Not Mac Compatible
Nowhere on the product page does it say that for this size HD mac users will have to buy and install a controller card. I was backing up a work computer so didn't have the option of installing the controller card, nor would I want to spend the extra time and money doing so. I ended up having to go to Best Buy the next morning to purchase a smaller and more expensive HD since I needed to back up files before the end of the week.

Do not waste your time if you are a mac user!

Excellent Storage for the Price!
I bought this drive to replace my old 500GB drive, which died. I was surprised to see a 1TB drive go for only $69.99. Great! I've only had it for a few hours, so I can't comment on reliability (I hear WD has the best reliability of all drive makers), but it's very easy to use - Plug 'n' Play. Reformatted it for Mac. Couldn't be happier. Now I got TONS of room for my music, movies, TV, and Time Machine backups. Have it connected to my AirPort Extreme so I can use it wirelessly.

Sleek & Simple External Drive
I primarily use this as a backup drive, but also have a partition for photo storage. Moving everything over from my old, smaller drive wasn't too painful, and the drive has been fast & reliable since. Style-wise, it's a vast improvement over my last drive. It's shockingly light compared to the old one too! I also like that it plugs straight into the wall, no extra ac/dc converter box. Good buy, no problems so far.

Use different backup software
The price is right for the size of storage (500 gb) but the software included called "EZ backup" is awful. The interface is sluggish and not easily customizable. I tried it for a week and then deleted it. I use Microsoft backup, an old reliable version that I found to be easier, quicker and less obtrusive.

Pretty Good
A pretty good product on first try. Will see how well it functions down the line.

Dead in 6 months
Less than 6 months of light use and never transporting it, and it's dead. The drive clicks and shuts down. I forgot about the last Toshiba drive I owned that died just before one year. I guess there are just no good manufacturers of consumer hard drives left.

A quick tip I find helpful:
If you have the misfortune of already owning this drive, you'll know when it's about to go because it clicks very loudly and sometimes Windows will either tell you the drive is not recognized or that it needs to be formatted. Do NOT take any of the suggested actions of formatting the drive, and DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER YET. If the drive comes back after it does this, IMMEDIATELY follow the steps below to track the data on the drive and either give yourself a better chance with data recovery companies, or just to keep track of what you're about to lose. If the drive doesn't come back after you recieve a message from Windows, try unplugging it for a few seconds (you won't be able to safely eject at this point), turn it upside down gently, and plug it back in. If the head is stuck, this can OCCASIONALLY bring the drive back for long enough to get a list of the files.

If you're using Windows:
1. Figure the drive letter of your dying drive (I'll leave this to you, but if you only have one internal hard drive and one CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive, and nothing else plugged in, try drive E below)
2. Press the Windows Key + R at the same time (or go to Start and click on Run, or go to Start and type cmd.exe if you're using Windows 7 and skip step 3)
3. In the box that comes up, type the word "CMD" without the "s and press ENTER
4. In the black box that comes up, type "cd C:" and press enter, then type "cd \" and press enter
5. Remember the drive letter I told you to find? You'll need it now: In the same black box, type "dir /a /s E:\ >> drive_filelist.txt" but substitute your drive letter for E and press enter.
6. This will leave you a file on your main drive "Drive C:" called 'drive_filelist.txt' listing every file you had saved on the drive (if it stayed on long enough to finish).

With a list of the contents of the drive, you increase the chance of recovering your data if you can afford to send it off for data recovery services. If not, at least you have a list of what you've lost in case you're wondering what you had on the drive to begin with.

Toshiba External Hard Drive
I purchased this item, as I was having serious problems with my desktop computer,
and needed to save information. This was easy to use, and I have since hooked it up to another computer,and all data seems complete. The only problem I encountered is that I was not able to utilize the preloaded software. Instead I did a copy and paste. I do not know if this was a problem with the Toshiba, or with my own computer. I would purchase this again if the need arises.

Unhappy with Hard Drive and Toshiba
I bought this for my mother in January 2010 and now, 7 months later it has died-twice. The second time (about 10 days ago) she hasn't been able to resurrect it. She has called, submitted a service request online twice (24-hour turnaround time-HA!) and she hasn't heard anything from Toshiba at all.

Very easy to use
While not as small as some 500GB external hard drives I've seen, it's easy to use and easy to store when not in use.

Failed within 2 years
When I purchased this item in December 2008, it apparently only came with a 1 year warranty instead of the 3 years now offered. In August 2010 (less than 2 years old), it crashed and is now a worthless paperweight. Set up was easy, and it worked fine - for a while. Buyer beware.

Good back-up device
Bought this for my wife's Toshiba laptop as a back-up device. The unit is quiet and its' silver color in the
vertical stand allows it to take up less space as well as look nice. The unit comes with two EMC(Dantz) Retrospect software
back-up programs plus one from Iomega. You have to go to the website and register to get them. The online site
allows you to download them but fails to differentiate between them(i.e.-strengths and weaknesses of each).
This makes it confusing not knowing if you have to do a recovery if all your data, OS and apps will be there.
Otherwise a nice unit at a affordable price.

