympus. You won't be sorry. We paired it with the Transcend 16GB card TS16GSDHC6-P2 and had all the room we needed for a 10 day trip. Enjoy!
great camera, needs a lense cover
Great solid camera, it's not 100% intuitive but easy enough to use. My only real complaint and a a pretty big one is the lack of cover for the lens. Its marketed as water proof and shock proof, for me that means mtn biking, snowmobiling but mainly water sports. When paddle boarding or kite surfing it needs to be in a pocket, however there is no lens cover so I am worried about it scratching the lens. It's too big to leave in a case and you wouldn't want the case to get wet. Great camera, bad design without a lens that automatically closes like almost every other camera on the market.
Huge Disappointment
It's probably harsh for me to give it a 1 star. Because it's not worse than any other P/S camera currently on the market. But I just hate the way Panasonic(and other manufacturers as well) boost the pixel count to entice consumer while pay no attention to those real weakness of most P/S: dynamic range, noise etc.

The picture taken with this camera is FULL OF NOISE. It's virtually useless on 14M pixel. Even under direct sunlight, ASA 50, noise is still everywhere. My Canon EOS-5D does a better job at ASA 1600.

I had an 5 years old TZ2 camera does a better job than this brand new shining one. Why? Because TZ2 has much less pixel count on the same size of CCD!

Manufacturers should stop pumping up pixels and deliver something real. It is absolutely nonsense to squeeze 14MB pixel into such a tiny chip. Even for APS size chips, 15~18M is the maximum
solid camera, best picture quality for its class...
Once I received the camera, I found it to be a versatile tool. It has a ton of scenes you can choose from to get a better shot and the intelligent auto option makes taking shots a breeze. I like the security it provides in terms of its shockproof, waterproof, and crushproof capabilities but it does not take amazing photos. The photos are a bit grainy and it definitely doesn't compare to my former camera the panasonic lumix dmc1 in terms of picture quality but for it's class of indestructible cameras....it is the best in it's class. Overall I would recommend it to another klutz like myself.
Highly recommend
This camera takes great pictures / videos. I am very impressed and would highly recommend.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FH20
I love this camera. the zoom quality is awesome. Many features I'm eager to experiment with. I would recommend it.
awesome camera
This camera is awesome. It's size is perfect for dinner dates, clubs, anywhere really. The zoom feature is the best-8x! I love this now I don't have to get
up close to get the perfect shot.
I love it!
ok let's keep this short and sweet: I've been using my camera for a tad over a month now. What I like most about the camera is the features, ease of use, and the overall picture quality.
What I dislike about the camera is that the auto white balance doesn't always work right. You have to play around with it but it's not a big deal for me. It takes awesome pictures with the macro feature, and even without it, they still capture a lot of detail. Really love the camera and would purchase it all over again.
Great Camera
I needed an easy camera with high clarity of pictures for my Europe vacation. It satisfied all my wants and needs for picture taking. I love this camera and would recommend it. I would even consider buying a higher technical version of this camera. The only drawback, which seems to be in all p&s cameras, is that when taking video the zoom selection you start with is what you stay with for that segment of video. LOVE this camera.
Panasonic Lumix
I have had this camera for a short period of time, but so far, I am impressed. It has a higher mp and better zoom than most cameras of this type. It is still small and compact, has a large viewing screen and the features are so easy to use. Also, the photos I've printed have been beautiful.

not much of a camera
This camera feels good in my hand, is nice and small, and I love the battery charger. To not have a long cord, but just a simple 2 prong arrangement is fabulous. And the big screen was great.
But I was very disappointed with the quality of the shots. I particular the shots even in focus are not sharp, which really surprised me from a Leica lens, as i used to have leicas and the lenses were sharp as a tack. This must be their low end line. i'm a semi-pro, so i know wherefore I speak on this; I've sold many of my photos. In addition, the colors are not accurate, and the camera is just plain slow.
No wonder so many people don't think they can take photos-so much equipment is inferior. Quite a let down for people I'm sure, as they would think it were they who are not good photographers, when the camra is largely at fault.
I was so excited to have a camera that I could just put in my pocket that I was willing to forego having RAW. But this is not for me.
I tried the larger one as well, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD, and that was better but not much. In comparison, the Nikon P6000 beats them both by a country mile, though it has a long cord on the battery charger, the battery runs out too quickly, and is a bit larger. Oh well. Worth the try but it's going back tomorrow with the other one..
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 14.1 mp camera
I love this camera. The pictures come wonderfully clear and sharp in beautiful color. The video is lovely. I did a lot of research before deciding on this model. It was a close decision between this model and the Canon. This camera had a great price and I'm so glad I got this.

Amazon did a good job delivering this product on time and the camera was in perfect condition.
compact camera with picture quality issue
I have used this camera for a few month, and produced 100+ photo

Good:
1. compact size
2. 28mm wide angle lends
3. low price

Bad:
1. Auto White balance miscalculates most of time for indoor photo with flash. Background appears RED or Yellow!
2. Flash is unusually weak. Object more than 6 feet away may appear "dark". This is my biggest problem.
3. It may under exposure in Outdoor pictures too

I don't ask for much for a compact camera but this camera has flaws:
1. metering & White balance problems
2. flash range is too short

Once my Canon A620 is fixed, I may have to give up this Lumix.
Good value
I've had other similar Panasonic cameras and been pleased with all of them. I'm looking for snapshots, not high art and this does what it does very well. I particularly like the wide angle, which, until recently, has only been available on much more expensive cameras. Panasonic has more competition now from cameras with similar features, but it is still a very good value for the money.
Dissapointing image quality
I used the Lumix FH20 for a few days in a variety of circumstances and ended up returning the camera because the images were just not acceptable to me. Image quality is somewhat subjective so many may find this camera does the job for them.

I wanted a small camera for general use since my normal camera (Kodak P880) is a bit large at times. I have been taking pictures for years and got used to the functionality and results of an SLR, but have to admit I miss a lot of photo chances because of the extra work involved with that format. Hence the pocket size and excellent zoom range of the Lumix were attractive. My daughter has a Lumix that takes great pictures, so my expectations were high.

The images I got back were just too blurry, especially at the far end of the zoom range and the purple fringing was noticeable even at normal viewing in some cases. In most cases the shutter speed was plenty fast so that was not the issue. It was either the lens was not up to the task or the auto focus was at fault. I had hoped to be able to attach some samples to this review, but apparently that is not an option.

I must admit this is my first 'point and shoot' camera and in most cases, it was 'point and hope'. I was not able to see the LCD screen in full sunlight and frankly don't see how anyone can use these things outdoors. I looked for a way to increase the LCD brightness, but I don't think there is one. My first digital camera had a simple optical viewfinder. Why has this feature been left off almost all new cameras?

One tip for users of this camera, I found that the camera tends to overexpose outdoor shots and I liked the results better when setting the exposure to -1 or -1.5. Anyway I am still looking for a small format camera I can use.