Excellent product!
I already own a 1TB Iomega external hard drive. NO issues to install in my PC and backing up info is as easy as drag and drop. The most difficult issue I've faced has been PC-related (a USB port). It's reliable, relatively portable, 1TB it's enough for those of us just backing up the whole music and documents we consider important. Just duplicate the good experience for 2 TB!

Decent product for a reasonable price
We've had no problems - it looks decent and it is easy to use. Just plug it in and basically drag files over.

Pure Garbage
I bought my WD 1TB my passport SE and was very excited until i transfered about 300 GB of data onto it and the next day it said my password was wrong and my password hint did not exsist and i had to format my drive. then everything was great after i had loaded about 700 GB onto it and randomly i turned on my computer and my drive told me that there was no data on it any more and that i would have to format it in order to use it. So long story short in the span of owning this thing for one week i have lost over a TB of data because of this defective piece of junk. DO NOT BUY IT!!!!

Worst connection I've ever seen.
The device uses a wobbly micro USB connection that disconnects on the slightest movement. That means, in order to move this drive, you need to absolutely not touch the drive, cable, or your computer in any way shape or form while you use it. In addition, even if you're absolutely steady, if the micro USB is wobbled to the wrong side when it's connected, the device might not be recognized or not even power on if connected.

Seriously, who tested this drive before they shipped it? I love western digital drives, but huge fail on this one. I used this drive to back up my data, but it gets spontaneously disconnected so often from vibrations on a table that after backing up my data on it, I feel it's more unstable than my failing drive and more unusable than a standard external that you need to haul around a power brick for.

Don't get this drive.

Excellent product--but...
I love my WD Passport external hard drive that I bought a few years ago, and when that one filled up, I knew I wanted another of the same brand. The problem is (as many, many people have already mentioned) is that WD gummed up the works with an unnecessary feature that constantly backs up your computer, which is fine, if you want that sort of thing, but I assuredly did not. I knew what I was getting into, and I knew that I was buying a Windows drive for a Mac, but I could not plug it in and use it immediately after purchase. With a little help from Mac's disc utility I was able to reformat the drive so I can use it in the same way that I use my first one--easily transferring it from my Mac to other Windows based computers. So, it is a great product, from a reliable company, it is small and sleek and quiet, but just expect to have to do a little bit of finagling to make it work the way that its earlier version did right out of the box.

Do NOT buy this!
I did not buy this via Amazon, but at a local store.
I typically love the ease of WD passports, but this is unusable unless you:
1. never move while working
2. never bump the cord
3. stay in one working position
4. never have to get up and use the bathroom

This portable HD CONSTANTLY becomes disconnected! I cannot express how incredibly disappointed I am with it.
I wish they would go back to their old connectors.

Buy an older one or get a LACIE.....

Doesn't Work
I read the excellent review of this hard drive in PC Magazine and was excited to receive it in the mail.

I'm sure it would be great if it would actually work. I plugged the cords into my Mac and nothing. I checked that I'm using a compatible Mac (yes) and can't get this thing to work. It powers up and then stops and then nothing.

I hope Amazon will take this back.

Small and Easy to Use
My old hard drive with less memory was twice the size of this. I was impressed by its small size and simple matte finish. I use it with time machine on an iMac 20". It works great. Easy set-up. My only complaint is the short length of the included mini-usb cable. Why is it so small? It's 12 inches long which is much shorter than the cable on my old drive. Aside from that i'm very happy with it.

Backup is fundamental!
Got on a smokin' deal on this, the primary purpose for me was to format it FAT32 and use it with my PS3. Since it's very roomy, I can transfer files between work and home, Mac to PC, PVR to PS3 and beyond. Self powered USB bus means no more separate power "brick" to hoist around too, which is huge to me. I have Western Digital hard drives in just about anything that'll take a 2.5" drive, so I do like the brand, value, and reliability. i order this on 20 th. now is 29th, still haven't shipped yet. what is going on with amazon? i had few experiences before. especially the today's deal. wonder what happened if i ordered it for regular price .

Simplicity is king
There is more than what meets the eyes with this drive. One word: Simple.

The cardboard packaging uses a minimal amount of materials and therefore reduces waste.
The injection-molded plastic allows the users to open and reassemble the internal components easily.
There is not a single screw involved in this unit.

Inside of this drive is a WDC Scorpio Blue drive with the standard SATA connector. This is not to be confused with the WDC Passport Essential. The Essential aims for smaller footprint, so instead of a standard SATA, the printed-circuit board on the hard drive only provides a direct USB 2.0 socket plus a few leads for SATA connection. However, if components on that PC board malfunction, then you'd have to find an identical drive and 'borrow' or 'harvest' the working PC board just to get your data off.

The Elements, if the USB 2.0 bridge is bad, the drive doesn't go down entirely. You can easily pop the drive out and put it into a USB 2.0 enclosure and read your data. This is a good side effect of having a slightly bulkier footprint.

Voiding the warranty or not, no one in the right mind would use a brick (refurbished) provided by the manufacturer as a warranty swap, so I highly recommend those who are still using 320GB or smaller to pull this drive and install it internally, and take the 320GB or smaller out of the notebook and put it into this case and use it as a backup drive.

Excellent Product
I was debating between this Western Digital portable and the Toshiba Canvio, but I end up buying this one because it was on sale. It's compact, easy to use, and it is cheaper than the Toshiba Canvio. The speed is moderate, works wonderfully, very happy with purchase.

This Drive Failed on me Two Different Times!
I bought the Iomega Prestige 1.5 TB in June 2009. Worked great, until in January 2010 I started getting a "USB Device Not Recognized" on my Windows XP computer. No matter what I tried, it would not read the device. I called Iomega Support and after a remote diagnosis, they agreed to send me a new drive. I received the second drive in Febuary 2010. It's August 2010 now, and the second brand new drive has started doing the exact same thing again!

In both cases, the data was unrecoverable!

I strongly recommend: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Small, compact, and wonderful to use
I got this when my 640 GB hard drive was full. It is a great addition and easy to use. Quick Start Guide is very simple and easy to understand. It didn't take any time at all to get it set up and connected to the computer. It is also compatible with both mac and windows.

Not durable enough
I got this external hard drive because it was supposed to be fast. It is in fact fast enough to run music and any files out of it, and without lag. For that it gets the bump up to two stars. My major problem with it is that the only time I moved it from my desk in the six months I've owned it, it broke. I was transferring files to my laptop in the other room, it fell off my nightstand that is about 2.5 feet tall, and it hasn't worked since. I lost all of my information. The most important thing about an external hard drive is to have peace of mind knowing your data is safe. This product failed for me.

An Obsolete Product Sold As New
I recently purchased this external hard drive from Amazon to use with my Windows 7 system. A major consideration was the fact that well-regarded backup software (Retrospect) was included.

Now that I have installed and used the HW/SW, I find that this version of Retrospect (version 7.6) does not work with Windows 7.

Roxio (which provides support for EMC Retrospect) informs me that a Windows 7 version of Retrospect exists, but I will need to pay $29 for an "upgrade" to Retrospect 7.7.

After contacting Iomega directly, I received the same response.

It is inexcusable for a product to be sold as new when it does not support current operating environments and when there is no disclaimer to this effect.

Several communications with Roxio and Iomega have verified the company policy and have been completely fruitless. I plan to avoid Iomega and Retrospect products in the future.

Nice drive...
I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality of the drive. Its constructed out of aluminum and has a nice sturdy feel to it. It installed no problem and within minutes I was backing up my desktop PC. I burned about 200G to it without issue. I also like the fact the there is no preinstalled software on the drive. I prefer to choose my own backup programs (Goodsync). However if you want the IoMega SW you can download it. I plan to keep it powered on and spinning for a few days to flesh out any mechanical problems. Take note that this drive neeeds external power and has some "heft" to it. So if your looking for a truly lightweight portable drive you should move on. If I encounter any problems I'll update my review. At this point it seems like an excellent buy...

Beware of this product
Did not work when I received it. No information in manual about installation. I am assuming this is plug and play, as I said no information was provided in the manual or on the Toshiba website. Be careful when ordering this, as this was a waste of my time. Feel very frustrated because of the lack of information anywhere on the Toshiba website. Also, they make it very difficult just to find an email address to contact somebody on their site.

Didn't work out of the box.
Plug-no-play. I pulled it out of the box, tried for an hour to get my laptop to see it, failed; tried my 2 desktop machines, no; tried my friend's 2 laptops, still nothing. Return.

Fine as a disc drive
I've Had it a few days and it works fine as a disc drive. The install was flawless and the short USB cord no problem for me. My complaint is the backup software included with the drive. Under Windows XP, signed on as a non-administraror userid the backup software cannot see the drive. If you do a "Run AS" and run the backup software under an administrator userid it sees the drive but defaults to backung up the files and folders of that userid, not the userid which is signed on to the system. Also you cannot change which files and folders get backed up. The only way I was able to get the software to work was to sign on as the computer administrator. Then It would see the drive. It still wanterd to backup the files and folders of that userid so I had to manually select the files and folders for the userid I really wanted to backup.

I'll most likley wind up using the Windows XP backup program.

Excellent small size but high capicity external storage divice
This is the second Toshiba external storage HDD I have purchased. They both are light and very easy to use. I liked the backup software that came with the older lower capicity HDD it was an older version of NTI Shadow but the new backup software by NTI is useable. It is just great that they have been able to put 1TB of storage in such a small package and power it with only the USB connect cable.

JUNk!!
I bought this and received it 2 weeks later on sale.

Out of the box it had issues form the first time i plugged it in.

Tried to format and would fail.
Copy data went fine. Move to another PC and it would not recognize and need to reformat.
I even tried a low level 8 hr format to NTFS.. still had issues..

junk ..wont buy a Toshiba HD again.
